Advent begins in just about two weeks. As well as marking the beginning of our Christmas preparations, the First Sunday of Advent is also the beginning of the new liturgical year.

September 12, 2021 marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, the greatest poet of Western Christianity. While Dante has had a profound impact on art over the centuries, Canadian artist Timothy P. Schmalz has undertaken an ambitious project to sculpt Dante's magnum opus, The Divine Comedy.
Mr. Schmalz is the artist behind the famous Homeless Jesusstatue, which can be found at churches throughout the world. He has also sculpted large public memorials such as Angels Unawares, the Canadian Veterans’ Memorial and Golden Leaves. His latest project, sculpted amidst the COVID lockdowns, is possibly his most ambitious and will feature 100 individual sculptures walking people through Dante's work on Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. He will thus be the first artist to depict all 100 cantos of The Divine Comedy.
Today on the Catholic Exchange Podcast, Timothy Schmalz describes his creative process and how Dante has had such an impact on his work. Mr. Schmalz also tells us about the parallels he sees between Dante-in-exile and the general feelings we all feel in our chaotic world. Through all this, we find in Dante a companion for the road who restores our hope in Providence of God. Today's episode is especially a great start if you have a love of Dante's work or want to dive into his great poem.

If you have any memories of St. Valentine's Day, it's typically for the cards, candy, and big pink hearts everywhere. But who was St. Valentine and why is he so mysterious while his holiday is such a big deal?
To celebrate this day of romantic love, Michael invites his wife Sophie on to tell her the story of St. Valentine and where his relics have ended up. From a flower-crowned skull in Rome to a wax effigy concealing St. Valentine's bones in an old Missouri mission, the bones of St. Valentine have been the site of pilgrimage and healing even as we know so little about the third-century martyr.
The relics of St. Valentine reveal a beloved saint whose work has continued to be inspire devotion and love among those who find them. Even after over 1700 years after his death, we see a church that still asks St. Valentine to intercede in the lives of many couples and single people.

Catholics have produced some of the finest novels ever written, but you wouldn't always know that from today's selections. Some of the faithful have certainly noticed and have started to bring their experience and creativity into the fictional realm in hopes of shaping the broader culture and to re-introduce the Catholic voice to fiction. While his novel has received mainstream praise, he knows that writing a novel isn't easy. Chiara Corbella Petrillo died on June 13, 2012, at the young age of 28. Yet, those who have told her story recount a young life of joy, hope, and strength that has some calling her another St. Gianna. With Sophia Institute Press' newly-translated biography, Chiara Corbella Petrillo, so many are learning of this incredible woman of Christ. What is it about this young wife and mother that has inspired such love and fascination? Michael is joined by FOCUS missionary Lisa Cotter to talk about Chiara's life, her book, and the source of her joy.
After two complicated pregnancies, Chiara and her husband, Enrico, were at first overjoyed to learn that they would have a healthy child that would survive birth. Their happiness was then met with the news that Chiara had developed a tumor and treatment may jeopardize the life of their child. Chiara, out of love for her unborn son, waited until after baby Francesco was safely born. In the months that followed, she would endure intense treatment for her tumor while the souls of both Chiara and Enrico would be tested. Their story is one of faith, hope, and love as lived out in a contemporary family that found the source of their peace and hope in Jesus.
