Jen: Hello, okay, we're live. Welcome, everyone, to MomCave LIVE, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor. I'm Jen, and I have author Cynthia Hammer here with me tonight. We have so much to talk about. Hey, Cynthia.

Cynthia Hammer: Hi, Jen. It's nice to be with you again.

Jen: Thank you. Yeah, I was a guest on Cynthia's podcast just a little while ago, and I'll tell you all about that. But we'd like this to be interactive so we can read the comments. If you have any questions or comments, just pop them in there, and we'll be watching it and talking with everybody. So Cynthia wrote a book. First of all, congratulations on actually writing an entire book because not everyone can do that.

Cynthia Hammer: Well, especially if you have ADHD, it's a little hard to do. Yeah. I only did it because I was forced into isolation because of COVID.

Jen: Oh, we can all blame COVID for good and bad on many things. It made us do some things we wouldn't have otherwise done.

Cynthia Hammer: I think at least for women, I talked to a lot of women who figured out their ADHD because of COVID. So it was good in that way. They were home watching TikTok and Instagram, and they started recognizing themselves.

Jen: Right? Well, that is definitely what happened to me and some of my family. So I would love to talk about that. Before we do, I'll flash up the book, and the link to the book will be in the comments, but this is Cynthia's book. And when, oops, see, I'm having all my crazy things happen in here with my screen. We don't need to see you. Okay. So when, umm, there we go. Now we want you to be next to me. The technical difficulties, there we go. Okay, that's much better.

Jen
Well, welcome to MomCave LIVE where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor. I'm Jen from MomCave. And our guest tonight, I'm super excited to talk to you because I follow her. I watch all her videos, they're super helpful, yet she's also funny and not condescending. And she's gonna tell us how she's gonna tell us about a book that she just put out called, how to parent, but it's not that kind of book. It's not like how to parent I'm telling you what to do. Its parent, its capital P dot a dot, it's the initials parent, which is an acronym. So I'm going to introduce Jackie, tell us why your book's title is an acronym.

Jackie Santillan
Well, hi, first of all, thanks for having me this and what a lovely introduction. Thank you so much. Well, okay, so I wrote this book, because I am, I didn't invent parenting. Obviously, I'm not the first parent. I didn't invent gentle parenting. But I've always been a big fan of mnemonics and acronyms to help me remember how to do things. And so I started doing that on my social media, and people really responded. And it's helped them to remember some of the strategies. I think, when you're in the middle of a tantrum or meltdown, or like big emotions of any kind. It's really hard to remember what you've learned either. However you learned it, you know? So it's helpful to have an acronym that you can be like, oh, yeah, I remember when my kids and my kids having a meltdown. And this is what I should do. And so it's a book called How to parent which stands for possibly actually remember everything next time. And every chapter is an acronym or a mnemonic to help you remember what to do in those big situations.

Jen
I love that you call it the stop drop and roll of parenting. We all remember to stop drop and roll, right? Yeah, I would definitely misfire prevention.

Jackie Santillan
I believe it I would expect anything less. Anyway. Wait, you like you taught it?

Jen: Welcome to MomCave LIVE where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor. Hi, I'm Jen, and I'm here with Tirralan Watkins, who is the Tinseltown mom. Hi, we're going to go live on all the platforms. So give me one second. Let's see if it goes live on Instagram as well. Maybe we're... Oh, wow. Okay, there we are. So, Hi, tell everybody how you became Tinseltown Mom.

Tirralan Watkins: Well, it started when I was just a child, of course, a daughter. So growing up, I was always pursuing acting. I'm from the Bay Area. So in the Bay Area, I was doing theater and commercials and everything that I could do in the Bay Area. But we all know that the capital of the entertainment industry is Hollywood. Totally. Yeah. So after I got my undergrad degree in communications, I decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue my acting career further. So as I was pursuing my acting career, I, and I'm not telling the full story because it's so long. So, of course, you know, as you're pursuing a career, you do dabble into other things. So at the time, I started my own talk show, a local talk show called "Impact." It was on a cable access station, yes.

Jen: The internet's, yes, cable access.

Tirralan Watkins: Yes, your cable access. Yeah, yeah. So I was doing my show on cable access 20-plus years ago, and actually, my first Tinseltown mom before I became Tinseltown mom was Sherri Shepherd. It was before she was a mom as well, but she was my first guest, yeah, for my show. So I did the show, and I interviewed an Olympian and some other actresses, comedians, etc. While I was still pursuing my acting career, eventually, at my church, I decided to join a small writing group called..

Jen: See, it says "live." It says "live." We're completely live. Welcome to MomCave LIVE, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor. Tonight, I'm live with my buddy Meredith. You might know her from "That's Inappropriate." All things that are inappropriate. We're just doing great. Are we halfway through summer?

Meredith Masony: I think so. Well, my kids go back to school on August 10.

Jen: So you go back to school much sooner than us.

Meredith Masony: Yes, Florida goes back, but we were out on May 25.

Jen: Oh my god. Okay, so we're just shifted. It's the same thing. I'm trying to make us go live on all the platforms and go live on Instagram. Let us know if you're watching. Leave a comment on Facebook. Say hello. We're going to talk about how we survive with kids during the summer. So, Meredith, do you have a busy summer?

Meredith Masony: Well, let's see, my kids are 17, 14, and 12. My oldest just got back two days ago from seven days at a pole vaulting camp. When my daughter leaves, he leaves again on Friday for another pole vaulting camp. My daughter leaves on Sunday for a week at a camp in Tennessee, which isn't even in the same state as we are. And then she comes home on Saturday, and I get to wash all of her clothes, repack everything, and then drive her to her next camp the day after.

Jen: Oh, wow.

Surviving Busy Schedules and Enjoying a Staycation.

Meredith Masony: At that camp, she's going with my youngest. Today and tomorrow are the only two days this summer that all of my kids were home at the same time. So we decided to make a quick staycation out of it, just so we could spend some time with them. It's been brutal with sports, camps, and everyone's activities......

Jen: Welcome to Momcave Live, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor. And my guest tonight doesn't feel like night yet. Meredith Ethington: Correct.

Jen: Yeah. What's the book about Meredith?

Meredith Ethington: So it's about what you would expect it would be about with the title. I mean, cover everything from the heaviness of the mental load that all moms carry to mental illness. I talk about toxic positivity in there and how that's harmful to us as moms.

Jen: That's awesome. Okay, so we're gonna give away a copy. Yeah. So we'll give it away to somebody who comments. And we'll also; I'll put up the link for the book, and the first five people that order Meredith is going to sign one.

Meredith Ethington: I'm gonna send a signed bookplate, which is nice. You can stick it in your book.

Jen: An autograph, man. Yeah, yeah. Awesome. So um, well, first of all, we, you know, you've talked before, let's see, I'm a mess.

Meredith Ethington: Don't worry,

There is no such thing as perfection in parenting.

Jen: Clearly, I was a mess before becoming a mother, but becoming a mother just......

Jen: So, welcome to Momcave Live, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor yet. I'm Jen from Momcave, and my guest to hang out with us tonight is Amanda, who is @thedudeMom. Hey, Amanda.

Amanda: Hello. Thank you for having me

Jen: Of course. So, dude mom makes me assume that you have dudes as opposed to dudettes in your life. Is that it?

Amanda: That is an accurate but funny story. I have had people email me and like see, like little pitches or something. They're like, Oh, hey, dude, you see that as my name. And I even had somebody once think that I was a dude who was a mom. So clarify, I am not a dude. I am a mom.

Jen: Yes, right. But you did tell me you're from California originally. So that's very like dude, like, yeah. Cool. So I heard about your book. And I thought that would be fun to talk about. So, everybody, Amanda has a book, which I could probably put on the screen at some point. But we'll get to that. It's on Amazon, of course, where all the books are. And tell us about the book, what's it called, and what's in it.

Amanda: It's 50 Things to Do in Baby's first year. And it is a book that is written more, not from like, the 50 Like milestones that you need to cover as a parent or anything. It's more about keeping your sanity as a mom, and yeah, that you should do to maintain yourself and your humanity because I don't know about the rest of you guys, but that my mother, my early mothering days nearly snatched the humanity away from me...

Jen: I’m very excited to have my friend Dena here tonight because it’s more like just a hangout where we can all talk. Then you know, an interview because that would be way too serious for us.

Dena Blizzard: Yeah, that’s not my speed.

Jen: That’s not her speed at all. If you don’t know Dena, she’s One Funny Mother in all the places, and she is a very funny mother, and the best thing is, I can’t believe you go live every single day. In the morning, right?

Dena Blizzard: I do. With no plan and no content to speak of. And then we just find out what the world wants to talk about in the morning.

Jen: Amazing. I really admire that because I don’t think, I don’t want to talk to anyone in the morning. Anyone in the morning for like, a long time and my, I’m never like ready. I see you in the morning. Sometimes I see you pop up going live when I’m driving my kids to school. And I’m often still in my pajamas with like, no makeup on and you know…

Dena Blizzard: Not all the time. Well, the funny thing is if there were people here I wouldn’t want to talk to any of those people. But random strangers like on the internet. I’m like, come on in. Let’s have a cup of tea. And let’s just talk about nonsense so.

Jen: It’s still much better to just talk to random people on the internet....

We know you've heard the old saying it takes a village! In this day of age, we understand it may be hard, but not impossible, to have your own village.

Jen and Florence Ann Romano discuss the importance of building a "village" of supportive relationships, particularly for mothers. They emphasize that building a village isn't always easy, and it takes time and effort to find the right people who align with your values and personalities. Florence also stresses that having a full social calendar doesn't necessarily mean you have the right people in your life, as the right people should "fill up your cup, not deplete it." She shares her personal experience about how one of her best friendships was formed through a mutual friend and how she encourages readers to share their own stories of how they met their best mom friends.

Jen: Welcome to MomCave Live, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven't lost our sense of humor. I'm Jen. And we're here today with Florence Ann Romano. And we've got some fun stuff to talk about. Welcome, Florence.

Florence Ann Romano: I'm so happy to be here. Thanks for having me.

Jen: Florence has a book that's about to come out any day now. Right?

Florence Ann Romano: February 21st. I dream about it at night. I get nervous. I wake up in the morning. I'm like, is it February!?

Jen: Almost, it's almost February. So the book is called "Build your Village." We all know the saying, you know, it takes a village to raise a child. Sometimes it's really, really hard to find that village. I feel like I'm wandering the earth, being like, where is this village? Where are these people? Because some of the villages I've wandered into haven't worked out or don't make me feel as welcome. You got to find your village. So that's what we're going to talk about today. Right? Yeah. Florence, tell us a little bit about the book, how it came about, and everything.

Florence Ann Romano: I'm just I'm holding it next to him because, honestly, not even just because we're doing this live, but because it's like always sitting here in my chair with me.

Jen: It's like another baby, you birthed another baby.

Florence Ann Romano: I mean, here it is, this is the galley copy. The reason why honestly, I wrote it was during COVID, I was looking at what was the common denominator for all of us going through it. And all of us knew on a global level what it felt like to lose our community to lose our village, to lose our people. And it started me thinking about the.......

Renee Rhinehart: I feel like we did it. So this is it. We're good. We got we did it. This is our accomplishment for the day.

Jen: We're here. We went live. We haven't done anything live yet. But we went live. There you go. There you go. And I still have kids at home. My kids haven't gone back to school yet. Crazy. Crazy. Raise your hand if you still have kids at home. Give us a comment. Tell me what to do, help!

Renee Rhinehart: So how many days is that? Huh?

Jen: I didn't count the days if I counted the days, I would maybe go insane.

Renee Rhinehart: Definitely over two weeks, though.

Jen: It's been over two weeks. I love them to death, but they need to go to school. You know, they need those teachers who like know how to keep them calm and in line and I'm not good at that. Honestly. So, but we just finished the holidays. The holidays are now sort of officially behind us. Congratulations, everyone. Every mom who was making magic and did it all did all the things. Did you have a good holiday, Renee?

Renee Rhinehart: I did. So I have a 15-month-old at home so

Jen: I didn't know you I littles that little congratulations.

Renee Rhinehart: Thank you. Yeah, so I'm a new mom, kind of sort of still learning the ropes. Yeah, this year was a lot about wrapping paper, and Oh, wow. People climbing stairs, saying hohoho

Jen: Hohoho. And did you have to protect your tree from getting climbed?

Renee Rhinehart: Shockingly, no. I'm so jealous. I know. Because literally when I was putting up I'm like, am I gonna have to put like, you know, whatever. They're not a gate but a plastic. Oh, is this finally for the next two years?

Jen: Yes. Someone's gonna climb your tree. Good morning, Megan. Megan saying good morning. Over on Facebook.....

Samantha Reynolds: Hello. Hi, Jen.

Jen: Are you a SAM or Samantha?

Samantha Reynolds: I'm totally a Sam. Yeah, I'll clean my room if you call me Samantha.

Jen: Good. I want to be like, you know, casual. So I felt like Sam is much more than smart, casual. Cool. Okay, so. So if you don't know who Sam is, she goes by the nom de plume- Is that how you say it? The very fancy way of saying her writer's name. Her name is Bent Lily on Instagram. And despite being a mom like the rest of us and having a real job and everything, Sam writes a poem every single day for how many years now?

Samantha Reynolds: Well, I can count because my son's 12. So yeah, 12 years. Holy...

Samantha Reynolds: So I was given advice. I don't know if you remember this, but I was get advice when I was pregnant. Like this first year of you being a mom, and this first year of your new baby's life. It's so fleeting, like it's gonna fly by, before you know it, it'll be gone. And really,it might be hard, but like, really try to savor it. Because, you know, before you know it, you know, this little like infant phase will be over. And I was on deck for it. Like I'd you know, I've been reading, doing yoga. I was like, ready, I was like, I'm gonna meditate my way through this, I'm really going to be observing. Sorry, I'm--

Jen:Welcome to MomCave LIVE, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven’t lost our senses of humor. I’m Jen and we have a really fun guest today. More than fun, she’s going to be really helpful too. Hi, this is Debbie Osbourne. Hi, Debbie.

Debbie Ausburn:
Hi, how are you?

Jen:
Good. Great to see you. The title of your book is exactly what we want to talk about here. And it’s “Raising Other People’s Children: What Foster Parenting Taught Me about Bringing Together a Blended Family.” So we have a lot of blended families that are around here on MomCave. And we’ve got their foster families, their step-parenting families, grandparenting families. Every kind of family imaginable, and we need to know how to make it work.

Jen of MomCaveTV:

Welcome to Momcave LIVE, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven’t lost our sense of humor. I’ve certainly lost my mind. I’m Jen. I’m happy to be here doing live, which we haven’t done in a while. And we have a special guest today, which is, tada. They’re going to show her in 3..2..1.. Maia Haag. From “I See Me!” books. Maia is here, because she is going to talk with us about holiday traditions. So first of all, Maia is the co-founder of “I See Me!” books, which are personalized books. They’re awesome. We’ve had a few in our family. And they have a new one coming out for Christmas that we’ll talk about. Maia, I assume you’re a mom. Yes?

Maia: I’m a mom of three. Yeah.

Jen: I knew there were yes, multiple children.

Maia: Mom three times over.

Jen: So do you have any, like, what’s your biggest holiday tradition that you do in your family?

Family Holiday Tradition: Santa always drops a Present on our roof by mistake

Maia: We have two big ones. I would say one is Santa always drops a present on our roof, by mistake, with his sleigh and so every Christmas morning the kids run out. And my husband uses a rake and there’s snow on the roof because we live in Minnesota. We have to find the present on the roof and rake it down. And it always bounces off the driveway, so it can’t be anything too electronic, and it’s soggy because it’s been sitting in the snow.

Jen: It’s something that can’t really get wet, right?....

Interviewing Tori Spelling was a dream! Tori has been a staple on our small screens for decades, so for many (me!), it feels as if we are lifelong friends with the star. But the truth is we are actually just starting to get to know the real Tori. After a stint on The Masked Singer, she revealed how much people's preconceived notions of her had defined her. But the reality is she is so much more! We talked about Tori's newfound confidence, how she is instilling that in her kids, and how she keeps her family on track. Take a look at the full interview below.

Bethany:
Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. I'm Bethany Braun-Silva, and today I'm going to be breaking it down with someone I've admired and really fan-girled over for a really long time, and that's Tori Spelling. Tori is a mother of five, an entrepreneur, a host, and of course, an actress. We love Tori, and I can't wait to dive into all things motherhood and her new show. Stay tuned.

Well, Tori, let's jump right in. You've had such a busy week between the Masked Singer and then your kids starting school yesterday. We have so much to cover, but I did want to start with the Masked Singer because I was so moved by your Instagram post, the one where you talk about how the Masked Singer brought you so much confidence. I know as a mother, especially, when we instill confidence in ourselves, it helps to instill confidence in our kids. Can you tell us a little bit about what that experience was like?

Tori Spelling:
Singing in public, singing and singing in public, and performing in public, huge fears. Lifelong fears of mine. I'm raising five kids, especially two really strong females. I really wanted to lead by example. When I started my journey working with Masked Singer, it was my biggest fear. I'm like, "Oh my gosh, I can't do this." Then I'm like, "Wait, no. You tell your girls that they can do anything and be anyone they want to be. You need to take on your biggest fear, and do it. Bad or good. Who knows what the outcome's going to be? You've got to dive in." The journey doing it has been so amazing because what I didn't realize is that it's not just singing and performing. It's actually being behind a mask....

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi and welcome back to another episode of the Breakdown with Bethany. I'm Bethany Braun-Silva and today my guest is Joy Bauer. You've probably seen Joy on The Today Show where she's doling out tips and tricks on how to stay healthy. We're going to be talking about sending kids back to school and all the meal prep that goes with it. She's also going to be sharing some healthy, easy meal recipes for parents and also telling us how we can navigate the supermarket stress-free. So stay tuned.
All right, well, Joy, first of all I have to say I'm such a fan. I love your segments on The Today Show. I am constantly just trying to keep up with you, sort of aspire to all your healthy tips and tricks. But I am a mom of two so sometimes that is incredibly hard, especially as we're gearing up to head back to school. One of the things that sends me into a spiral is having to prepare meals for two kids and I know you have some tips for that. So what do you have to say about meal-prepping as we head back to school?

Joy Bauer:
Well so many people share the chaos of exactly what you described. And my kids are older right now. So I have three kids but oh boy, I vividly remember those hairy, scary moments like in the morning. Also, what are you going to make for dinner sort of thing. And I think the number one solution that is so incredibly helpful is to preplan. So I'm just going to put that out there. And I know people are probably thinking, oh my God, another thing to put on the to-do list but I'm telling you, if you get ahead of it, it just makes life that much more simpler and seamless and it's going to be a game-changer for you for sure.
So today, I'm really excited because I'm here as the dean of the protein prep school talking about eggs. And eggs are so wonderful for a number of reasons. One, I think they're universally loved. I personally can eat eggs for breakfast, for lunch, for a snack, and for dinner. And they have limitless ways to prepare them.

Welcome back to another episode of
The Breakdown With Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva, and today my guest is actress, author, host, chef, mom, Tiffani Thiessen. I’m such a fan of Tiffani, so I was really excited about the opportunity to talk to her. In this conversation, we’re going to be talking about the importance of the meningitis vaccine for preteens and teens. It’s a lot more important than you may have thought. We’re also going to be talking about how parents can stay present with their kids, and I’ll give you a hint…. Tiffani wrote a book all about it. You’re definitely going to want to check this one out.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi, Tiffani. Thank you so much for joining me. I’m really, really excited that you’re here, but I wanted jump right in because this is a really important topic and you have a lot of important information to share. So tell us all, why you decided to partner with the “It’s About Time” Initiative.

Tiffani Thiessen:
Yes. Well, Leslie’s actually with the
National Meningitis Association and I think both of us being parents, of course, and being moms, we’re here to spread the word about how it’s important to really do anything we can to help protect our children. And that’s why we’re here.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
And you have Harper, what is she almost 11?

Tiffani Thiessen:
She’s actually almost 12.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Almost 12.

**Tiffani Thiessen:
My daughter actually got her first dose of MenACWY, it’s a mouthful. She actually got it last year right after she turned 11, which is the recommended age for CDC for the first dose, and the second dose is actually at 16. And sadly we’ve been seeing that the numbers have dropped a lot and so that’s why we’re trying to make it a big awareness of how important it is. Leslie has a very deep story with her about...

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. My name is Bethany Braun-Silva, and today my guests are Callie Christensen and Kelly Oriard. They’re the co-founders and co-CEOs of Slumberkins, which is a children’s brand dedicated to helping parents support their children’s emotional learning. And while you might not see this episode for quite some time, today is May 25th, 2022 a day after 19 children and two teachers were gunned down in Uvalde, Texas. I’m going to be talking to Callie and Kelly about how we can help our children through times of trauma. I know this is just a minor speck in what I could possibly be doing to give back here, but I hope you enjoy the episode. I hope you take something away from it. And if you can please head over to Mom’s Demand Action or Everytown for Gun Safety to donate. Enough is enough.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
I really do appreciate you both being here with me. I have been a fan of this brand for quite some time, and actually we’ve met in person in New York City. And I know you had a lot of things cooking back then, so I can wait to get into it. But for people who don’t know, tell us what Slumberkins is all about.

Callie Christensen:
Yeah. Slumberkins is an emotional wellness brand for families that deliver therapeutic tools through the form of publishing and plush, and content, and try to just meet families where they are in their emotional development journey. And right now it shows up through our cute cuddly characters like Bigfoot that helps promote self-esteem, Yeti that promotes mindfulness. We have an alpaca for stress relief. All of the different characters are kind of mascots of these different emotional pillars.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
And what sort of like, how did you guys get started in this? Because it seems like so necessary. Right. But then what was, I guess my question really is what was the initial inspiration? And then what was the evolution like to the plushies and the books? Like, why did you choose that route?...

Jen: Welcome to “MomCave LIVE,” where we may have lost our minds but we haven’t lost our senses of humor. I’m Jen from “MomCave,” and my guest this week is Tiffany Hamilton, who I’m gonna call a “mompreneur.” Is that how you would pronounce it?

Tiffany Hamilton: Yes.

Jen: A mompreneur. She is the founder and CEO of Victor Wear, and it’s an amazing company. We’re gonna talk all about her mission and why it’s important. Welcome, Tiffany.

Tiffany Hamilton: Oh, thank you. Thanks so much for having me. Happy to be here.

Jen: Thanks for being here and dealing with all of the technical issues that we always seem to have

Tiffany Hamilton: No worries.

Inspirational Activewear
Jen: Tiffany, can you tell everybody how the idea for your company came about?

Tiffany Hamilton: Yes, so I’m actually the co-founder. My son is actually a founder. He is 15, he has high functioning autism, and this is an idea that we’ve had for a while. He’s very artistic, so originally we were thinking, “Oh,” you know, “We should do T-shirts with your art,” and he’s kind of grown out of that. And the idea has evolved into inspirational activewear. So it’s something we’ve been planning for a while, and we just decided to just do it.

Jen: Just do it.

Tiffany Hamilton: And launch in April. But the whole idea now is around empowering people with disabilities and really creating economic opportunities. As I mentioned, my son, 15, he’ll actually be 16 very soon, next week.

Jen: Wow.

Creating Opportunities For Teens And Adults With Autism
Tiffany Hamilton: And yeah, so, you know, getting very close to the working world and I want to create opportunities for him and for other autistic adults and teens because the unemployment rate in the disability community is really staggering. Like there’s, you know, 85% of people with developmental disabilities are unemployed.

Jen: Wow.

Tiffany Hamilton: And I don’t want that to be my son. That shouldn’t be anyone. It infuriates....

Hello, world, welcome to “MomCave LIVE” where we may have lost our minds, but we haven’t lost our sense of humor. I’m Jen, and I have two guests today because they are the cohosts of the podcast, “Circling the Drain.” And “Circling the Drain” is… Let me see if I get your tagline right.

Okay.

It’s about the period before you stop getting your period.

That’s perfect.

That is correct, that’s exactly perfect.

It’s brilliant, did you hire a copywriter for that?

That’s me.

No, yeah. Can I say that any brilliant tagline that comes out of anything that we do is all Ellie. It’s got nothing to do with me and we didn’t hire a professional, Ellie is the professional.

Thanks, Julia.

Well, that’s what I love about Ellie, she’s clever, she has her way with words and some of the words are naughty, but…

Most.

Most.

Most, a lot of them are, so even though it’s the middle of the day, your children shouldn’t watch this broadcast. They hopefully are in school, if they’re of age, and yeah. And speaking of age, that’s what we’re gonna talk about, right?

Yes, yes.

Yeah, you guys tell everybody quickly where they can find the podcast and just a little… What is it? Before we go into this whole perimenopause situation?

Julia?

Well, you can find us wherever you get your podcast. We are everywhere, we’re on Spotify, Apple, Stitcher, all the places.

The places.

Yeah, everywhere.

The websites, the Facebook.

Yes, you can get it, you can go right to our website and listen there, yeah.

The website is circlingthedrainpodcast.com, that’s probably the easiest place because it links to everything else.

Right, right.

That’s right.

And if you are watching this, you are on either Instagram or YouTube or Facebook so you know that they’re on those places. And you put out a new episode every week?

Every other week.

Every other week.

I like that, it’s biweekly.

We are biweekly because we-

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva, and today my guest is Vanessa Coppes. Vanessa is the owner and CEO of BELLA magazine and one of five of the only Latina editors-in-chief in the U.S. She is absolutely a force, and she’s also a mom. We’re going to learn all about Vanessa’s story and her tips for leadership, and of course, how to run a business like a boss. Definitely check this one out, you guys.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
I was so excited that I got the opportunity to interview you because I was researching your story, and you started as a writer there, and now you own the company. So can you just tell us a little about that please? What is that journey?

Vanessa Coppes:
Oh my god. So it’s so funny that you start this way, because my claim to fame is I actually bought the magazine I used to work for, and that’s really it. When the magazine launched almost 11 years ago, I got it in my mailbox. I was super thrilled. I remember the first edition having Denise Richards on the cover. And at that time, I had just launched my custom jewelry business, and I had sent jewelry to Denise Richards. So talk about serendipity, talk about “godincidences,” like talk about things that are like supposed to happen.

Vanessa Coppes:
And I remember just reaching out to the previous owner, and I was like, Denise Richards was just on my cover. This is so exciting. And we just created… We had this connection where she was having events where I could support her with and vice versa. Then we became friends, and I started to contribute to the publication, and the rest is history.

Passion for Writing
Vanessa Coppes:
I was so passionate about writing. I mean, the writing aspect has just been second nature to me. I’ve been journaling since I was seven years old, had always envisioned myself writing for a publication since the age of 13. I could see it so clearly for myself. And when they decided to sell three years ago....

Bethany:
All right. Okay. So I always like to check in because I interview a lot of moms out there. I know you have three little ones and we’re still kind of like coming off this crazy time. How are you doing?

Catherine:
I’m doing okay. Thank you for asking. Things are really chaotic, but I just feel like the role of mom is so rewarding. It’s really challenging. It’s really hard, but it’s also so fulfilling. I just feel so blessed that I get to direct these children on a good path. And also just to set, hopefully, a good example for my kids. I like to do different things, like pursue things that I love. And so those things kind of keep me grounded and keep me remembering who I am too so that I can be a really good mom.

All-Star Moms

And that’s why I really love partnering with Mrs. T’s on their All-Star Moms program because it’s encouraging moms to go back to things that may be their passions and their interests. And so what they’re doing is giving away a grand prize of $15,000 on Monday to a mom so that they can fulfill their passion. So I love that about it. And I also just think that a woman who is well rounded, a mother who gets to do her own thing is just hot so…

Bethany:
Yeah, absolutely. I agree. I have two little boys and of course, as you said, they bring me a lot, a lot of joy, but I have to make time for the things that I love. And so I also want to know, what are your passions? Like, what are you, I mean, we follow you on Instagram. We see all these things, but like we kind, what gets you going like aside from motherhood and Sean and all of that stuff?

Feeling Empowered

Catherine:
Well, the thing that I love to feel empowered by is learning a new skill or learning something new. I remember a couple of years ago, Sean gave me a language program to learn Italian. And I didn’t really do as much with that because I think I just got pregnant, but now it’s piano. And I love, like I have concerts at my house like every day and our nanny and our kids and my husband always clap. So I feel very empowered...

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi, and welcome back to another episode of the Breakdown with Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva and today we are doubling down on the name of this show. That’s because my guest is Bethany Hollars. She’s the content director of BrickSeek and a money-saving expert. So, parents, you’re definitely going to want to listen to this one.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Bethany, thank you so much for joining us. Obviously, I love your name, but I’m also really interested in what you do. I mean money-saving tips for parents is something that I probably should focus more on if I’m being really honest, but tell us about BrickSeek and all your credibility there.

Bethany Hollars:
Absolutely. I’m so excited to meet you. We just got done talking about how we don’t know many people named Bethany. So it’s really cool to actually sit down with another Bethany. My name is Bethany Hollars. I’m the content director and also the head of media relations at BrickSeek.com. We’re an online shopping tool. We came into existence about 10 years ago. Our founder was actually a Lego freak, loved collecting Legos. It’s a huge community out there. If you know anyone who’s an avid Lego collector, they’re just great people. He was actually buying sets locally to him in stores like Target and Walmart and when a set was getting ready to be clearanced out, he’d try and find it so he could stock up on it before they’d stop making it.

Bethany Hollars:
But he was spending a lot of time and also money searching, running all around, trying to find these sets. He has some software development background. So he created himself a simple tool where he could put the UPC number of whatever that Lego set is that he was chasing into his tool that he created along with his zip code, and it would pull up the closest stores to him, big box retailers like Walmart and Target. And it would tell him here’s how many of those Lego sets are at each of these specific stores, and also here’s how much they cost at each of these specific stores....

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva and today my guest is Dr. Zee, Zabina Bhasin. She’s a diversity and inclusion expert, an entrepreneur, a physician and a mom of two. She created a company called In KidZ. It’s all about teaching our children about global citizenship and she’s going to talk to us about what it means to be a global citizen and how we can instill those values in our kids. So this is an episode you’re definitely not going to want to miss.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
You have such an impressive background. You’re a physician, an entrepreneur, and a mom. So, tell us about your background, how you got started and what you’re all about.

Diversity and Inclusive Toys
Dr. Zabina Bhasin:
So, my name is Dr. Zabina Bhasin. I am a non-practicing child psychiatrist now because I am an entrepreneur that started a company that I founded in March 2020, known as In KidZ. We are a diverse and inclusive toy company on a mission to educate everyone through play. We launched on the basis of teaching children three years and older about diversity, inclusion and belonging, as well as protecting one another and making sure we teach our children about other cultures through toys and play.

Dr. Zabina Bhasin:
Well, why I launched that was because of my kids and that’s where I’m a mom also. My kids were my priority, I stopped practicing and I was a hospital administrator and I decided I wanted to do something to really uplift my children and teach them not only about our culture and our traditions and our religion but about other cultures and traditions because I got bullied so much when I was growing up.

Teaching Diversity Through Play
Dr. Zabina Bhasin:
Look, I’m a born-and-raised American. I was born in Cerritos, California. I was raised in Cerritos, which is culturally a diverse town but I was still bullied for the color of my skin, for my nose, for my food, the way I dressed.....

Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva and today my guest is Gretchen Rossi, a former cast member of The Real Housewives of Orange County who’s also an entrepreneur and a loving mother. She’s also famously engaged to another cast member from The Real Housewives of Orange County, Slade Smiley. So we’re going to be talking about her not being married, living in sin, and keeping kids safe with an amazing life-saving device. You’re not going to want to miss it.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
So we were just saying like mom life, I actually have to run and pick up my kids. So we’re going to jump right in and your daughter, Skylar is about two and a half. She’s going to be three in July. So I just want to know how is that going? I mean, pandemic, toddler, all of it, what’s going on?

Gretchen Rossi:
So I love to say that it’s like that juxtaposition of it’s the most incredible thing ever that you will do, but it is literally the hardest thing you will ever do. It is. It’s all about maintaining a balance and good time management, which I still haven’t got down and it’s just so much harder than I think I thought it was ever going to be. I think I had this vision of everything’s just going to be rainbows and butterflies and I’m going to have this kid and it’s just going to be so much fun and then you wake up and your house is a disaster and you have no time for yourself or self-care and you have this little person that needs you 24/7 and you’re just like, ah.

Postpartum Depression
Bethany Braun-Silva:
I know. I mean, it’s a lot. It’s definitely a lot and actually, when I was preparing for this interview, I was researching about different interviews you’ve done and you talked to openly about postpartum depression and that may have even been a reason why you might not even be getting pregnant right away. So I want to know sort of what was that like in the beginning and how has it evolved till now, because one of my favorite things that I say a lot is that postpartum, that postpartum period is not six weeks. It’s not even six months. It’s like every… The time from you becoming a mother and beyond. My kids are six and 10 and I feel like I’m still in the postpartum period. So tell us a little bit about how it was then opposed to now almost three years later?...

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. Today is a really special episode because I got to interview one of my heroes. Joelle Garguilo is not only an Emmy award-winning producer and reporter, but she’s also probably the nicest gal you’ll ever meet. She and I dished on kids, on work, on everything, and it really was a life-changing moment for me. Because, as I mentioned before, she is the inspiration and the reason why I wanted to be on camera. I hope you enjoy the interview. It was really a thrill, and Joelle is just so much fun. So take a look.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
I feel like you are the best interviewer out there. And I’m not the only one that says it. I’ve heard Patrice Poltzer say it. You have such a skill, and I want to know, and I think people in my field and our field, they want to know what are you doing that makes you so good? Is it prep? Is it your personality? What is it?

Joelle Garguilo:
That is the greatest compliment that anybody could ever give me. I’m not kidding, that truly is, so I will say thank you. And I say that because I do work really hard at it, but I also think, and I’m not saying you’re starting out, I’m saying when somebody is starting out, you’re nervous, as one should be, because you care. I think everyone’s always like, “I want to get to a point where I’m not nervous”, but I think nerves are good because it means that you still actually care about what you’re doing. But I do remember when I was starting out and I just wanted to be a good interviewer. And I think somewhere along the way, it all just clicked...

Joelle Garguilo:
There’s no secret. I wish that there was a secret, but if I would have to dig into my process, I would say, I just, I care. I really care. I think that there was a time at the beginning of my career, and I think for a lot of people at the beginning of their career when you’re interviewing someone, you’re thinking more about yourself. You’re like, “Oh, how can I get that soundbite? Or how can I get this? And how can I get that?” And you’re not really listening to anything that the other person is saying, because you’re worried about yourself. But once you flip that switch and it becomes about whoever’s on the other side of the microphone, or whatever medium it is, I do think it all falls into place. And I think, not for nothing, can we curse on here? Is there cursing?

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Yeah, please. There are no rules. No rules.

Jen: Hi, people of Facebook. We’re live on Facebook. We’re getting Instagram going and we have a really fun guest today. It’s been a while since I’ve done MomCave LIVE in the morning. Um, there, there we are. Okay. So we are on Instagram and Facebook with Bonnie Bruderer from Binge Networks. Hey Bonnie.

Bonnie Bruderer: Hi. Hey guys.

Jen: Thanks for being up and awake and showered and makeup and everything at this point. Oh my God.

Bonnie Bruderer: I have been up for like 17 hours already, I have two babies.

Jen: And that’s exactly what I want to talk to you…. why I was so fascinated. And later Bonnie and I are going to make a big announcement later about MomCave.

Jen: And we’re going to talk about Bonnie’s business, but the most fascinating thing to me is not about business. It’s about when I heard that Bonnie had adopted two babies, newborn babies, since the pandemic and she’s running a business and she’s here talking to us. So you’re the super mama and we want to hear all about it.

Bonnie Bruderer: It was a very arduous, horrible, and very long process. Yeah. In total it took about eight years. Um, Obviously, that’s not what we’re here to talk about today. We can do a full show on that, but yes, a very, very long time. I have a whole other blog called disruptedmomma.com on that whole topic, so.

I want to know about disrupted mama. Um, yeah. Okay. And so. You, uh, nobody was prepared for the pandemic to hit. Right. Um, it surprised us all, but let’s just go back to like the day. Before we knew the crap was going to hit the fan as I call it at that point....

Welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown With Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva. And today my guest is Nadia Murdock, who’s a movement and mindset expert. She helps entrepreneurial moms prioritize themselves through movement and getting in the right mental space. And she’s also an entrepreneur herself. So this is one you’re not going to want to miss. Check it out. So I was looking on your website and you weren’t always into fitness and mindset. Right. This was sort of a pivot for you. So tell us a little bit about that.

Nadia Murdock:
Yeah. So I mean, it’s a while now, but when I went to college, I graduated with a BA in psychology and I thought I wanted to do forensic psychology. And then I got into the thick of it and I was like, oh, this is a little too much for me. So then I continued my journey doing odd-end jobs. And then I fell in love with communications and PR and that’s actually what I got my master’s in. And so then I worked in that, I worked in events, I worked in PR, fashion PR, event planning. And, but something kept bringing me back to fitness largely because I had my own hurdles that I was trying to overcome.

Nadia Murdock:
After college, I gained a considerable amount of weight that I just couldn’t seem to shake off and I was trying all these fad diets, the onion soup diet. I was miserable. I was depriving myself. And then I finally just said, okay, I’m going to join a gym. And I tried all the classes and I just found a love for it. I loved how it made me feel and it kind of stuck with me. So then I started freelancing for examiner.com. If you may remember that publication way back when, and I started reviewing fitness studios and taking classes and interviewing people like Billy Blanks and Jillian Michaels and all this-

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Wait the Tae Bo guy?

Nadia Murdock:
Yes.

I have his VHS tapes....

Bethany Braun-Silva :
So I first want to talk about this book, The Working Mom Blueprint. I have to say when I read the little, I mean, I don’t know the subtitle, Winning at Parenting Without Losing Yourself. I almost started tearing up and that’s where I guess I am right now in my parenting life. So can you talk to me a little bit about it? I mean, it’s your second book, but what was the inspiration behind it? What was the research, the writing process like and how has it been received so far?

Whitney Caseres:
Absolutely. So, yeah, it’s my second book. And the first book that I wrote was about how to take care of yourself in that first newborn period. Like how do you not completely lose it when you’re in the midst of sleeplessness and trying to feed a baby and all of that. And that really in pediatrics is a huge focus for us. We care so much about that newborn period, but then I realized as I started talking to other moms in my pediatrics practice, like what about all the time after that?

What about your entire working experience? If you’re a working mom or there are lots of moms that are at home that have unpaid work that they’re doing. Right. What about all those moms? And so after I had agreed with the American Academy of Pediatrics to write the first book, then they said, well, would you want to write a second book too?...

Hi, and welcome back to another episode of the Breakdown with Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva and if you are a Bravo fanatic like I am, you’re going to be so excited about my guest today. Dorit Kemsley is a loving mom of two, a busy entrepreneur, and of course, one of the stars of the hit show, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. She’s going to be talking to us today about her New Year’s resolutions and how she keeps her family connections strong all year long. You’re not going to want to miss this one, so keep watching to check it out.

Dorit Kemsley:
Hi Bethany.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Hi Dorit. Thank you so much for chatting with me today. I’m really excited.

Dorit Kemsley:
Me too Bethany. Thank you. Thank you for having me. I’m excited to be here.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Of course, and happy new year. I know it’s been a rough couple of years for us all, especially with us raising little ones, but we’re almost halfway through January and I’m wondering what are your New Year’s resolutions for 2022?

Dorit Kemsley:
My New Year’s resolutions this year, they’re easy. I am resolving to spend more time building connections with extended family all year long. Really the emphasis and the focus for me is family, family, family, which is not only an easy resolution, but it’s a warm and fuzzy one.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
Yeah. I love that. I think that really is such a great way to go into, start the new year off after what we’ve gone through the past few years. But so how do you plan on doing that? Because I know some of us are still facing some challenges with seeing family in person or whether you have family that lives on separate coasts or in another country. So how can extended family stay connected in 2022?

Dorit Kemsley:
So, my parents live out of state. They live on the East Coast. I just recently purchased this amazing device, Amazon Glow, which it’s an interactive projector and video calling device. And it allows kids to play games, read, draw, and they’ve been able to connect and play with my parents who are out of state. And they’re having a blast. Even though my parents are miles apart, they feel like they’re in the same room playing together.

Bethany Braun-Silva:
And that’s kind of nice. Do you feel like it gives you a little break too? Even though your parents aren’t there in person, sort of your kids are under the watchful eye of their grandparents. Maybe you can go and take a shower or do something for your

Hey, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. Today’s guest is not only an awesome mother of two little girls, a writer, editor, and social media wiz, but she’s also my friend. I met Aliza Friedlander on Clubhouse and we instantly hit it off. We were both writers and editors in the parenting space, and we have a lot to say on working motherhood, raising kids, and everything and anything in between. You might even recognize Aliza after the first story she tells about a post that went viral years ago. I was so surprised to find out that this was her family. And honestly, I still am laughing about it. So if you love the interview, be sure to like and subscribe. And I can’t wait to bring you guys more great parenting content. Check it out.

Bethany:
Aliza, thank you so much for joining me. I’m thrilled you’re here because we’re friends. So we met on social media, but people actually might know you. And I was surprised to find this out too, even though we’ve known each other for a few months. Can you tell us all about how you went viral?

Aliza Friendlander:
Oh my God. Yes. So it is, I swear, the gift that’s still giving. My daughter is now five and a half. This happened when she was three. So I was a stay-at-home mom for many, many years. Before I had kids, I was a TV producer and I transitioned out of that, got a Master’s in emerging media, had kids, stayed home. And then probably two years into my stay-at-home mom journey, felt like I wanted a little something more for myself. So I got into some writing for a very hyper-local magazine here in the Maryland area, and freelanced there for a while and then ended up getting brought on part-time as a senior..

Hi, and welcome back to another episode of The Breakdown with Bethany. I’m Bethany Braun-Silva, and today is a really special show. It’s our Christmas episode, and we’re going to be chatting with Christina Milian, actress, singer, supermom of three. There is nothing that this woman can’t do. So we’re going to be finding out some of Christina’s favorite holiday traditions and what she has coming up next in the music and movie department, so you’re not going to want to miss it.

Bethany:
Hi, Christina, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me. I was actually on your Instagram just last night, and today you’re in France. Is that right?

Christina Milian:
Yes, I am. Yeah, yeah. I’ve here for a couple of months, actually. My husband is working on something here, so we decided to come over here for a little while, while he’s working, and of course, had just had a baby. So it was just worked out perfect so we could be together. And it’s not bad. I mean, France is pretty cool.

Bethany:
Your stories last night, it was magical. I mean, it really [inaudible 00:00:58].

Christina:
Tell me about it. I’m like, it’s so unreal. It really started snowing. It was beautiful.

Bethany:
And I loved your pants, but let’s move on.

Christina:
Thank you.

Bethany:
Are you going to be spending the holidays there?

Christina:
No. Well, I mean, technically through this beginning of December, but actually, by the end of the month and for actual Christmas, we’re going to be in Los Angeles.

Bethany:
Okay, great. And actually, we’re filming today, November 30th, on Giving Tuesday. And I know that you have partnered with Crest and Oral-B for a really, really important campaign that I think it actually is really important, and, I’m sorry, pertinent given to what today is. So tell us a little bit about that.

Closing the Smile Gap

Christina Milian:
Well, Crest and Oral-B are helping to close the smile gap, and I’m partnering with them because this is such important information we kind of take for granted. But now that I’m a parent, I’m like, oh wow, this is really important. I want to pass on good oral health habits to my children. Growing up, my parents, they were both of . .......

Bethany: Hi, Mindy, thanks so much for chatting with me.

Mindy Kaling: Hey, Bethany. How’s it going?

Bethany: Good, good. I want to jump right in. And I’m wondering just what healthy habits you have or how do you make time for healthy habits? And that’s really both physically and mentally.

Mindy Kaling: Well, I think it’s, as you said, it is challenging, and for me, my entire life was uprooted and changed about a little less than a year ago with everyone else where I.. Now I work from home, I have two jobs and I take care of both of my kids at home and so for me,

So much of my life was being on sets and now I have to do everything from home. And my biggest change has been a journey of just a kind of self-care and trying to live well. And for instance, I have had to be like a chef at home for my kids, which is the first time I’ve ever done so, really mastering easy recipes. I was so excited to partner with Campbell’s and Well Yes, because… I’m actually like literally drinking it right now. It’s just an incredibly convenient, delicious way to get veggies packed into my kid’s meals. And so and so again, like that, I have had to learn all these different skills that I were never required of me before, like being a personal chef to two children and myself. And, you know, and but I’ve been working at it, and this year I feel really good. Like, I think that coming into 2021, I tried not to make any super tough resolutions this year...

Jen: I’m Jen and I’m here with Renee from The Mom Room, one of the greatest mom podcasts ever. Hey, Renee!

Renee Reina: Hi, how’s it going?

Jen: Oh, it’s gone pretty well, considering I forgot a pediatrician appointment this morning and I wanted to be here with you, so I was like rush rush rush rush! And now I’m here, and we can just have fun and talk.

Renee Reina: Yes, exactly.

Unlikely Covid Shortages… Pumpkins??

Jen: What are you up to today?

Renee Reina: My in-laws are coming in this evening from Vancouver, so they’re going to be here for Halloween fun. I need to go find some pumpkins after this. I think my husband was saying that a lot of the places look like they’re selling out of pumpkins, so I’m going to be on a pumpkin mission.

Jen: Are the pumpkins going to be one of those things that we’re having a low supply of because of COVID? Is COVID affecting pumpkins?

Renee Reina: You know what? That’s a good question. I don’t know. Maybe we’re late buying them. But maybe there is a shortage.

Jen: We just blame COVID for everything. This was the first year I grew pumpkins and I have to tell you, it’s very satisfying. Pumpkins grow fast. And they grow huge. And it’s very magical to have pumpkins just outside your window. So next year, I’m going to plan a whole patch of pumpkins.

Renee Reina: That’s awesome.

Jen: I will give you a free pumpkin. Yes. Somebody was saying on Instagram, they’ve heard pumpkins are in short supply.

Renee Reina: Oh, wow. Interesting.

We have lots of small ones. I buy them because I see them at the grocery store and I feel like we need them. And Milo’s been painting them, but the larger ones are harder to find.

Jen: Okay, well, we may have a new business. Someone said it’s all the photographers buying them...

The #momlife can be stressful, but today we’re bringing the laughs with comedienne Zarna Garg. Listen as we talk (and laugh!) about screen time, dating kids, and (yes, we go there, mothers-in-law.)

Jen: Welcome to Mom Cave Live where we may have lost our minds, but we haven’t lost our senses of humor. I’m Jen and my guest this week is Zarna Garg.

I’m so excited to talk to you, Zarna. Hey!

Zarna Garg: Thank you so much. I’m so excited to be here. And I’m so happy that I’m not the only one struggling til the last minute. And why don’t Facebook and Instagram work together? What is the deal there?

Jen: Who knows? And I don’t have time to figure that out. And, like five seconds before we’re supposed to go live, my husband’s upstairs working on his computer. It won’t turn on. So he’s like, “Help!” And then my son is home sick from school and he wants to log into Amazon Prime to watch a TV show and he can’t log in. And we’re doing like… the enter the codes and all. Finally, I was like, “You know what, you guys, I got to go talk to Zarna. When I’m done, I’ll deal with you!” This has a time. We made a time.

Zarna Garg: So this you know what? And haven’t we learned that if we don’t say I have to go, their needs will never end? They’re like my mother-in-law. There’s something new every minute.

Jen: Totally. That’s what I’ve learned. So. I want to introduce you and give you a proper introduction, but it’s so hard because you make me feel like an underachiever with all the things. So let me give it a try, okay

OK, so Zarna was originally a lawyer. And she is an Indian immigrant to the United States with three children.

Zarna Garg: Yes, that’s right.

Jen: Children, ex-lawyer. And then you became a standup comedian and an award-winning screenwriter.

Zarna Garg: Yes and yes. That’s all right.

Jen: Those are all the things…

Zarna Garg: That’s the face of desperation, that that’s not an achievement. That’s like when you’re so desperate to get something done. That’s what that looks like.

Jen: Right. You try all the things. I understand.

Zarna Garg: And I don’t highlight my failures on Instagram. Maybe I should so people know how much I failed before they can read this little list.

Jen: Hi, this is Jen and this is Mom Cave Live, where we may have lost our minds, but we haven’t lost our sense of humor. I am Jen and I’m here with our special guest this week, Alison Jacobson from First Candle.org who is discussing Infant Loss as well as Safe Sleep Awareness Month.

It’s going to be a little more serious of an episode, though. Of course, you know, we can’t help but make jokes all the time about everything.

Infant Loss Awareness Month
But it’s because this is Infant Loss Awareness Month. So we’re going to talk to Alison a bit about that. Hi, Alison.

Alison Jacobson: Hi. Thanks so much for having me.

Jen: Thank you for being here. It’s such a really, really important topic that a lot of us don’t know as much about as we should or think we do. So I’m grateful for you being here.

Alison Jacobson: Thank you.

Jen: Can you tell us first, what is First Candle.org? How did it come about and where can they find it?

Alison Jacobson: So First Candle is a 40-year-old organization that’s been around – a nonprofit organization. We are national. We used to be known as the SIDS Alliance. And we have been involved in SIDS and Safe Sleep forever. In fact, we were instrumental in getting all the messages out about “Back to Sleep.”

And because of that, the rates of SIDS declined by 50 percent. But then all of a sudden they stopped. And about 10 years ago, they leveled out. So we started looking at the government level and pediatricians about what was happening.

And it was more than just “Back to Sleep.” The reality was that a lot of these incidents were sleep-related infant deaths with accidental suffocation. Now, the reality is that’s bad news, but it’s good news, because with SIDS, you didn’t know how to prevent it or how to to do anything.

Jen: It was very mysterious.

Safe Sleep
Alison Jacobson: Right! Exactly. It was this great mystery and scary as heck! With accidental suffocation, there are absolutely things we can do to help prevent it. What I wanted to point out is that it is Infant Loss Awareness Month, but it’s Safe Sleep Awareness Month as well.

And, you know, I’m not trying to make it more positive, but there are things we absolutely can do. Moms, grandmas, everybody needs to know there are simple things we can do to keep our babies safe.

Alison Jacobson: Right.

Jen: So why is it that babies should be on their backs?

Does the sugar-rush of post Trick or Treating scare you more than ghosts? How do you celebrate Halloween with a diabetic child? Jen: Welcome to MomCave Live where we may have lost our minds, but we have not lost our sense of humor. I’m Jen and my guest today is Bethany Braun Silva. Hi, Bethany.

Bethany Braun Silva: Hi. How’s it going?

Jen: Great. I want to give you an intro, but it’s so hard to say she’s been on all the places because she is a parenting and lifestyle expert editor. So Bethany has worked for Parenting.com, Big Apple Parent, and What to Expect. And so she is here to help us with one of the big questions every parent has around Halloween, which is how can we make it not be about just candy?

Bethany Braun Silva: You know, it’s so funny. Like I even after 10 years of being in this industry, I still kind of cringe when I hear the word expert and my parenting expert, parenting plus expert. It always seems like an oxymoron to me.

Jen: It is. I mean, maybe I’m an expert on the digital media side, but with my own kids, no, I don’t consider myself an expert. And this is something I’m definitely a work in progress, especially around this holiday time struggle with Halloween candy.

Bethany Braun Silva: So this is something that I’m like actively, proactively dealing with myself. And I have a few tips that have worked with me, some I’ve learned from my mom friends, some non-candy Halloween treat ideas and activities… things like that. And really the first one that I want to talk about is this idea of the Switch Witch.

Jen: Right, so OK.

Bethany Braun Silva:: And people sometimes call it the Halloween fairy. There are different names. You can Google it-

Jen: I guess for some kids, witch is just too scary. We’ll make it a “fairy.”

Bethany Braun Silva: So this is really a way to kind of incentivize your kids. And I learned this from a neighbor of mine, and I have to tell her that I gave her props right here. So essentially what you do is… You don’t have to NOT go trick or treating. You can still have fun, trick or treating.

You can get all the candy. I know for me it was like a big deal counting. My kids have to count it and tally up all the pieces. Right. So you don’t have to eliminate that because that is really fun.

Tara Clark: I love Jen. Thank you for having me. This is really exciting.

Jen: I’m excited to have you too, and we’re also live over on Instagram, which is like our behind-the-scenes cam. For those of you that don’t know who Tara Clark IS, she’s… she’s so many things. So let’s see, she’s like an icon of the parenting, humor genre. She’s written for all the places. Tara wrote a book called Modern Mom Probs: A Survival Guide for 21st Century Mothers.

She’s a spokesperson for The Blue Dot Project, which we may talk about in a little bit. And she just started a subscription fashion style box. It’s called the Modern Mom Style Box. Great. So many things, first of all, how do you do so many things?

Tara Clark: I don’t know. And you know, it’s funny, like.. Thank you for that introduction, because that was an incredible introduction. And uh, I don’t know actually how I do all the things. I’m also the PTA president at my son’s school and I don’t know how or why I do all, I don’t know.

Jen: I just accepted to be, not the PTA president, just the class parent rep for the second year in a row. And I was kind of like, “Oh, I’ll do it if no one else will step up….” Reluctantly.

Tara Clark: And that’s actually how I did it. At least in my case, becoming PTA president is no one else wants to do it. So I was like, “I’ll do it. I’m serve as Tribute.” That’s always my thing. Like that’s my, I think just in life, I think that’s always just how things happen to me. I just do it. Everyone else takes a step back and I’m that one person standing up front and I’m like, “Yeah. Okay. I’ll do it. Sure.”

Jen: I’m Jen from MomCave. And this is MomCave Live where we may have lost our minds, but not our senses of humor.

I’m live with my buddy Tova Leigh, who is with us all the way from the UK. And if you don’t know who Tova is, you’re gonna wanna go and check out her page right after this, because it’s, she’s “Tova Leigh My Thoughts About Stuff” on Facebook, which kinda started as you know, your funny mom page and it went viral, but now it’s so much more.

You talk about all the things, Tova. Sex, marriage, life, friends, ladies, body image, women’s rights. I can’t even name them all. So, hi, thanks for being here to talk with me.

Tova Leigh: Thank you so much for having me. I was just saying it’s been so long actually since I’ve seen you, since we’ve spoken. I was so happy when you messaged me, and really grateful actually that you, wanted to have me on your live. So thank you.

Jen: You’re very welcome.

So, Tova’s first book was “F*C-K-E-D at 40.” And it’s a wonderful thing to celebrate the fact that you are over 40, as am I, and we’re just gonna admit it and like own it and live with it.

Tova Leigh: Oh God! I love being in my 40s. I honestly do. It’s so far been my favorite decade. Like it’s the, yeah, it’s the “F it Decade.”

Jen: Yeah, because if it does matter, then F it, why like waste energy, time, thought?

Tova Leigh: Exactly. I feel like the fact that I’m running out of time.

Jen: I know that’s the worst. Like the person who’s always like death is near. I don’t have time for it.

Tova Leigh: Oh, yeah exactly. It’s getting near. And some people might see that as something quite morbid and depressing, but I find it motivates me, really. Thoughts about death motivate me.

Jen: I love it. See, you can have dark thoughts and laugh about them .

Tova Leigh: I just think that listen, soon, I’ll be able to really say more past than future and I need to get on with things. I’m not gonna waste my time on through, you know things, that don’t matter. So yeah.

Read the full blog with video and transcript here: https://www.momcavetv.com/holy-hot-mess-mary-katherine-backstrom-on-why-exposing-our-mess-is-a-essential/

Mary Katherine Backstrom shares heartbreaking and hilarious stories of how God uses each "mess" in our lives to bring us closer to Him. She shows us that it's okay to celebrate exactly where we are right now—holy, hot mess and all.

A lot of people struggle with the concept of being holy. But the fact is, even the hottest of messes are being shaped—right now—into Jesus' likeness. In this book, Mary Katherine shares the sometimes-hidden evidence of God's work in her life and shows you that it's okay to embrace the hot messes.

Mary Katherine will share both hilarious and vulnerable stories about faith, friendships, motherhood, marriage, and depression. She will cover the topics that plague our hearts every day with raw, honest truth and a side of laughter. Mary Katherine invites you into her story as a friend, encouraging you to embrace the hot messes in your life. Because we are all a work in progress, and as long as we are alive, we are under construction—and construction sites tend to be messy.

From the Foreword by Kristina Kusmic, author of Hold On, But Don't Hold Still

"MK’s vulnerability, her unique perspective, and her beautiful way with words will help you feel seen, and help your own mess feel a little bit more manageable. In a world that constantly pushes you toward chasing perfection (unattainable), MK will encourage you to embrace the mess (trust me, definitely attainable!).

And, the best part? You’ll feel like you’re having a meal with an old friend who understands, who won’t judge you, who’s been there and who can hold your hand through it. Maybe even finish the evening in a bathroom stall, taking selfies. Just don’t hurt your face."

What if you skipped diapers altogether? According to Andrea Olson of GoDiaperFree.com, you can teach your child to use the potty from BIRTH! A very skeptical Jen interviews Andrea all about "elimination communication" and potty training.

Elimination Communication is a gentle, non-coercive way to respond to a baby’s natural hygiene needs, from as early as birth. Like all mammals, human babies instinctually resist soiling themselves, their sleep space, and their caregivers, and they clearly communicate about it from birth. With EC, we learn baby's signals and natural rhythms and assist them with this process until they naturally gain independence (usually by 9-18 months of age).

Another way to think about it: What did humans do before diapers? And what do humans do in regions where diapers are not commercially available?

Transcript on Deva's Interview (but it's more fun to watch!)

  • Hey. Welcome to MomCave. This is gonna be a new impromptu situation I'm going to try out once a week called "Ask a Mom." And for the very first Ask a Mom I asked one of the original YouTube moms, from MyLifeSuckers. This is Deva. Wait, that's the wrong way. There's Deva.

  • Hi. Original is code for "old." Well basically. Yeah. We watched Cocoon the other night and then my husband's like "how long 'til we are like those people?" I was like, "Six months, about."

  • At this rate. With the pandemic.

  • Yeah.

  • Two weeks.

  • I'll answer anything.

  • Anything? Wow, you're

  • My kids says. That was my dream from the second I can remember even having you know, cognitive thoughts. I wanted to be an actress. I starred as Little Red Riding Hood on the stage in Kindergarten and that was it.

  • Your debut.

  • My debut.

  • Yeah. Um okay. And so then, you sort of you know that they always use that word in like the business books, of "pivot." Like you pivoted. You pivoted by like using that and adding the momness to it. And you pivoted into something else.

  • Yeah. Well I tried the whole traditional Hollywood thing. I moved to LA after college and beat my head against the wall and all I heard was the word "no no no no." And then finally I you know, cheesy as it sounds, YouTube let me say yes to myself and I got to just start creating my own things and no one could say no to me and it was amazing.

  • Yeah that's so cool. Um was the first video that you made the "what does the kid say?" Or.

  • That was my first video. Yeah. It went viral. Which was insane. I wasn't trying to be a YouTube mom. There were no YouTube moms when I made my first video. It wasn't.

  • That was one of my questions. Like did you know that was a thing, were you following other YouTube moms and trying to be one?

  • There were none. There were no other YouTube Moms.

  • Oh wow.

  • I'm the original. Yeah. So no. I wasn't following. There were YouTubers.

  • But they weren't moms. Yeah. They were like young dainty boys.

  • Way too cool. For me to know about.

  • Way cooler than moms.

  • I didn't even know you could get YouTube subscribers until a year and a half into making videos.

  • Oh all those missed opportunities. Darn. Angel is saying the OG. Yeah, she's the OG. If you guys have any questions for Deva pop them in the comments. Okay so. You make this viral video. Let me just step back one moment. What? What made you think this was a good idea? Why? What was the idea? How did this come about?

  • Well I wasn't intending for anyone to see it. I made a video. Well, dialing way back. Wanted to be an actress. Failed miserably. Had children. Got a job writing for Nickelodeon for their parenting website where I wrote funny articles about you know getting snot out of babies' noses.
