A group of high school students are spreading awareness about Parkinson's Disease for their HOSA project, which is a worldwide club for future health professionals. Their idea came from one of the group member's uncle who has suffered from the disease for the last 16 years. The students have been working on various activities to raise awareness, such as selling donuts and making bracelets, and will be presenting their project at the spring leadership conference on March 10th. The students have also created a website to further spread awareness and encourage others to share their stories and suggestions.

"Call on the Fighter" began as a simple idea...create and offer original music to encourage and inspire "fighters" along their Parkinson's journey. Colleen Bridges, owner, and director of Bridges for Parkinson's found the perfect fit in one of her own fighters, Rich Gootee. Rich, an award-winning singer/songwriter, knows all too well the constant and daily struggles as he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2018. Colleen's experience, research, and regular boxing classes have helped Rich and many others discover the fight within themselves to overcome the otherwise debilitating effects of Parkinson's disease. Together, Colleen, Rich, and their team have grown the music idea into an effort to help even more fighters find restoration and hope by raising funds so that nobody will ever have to be turned away from their local program. Please check out more information about our project and consider purchasing our song at www.callonthefighter.com.

The woman who can smell Parkinson’s

Joy Milne’s husband Les was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 45. However, it had been 12 years earlier when Joy had first noticed that something was different about him.

Joy has a rare condition called hereditary hypersomnia that gives her a heightened sense of smell. When Les was 33, she noticed that he had started to develop an odor, which she described as a subtle, musky smell.

She also noticed the same distinct smell when attending meetings organised by the charity Parkinson’s UK. It was at this point that she was able to link the smell to the disease.

Joy’s ‘super smeller’ abilities would soon go on to make headlines around the world, and along with researchers, they're changing the landscape of diagnosing Parkinson's.

The Young Onset Parkinson's Network Podcast (YOPnetwork.org) is proud to present a conversation with Kevin Kwok! Kevin tells his story and discusses being an ambassador of Davis Phinney, his talks with DP and gives his insight of the pharma/biotech industry where he spent years building a great career.

About Kevin

"9 years ago, at the age of 48, I was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. After recovering from the shock of this diagnosis, I opted to embrace my disease. Having been trained as a clinician (PharmD- U of Michigan 1986) and a 30 year executive in the biopharma industry, I approach my disease with a unique involvement and curiosity at multiple levels. To quote Michael J Fox, “when you’ve seen a Parkinson’s patient, you’ve only seen one patient.” The issue is that no two PD patients are exactly alike, and this poses a dilemma in treating our tribe according to traditional clinical paradigms. This is where personalized medicine (PM) comes in. In the course of my presentation, I will share how my involvement in PM as a patient will both help me and others with this disease."

Recording from Thursday night show at 6:00 EST on radioparkies.com:

Show is in Spanish and translated to English

Introduction by Gavin Mogan

Elizabeth Penate, like me, was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s disease at 38 years old. Like me, she had two young children. That’s right about where the similarities end.

I live in the United States. I have access to the best of treatment, any and all medication, and I’ve even had deep brain simulation surgery. I have community, support, family.

Elizabeth lives in El Salvador. She has basic treatment, basic access to medication, and if she’s lucky she has basic access to a doctor.

El Salvador is a low-income country. As an example, physicians there earn about the same as minimum wage workers in the US.

Often, Parkinson’s is not even her biggest problem. So how does she get by? How does she do it so frequently with a smile and a laugh? Where does this hope come from?

Elizabeth is looking out for more then just herself. She wants to change the way Parkinson’s is viewed and managed throughout the global Spanish-speaking community.

Right now she’s working with a small group to make a big difference for countless lives now and into the future.

Yes, she’s inspirational. But she wants to be more than that. She wants to be of service, of use. She shows us that we’re all connected throughout our community.

Elizabeth is a window to a world many of us have not seen before, and many of us may not want to.

But she also shows that her world is more than just pain, suffering, and hopelessness. There’s joy, love, and hope. Elizabeth embodies these qualities. She’s also strong and determined.

If you want to get to know everyday, ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the Parkinson’s world, then tune in.

*Warning sensitive subject matter about living with Parkinson’s and the medication involved will be discussed (among other subjects)

PODCAST of LIVE show on Radioparkies.com 2/29/21 were the stories of Vicki Dillon and Gaynor Edwards

About Vicki:

Vicki was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease (YOPD) in February 2007, aged just 35.

Vicki is passionate about speaking about living with Parkinson's and has travelled the word telling her powerful, sad, funny, disturbing, medical-history-making and ultimately heart warming story in her own unique style.

Life with Parkinson's is never boring and Vicki's aim is to educate and inspire you - with some laughter, tears and brain surgery along the way.

About Gaynor:

After a few years experiencing symptoms she attributed to stress, Gaynor Edwards visited her general practitioner and learned that the symptoms instead were caused by something neurological. Nine months of various scans later, she received a diagnosis of Young Onset Parkinson’s at the age of 42. “‘You have Parkinson’s.’ Those are three words no one wants to hear,” she says.

Gaynor found support and resources in the UK’s major Parkinson’s charity, but she quickly discovered that YOPD wasn’t a focus there. “I thought, ‘Well, it’s needed. We need to start a charity dedicated to Young Onset. I guess I’ll have to do it.’ So, I did.”

Gaynor founded and continues to lead Spotlight YOPD (a registered charity in the UK)

Only 29 when diagnosed with PD, Benjamin Stecher, co-authored the book Brain Fables.

Brain Fables An estimated 80 million people live with a neurodegenerative disease, with this number expected to double by 2050. Despite decades of research and billions in funding there are no medications that can slow, much less stop, the progress of these diseases. The Time to rethink degenerative brain disorders has come. With no biological boundaries between neurodegenerative diseases, illnesses such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's result from a large spectrum of biological abnormalities, hampering effective treatment. Acclaimed neurologist Dr Alberto Espay and Parkinson's advocate Benjamin Stecher present compelling evidence that these diseases should be targeted according to genetic and molecular signatures rather than clinical diagnoses. BRAIN FABLES is a wakeup call to the scientific community, explaining why we have no effective disease-modifying treatments, and how we can get on track

Linda K Olson shares her incredible story, becoming a triple amputee at 29, how she overcame, then being diagnosed with Parkinson's at 65 and how she stays positive!

Her website https://lindakolson.com/

Book review by Affinity magazine Gone: A Memoir of Love, Body, and Taking Back My Life is a memoir by triple-amputee Linda Olson. While, admittedly, memoir isn’t my genre of choice, Olson’s story was incredible and enticing. From the first page, I was drawn into Olson’s narrative and consumed the rest of the book quickly thereafter. Olson is witty, honest, and resilient. She bars no details about her incredible recovery: every detail of Olson’s miraculous story is conveyed through Gone. She doesn’t ask for pity, in fact, she repeatedly infuses humor into her situation in an attempt to make both the reader and her family laugh! Gone was a wholly enjoyable and inspiring read for me, especially at a time when reflection and perspective are necessary.

We lead off with Fred Manning who had DBS surgery nearly 2 months ago, he talks about his experience.

After Fred we have an interview with Jonathan Braddock. Jon talks about his life before and life after his Parkinson’s diagnosis which was roughly a year ago. Additionally, Jon talks about his book called the “YOPD CLUB”. He talks about why he wrote it and the people he interviewed for the book. This is a must read if your newly diagnosed or seasoned PD’ers like me.

Remember to leave a review after you read it, check out this review.

“If ever there was a book to allay your fears and answer so many of your questions after a YOPD diagnosis, this is it. These ten inspirational people demonstrate exactly what every ‘newbie’ needs to know - that they and Parkinson’s can live a pretty normal, productive and happy life alongside each other, but also that it’s ok to have bad days and be scared about the future. Congratulations to William J. Braddock for filling so well a much needed gap in the available reading matter for young onset Parkinson’s people. His intelligence, empathy and straightforward, honest approach shine through.”
