This week the guys finally actually take a look at the Unearthed Arcana for Psionics in Dungeons & Dragons 5E. For those who haven’t been around forever the new Psion class might feel new to you. For these old Grognards though it just doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Christopher has been listening to the new Ravenloft audio book, Heir of Strahd. With the great voice acting in it he took note that the drow character did in fact have an Aussie accent. They do in fact come from a land down under.
Jay walks the guys through a scenario that actually happened to him that was a rookie DM making a rookie mistake. The guys all give their sage advice on how a game master should actually run that scenario to make it better for all players. Sometimes the Grumpy Dungeon Masters do actually offer advice for running better games.

Dan has returned this week and had a little surprise in the mail. He finally got his copy of The Caverns of Thracia from Goodman Games. It’s a First Edition Dungeons & Dragons Mega Dungeon remade for more modern systems. Dan got the 5E edition while Jay got the DCC edition. They go over what all they received and dive into some of the details.
Christopher picked up an anthology of the original Dragonlance novels. As he’s a newbie to the setting the guys quickly dash his hopes of expecting great novels. That being said, the guys still love Dragonlance and talk about other good novels in the D&D genre.
Kristian brings up the question of are backstories necessary for RPG’s? The guys use their infinite knowledge and wisdom about RPG’s to determine how much backstory is needed. The verdict? Listen in to find out.

Grumpy Dungeon Master Dan is on vacation this week so it’s just the other 3 knuckleheads talking gaming. Jay recently picked up the Index Card RPG and walks through the book and the system. If you’re a brand new game master or want to learn we would highly recommend starting with this book. It’s simple, it’s clean, and it will help guide you to being a great game master.
Kristian talks about a book he got in recently called the Book of Extinction, by Mage Hand Press. It’s a Dungeons & Dragons 5e monster book with real life critters that have gone extinct. The neat trick is that the book gives you the stats for the real versions of it and then gives stats for monster versions of them. If you’ve ever wanted to doom your party with a flock of passenger pigeons this is the book for you.
Christopher decides to grump a bit about some Adventure League modules he obtained at Gary Con. Four modules about giants isn’t enough to make him happy. Jay also talks about an old Rifts video game that is getting a new makeover.

The Grumpy Dungeon Masters take a look at the second half of the Unearthed Arcana, horror edition. It does include a couple of the more popular Dungeons & Dragons Sub-classes in the Hexblade Warlock and the Shadow Sorceror. As always they talk about the good and the bad and grump a bit.
GDM’s Jay and Christopher finally received their long awaited copies of Skyraiders of Abarax. A kickstarter they backed 4 years ago which is a campaign setting for 5E D&D. Turns out it’s a bit of a mixed bag when they dive through the material.
GDM Jay also takes a look at the game system for Against the Darkmaster. Turns out it’s a bit of a mixed bag also. While Jay loves it he’s sure his players would hate it. Such is the way of deep involved RPG systems.

This week the guys take a look at some issues taking place with Goodman Games re-printing an old Judges Guild module, City State of the Invincible Overlords. They released a statement and are trying to do good things, but you will never make everybody happy.
Also this week is a look at the most recent Unearthed Arcana for Dungeons and Dragons. This one focuses on horror sub-classes. Some are old 5E sub-classes while a couple of them are brand new.

This week the guys decide to cover the changes to Dungeons & Dragons 5.5 with the new errata. While most of the changes are good and needed, GDM Christopher takes great offense to not being able to drop shields as a free action.
GDM Dan managed to run an in person Pirate Borg game to great success. It involved some naval combat, a whole ton of undead, and the dreaded Crocaroach. He also talks about how his rogue “died” in a 1E conversion game to 5E.
GDM Jay goes into the ecology of the spell Evard’s Black Tentacles. The spell doesn’t see a ton of use, but it is more used today than throughout the history of the spell. Here’s looking at the changes throughout the years!

GDM Dan’s Niece gave him an idea for an absolutely terrifying monster. The Crocaroach! It will bite you, maul you, drown you, and also flee in terror when the lights come on. Dan put together stats for this beastie for both D&D and Pirate Borg!
Christopher recently got a large haul of old school goodies. He and the guys go through the horde seeing whats in it and which books Christopher should start with.
Kristian recently had a bit of nostalgia and looked at a game he ran more than a decade ago called Numenera. A Sci-Fantasy setting using Monte Cookes Cypher system.

This week the guys have a chat about the current leavings from Hasbro, including Jeremy Crawford. While the details aren’t public the guys still speculate on reasons why and what is to come. The guys have returned from Gary Con and have many stories to tell. Before that happens though, we had to let GDM Christopher Rant about WotC some more and the killing of Sigil. Christopher also has changed his mind on whether or not the market is flooded with to many games at the moment. Apparently the gaming market is strong like an ox.
Everybody else details out their favorite moments from Gary Con, which included a little bit of PVP, a game of Mothership and the terror involved in that, rolling dice in an Oriental Adventures game with Zeb Cook, and getting a ton of things signed. All around one heck of a con.

This week the guys made it to Gary Con. While they were there they managed to sit down with the team from Orthane Productions, which are putting together an incredibly ambitious 5E setting titled Keshanar. The guys got to chat with Dave Hadden, the CEO of Orthane and the resident Egyptologist Dr Jill Waller.
Keshanar is a Dungeons and Dragons 5E setting based around the history and mystery of ancient Egypt. It includes many new sub-classes, spells, and monsters for players to sink their teeth into. The goal is to bring the fantasy aspect to gaming while staying true to the historical information about ancient Egypy that we have. Orthane has gone the extra mile though and digitally mapped out the entire city of Keshanar allowing players and game masters to wander among the city like never before.

While it is a high level game and somewhat dangerous for characters he managed to pull off the most unlikely of total party kills. This week the Demo for Solasta 2 came out and the guys all had to try it out, since it’s an incredible Dungeons & Dragons 5E video game. It’s just a demo so there is still a lot of changes to come, but the guys talk about the good and bad of it.
The guys are just a month away from their trip to Gary Con and they finally have their schedule for the event worked out. This includes for some of them a chance to game with Zeb Cook and even Heidi Gygax. GDM Christopher will even get his first chance to play some 1st Edition Dungeons & Dragons. He’s preparing by playing his first game of Shadowdark.

More new monsters from the upcoming edition of the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual. WotC released a video talking about the undead so we are talking about the undead also. Apparently there is now a Revenant the size of a house. Well, actually, it is a house. A house Revenant.
Also some new monstrosities and some of the changes to them and their classification. Apparently Kenku and now monstrosities. GDM Jay has always thought that about them. Also Owlbears become even more terrifying.
GDM Jay goes into the history of a long forgotten game. Dragon Dice. A game created by TSR that helped bankrupt the company. The guys are giddy with glee when they find out the game is still being made. Even more so when they find out that novels exist on it. Expect more to come about from this discovery.

The GDM guys generally like the section on cosmology, but don’t expect to run a planar campaign on it alone. As for the items section it’s a mix. Some good and some bad. Also GDM Christopher loses it when he finds out that Vecna’s hand and Eye are in the magic item section.
Lastly is bastions. They don’t dive to deep into it, but agree it will most likely go under used. Might work for some campaigns, but not most.

GDM Christopher is back from his hiatus with some more new toys to talk about. He recently got some old Ral Partha miniatures from the 80’s along with the 2nd edition of Shadowrun from 1992. He and GDM Jay talk a bit about the setting and the things within, especially the section on critters (aka monsters). To his surprise they didn’t all have cybernetic eyes and limbs.
The guys also have a back and forth on kobolds and how they have changed over the years. GDM Jay still insists they are dog creatures while the current version is more lizard-like. GDM Christopher chimes in with some info from Japan and how they are different there.
GDM Jay got to run his Valiant Universe super hero game and fills GDM Christopher in. While he doesn’t dive into the stories as of yet there is more to come.

GDM Jay had to invite an impromptu guest this week since GDM Christopher’s internet was out, so his buddy Mike fills in for the podcast. GDM Jay is going to be running a narrative super hero game this weekend for his players so the guys discuss the system that he’ll be using. The Valiant Universe RPG is a rather simple RPG system that leaves a lot of GM discretion. We’ll see how this turns out.
GDM Jay also goes over a brutal encounter from a 1st edition module that he has. The RPGA competition module “To Find a King” starts off with a bang and the guys chat about it some. Also they dive into the 5.5 Monster Manual cover arts and their encounter with a Xenomorph in a D&D Game.

GDM Christopher has an epiphany and realizes he has never created a monster of his own for D&D. The guys go over some of the monsters that GDM Jay has created and many of the modifications they use for altering monsters. In the process GDM Christopher unknowingly created a monster all his own. Now for him to just bring it to the table.
The guys take a look-see at some cover art for the upcoming DMG and another book, which touches heavily on the 80’s nostalgia for D&D. Bringing back Vengar and Warduke might be a clever move by Wotc.
GDM Jay has an issue of trying to find something interesting for him to play in a 5E Ravenloft game. While a changeling spy may not be the most creative it’s at least new to him. So few things he hasn’t done in 5E though leaves him with few choices, or so he believes. Could 5.5 shake things up?

The Grumpy Dungeon Masters came across a post about 44 rules for Dungeons & Dragons, which turned out to only be 16 rules. Since the original DM who posted these rules was incredibly Grumpy it just made sense for the guys to cover it.

In this weeks dreadful episode the guys talk about the Isle of Dread. It’s an adventure module from the expert set of basic Dungeons and Dragons, aka the blue box. The island itself is full of jungle adventures with ruins, lizardman tribes, and dinosaurs. Everybody has a favorite dinosaur and whatever it may be it’ll likely try to eat you in the Isle of Dread.
The guys also take some time to chat about Ravenloft and one of the most powerful NPC’s from the setting. The Darklord Azalin. Having caused 2 separate cataclysmic level events just trying to escape GDM Jay believe that he’s an underutilized character from the setting. Guess the world has enough liches already.
GDM Christopher also has a couple of tales from adventures league and WotC adds D&D 5.5 to the OGL…or at least they plan to.

Another week of very little RPG news so the guys shoot the breeze on topics of interest to them. They take a brief look at the Lego D&D adventure that was released with the new D&D Lego set. While it’s only a short adventure to introduce Lego fans to D&D it still is of interest to the Grumpy Dungeon Masters.
GDM Jay is all in on Eberron and he takes a look at what changed between the 3.5 Artificer class and the 5E Artificer. No surprise that he’s sorely disappointed in the way they changed the class over the years. Also the guys have a new employee working for them in the discord. So much was released at Gary Con last week. That just means the guys didn’t have any real news to chat about this week, so the guys just winged it. Fortunately GDM Jay had been stockpiling ideas for the week. He found out he knows nothing about Eberron, so rather than watch a video or read the Wiki he’s decided to run an Eberron Campaign. Always has to do things the hard way. He’s also found another Kickstarter he’s interested in, this time by Free League Publishing. The Games called Coriolis: The Great Dark and the odds are he never actually buys it.
It’s another week and Wotc had to fire another artist. This time instead of using AI it’s for straight up taking other people’s art and using it for their own. Will people never learn in this digital age? Also the guys talk about Game of Thrones. Don’t ask why.

Gary Con was this weekend and although our Grumpy Dungeon Masters did not make the trip, there was still a lot of things coming out over the weekend about Dungeons and Dragons 50th Anniversary. While GDM Christopher is most looking forward to Vecna Eve of Ruin GDM Jay was more interested in the Dungeons and Dragons Converse and a Lego D&D adventure. Both were however interested in the Making of Dungeons and Dragons book coming out later this year.
GDM Jay has been taking a look at all the different methods of determining random outcomes in RPG’s. From the various methods of dice, such as d20’s rolling over or under the target number, or even Jenga or drawing cards. He tosses the idea that rolling like Yahtzee or Poker would also be a viable way to work an RPG. As all things we’ll see where this brainstorm leads.

GDM Christopher and GDM Jay are once again joined by their friend Bruce the Beer Bandit. This week they are chatting about a number of things. Apparently the Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks is making his pitch to start using AI for D&D. Naturally the Grumpy Dungeon Masters have their own takes on this.
GDM Christopher talks about the new tabletop game he got which combines Power Rangers, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and My Little Pony under the Essence 20 rules system. Who doesn’t want to watch Zords go at it with Megatron? Also another week of Adventures League and another group of dead characters.
With the Beer Bandit joining them it’s time for another round of D&D Draft. This time around the guys draft best D&D settings. Not surprisingly GDM Christopher doesn’t quite grasp the rules. Who do you think drafted the best team this time out?

GDM Jay finally got an opportunity to run a game of Dungeon Crawl Classics again and it went exactly how you would expect a game full of level 0 characters to go. Tons of fun and a complete massacre.
GDM Christopher also managed to run his D&D 5E game and brought out a CR 26 creature to battle a group of level 3 characters. For once he didn’t kill everybody. The guys spend the moment to look into current creature design and ponder how broken it may be.

GDM Jay has a few games on his mind at the moment. Adventures on the Purple Planet, the soon to be released on Kickstarter Tomb of Gyzaengaxx, and his game of the year for 2024 Brindlewood Bay, which he can now buy. The real questions are can he get them all and even more importantly find time to play them. Signs point to no.
Him and GDM Christopher both recently got a PDF for the Skymasters Guidebook for the Skyraiders of Abarax. While they haven’t gone through it fully they still peak inside and take a look. Some interesting rules for running airship combat to be sure.
GDM Christopher is back to running games regularly and back to his usual ways. As usual he uses disintegrate liberally and even used an updated version of the necromancer. Lets just say it’s not really fair for the players.

Wotc recently released a complete miniature set for Tomb of Annihilation and the guys check it out. GDM Jay discovers that Wizkids also sells Pathfinder minis, which peaks his interest.
GDM Jay talks about what happens when you polymorph a large creature inside a smaller creature. This leads to an interesting conversation about hypnotizing chickens and how to handle it. Also Humblewood is now on D&D Beyond and GDM Christopher couldn’t be happier.

GDM Christopher finally returns from his extended trip behind the wood shed. He’s got a black eye and missing some teeth, but is none the worse for wear. Now that he’s returned he’s got tons of things on his mind, such as can a Paladin remove strep throat?
With the 50th anniversary of D&D this year Wotc finally releases their book release schedule. Players Handbook isn’t until September. This isn’t going to end well for Adventures League according to GDM Christopher. GDM Jay is fine with it because now he won’t have to spend any money until the second half of the year.
Speaking of spending money GDM Jay is wanting to get in on the new Dungeon Crawl Classics Backerkit, but has to dig through all their other products first. This included Lankhmar, which he recently learned is an old fantasy novel series. Even the old man can still learn new things. This plus many more topics this event packed week.

GDM Christopher is still missing so GDM Jay had his friend Mike step in for him. We think GDM Christopher is probably hiding in the woods somewhere living on nuts and berries, but we’re not sure. Either way the show must go on.
This week has been wild with speculation of Wotc selling D&D, which apparently isn’t true, or is it? GDM Jay has thoughts of his own and speculates what happens if they do sell. The guys also spend a bit of time checking out a board game Mike got called War of the Rings. A Lord of the Rings game from 1977. While they haven’t had a chance to play it yet, it’s definitely intriguing.
Also since GDM Christopher is missing GDM Jay decided to do another list and nobody could tell him no. This week it’s which of the best Sci-fi franchises should have RPGs and some that already do. Might be surprised what made the list.

GDM Christopher ran away to Disneyland and left GDM Jay to fend for himself. Thus far he has managed to keep the wolves at bay and is living off of canned tuna and jars of peanut butter. The Jelly ran out yesterday.
Fortunately he was saved by his co-gamemaster and friend Mike. While waiting for the end they decided to record a podcast where they talk about a number of things. GDM Jay goes over some more of the RPG he’s currently working on. Details will likely remain scarce for a long time, but progress is happening.
Wiz-kids decided to release 50th Anniversary D&D blind packs of miniatures using modern and original art as inspiration. The guys dive into some of the details and make fun of Bugbears. Also GDM Jay has found a new card game in Sorcery: Contested Realm.
Both guys walk through a list of some of the best games that came out last year or to be released this year. In the process GDM Jay already found his game of the year for 2024, which involves Grandma’s and Elder Gods.

We all know mimics can copy just about anything, but this seems a bit absurd. Or does it? GDM Christopher came across a few monsters that are a bit….uncouth. The least offensive of them is a mimic that can take on the shape of a toilet. Well, at least he now has a use for his outhouse mimic miniature.
GDM Jay decided he should weigh in online whether or not the rules matter and naturally it turned into a troll festival. Before things went sideways however there was actual discussion on what makes RPG’s a game and not just playing pretend. Naturally he has to get GDM Christopher’s opinion.

The Grumpy Dungeon Masters decided the new year was a good time to drop bombs on each other. GDM Waples came in swinging hooks by reminding GDM Jay that he had failed miserably at the Dungeon23 challenge. For those not familiar it was the idea of creating a single dungeon room every day for a year. In so doing you’d have a full dungeon by the end of the year.
GDM Jay countered with an overhand of letting GDM Christopher know that he’d actually created his own RPG and couldn’t help him with Dungeon 24. While he wasn’t forthcoming with the details yet he would be very busy working on this project. Will the project ever actually see the light of day? Only the future and diviners know.
Beyond all of that the guys chat some about the new AI art and WotC hullabaloo. Also GDM Christopher is back to streaming his game on Saturdays and as per usual nearly killed a character. GDM Jay has also found his game of the year for 2024 right out of the gates. He downloaded on DrivethruRPG a game simply titled A Fistful of Draculas. If you’ve ever wanted to play a Dracula in a spaghetti western this games for you.

It’s still around the holidays so the guys are taking it easy. Rather than find actual topics to talk about they invite a couple of GDM Christopher’s friends to hang out and chat gaming. Dungeon Lord Jay returns along with Bill, whom was on the podcast just last week.

This week the Grumpy guys are getting prepped for Christmas next week and have decided to unwrap their presents of talking about the MCDM RPG that’s currently in backerkit. While there is many unknowns with the game currently the fellas talk about what Matt Coville, the creator of it, has said publicly about the game. Some of what they hear they like and other parts not so much. Listen in to catch up on what the guys think about it.
Also in not surprising news Hasbro lays off 1,100 employees right before Christmas time. GDM Christopher dives into some of the numbers and people who were let go. If one thing will make the guys Grumpy it’s Christmas layoffs.
GDm Christopher got his Humblewood Book recently and is absolutely smitten with the cute animals that you can play in the setting. He spends a bit of time talking about it and tells GDM Jay about a bard subclass that “might” be better than the College of Whistles. Since it can’t summon a grumpy that seems unlikely.

This week the guys should be talking about the changes to the monk class in the Unearthed Arcana. Instead they ignore all of that and invite GDM Christopher’s wife Shelley to chat about the recent Kickstarter Crooked Moon. Since GDM Jay and Shelley both backed it they have a lot to say about it.
For those who aren’t familiar with Crooked Moon it’s a D&D5E setting based on classic folk horror. Full of haunts, haints, spirits, ghostly trains, werewolves, and everything that goes bump in the night. They have recently released some playtest materials for people to try out so the Grumpy Dungeon Masters take a peek at those and give their thoughts. Some good, none bad, and some that just needs a bit of work. This may be the only time you’ll hear the GDM guys not find something to complain about.

Tons of D&D news this week with Pax having just taken place and Wotc dropping all sorts of hot info for the Dungeons and Dragons 50th Anniversary year. That’s not all however as Ollie’s, the overstock chain has apparently ended up with a ton of D&D campaign cases and the Warriors of Krynn board game that caused the GDM guys to go on a hunt to find things.
The guys chat for a bit about the releases for next year with D&D 5.5, Vecna: Eve (Eye) of Ruin, and Quest From the Infinite Staircase. Despite Wotc insisting it is still 5th edition it’s a hill the Grumpy Dungeon Masters will die on that it’s 5.5
GDM Jay fills GDM Christopher in on a video he watched about people who have played the D&D VTT and really enjoyed it. Not just any scrubs mind you, but Stephen Glicker of Roll for Combat and Professor Dungeon Master. Will GDM Christopher get more interested in it or continue to yell at clouds? Listen in and see!

Need to start off by saying Cr’aig messed up the recording at around the 4:45 mark and it couldn’t be saved so if it skips conversations you’ll know why. Don’t worry, he has been punished properly behind the wood shed as usual for this transgression.
This week GDM Jay finally wrapped up his Pathfinder 2E campaign and goes into a rather long story of how the players got into the mess and how a single joke created an entire campaign.
GDM Christopher talks about the idea of “I know a guy” and how to use it in your tabletop games. It’s the idea of everybody knows somebody who can help with a situation and how the players can actually use it. GDM Jay talks about the contacts skill from other games such as World of Darkness and Marvel Superheroes as an alternative.
GDM Jay in his never ending quest to find stupid ideas in table top games comes across a 2nd edition spell that the Chronomancer would be proud to wield. The Reverse Time spell. A spell so incredibly broken even GDM Jay would be scared to use it.

The Grumpy Dungeon Masters are spending a bit of time doing some speculating on the future of Dungeons and Dragons and what comes next. With the deadline for D&D 5.5 fast approaching they are wondering when it will actually be released. There is also the long tail debate of D&D going to online VTT mostly and what happens then. Could Critical Role take it’s place as the top RPG?
GDM Christopher wonders if D&D still used the Vancian magic system that it’s always been known for or if that’s a dinosaur of the past? While a tiered system is part of the requirement so is memorizing spells, which is mostly used by Wizards at this point. Certainly a debate worth having.
GDM Christopher also changes his way of thinking and has finally come around to just giving everybody spells as special powers in 5E, since that’s what WotC already does.

The Grumpy Dungeon Masters have finally gotten a wish to come true. A TV channel of just D&D TV shows. GDM Jay has been dreaming of this day since he first began dungeon mastering in the days of yore. Sadly nobody will ever hear of or find this channel without the Grumpy Dungeon Masters help. It’s buried somewhere on Amazon free TV near the bottom of the depths.
GDM Jay ends up taking issue with there not being enough Dungeon Masters and tries to put a pin into exactly why this is. Is it because the game is too rules heavy, too much work, or maybe people are intimidated by seeing DM’s like Matt Mercer. The truth is that all of these things are true, but creative types should still give it a try.
GDM Jay also spends a little bit of time talking about the 2nd edition Dark Sun setting and is making plans to dive deeper into it in the future. GDM Chris however is looking forward to running the Tank Girl RPG. Yep, it’s a thing.

The guys had tons of topics this week and were all over the place. With the completion of the Crooked Moon RPG on Kickstarter the guys spend a little time diving into the known specifics of it and speculating on a ton more. GDM Christopher is the naysayer as usual and isn’t holding his breath on it being completed by next year where as GDM Jay takes a more optimistic approach.
They also spend some time talking about Wotc specifics on sales and actual numbers. Naturally GDM Jay makes up numbers to get his point across, but it seems Hasbro is staying afloat mostly due to Magic the Gathering.
With the Book of Many Things on the horizon the guys turn their attention to it as well. The Deck of Many Things has been a part of D&D lore for decades and usually brings a campaign to a crashing end so the guys toss out there thoughts on the item and why it should probably never be used.

So Planescape hasn’t been a thing since 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons, well over 20 years ago. With the announcement of a new set of books coming the guys were interested to find out more. They had their friend Kristian come on the podcast recently and talk to them and explain more about the setting.
For GDM Christopher it was all new information. For GDM Jay, he’d never actually played the setting before so even he learned some things. Well the new books have dropped and they have invited Kristian back again to go over the new material with them. As the resident Planescape expert his knowledge is helpful on whether the books are a good investment for a DM.
The overall verdict appears to be positive with some issues here and there. With the beating WotC has taken lately, this seems like a good thing. Sadly it’s at the end of the 5E lifecycle, but we’ll have to see if Planescape gets some love in 5.5 edition.

This week we found out that GDM Christopher thinks that Drow and Ettercap’s are best buddies. He’d probably be surprised to find out that Duergar and Sverfneblin don’t really get along either.
Fortunately GDM Christopher did manage to get his hands on a physical copy of the new Planescape setting so the guys talk some about it. More specifically they dive into the Ancient Time Dragon and it’s lack of Time abilities.
With the release of a new setting though, the guys have to do their usual summary of what’s wrong with it and what in the world is Wotc doing. They don’t dive too deeply though since they are waiting to have their Planescape expert friend back on soon to really dig into things.
GDM Jay has been reading up on Bridgetown lately and Troika!, the system that Bridgetown runs off of. In the process he managed to find a really creative initiative system using poker chips, beads, coins, or anything else that’s uniform.

This week the guys get to sit down and chat with David Schirduan. He is the co-creator of Overpowered, and the publisher of BridgeTown. For those who are unfamiliar, Overpowered is a single player (or multi-player if you have the will) game where you read through a module and find interesting ways to overcome challenges and earn points along the way. Bridgetown is a pastoral, liminal RPG setting of a never-ending, ever-crumbling bridge. Built for Troika, but usable anywhere. He also manages Technical Grimoire a shop for the games he has built, and there are many more, but also a blog for game review and design. \
The guys get some time to chat with him about what being a publisher is all about, what mistakes he made along the way, and thoughts to help anybody who wants to get into something like that. GDM Christopher and GDM Jay both gush over how awesome the recent book BridgeTown is.

Both the GDM guys actually got to run some tabletop games this week so naturally they have stuff to talk about. GDM Christopher’s D&D game is back to streaming on Twitch and he presented his wife’s character with a gift. Don’t ever accept presents from fae, random game masters, or GDM Christopher. Now shes a warlock.
GDM Jay on the other hand ran a Pathfinder game without a single ounce of combat, despite writing the scenario for it. Although he naturally forgot to require persuasion and deception checks his players did such a good job of role playing they managed to talk their way through the encounters.
The guys also chat some about a sad battle between Netflix and the RPG company called Evil Genius Games. It stems from an upcoming product for the soon to be released Netflix movie Rebel Moon. Netflix says one thing, Evil Genius Games says another. Lets hope it all gets worked out in the end.
GDM Christopher is also really grumpy about the state of Adventurer’s League and dives deep into the muck on it.

GDM Jay had the pleasure of playing Dungeons & Dragons Trivial Pursuit again and talks about a question nobody should know the answer to, until now. It involves the mating habits of Ettins. Nuff said.
He also got his first look at the Skyraiders of Abarax, the upcoming RPG setting by Dragonlance creators Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. He takes a precursory look at the good and bad from what he has seen. The setting looks amazing, but still has a long way to go before being completed.
GDM Christopher was able to run a module this weekend for the Bigby’s Glory of the Giants titled Starforge. The guys chat about the difficulties of the module and how his players ended up dealing with the scenario. GDM Christopher was also lucky enough to find himself a physical copy of the Book of Fiends for 5E D&D. While they have talked about it before it was worth going into again now that he had an actual copy.

GDM Jay was out of town the past few days LARPing so he didn’t really have much to talk about. Fortunately GDM Christopher had plenty of topics, such as Candy, Death, and the new playtest for D&D 5.5 edition. Oddly enough there doesn’t really seem to be any candy in Dungeons and Dragons. The GDM guys feels this is a travesty so naturally GDM Jay finds a list on Reddit of 100 candys for D&D.
While death is a part of any campaign GDM Christopher finds ways to circumvent that forever thanks to spells like revivify and the amazing spell reincarnate. Make sure to befriend a druid or become one yourself for ever lasting life.
They also wanted to talk some about the latest playtest material for 5.5 D&D. A quick look at changes for the barbarian, fighter, warlock, sorceror, and wizard, along with some mastery skills. GDM Christopher seems to be a little more at ease with the current state of playtesting, but that could just be the case since the guys have mostly stopped paying attention. Only time will tell.

Epic challenge giants are on the menu, along with Tieflings, Dragonheart movies, dice washing, Cassette Punk, and a few other topics. Also their buddy Bruce Burkart (The Beer Bandit) joins them for more silly talk.
This week is talking Baldur's Gate Rules (No Spoilers) and how they compare with D&D5e. Some rules in BG3 are good enough to implement in home games. Both DM's also have stories on magic items creating impossible scenarios and also allowing players to write their own stories.
GDM Jay hates steampunk in Forgotten Realms and thinks that Rolemaster has much better game master guides than D&D. Also a couple of stories about another new player rogue and a player who pulled a fast one on him from GDM Christopher.
Another week and another WotC scandal? This time it's about using AI with art for their products. Also GDM Jay is playing Baldur's Gate 3 and GDM Christopher is still killing entire groups of characters at his table.
A second dive into the Unearthed Arcana detailing Bigby's Book of Giants and Planescape keeps the guys busy. Also a new shiny book for GDM Jay. The Gamemasters Book of Astonishing Random Tables.
5th Edition D&D Planescape setting is just around the corner and the guys wanted to brush up on it before the release in October. They invited their friend Kristian to join them and give the low down on Sigil and the Outlands.

The boys are back and this time it’s just the 2 of them. It’s been an interesting week of news with WotC again and the guys are on top of it. Apparently they are going to be raising the prices of there books by $10 and making it more difficult for local game stores. Naturally the Grumpy Dungeon Masters have a lot to say about this tomfoolery.
It’s not all a downer though. GDM Christopher has a story to tell about a new player rogue who did new player rogue things. Also his daughter helped him to create a dungeon that he’s going to run in the future and it’s better than his own dungeons. Hey guys. This week we had another great guest…or in fact 3 great guests. David Kenzer, Brian Jelke, & Jolly Blackburn from Kenzer & Company (Kenzer Co). For anybody not familiar with them they have been around the table top gaming scene since the 90’s and are responsible for some of the amazing products we’ve talked about on this show before. This week the guys were fortunate enough to sit and chat with none other than Luke Gygax. For anybody who doesn’t already know this, he is the son of Gary Gygax and the creator of Gary Con along with a number of other things. The GDM guys get to ask all of the important questions that every fan of D&D ever wanted the answers to…such as how much does he lift and how he keeps his beard immaculate. This past week was the D&D Creators Summit, where WotC invited a bunch of creators to come look at their new Virtual Table Top (VTT) and boy was it a doozy. Needless to say it didn’t go as planned. While they did show off the new VTT and it looked pretty good the Q&A turned into the guests ripping into them for their awful business practices and actually asking the hard questions. The Dungeons and Dragons movie is finally out and the guys have finally seen it. They wait until the last half of the podcast to talk about it, thus avoiding spoilers for those who aren’t as lucky. They then spend the last half of the podcast gushing about how good it was. Seriously though, it was pretty good, so go see it.
GDM Jay finally gets to talk about the Oriental Adventures Rokugan game he’s going to be running and the amount of research and reading he’s having to do. Seems like a second job to him. Natural disasters are a part of life. When you add magic into the mix the term “natural disaster” takes on a slightly different meaning. The Grumpy Dungeon Masters take a stab at what constitutes a natural disaster and how to even try and utilize something like that in your game. Oh, and of course Tsunaming the Underdark gets mentioned again.
GDM Jay is enamored with some of the new books that he’s obtained recently and dives into the Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader game some. On top of an incredible setting of grim dark sci-fi in the far future the game itself appears to be quite solid with good rules. Hopefully someday he gets to actually run it.

New video for the D&D movie Honor Among Thieves has dropped and it’s straight fire. Several minutes of running through a magical maze along with the original characters from the D&D cartoon have got the GDM guys abuzz. GDM Christopher has changed his tune and is really hyped for the movie again. Just a few more weeks to go.
GDM Jay stumbled into a huge collection of table top games and has a quandary of what system to run next. Should it be Werewolf The Apocalypse, Dune, Call of Cthulhu, Rogue Trader, or Legend of the 5 Rings? The one thing we can say for sure is that GDM Jay probably won’t choose just one.

Paizo decided to release a statement about the use of AI generated text and art in their products and GDM Christopher is unsure of how to take the statement. GDM Jay helps to try and make some sense of it and also take some shots at WotC.

Apparently GDM Jay is now just working alongside of ChatGPT when doing this podcast. The 2 of them did have some good conversation though.
The GDM’s take a dive into the current play test D&D 6th edition that details out the “new and improved” Druid and the Paladin. To nobody’s surprise the guys have many thoughts about the changes. Is the 6th Ed druid better or is this one for the birds?
There is more chatter as well about the current magic system that’s used for D&D and could it be done better? I’m not certain that mana potions is the way to go, but having a simple column of memorized spells isn’t necessarily the best either. Guess the guys will have to use their DM magic and find a better solution.
So the long time debate of does D&D have to many rules is also on the table. The current iterations are filled with rules for this and rules for that with 6th edition leaning heavily into even more rules. Looks like the guys get to take a stab at the debate.

It Finally happened. With all of the recent OGL nonsense going on GDM Christopher has taken a hard look at the game he loves and found it wanting. He has finally reached the place where GDM Jay has been for a while and desires more. Will it be Pathfinder? Will it be Shadowrun? Maybe Call of Cthulhu? Who knows, but the ride will be interesting.
GDM Jay has a new TTRPG coming out soon that he’s actually really interested in. Apparently they are going to be releasing a Gloomhaven RPG to stand along side the award winning board game. Only time will tell if the game is any good.

So the war is over and WotC has lost. They decided to back off completely with the OGL and even went as far to make the rules for 5E creative commons. We’ll continue to keep an eye on them, but for now it’s over so we’re back to our normal shenanigans on the podcast. This means Waples can tell more stories about how he messed up in his game or killed more PC’s.
GDM Jay managed to find the Tarrasque of Pathfinder and find out some history about the great beast. Speaking of Paizo the guys talk about how the company has been killing it the last month. It’s a new year and the Grumpy Dungeon Masters spent their holiday party playing Dungeons and Dragons Trivial Pursuit like any good geek would. Happy to say the game was challenging enough even for our two expert DM’s with their encyclopedic knowledge of the game.
GDM Jay also talks some about the recent tabletop RPG release of Dark Souls. For those who are familiar with the video game this might be something of interest to you. GDM Jay doesn’t know much about it, but he still feels that it sticks close to the source material, especially since his players have told him as much.
So with 2023 upon us there is a new thing going about called Dungeon23 for all game masters. It will help with creativity and building dungeons and both of our Grumpy guys are giving it a go. Tune in to see what that’s about!

It’s another week and the guys are back at it again. It’s the post Christmas episode so the guys get to talk about the goodies each of them obtained from Santa’s bag of goodies. GDM Christopher got the god of all Gelatinous Cubes and GDM Jay got himself a handy dandy new book to help with his campaigns.
This week WotC released info on the upcoming changes to their open gaming license, so naturally the GDM crew have to toss in their 2 electrum pieces on it. Good or bad they certainly have opinions.
So GDM Jay recently got the Pathfinder 2.0 Core role book and has been on a tear reading through it. He decides to chat with GDM Christopher, the Dungeons and Dragons purist, about what he likes about the system. Is there any common ground to be had? We shall see!

So we invited our good buddy and Grumpy Dungeon Master in arms Bruce Burkart to join in and talk gaming this week. GDM Jay finally got a look at some of the 5E Dragonlance stuff and lets his opinion be known, specifically about the Kender and Lunar Sorcerors. The outcome isn’t surprising in the least and it’s a Grumpy good time.
GDM Christopher decided to purchase himself as an early Christmas present a cat size Tiamat miniature. When I say cat sized I don’t mean miniature cat sized. I mean actual cat sized. What do you do with a miniature that large? You let it kill some characters!
So with Bruce being on the podcast and the guys hating on WotC so much lately it was inevitable that Bruce would try to convert the guys to Pathfinder. GDM Jay has a book on the way to peruse, but GDM Christopher is a tougher nut to crack. Does the system really matter, is Pathfinder better than D&D 5E, or should we all just be playing Mazes and Monsters? Listen in to find out!

The boys have a nice long chat this week about the Cleric Unearthed Arcana that’s being used for the playtest for 6th edition. Some of it’s good, some of it’s bad, some of it’s pointless, and some of it just makes GDM Christopher grumpier.
GDM Christopher points out to GDM Jay a Baldur’s Gate 3 Collectors Edition that is being released when the game releases next year. Needless to say the guys have some fun taking this thing apart and seeing if it’s actually worth the hefty price tag.
