Episode 62 of eCommerce Uncensored is a Q & A session. Paul gets Kevin and Jason’s take on some questions related to eCommerce. As great as Paul is at finding the questions, if you have a question you’d like answered or just a topic you want the guys to discuss, just shoot them an email or message them on instagram @ecommerceuncensored.

Question #1: What are the best types of content upgrades?

Answer: Content upgrades are important for engaging your audience and as lead magnets. Depending on the audience things like videos, eBooks, guides, checklists will all work. Don’t be too complicated. You can even repurpose content you’ve already used on your blog or Facebook and create a pdf using that. It doesn’t need to be perfect at first either. You can create the pdf and once you see that people are engaging with it and downloading it, then you can take the time to clean it up.

One thing to consider is an idea taken from Matt Furey. He says that your content should intrigue your audience, but don’t give them all of the value there. Leave them wanting more, so they are eager to download the rest of the information with your content upgrade or lead magnet.

Question #2: How effective are ‘exit-intent’ popups?

Answer: Exit-intent popups can be effective and are good to have, but probably not your most effective popup tool. For starters, they don’t work on mobile. On your computer, your mouse detects where you’re going to click, so it triggers the exit-intent popup. Your phone can’t do that, so half of your audience isn’t even going to see the popup because they are browsing from their phones.

With all the different types of popups you can try, really the most important thing is to engage the audience with the content of the popup. You’re likely to get a conversion when you present the audience with value.

Question #3: What can the listeners of this podcast do to collaborate with eCommerce Uncensored or just get in touch?

Answer: We love hearing from our listeners. It’s cool because when we get inquiries from listeners we can, in a lot of ways, skip over the introductory steps of explaining who we are, what we do, and how, because our listeners know us to some extent.

That’s why we offer you a free 30 minute phone conference when you download of 5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through & Ultimately More Sales. It gives us a great way to interact with you guys, hear what you’re up to and give us ideas of things we should be doing too.

In episode 61 of eCommerce Uncensored Jason and Kevin discuss the recent changes to the Facebook algorithm and why, as long as you’re doing things right, there is no reason for you to panic about it.

Facebook has announced that they will be switching things up in order to increase how many friends posts you see and decrease the number of business posts. A few years ago when Facebook changed the algorithm so that only 3% of the audience would atually see your posts-no one seemed to freak out as much. This time around, maybe because the news came as an ‘official’ announcement, there seems to be widespread concern.

So, should you really be worried? NO! As mentioned countless times in the podcast, your email list is your greatest asset. It is something you own and control. So if you are doing things right and using Facebook as a means to capture email addresses, then this change to the algorithm isn’t going to matter to you.

You should not be putting yourself in a position where you are relying on someone else’s platform. You don’t want to be building Facebook’s equity, but building your own brand, and Facebook should be used as a tool for this. You should be using Facebook as a way to pump out content and engage with your audience. The end game should be to get a lead, capture an email, or drive traffic back to your site-that way you are in control. If you have content that the audience really wants and engages with, Facebook’s algorithm isn’t going to affect its organic growth.

Bottom line is, it is all ever changing. Build your own equity with an email list so that you are not overly invested in something that you don’t actually control.

Don’t forget to please leave a comment below or review us on iTunes or Stitcher.

In Episode 60 of eCommerce Uncensored Kevin and Jason give you an outline of key components that they see in every successful email marketing campaign. Use this outline to determine where you can improve how you are tackling emailing your customers.

#1 Health of your email list.

This is a case where quality is more important than quantity. It doesn’t really matter how many thousands of email addresses you have, if those customers aren’t engaged with your products or if those email addresses aren’t even valid, the quantity of email addresses doesn’t matter.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  • Where did your list come from? How valid is it?
  • Are the people on your list engaged with your brand? Are they interested?
  • Have they purchased from you before, because that’s a much easier sell?
  • Are they expecting to see an email from you? If not you need to warm them up and get them used to seeing your emails.

Don’t be afraid to whittle down your list. If you are emailing the right customers you will reach more engaged people, have higher open rates and see better sales.

#2 Have multiple, complementary products to offer to customers.

It’s important to have products that can coexist. Meaning, if they buy one thing, they’re going to want this other one to go with it. That makes for an easy upsell and an excuse to reach out to your customers again. Keep the product types consistent – someone who bought makeup from you isn’t going to want to see a discount offer for a football next. Also consider how quickly your product is consumed. You don’t want to fatigue your list by sending the same product/offer repeatedly while the customers haven’t used up your product yet.

#3 Make sure your offer is attractive.

Sure, offering a discount code cuts into your bottom line, but your goal is to gain a sale and customer. That’s not going to happen if the customer perceives your offer as weak. Present an offer that will entice the customer and get them to pull out their credit cards. Even if they don’t use the offer at the time it is presented, if the offer is attractive enough they will be more willing to remain on your list and be engaged for the next offer they see down the line.

Compare your business and email marketing campaign with these components. How do they measure up? Where can you improve?

Episode 59 of eCommerce Uncensored is a Q & A session. Paul, Kevin and Jason are still not back in the regular studio post flooding and construction, but they are in the conference room with real mics and no background music, so getting closer to normal.

Question #1: How do B2B (Business to Business) vs. B2C (Business to Customer) strategies differ?

Answer: It’s really not all that different, because at the end of the day, you are still selling to a person. However, marketing B2B is more expensive simply because you are marketing to a smaller audience. So while the the ticket price of the B2B sale may be higher, so is the cost of customer acquisition. You’ll also find that the B2B sales process takes longer, usually because there is a chain of command that needs to approve the process. You don’t get the instant gratification in a B2B as you may see in a B2C.

Question #2: How do you integrate a podcast with your eCommerce business and what do you want to accomplish with it?

Answer: A podcast is a great tool to get your name, brand, information and product out there. A podcast helps people get to know you, what you do and build your credibility. The clients that we get from the podcast require a lot less ‘convincing’ because as listeners they already have an understanding of the process and what we do.

A podcast is another tool to pump content out, as you would with your blog or video posts. It’s a fairly inexpensive way to get your message out there and provide value to your audience. If you can get people to know and trust you, selling to them becomes much easier. So don’t constantly push your product. Instead, engage your audience with your story and stay consistent.

Question #3: How does storytelling play a role in marketing?

Answer: Check out Ben Settle. He writes a lot about how people don’t remember techniques, but they do remember stories. Engage your audience in your personal experience. Tell people why you created a product, your history, your struggles. When people get a peek into your life, they let their guard down and begin to trust you. Separate yourself from everyone else who is forcefully selling and just tell your story.

Episode 58 of eCommerce Uncensored was recorded on the road, at a restaurant, during a “power lunch” due to a burst pipe in the building which houses the studio. That is the explanation for the unusual audio and background music for this episode. Work is underway to get things back to normal, but in the meantime, in Episode 58 Kevin, Jason and Paul talk about the benefits of selling your product on existing marketplaces like Amazon and EBay when starting out.

Why you should validate your product on an existing marketplace…

As said many times before, it is really important to know if your product is going to sell before you invest a ton of time and money into things like inventory and marketing. A huge piece of starting any eCommerce business is asking yourself, “do people want my product?”. Selling on an existing marketplace will answer this question. If you are successful, your job becomes to figure out the best processes to sell your product, so it becomes a matter of how rather than if.

Amazon and EBay already have a massive customer base so you are not spending the time and money searching for an audience. If you can successfully sell your product on these platforms you’re likely to experience success when you venture out on your own.

While validating your product on existing platforms is valuable, there are many reasons why you do NOT want to build your business on someone else’s platform…

  • Large marketplace platforms like Amazon, EBay, Etsy, etc charge fees for selling your product, so you either need to take a hit to your bottom line, or raise your prices to compensate.
  • You are not in control-at any point the ‘big guy’ can come in and shut you down or change an algorithm that completely changes your visibility and sales.
  • They can take you over-Amazon has more than enough money to do anything that you are doing. If your product is selling like crazy, there is nothing stopping Amazon from manufacturing their own version of your product and taking you over.
  • You cannot build a customer base. You are not growing your email list so you cannot resell to existing customers or even retarget them. Using these existing marketplaces takes away your ability to scale your business. You can’t upsell, communicate with your customers, email market, etc.

When testing your product out in an existing marketplace choose the right platform. Our very own Paul Chew makes handmade custom skateboard decks that are very cool, and uses Etsy as a platform to sell them. Check him out on Etsy at PostFourStudios and follow him on Instagram at Post Four Studios.

In Episode 57 of eCommerce Uncensored Kevin and Jason give you three things you can do right now to increase your eCommerce sales immediately. Not only is this a great way for you to get a jumpstart on your business New Years resolutions, these are three steps that the team uses for every new client who walks through the “door”.

#1 Create a Pop-Up on your site offering a discount code in exchange for an email address.

This is the simplest way to grow your email list. The guys prefer to use the MailMunch plugin as it integrates easily with both Shopify and WooCommerce sites. MailMunch is free to start and allows you to customize your pop up with different offers and presentations (timed popup, scrolling popup, etc). Important tip…The wording on the popup should imply that you will be sending the discount code to the email address provided. This will ensure your likelihood of getting a real email address. BUT…once the email address is provided, the shopper should be redirected to a “Thank You” page that gives them the offer code anyway. You’ll want to do this so that the shopper has the option of going through with the sale right away and decrease the chances of them getting distracted with something else.

#2 Create an automated email with the discount code-as promised in the popup.

This follow up email should include the discount code and a link back to your store to complete the order and use the discount. Using MailChimp is a great way to automate your emails and it integrates seamlessly with MailMunch – so it will automatically send out emails to new addresses collected through MailMunch.

#3 Set up a Facebook PIXEL to start collecting data on your traffic.

You’re going to need existing site traffic for this one but…set up your Facebook Pixel, attach it to your webpage, and create a re-target ad on Facebook or Instagram to reach out to the audience who visited your site. You can even retarget the people with a discount code in order to push the sale.

In Episode 56 of eCommerce Uncensored Kevin, Jason, and Paul reflect on 2017 and make some resolutions for 2018.

Overall 2017 was a very exciting year for eCommerce Uncensored. The guys experienced steady growth and gained new clients through the podcast audience. These new clients were already familiar with the team because they are listeners, so there was less need to sell themselves and what they do. The podcast is also valuable to new clients who come in from other places, because it can be used as a place to direct these new clients to ‘get to know us and what we do’. New clients are a great way for the guys to try new things this coming year and chat about in future podcasts.

Things learned in 2017:

  • You can’t help everyone who walks through the door – you need to be sure the client is a good fit.
  • Some items just won’t sell, no matter how many different strategies or angles you try, sometimes it just won’t work.
  • Managing client expectations from the onset is really important. Clients need to understand that they have to be patient and chances are they’re not going to become millionaires overnight.

Plans for 2018…

  • Looking to restart the eCommerce store and get back in the trenches with the audience.
  • Get more active on social media. Look for the guys doing live videos on Instagram and Facebook. Also follow their Instagram stories (ecommerceuncensored).
  • Deliver more podcast content consistently, not matter how busy it gets here.

In Episode 55 of eCommerce Uncensored Kevin, Jason, and Paul go over the results their clients had during Black Friday/Cyber Monday week, and how implementing the “5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through, and Ultimately More Sales” proved effective once again.

Some Background…

A lot of the clients that the guys put campaigns together for are new to the eCommerce world and email campaigns. Some brands are more brick & mortar focused, others are more catalog/call-in based, but the results they got were impressive. The campaign was set up to run 11/20-11/27, so the Monday before Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday.

How the “5 Keys” were used in the campaigns…

KEY #1 FREQUENCY: The campaign comprised of 7 emails with the following concepts:

  1. Black Friday WEEK “starts now” (Monday)
  2. Reminder email 2 days later (Wednesday)
  3. Black Friday starts now (Friday)
  4. Black Friday ending now (Friday)
  5. Cyber Monday starting now (Monday)
  6. Cyber Monday ending now (Monday)
  7. Sale extended (sent in some cases on Tuesday)

While it may seem like a lot, frequency is very important here. You are running a promotion for a limited time. Not everyone on your list is going to see every email you send so as frequency increases so does the number of people seeing your emails. Customers on client lists were then segmented and re-targeted based on how they interacted with the email (open vs not, click through vs not, etc).

KEY #2 SUBJECT LINE: Under normal circumstances you don’t want to give away too much information about the offer specifics in the subject line (because you want the customer to open the email). However, due to the fact that it was Black Friday/Cyber Monday Week people are expecting some sort of offer in their inbox. While initial emails went out with more general subject lines like, “Black Friday Deals Start Now”, follow up emails, especially for those who didn’t open the initial ones had specific saving offers like, “40% OFF NOW”, right in the subject line.

KEY #3 CONGRUENCY OF THE EMAIL BODY: If the body of the email doesn’t match the expectations of the offer you put in the subject line, you can get yourself in a lot of trouble and really annoy some eager shoppers. Don’t offer one thing in the subject line and actually present something different or convoluted in the email.

KEY #4 CALL TO ACTION: Every email you send, especially when running a Black Friday/Cyber Monday campaign needs to have a call to action. Do NOT overlook a link or a big obnoxious button within the email that makes placing the order easy and simple. The longer someone has to think about it, the more likely you’ll lose the sale.

KEY #5 SCARCITY: Your campaign needs an ending date. Use that as an excuse to email your customers to remind them that time is running out. “Offer Ends Soon”, “Offer Ends Today”, “Offer Ends Tonight” are all ways to create scarcity and makes people take action because they don’t want to miss out.

What we learned…

If you follow the 5 Keys and present a strong offer, people will take it.

Some examples of Black Friday/Cyber Monday successes:

  • ‘Baby Guy’ went from $8,000 per month sales to $25,000 that WEEK
  • B to B company that previously took most orders by phone made $22,000 in sales that WEEK
  • Record number of sales transactions for numerous other clients

All in 7 days, and all using the 5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through, and Ultimately More Sales.

Episode 54 of eCommerce Uncensored is a Q & A session. Paul gets Kevin and Jason’s take on some questions related to eCommerce, focusing on the holiday sales campaigns coming up.

Question #1: How many email variations should I create and send out for Black Friday/Cyber Monday offer?

Answer: Let’s start by recognizing that Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales are not just one day long. Plan on at least a week long promotion.

There is no set formula for the number of email variations you should send, but you’ll always want to:

  • Start with a kickoff email-create a sense of urgency
  • Send an email right before the sale ends
  • Fill in the gaps, coming up with as many excuses to email your list. Definitely send emails on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and as the final days of the promotion take place. You’ll be sending the same offer, but with different subject lines and creative.
  • Use the 5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through, and Ultimately More Sales.

Question #2: Between social media and email, which strategy tends to be more effective during the holiday season?

Answer: Nothing is going to have a better ROI and higher conversion than email. You are emailing people who are already familiar with your brand so you’re already at an advantage. We will certainly be running all of our holiday campaigns through both email and social media, but anticipate a greater response from email.

Question #3: If my product is not selling, should I move onto a different product or focus on a pain point or issue my product solves?

Answer: If your product is not selling there are two possibilities…maybe you just haven’t nailed down the messaging that gets your product across to the right customer base OR maybe people really just aren’t interested in it.

If your product isn’t selling don’t give up after the first failure. Give yourself some time to test different strategies, platforms, or demographics. You may see you’re getting initial traffic but not conversions, so that’ll show you interest exists. Try running a free plus shipping offer. If you can’t give it away for free, its very unlikely that it will sell down the line. Don’t try to force it and spend a fortune on something that isn’t working, but do give yourself some time before moving on.

In Episode 53 Kevin Monell and Jason Caruso of eCommerce Uncensored discuss a case study of another client of theirs who experienced a successful email campaign implementing the 5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through, and Ultimately More Sales.

Doing another case study episode was the choice this time around based on the feedback and response to Episode 49 and the email campaign outlined there.

As mentioned before, Facebook marketing is great with its reach and specific targeting, but if you’re not getting consistent results, it becomes very frustrating and expensive very quickly. This is why the team at Fast Forward Unlimited implores clients use email as a cornerstone to their marketing campaigns.

In this particular case, the new marketing client was not new to fast Forward Unlimited at all. This company had been a photography and graphic design client of Fast Forward Unlimited for over 15 years. While their business is largely focused on the wholesale of product to brick & mortars, they also have a growing online presence. It took some convincing, but this client was finally ready to start a Facebook campaign. Seeing positive results via Facebook marketing and some more convincing, they then agreed to try an email campaign.

Coming in, the company had 60,000 email addresses from the brick & mortar locations and 5,000 email addresses accumulated from online buyers on their website. Despite sending emails in the past, they were not able to convert these email addresses into revenue.

Using the 5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through, and Ultimately More Sales the initial email sequence went out offering a basic 20% discount offer in three sequential emails. That month the company nearly doubled their online revenue. Shortly after that success another email sequence was sent and it worked again. To help scale this success, the guys added an email capture pop up on the company’s website, trading an email address for a 10% off offer code. That pop up has resulted in gaining an extra 10 email addresses a day.

Looking at this success the guys were able to recognize several things…

  • Email campaigns are a way to control your revenue. You need an extra push to meet goals? Start an email campaign using the 5 Keys.
  • Keep it simple..don’t overdo your artwork or make your offer convoluted. As soon as a customer has to think about it, the sale’s probably lost. Your email can be beautifully designed, but if it doesn’t convert into sales your client’s not going to care.
  • Exploit what’s working…the 80/20 rule. Your job is not to sell all of your client’s products, your job is to increase their revenue. So if the item is selling, or an offer is working-use it!!

It all comes back to the 5 Keys for Getting eCommerce Emails Opened, Clicked Through, and Ultimately More Sales. If you haven’t downloaded or learned the free PDF, do it!
