In today’s Procurement in 5 minutes, I am thrilled to be joined by Robert Semethy, the CPO at Erste Group Bank.
Robert has been in procurement for over three decades and believes that training is vital to procurement’s growth. But, despite the importance of skills development in procurement, there has been a substantial and long-term decline in the volume of employers that regularly train their teams. Robert highlights this on-going problem and is the perfect person to answer the question:
Is procurement neglecting training and development?

deepest questions our profession and industry face on a day-to-day basis.
In today’s special extended edition of Procurement in 5 minutes, we have a treat for
you. Joining us is Rebecca Lonsdale, the CPO at Castrol, BP.
Rebecca has over 20 years of experience working in procurement and she believes that
procurement plays a crucial role in driving the growth of every business. She thinks that
procurement should lead the way in innovation, act as disruptors, and foster stronger
internal partnerships. According to her, the key is to do things differently rather than
becoming obstacles to innovation, making her the perfect person to answer the burning
question: Is procurement a blocker or a facilitator?

In today’s special extended procurement in 5 minutes, I’m delighted to be joined by
Fraser Hill, the General Manager of Digital & Process Transformation and Supply Chains at Shell, to answer the question.
How do we solve the change and engage the problem in digitalization?
Fraser has been working in digital initiatives for over a decade and one of the main
areas of resistance he has seen over his career is change efforts fail due to employee
resistance. When employees resist digital transformation, it's often because employees are not comfortable with new processes and technologies, fearing job insecurity or increased workload with the adoption of new digital tools. This makes him the ideal person to answer the question: How do we solve the change and engage the problem in digitalization?

Bridging the Gap: To whom should Procurement report?
Studies show that each year organisations are spending less on training even though they acknowledge that their procurement teams do not possess the necessary skill sets to deliver on their strategic objectives.By not investing in developing their existing procurement people, an organisation is investing in failure because they are sending out the wrong message to potential candidates. In this lecture Michael Cadieux provides an outline of how to develop a training program that will deliver tangible value while demonstrating to prospective candidates why your team should become their team.
Michael Cadieux is a 20 year+ seasoned Indirect Sourcing industry executive who is now focusing on improving the Sourcing industry as a whole through building collaborative communities such as Procurement Foundry where fellow practitioners can
gather, learn and grow.

With the recognition of procurement’s strategic importance to the enterprise, the role of the procurement professional has evolved from being a functional job to a strategic position. In the past, candidates did not require a 4.0-grade average from a prestigious university to become a “buyer.” Nor did they have to have experience in terms of dealing with a globalised supply base within the framework of a socially responsible mandate.
Given this seismic shift, what are the skill sets you should be looking for in your next CPO?
In this lecture, Matt Mehalick provides a detailed overview of the tangible skills and intangible qualities that your ideal candidate must possess to ensure a successful hire.
Matt has 20 plus years of progressive sourcing/ commodity management and supply chain experience leading several shared services teams throughout his career. He has a proven track record of developing and implementing sourcing strategies in the
areas of IT, R&D, Facilities, Commercial, Business Consulting and other indirect categories that have impacted the EPS of several companies. Mat is also a change agent who challenges organizational paradigms and norms in pursuit of sustainable
improvements including the implementation of Oracle I-Procurement, Ariba, and several other e-sourcing suites.
In asking procurement professionals through a series of surveys, if they had to do it all over again, would they choose procurement as a career more than 50 per cent said no. What was even more telling was the fact that a good percentage of those who responded to the surveys were in the profession for less than three years.
Organisations today must demonstrate in principle and practice how procurement is no longer an adjunct function of finance with the sole mandate of acquiring goods and services at the best cost.
In this lecture, Kelly Barner talks about the steps your organisation must take to update its internal dialogue regarding procurement’s strategic importance to the enterprise to attract the best and the brightest candidates.

In this first in a five-part series of lectures, Stephen Day provides a detailed overview of the four main reasons why we are now experiencing a talent shortage in the procurement world.
Stephen, who over a 28-year career, has held senior positions with global corporations such as Vodafone, T-Mobile, Pearson and Philips, explains why these four issues continue to impact the job market negatively. He also talks about what organisations must do to gain a competitive advantage in attracting, hiring, and retaining the best talent.
