Does your practice have a "black hole"?

This black hole can occur when front desk staff are unable to effectively manage phone calls due to other pressing duties or a lack of proper training. Consequently, potential new patients are lost, impacting the growth of the dental practice. It underscores the importance of efficient phone answering and lead conversion practices in the success of a dental office.

Answering the call:

The dental industry has an abundance of potential new patients. However, the challenge lies in effectively answering phones, converting leads, and scheduling appointments promptly. This "black hole" can hinder a dental practice's growth without the owner even realizing it. Closing that gap becomes our priority.

Dental offices can benefit from effective coaching, closing the communication gaps, and improving front desk performance. This ultimately leads to increased growth and patient satisfaction.

Dental insurance is a joke:

It's time we acknowledge that dental insurance, as it stands today, is not real insurance. It's an absolute joke. The sales process begins by asking patients about their insurance, thereby training them to think that insurance is the important factor. We make assumptions about their financial capabilities and willingness to pay out of pocket. But, let's be real, we're talking about a patient's health, not a car or a house.

We shouldn't be selling them out of dentistry. We need to have honest conversations with our patients and explain the reality of dental insurance. Dental coverage is tough on patients - but it doesn't have to be the deciding factor in their dental care.

Treatment Presentation:

One of the biggest hindrances people face in dental care revolves around treatment presentation and financing. As a result, treatments are suggested piecemeal instead of what's truly best for the patient or beneficial for the office. It's a lose-lose situation and the crux of the problem often goes unnoticed.

As dental care professionals, we need to improve our approach to treatment presentation and financing. Once we achieve this, we'll see a significant increase in revenue per patient, and more importantly, better patient health outcomes.

In this episode you’re going to learn the difference between a DSO and a DEO. You will also hear how AI could lead to potential job losses in the dental industry.

Ken Kaufman shares insights and strategies to help dental businesses run more efficiently. Ken's background includes starting mobile and brick-and-mortar clinics, and securing financing for them. He was part of the team that developed the Nomad handheld x-ray device which later was sold to the Danaher Group.

He is the CFO at Nuvia Dental Implant Centers and previously served as the CFO of Community Dental. Ken holds an MBA in finance and entrepreneurship and authored the book DEO's Financial Secrets To Grow Dental Organizations, which offers advice for solo practitioners, expanding practices, and formal DSOs.

Ken discusses that he believes AI could be disruptive, leading to potential job loss for knowledge workers, but also hopes it will enable dentists to help patients in less invasive ways and in a faster manner, ultimately benefiting the industry as a whole. Additionally, AI could create more consistency throughout the industry, fostering patient confidence.

Ken advocates for the dental industry to become more financially savvy and encourages dentists to join the DEO group. Members gain access to assets, tools, mastermind groups, and other resources that help them learn to grow and succeed.

Ken acknowledges that dentists are intelligent people who have learned how to be dentists, but they may not have had the opportunity to develop business skills in all necessary areas. He aims to help bridge this gap. To connect with Ken, find him on Facebook or LinkedIn under Ken Kaufman.

Every year approximately 54,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral cancer.

Medications and procedures used to treat a variety of cancers can cause mouth problems, including open sores which can be very painful.

Avoiding brushing encourages bacterial growth and inflammation, which makes the problems worse. Which in turn can cause our patients even more pain and disease.

Do you feel confident recommending home care techniques to your patients that are both effective and pain-free?

Jill Meyer-Lippet of Side Effect Support and Frank Dreier of Emmi-dent the touchless toothbrush, share modern innovations that can help your patients reduce harmful bacteria below their gum line without causing pain.

If you are like most dental professionals, you probably have student load debt. And possibly a lot of it.

In this episode of the Dental Alements Podcast you will learn:

  • Strategies to pay off your loans quicker
  • What types of programs are best for you
  • How to work with a wealth advisor
  • Financial goals and planning
  • And much more

Mark Johnson is a thirty-year veteran of the investment and financial planning industry and a pioneer in helping emerging dental professionals with student loan repayment strategies. Since foundingStudentLoansRx in 2014, Mark has educated thousands of emerging dental professionals on smart repayment strategies and has helped hundreds create plans to tackle their student loan debt within the context of an overall financial plan. Upon realizing that there were over 7,500 dental school graduates and residents entering the workforce each year, with anywhere from $300k-$700k or more in student loan debt, Mark knew he had to do something to help them.

Mark's in-depth knowledge of the various federal and private student loan repayment programs, along with his three decades in the investment and financial planning industry, allows him to create custom plans for his dental clients based on their career path (associate, public health, practice ownership and residency) and other financial goals, including insurance and investment planning.

Are you treating your dental hygienist as a part of the team or as a necessary evil? With hygienists fleeing the dental field in record numbers, you can NOT afford to look the other way any longer.

The dental industry is experiencing a crushing pressure due to the shortage of working hygienists. Before you try to blame it on the C word, take an honest look at your office manager, your consultants, and yourself.

Cindy shares her personal story about how she, as an office manager, treated hygienists like they were an outcast of the dental team. She did not understand why they were paid more than her, or why they did not get excited when she would fill every one hour box available in their schedule.

And then...

Cindy became a hygienist herself and was shown first-hand the other side of the story.

The side of the story where:

  • Benefits are offered as part of employment- unless your a hygienist
  • Only the hygienist is expected to clock out during non-patient time
  • Any two members of the team can visit as long as one isn't a hygienist
  • CE is paid for the entire team- except for the hygienists
  • Hygienists are only allowed vacation time when the office is shut down
  • Consultants play hygienists against each other as a way to increase $$
  • A hygienist is expected to out perform two assistants and one dentist
  • Their day is ruled by a 60 minute box
  • They are expected to work through debilitating pain
  • The doctor bought coffee for everyone on the team-

EXCEPT FOR THE HYGIENISTS!

This is the story of Solomon, a sweet and inspiring child who has Epidermylosis Bullosa, a disease that causes the skin and mucous membranes to be as fragile as butterfly wings; any mild trauma or friction results in their skin blistering. This also affects their oral health, and we as dental professionals aren't well-informed on how to provide the care they need, and in a safe environment.

Dori shares her story not only through her eyes as a mother, but also through the eyes of her son Solomon, and her journey to find a dentist to treat her son safely. As a collective, we can start bringing awareness to this disease and how we, as health care providers, can give them the care they deserve.
