This question was so big that we called in a sociologist.
This week your Dads dive into the second part of our two part series tackling one really big question. In this episode we’re talking to a sociologist about the social structures that enable negative behaviors.
Our guest Dad is Alison Buck, a sociologist and professor whose expertise is in the reproduction of racial and gender inequality across a variety of settings, from organizations of work to college classrooms. Alison’s dissertation focused on gender and identity in the digital games industry, for which she received her Ph.D. from NC State University.
Episode 5 of D&D Dads deals with topics related to abuse and bigotry. We don’t deal with specific incidents or people but we do discuss abuse in general and how communities can cope with the impact it might have. This is the second part of a two part series dealing with abuse and bigotry in the gaming community. More lighthearted episodes will return with episode 6.

Some of you may have noticed that one of our Dads is a woman. This raises the question: What is a Dad?
For D&D Dads, Dad is a philosophy. A Dad is a guide, a caregiver, a coach, and a teacher. A Dad is a shoulder to cry on and a source of practical solutions. We see being a Dad as a state that anyone can embody, regardless of gender or parental status.
You’re a Dad when you care for others with kindness, empathy, honesty, and humor.
When we decided to make an advice show, we didn’t want to make it from the point of view of experts who thought they knew better than you. We wanted to be the people you could turn to with a problem. People who looked at you and your question with compassion.
Both of us are parents, Brennan of two adult children and J.R. of a three year old. Being a parent means caring about someone, not because you think you’re better than them, but because you want them to do well, to succeed. That felt right to us. We thought about the best of what a Dad could be, a Dad ideal, and knew that this was what we wanted the show to be.
So here we are, your D&D Dads.
