Luke, in Acts 12, is highlighting that the church has experienced an Exodus from slavery to both earthly kings (Herod) and the overbearing laws of religion (the temple leaders). This week we are talking about how the church has been set free, never again being ruled over by anyone bit Christ; never again submitting to any law but the Spirit of God. Please join us this week, and stick around for the ZOOM afterparty.
This week we are talking about the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge in Luke 18:1-8. While at first we only see the characters of the widow and the judge, the presence of a third character helps us to understand what Jesus is telling us when he encourages us to "always pray and never lose heart.
This week we are talking about the response of the first Gentile church in Antioch, and their response to the new that a famine was coming, as well as how the work of the teacher and the prophet worked to equip them for this response. We are finishing Acts 11.
Jesus changes our view of God, he always has. And when Jesus changes our view of God, we will have to answer for these changes because we will find ourselves in places where religious people believe that we ought not to be. Peter understood that following Jesus into fellowship with the Gentiles meant breaking the religious laws of Gods people, and yet he knew he had to move forward.
The most stunning thing about this entire episode is Peters response, and how the it was received. He was sincere, he was known by his accusers, and he was loved by them because he was already in a loving and caring relationship with them. Therefore, he needed only to tell his story and it was accepted. He didn't need to use theological arguments, he didn't need to use the words of the prophets and the law, he simply needed to say 'here is what happened, and this is how it changed me.'
Growth happens best, not in debate with those on the other side of an issue, but rather by remaining in relationship with them.
This week we are in Acts 11, talking about how to have a COMMUNAL relationship with Jesus as our COMMUNAL Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Join us!
