Martin Corbett (aka dr trippy) first started playing electronic instruments at the tender age of 14 when he built his own analogue synthesiser. This turned out to be a more-or-less unusable musical instrument and it was to be another 10 years before he got his hands on a ‘proper’ synth – a monophonic Korg MS10. As a member of the Bath-based band Demented Stoats, Martin took the Korg to its first festival (Stonehenge Free Festival) and played regularly with the Stoats until they disbanded. Two of the band went on to join Hawkwind whilst Martin sought out the relative quiet of electronic music composition in the cellar of a flat in Manchester.
As his synthesiser collection grew it became clear that he couldn’t play them all at the same time and so he tentatively entered the machine world of digital sequencing. During the 1990s, Martin slowly entered the computer age and added digital sampling to his musical armoury. It took a couple of brief sojourns to Goa before everything fell into place and the distinctive dr trippy sound was born. Combining Indian vocals, the rhythms and resonance of dub reggae and a battery of synthesisers and effect units, the dr trippy sound caught the attention of Toby Marks (Banco de Gaia) who persuaded him to play his music outside of a cellar. With a couple of Banco support slots in Camden and Birmingham, dr trippy’s music finally reached an audience and performances at festivals -including Glastonbury, Bearded Theory and Beautiful Days – were soon to follow.
‘Invasion by Osmosis’ is dr trippy’s first album and showcases the dubbier side of his music. It is a difficult music to characterise. It is certainly dance music and if there was such a genre as Punjabi Swamp Music this album is it!
Macaronic Sound Machine offers a palette of more diverse sounds to those heard on my previous releases. The enforced closure of live music venues created more time to explore and experiment with instruments and equipment which, pre-Covid, had been slowly gathering dust in the studio. However, the songs retain the same playful bringing together of different vocal and global languages and styles – a musical contribution to macaronic verse poetry, if you will.

Fewer Indian voices too, but more traditional Indian instruments. A smattering of Patois (and Russian rap!) supported by oodles of analogue synth and a soupcon of industrial percussion. The keen-eared amongst you may also notice some delta blues singing on the EP. The Punjab doesn’t have any swamps but the Southern US does.

I don't know what Mark and Michael from Animat have made of my remix of Translucent Transparent. I really hope they like it. Initially I began remixing an unreleased track of theirs called Liquid Fuel but decided it would be more appropriate to remix a track from their Disco Gecko released How to Make a Shadow album. I couldn't shake off the bassline from Liquid Fuel though, and this led inexorably to a reggae vibe on the final remix. As the song progresses it becomes clear that I can't really 'do' ambient and by the end it's dance time! Oops.
