In episode 127, we talked about an emerging partnership between Martin University and Ivy Tech. That partnership has developed in many ways. In 2019 Ivy Tech partnered with Packback. Packback is an A.I. supported online discussion platform that uses inquiry and artificial intelligence to monitor and moderate student discussions while helping instructors scale impact and feedback. Ivy Tech chose to partner with Packback to achieve the following goals: innovating with new technologies, improving student success with an emphasis on closing equity gaps, and improving instructor and student engagement.
Today we will hear from early adopters of Packback at Ivy Tech as well as co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Packback.

Research tells us that up to 20% of students in higher education report having a disability. At Ivy Tech, while only about 3% of our students report a disability to the office of Disability Support Services, our recent climate survey revealed that more than 30% of students report having a disability.
Ivy Tech has a dedicated office and staff to ensure that these students receive the resources and assistance they need to help them be successful in their educational journey. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ensure equal access for students with disabilities in our educational setting. Today we will be talking beyond basic compliance, and focusing on how we can all better support students with disabilities at the College.

Over the last couple of years, the strategy and process improvement team has expanded to include operations, data analytics, and event planning. With the recent addition of Talent Development and a new focus on change management, the team took a step back to take a holistic view of their strengths and services they provide to the College.
The team found that the term Organizational Development more appropriately defined the new structure and purpose. With this new structure, the team decided to create a mission statement that reads, “Organizational Development serves campuses and the college with a creative and collaborative spirit. We leverage data and a willingness to adapt in areas of planning, talent development, facilitation, and coaching to produce analytical and effective outcomes with meaning.”

Today I am coming to you live from the First-Generation Celebration at our Indianapolis Campus.
National First-Generation College Celebration is recognized at colleges across the country during the week of November 8. Join Ivy Tech on many campuses in recognizing the achievements of our First-Generation College students and increase your awareness of how we can best support their needs.
We will be hearing from students, staff, and faculty who are celebrating First-Generation students on the Indianapolis campus - for the third annual week of celebrations. It is our hope that through increased awareness and a greater focus on the resiliency and value First-Generation students bring to the college, we can continue to advocate for change that helps not only support the needs of First-Generation students but for all students at Ivy Tech.

Today we’ll be talking about Goal 2 updates to our Strategic Plan. This goal centers on recruitment and enrollment.
Last Fall, we began the process of refreshing Goal 2 strategies and metrics. Statewide listening sessions were conducted and a cross-functional team of campus and systems employees worked together to create an updated plan.
In July, campuses were given their new Goal 2 metrics. These new goals were based on the recruitable population of each campus’ service area and have been broken down to the county level. Recruitable population is defined as high school students in grades 10-12 and population ages 18-64 with a high school diploma or some college, but no degree.
A primary intention of the Goal 2 refresh was to allow more campus autonomy, rather than Systems Office enrollment requirements by student category. This has allowed campuses to create the most impactful strategy for your service area.

We are pleased to announce our new Lafayette Chancellor, Dr. Aaron Baute. He was born and raised in Lafayette and began his career at Ivy Tech in 2004 as an adjunct instructor. Over the years he served in various roles at the Lafayette campus including faculty, program chair for Business Administration, department chair for the School of Business, and division dean of Technology.
Most recently Dr. Baute was the Vice President of Business, Logistics, and Supply Chain. Dr. Scott Hanback, chair of the Lafayette campus board said it best, “Dr. Baute has extensive knowledge of the area’s business and industry, K-12 institutions, and Purdue University. I know that he will hit the ground running on the first day and build on Dr. Bathe’s legacy.”

As many of you may recall, episode 120 last fall was with Systems Office Finance. ASAP is Ivy Tech’s accelerated associate degree program where students graduate with their associate degree in just 11 months. In the summer of 2020, ASAP applied for and received a grant from Circle of Ivy to provide stress management curriculum and materials to students.
During the most recent academic year, the Stress management kits were provided to all ASAP students statewide and mental health programming was incorporated into Flexible Friday curriculum delivered by trained mental health professionals.
The statewide mental health programming was delivered via synchronous Zoom meetings which continued to strengthen students' sense of belonging within the statewide learning community. Students were equipped with stress management strategies and tools necessary to successfully persist in their accelerated curriculum and complete their first college degree in 11-months.

Goal 5 of Ivy Tech’s Strategic Plan is all about continuing to grow as a great place to work. This week’s podcast is all about a new way to recognize employees - specifically academic advisors - for their service to the College.
The Vice President for Student Success and Assistant Vice President of Academic Advising formed a team consisting of Chancellors, Directors, Advisors, Vice Chancellors of Student Success, and Human Resources in Fall 2019. The goal of the team was to develop Advising levels similar to Faculty levels.
The team reviewed advising turnover rates and compared other institutional structures for advising promotions. They developed, as an outcome, advising levels. The Advising levels create a pathway for advisors to advance in their position by providing evidence of continued professional development, outstanding performance, and service to the College and community. The goal of this project is to be both a retention and professional development tool.

In the spring semester of 2021 from April 7-16, the Strategy 5.2 Committee invited all employees throughout the state to participate in Ivy Tech's first statewide Idea Dash. The HMW question was “How might we improve brand advocacy for Ivy Tech among faculty and staff?”.
The virtual sessions were scheduled over a two-week period for a duration of 2-3 hours and accommodated 20 participants per session. Findings from the extensive Ivy Tech branding study were shared with the participants through a video to offer insights into how the public perceives the value of an Ivy Tech education and where Ivy Tech can improve its efforts in recruiting and retaining students.

Ivy Tech is partnering with DigArc to improve the quality of our curriculum and catalog management system. The improvements should result in better integration between these two tools (e.g. you’ll be able to click on class numbers/names in the curriculum to link directly to the course outline of record), better integration with existing tools like Banner and our Degree Audit tool, and more transparency for faculty and staff into the curriculum approval processes at the College.
The new tool, which is scheduled to launch in Feb 2022, will replace the Google Docs/Drive tools used today as well as the internal approval process used following curriculum committee meetings. This week’s panel will share how this tool implementation is going and what changes you can expect.

On July 1, 2021, Ivy Tech Hamilton County will become Ivy Tech’s 19th campus. This C3 (Ivy Tech’s classification for small campuses) will serve about 1200 students in the 4th largest and fastest growing county in the state. New programs will align to top industries including IT, STEM, Agriculture, Manufacturing, as well as specific programs designed for transfer. The campus team is small but mighty and they talked in the episode about how they are building a culture of family and caring from the ground up.

Ivy Tech is focused on developing the workforce to ensure the success of Indiana employers and our students. New technology, particularly in the manufacturing sector has prompted the development of a new degree to address the growing technical needs of advanced manufacturing companies in Indiana.
The Smart Manufacturing and Digital Integration degree will be available on select campuses beginning fall of 2021. The subject matter experts who are also faculty and chairs in the school of Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering, and Applied Science developed the degree and are here along with the vice president of the school to provide more information.

Today is our fourth episode of transfer-focused podcasts. We have been looking at various aspects of transfer at Ivy Tech including the role of our transfer advocates on each campus to a look at recent changes and opportunities with dual credit transfer and how students can complete high school with one year already earned toward their college degree.
In our most recent podcast, we discussed what is happening on a statewide level to expand transfer opportunities for students. Today, we are going to change our focus to highlight what we believe the be one of our oldest and strongest partnerships with a four-year university.
Long before Ivy Tech was named as the community college for Indiana with transfer as a specific part of our mission, IUPUI and Ivy Tech forged a partnership called Passport to specifically identify transfer opportunities and provide a bridge for transferring from Ivy Tech to IUPUI. This partnership has now been in existence for more than 22 years and has successfully assisted literally thousands of students over that time.

Through partnership with two state agencies, the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Ivy Tech Community College is embarking upon, not one, but two initiatives this summer that will help high school students and recent graduates achieve post-secondary success.
The first initiative is “Crossing the Finish Line” which focuses on assisting high school students and recent graduates complete remaining coursework needed to secure a short-term certificate or degree this summer.
The second initiative is “Bridging the Gap” which focuses on assisting high school students, identified as not meeting certain college readiness benchmarks, to “bridge” from high school to college.

In this episode, Chris Lowery, Senior Vice President of Workforce Alignment, Systems OfficeAnd Stacy Townsley, Vice President of Adult Strategy and Statewide Partnerships, Systems Office share the vision and strategy around Bridges of Hope.
Imagine a bridge spanning a river, with all of the structural elements—including the cables, deck, and piers—working in concert to provide sturdy support. Metaphorically speaking, at one end of the bridge you can find relief—food, shelter, safety, daycare, healthcare and other needs; crossing the bridge you find opportunity through training and education that provide pathways from jobs to better jobs and careers; and on the other side of the bridge is transformation, with meaningful employment supporting social and economic mobility.
The bridge can only stand and be truly sturdy for people in their journey if all three elements are working in concert – relief, opportunity, and transformation…or, community- and faith-based organizations, Ivy Tech, and employers. This sturdy support is what the Bridges of Hope strategic partnership initiative aims to achieve.

This episode features The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) which is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges. The AACC has nine commissions that were established to provide advice to the AACC Board and staff, encourage collaboration among community colleges across the country, provide a forum for focused conversations about important community college issues and priorities, provide for increased involvement in the Association, and provide leadership opportunities for members of the AACC Board of Directors, who serve as the chairs of the commissions.
Last year, Ivy Tech put forward 10 individuals to serve on these commissions and all 10 were selected. Today, Ivy Tech leaders who served on AACC Commissions will discuss their experience in their roles in hopes of encouraging more Ivy Tech representatives to apply and participate.

Lesley Bradley and Dr. Cory Clasemann join the podcast to discuss IvyAchieves. Ivy Achieves, a new program rolling out for Fall 2021, is the college’s promise to students.
We are promising that when students commit to their goals here at Ivy Tech, we will support them throughout their journey. It consists of two elements. First, an incentive program that will reward students when they engage with their campus, instructors, and other staff through activities that lead to student success. Second, we’re promising students that if they embody the five Student Success Commitments, and ultimately aren’t successful in a class, they will be able to retake the course for free.

Dr. Mia Johnson joins us this week to talk about Ivy Parents Achieve Success with Support, also known as I.PASS. It is a free Ivy Tech 8-week virtual course being offered to single parents, predominately single moms. This course is designed to help students gain tools such as note-taking techniques, how to get aligned with the workforce, recognizing their strengths and career options, financial literacy, and networking. IN 2-1-1 is a state telephone line that serves all Hoosiers. In today’s episode, we’ll hear from Tara Morse and Jaimie Ferren – Executive Director and Deputy Director of IN 2-1-1 about the comprehensive resources provided by IN 2-1-1.
For our Ivy Tech family, 211 is another resource we can connect to as employees or direct our students to in times of crisis or for questions about various supports needed. As I shared in the episode, 77% of our students per our last Hope Center REAL College survey believed they did not qualify for resources. 211 provides a confidential no-cost mechanism for students to determine if they qualify for services.
2-1-1 is a free service available to anyone in Indiana; it is confidential. It’s as easy as calling 2-1-1 or for our bordering counties you may need to dial 1-866-211-9966 to make sure you connect with Indiana 2-1-1. We serve every Hoosier. If you are not sure if we can meet your need or not, call us anyway, it’s as easy as calling 2-1-1.

Career Champions is a campaign launched in November 2020 by Strategy Team 4.4, to fulfill the tactic “build a culture of career coaching statewide.” On this week’s episode, we’ll hear from six of our Team Ivy family who serve as Career Champions across the College.

In this week’s episode, College Vice President for Government Relations, Mary Jane Michalak, will be talking about the College’s government relations efforts, both at the federal level as well as the state level. We will hear about what our college does in terms of government relations, how it works, and what issues we are following. We will also hear about the differences in advocating for the College at the federal level and the state level. Finally, we will hear why it is important that the College have individuals specifically dedicated to government relations.

Today we are joined by Marwin Strong, an Ivy Tech alumni who was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana. He has recently expanded his career into motivational speaking and is the owner of Marwin Strong Motivation, LLC.
In June 2020, Marwin published “Back from the Shadow of Death.” After a near-fatal attack by an unknown assailant, he made a dramatic comeback from his former life by starting his own in-the-trenches war against drugs and violence. Through adversity, his message is achieving dreams is possible for everyone.
He will be sharing with us a little about his past, his book, and what he believes is needed for students to overcome adversity and challenges in the classroom.

Ivy Tech and Martin University have embarked upon a new partnership drawing upon the strengths of each to better serve students in Indianapolis and beyond.
The partnership includes the development of a new highly marketable cyber entrepreneurship credential, developing guaranteed admission agreements, collaborating through the new Center for Racial Equity and Inclusion to build capacities in our institutions and community, and addressing Ivy Tech’s challenge in credentialing dual credit faculty.
We are discussing the development of the partnership and where it may be headed in the future.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Thanks to my guests Tom Taylor and Thomas Riebe for going over a fantastic list of items you can do to secure your digital life.
While not a perfect transcript of our episode, here is an overview of all the items that we spoke from in the episode. Use this as a checklist to do your own cybersecurity month health checkup.

Make a list of all the online services you use and endeavor to change the password on all of them at least once per year.

Consider getting a password manager to help secure and manage your online accounts and passwords to make life easier. BitWarden, Dashlane, and LastPass are all good options that have free versions. Utilize the password manager to ensure that no two passwords are the same. If used properly, you will only need to remember one password and you won't even know the password for your bank account. It takes time to set up a password manager and get used to it, but you will be more secure and it will make life easier.

Enable multi-factor authentication on as many accounts as you can. Link your cell phone number, alternate email address, or get a hardware token to secure your online accounts wherever you can.

Hardware tokens are easy to use and are a great way to secure your accounts. Hardware tokens are little devices that act as a digital fingerprint. No two are alike, and they allow you to uniquely identify yourself to places like your Bank or Facebook. As long as you have it, and no one else does, no one can get into your accounts.

If you are in the market for a hardware token, I recommend starting out with a FIDO2 compatible token. They are inexpensive, offer great security, and are easy to use. FIDO stands for “Fast Identity Online”. At its heart, FIDO is an open security standard, created by companies like Google, RSA, Microsoft, and PayPal in an effort to combat online account theft. FIDO2 is merely the second generation of the technology.

FIDO2 tokens are supported by most modern web browsers, and many online services such as Amazon, Facebook, Google, Twitter, and over a hundred other websites. I personally like the Yubico Blue FIDO2 Security tokens. They are very durable and will fit on your keychain. They can be used to protect any number of your online accounts. https://www.yubico.com/products/

We generally don’t give house keys to everyone who visits our homes, but we seem to allow everyone to use our WiFi when they visit. Be sure to utilize the guest network feature of your home router to grant guests access, or change the WiFi password on your home router at least once / year if guest network functionality is not available on your router.
- Keep your antivirus updated on your computers and install all recommended security updates when they are available. There are many choices for home Anti-Virus. Immunet and Sophos are two good free home AV choices.

Consider getting a new smartphone if yours is over 5 years old. Smartphones don't last forever. Just because your old phone may still charge and make calls, does not mean it's still good to use. Smartphones need updates just like computers, and eventually, they won't get updates because the manufacturer will stop supporting them.

Simplify your digital life. Go back to online services you don't use anymore and close your accounts. This is the same concept as closing out old unused lines of credit or bank accounts at banks you no longer do business with anymore. Unused accounts are a liability that you can easily avoid.

Keep tabs on your IoT items such as cameras, virtual assistants, thermostats, and other smart devices. Know what all you have in your home so that you can keep an eye on their vulnerabilities and address them as you become aware. If your home router supports isolating these devices onto their own network, take advantage of those options.

Social media has given us all a platform to share our voices, but it’s our choice how we use these platforms. Be careful what you share, and with whom you share. Bad actors can utilize the information you share online against you. What you post and what bad actors see are two very different things.
Take time to read your student or employee handbook policies on social media policies and understand where the line between personal protected speech begins and ends.
To quote the Ivy Tech handbook, "You have rights afforded by state and federal law, but be aware that not everything you say or post online is protected. False, defamatory, harassing, or intimidating postings are not protected free speech. Inappropriate postings about co-workers, students, supervisors, College policies, actions, or decisions could be the basis for disciplinary action."
Be aware of what you have on the internet and consider evaluating your online content from time-to-time.
Lastly, I'd like to remind folks that Fall isn't only about national Cybersecurity awareness month. There’s been a lot going on this year. COVID-19 has affected our communities in many different ways. Technology played a major role in keeping us connected. It allowed us to stay in touch with friends and loved ones, and enabled us to continue our educational goals. In spite of everything that has happened, and all of the amazing things that technology has allowed us to do, it wasn’t technology that got us through this year; it was the people around us. Not only were we #InThisTogether, but we also found out we were stronger together. Be sure to take some time this season and unplug and let the people around you know you’re thankful for them.

Kokomo and Indy campus Libraries were awarded an Advancing Racial Equity Collection Development Grant from the Indiana Humanities Council with funding made possible by the Lilly Endowment.
With this grant, the libraries purchased books and DVDs that promote a greater understanding of social and racial injustices and help promote a greater understanding of cultural diversity and racial equity.
These resources are available to the whole Ivy Tech community through Interlibrary Loan (just check with your local librarian). If you’d like to learn more about the books & resources that libraries could choose from, visit https://indianahumanities.org/racialequity and find the Racial Equity Materials/Book List link on the right-hand side of the screen.
In addition, the Ivy Tech Library Directors, which is a statewide committee of library directors, have met in a “Meeting of the Minds” with campus Diversity Leads to collaborate on ideas of how to team up and support each other with Strategic Goal #8: To establish a sustainable culture of diversity, equity, and belonging.
One specific action that has already grown out of this collaboration is a meeting in July with author Marwin Strong, an Ivy Tech alum, who shared his experiences growing up in Muncie. Marwin’s life experiences led to his first book, Back From the Shadow of Death.
Katrina Hudson, ASAP Director and Diversity Lead for Lake County campus, will be hosting a book club using Marwin Strong’s book. Katrina was not able to join us today but we recognize and appreciate her work and want you to have that context as we will likely discuss Marwin’s book today. RaiseMe is a free platform that allows students to earn micro-scholarships towards colleges they might want to transfer to in the future. As a student progresses through community college coursework, they receive incremental “micro-scholarships” from colleges for those achievements as the student logs those achievements in a free online portfolio.

This week we're going to dig into the new delivery method we're introducing at Ivy Tech this fall called Learn Anywhere.
Learn Anywhere didn't actually come about because of Covid19. We began discussing Learn Anywhere as a part of our work to help support Single Moms. Covid19 provided a reason to accelerate the launch of this new learning method. In today's episode, we want to talk with three folks from campuses that are offering a higher percentage of Learn Anywhere courses for the fall semester.

The College's official definition of LearnAnywhere is in ASOM 6.10 which is available at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fO3246g923XGR4dO-yKkLTGHZKotttRykM8qhCiAdFk/preview.
The current definition of this learning method (as of the date we publish this episode is:
"Courses will be taught from an on-site instructional location following the course schedule and students can attend in-person, via live webcast technology, or view a recording of the live session. If scheduled at multiple on-site instructional locations, the instructor will be in a classroom with students at one on-site instructional location while other students attend at a separate on-site instructional location(s) or virtually.
The course may be supplemented with other asynchronous activities via IvyLearn, but no less than 1/2 of the contact hours will be assigned to live activities. Students choosing to attend live via webcast technology from an off-campus location will need sufficient broadband access and a microphone or headset.
A webcam may be required. Students may be required to attend campus to visit the testing center to take proctored exams or to complete skills demonstrations."

Ivy Tech partnered with LinkedIn Learning in April of 2020 to offer students, faculty, and staff access to the entire LinkedIn Learning library of courses. On July 1, 2020, Ivy Tech launched a statewide partnership with Humana to provide Employee Assistance Program benefits to all full-time employees of the college. This benefit also extends to cover anyone living in the employee’s home and dependent’s living elsewhere.
In today’s episode, you’ll hear from Ivy Tech Be Lively team members Heather Hart (Lafayette), Amber Young (Muncie), and Christine Butler (Systems Office) as well as Humana team members Shelly Gilmore and Dr. Randy Martin about this new benefit.

IvyConnect, our new college-wide Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) tool, continues to successfully make progress toward implementation. The vision statement for IvyConnect is: “Transform the student journey by creating a platform to enable informed decision-making and align business processes to improve student success, lifetime constituent engagement, and facilitate Ivy Tech’s strategic mission and vision.” The guiding principles for IvyConnect are: innovative, intuitive, efficient, collaborative, trusted.
Release 0 commenced in February and completed in mid-April. Release 1 will be released in September and we've got two experts on IvyConnect here to talk about how things are going with Release 0, what's coming Release 1 and to look ahead beyond Release 1.

Over the last several weeks in the United States and around the world, we have seen protests, marches, and rallies related to the deaths of people like George Floyd, Ahmaud Arberry, Breonna Taylor, and Dreajson Reed. Race and racism are challenging topics to talk about but we must talk about them - particularly in the context of how we collectively function as a college community. I'm joined today by three other members of the College community to have a dialog about race and racism. It is a conversation that may not be comfortable at times - perhaps for us as we have the conversation and perhaps for you as you listen. I ask only that we all sit in the discomfort and examine why it is uncomfortable for us and consider how we can use that discomfort to grow and move forward.

Indy Achieves is Mayor Joe Hogsett’s response to Indianapolis’ rapidly changing labor market by ensuring that every Indianapolis resident has the ability to pursue and complete a postsecondary credential or degree program, and empowering residents to pursue careers that put them on a pathway to the middle class.
Indy Achieves will focus on two key ways to increase the proportion of adults with the appropriate credentials:
- Increasing the number of K-12 students who pursue and complete postsecondary credentials
- Increasing the educational attainment level of the existing adult population, all the while ensuring more intentional pathways into high-demand careers.
