You can have flawless technique and still wonder why your books aren’t full. The uncomfortable truth is that in body sugaring, the difference between “good” and fully booked often has nothing to do with how perfectly you flick. It’s the experience clients feel, remember, and talk about when they’re back in their car texting a friend your name.
I’m joined by SugarCon speaker Mabel Machabvunga Butler, founder of Tapira, longtime educator, and spa owner with a deep commitment to doing this work with class, care, and consistency. We talk about why SugarCon matters for sugaring practitioners, how to research educators before you spend your time and money, and what to look for when a topic sounds vague but the speaker might be a game changer. If you’re trying to plan your conference day wisely, this will help you choose sessions that actually change how you work behind the table.
Then we go where most trainings don’t: customer experience. Mabel breaks down what makes a client choose you, stay loyal, and happily rearrange their schedule for your next opening. We explore the client lens, the tiny “holes” that quietly damage retention, and the practical elements that create safety, professionalism, and trust, whether you work in a one-room studio or a larger spa. We also share how giving back is woven into business through Tapira’s sugar mats supporting women in Zimbabwe.
If you’re ready to become highly sought after for more than technique, listen through and take notes. Subscribe, share this with a Sugar Pro friend, and leave a quick review so more beauty pros can find the show.

What if being busier isn't the answer?
In this episode, Shannon sits down with Sugar Con speaker Christy Mehelich, owner of The Sugaring Hut, to talk about goal setting, sustainable growth, and creating a business that works for you—not the other way around.
Christy shares her journey from new esthetician to successful spa owner, the lessons she learned while growing a team, and the moment she realized she needed to reconnect with her purpose before burnout took over.
Together, they discuss:
• Why busy isn't the same as profitable
• How to stop setting goals that turn into guilt
• The power of reconnecting with your "why"
• Creating actionable plans you'll actually follow
• Building a business that supports your life and long-term success
Whether you're a beauty school student, solo esthetician, spa owner, or industry veteran, this conversation is packed with practical advice to help you move forward with more clarity, confidence, and intention.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of your next step, this episode is your reminder that success isn't built by doing more—it's built by doing the right things on purpose.

Reactive skin after hair removal can shake a client’s trust fast, even when your technique is solid. We’re raising the bar on intimate care by treating calm skin as a core part of the service, not a bonus. When clients leave your room comfortable and confident, they rebook more, refer more, and stop bracing for the “post-wax fallout” they’ve come to expect elsewhere.
I sit down with Melissa Mercado from Hale And Hush to talk sensitive skin, corrective care, and what’s really going on when irritation shows up in intimate areas. We dig into skin logic: why inflammation, hives, and histamine responses can flare during allergy season, how barrier stress and friction can stack the odds against you, and what simple corrections can change outcomes immediately. Melissa also shares how a sensitive-skin skincare line became a go-to in treatment rooms far beyond the face, supporting areas like underarms, inner thighs, and bikini zones with protocols designed for reactive skin.
We also get practical about communication and client compliance. Aftercare works best when it’s short, calm, and consistent, so I share a 15-second aftercare script you can make your own plus a “calm skin audit” you can try with one client this week. If you want better post-sugaring results, fewer bumps and flare-ups, and clients who feel truly cared for, this one is for you. Subscribe, share this with a beauty pro friend, and leave a review with the #1 question you want answered about intimate aftercare.

Welcome back to The Sugar Show—your go-to podcast for beauty pros ready to master sugaring the smart way and build a career that loves you back.
A lot of estheticians think “male Brazilian” is a single, obvious service—but it’s not. If you’ve ever felt unsure what men actually want, nervous about working with male anatomy, or worried about awkward moments in the treatment room, this conversation was made for you.
In this episode, Shannon (The SugarMama) sits down with Armando of The Sugar Daddy NYC as part of our Road to Sugar Con series. What starts as a conversation about his journey quickly opens up into something bigger—how leaning into a niche, staying curious, and truly understanding your clients can completely transform your business.
We explore the importance of client communication, why “take it all off” is often the wrong assumption, and how creating a safe, professional experience is what keeps clients coming back. This episode also touches on the topics most people avoid—like navigating vulnerable moments in the treatment room with confidence, clarity, and professionalism.
You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at what’s coming next—from our upcoming male Brazilian sugaring course to what we’ll be teaching live at MECA and Sugar Con.
Whether you’re looking to expand your services, build confidence, or step into new opportunities, this episode is your reminder that growth comes from being willing to learn, adapt, and try something new.
🎧 Tune in and come along for the ride to Sugar Con.

Trying to grow a beauty business in a treatment room can feel strangely lonely, even when your books are full. If you’ve been telling yourself you should be able to figure it out on your own, we want to challenge that. Going solo without education and without community doesn’t make you tougher, it usually just makes the climb slower and more stressful.
We’re kicking off the Sweet Success Series: The Road to SugarCon, and we’re sharing why conferences and real peer connection can change a sugaring career. We talk about what community actually gives you in real life: accountability, clear standards, support when you hit a weird skin situation, a reality check when you’re spiraling, plus friendships, referrals, and momentum. We also get practical about the “aha” moments that happen when an educator makes one small adjustment to your hand pressure or technique and suddenly everything clicks.
We also dig into the part no one loves talking about: budgeting. We walk through simple ways to plan for a once-a-year professional conference without debt, from setting aside tips and automating savings, to a small service-price bump or skipping a non-essential subscription for a few months. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of what SugarCon offers, why Cleveland surprised us, and how to start planning your growth intentionally.
If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a sugar pro friend, and leave a quick review so more beauty pros can find the community they’ve been missing.

What if the best service you offer isn’t a technique, but how you notice? We pull up chairs in the Sugar Mamas lobby with Daria—our social media lead and podcast editor—to explore sensory needs, anxiety, and the small choices that turn a treatment room into a safe room. From the rose scent that reads “too much” to the steam that feels like suffocation, Daria shares what many clients never say out loud and how simple, specific check-ins can change the whole experience.
We dig into intake forms as living documents—beyond meds and allergies—adding clear questions about scent tolerance, temperature, music volume, lighting, hot towels, and step-by-step narration. You’ll hear how to read ultra-quiet clients without guessing, create Plan B product options, and take notes that matter so each return visit starts from care, not trial and error. We also talk practitioner honesty and boundaries: how to set a calm tone on low-social days, stack your schedule to reclaim real rest, and choose tiny resets that protect your energy without hurting your business.
Daria also introduces Just Breathe Confessionals, her new reflective podcast about anxiety, heartbreak, and the messy process of becoming. She explains how speaking truths out loud softens shame and why caregivers—esthetician, sugar pro, or massage therapist—need self-love and community to sustain the work. If you’ve been looking for practical, trauma-informed client care, sensory-friendly skincare tips, and smart burnout prevention for beauty professionals, this conversation meets you where you are.
Listen now, subscribe for more human-centered esthetics, and share this episode with a pro who could use a gentler way to care—for clients and for themselves. Have a question or a sensory tip that works in your room? Drop us a note and join the conversation.

Trademark attorney Joey Vitale returns with game-changing news for sugar professionals looking to protect their businesses in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Since our last conversation, the legal landscape has transformed dramatically, creating both new challenges and powerful opportunities for beauty business owners.
The digital revolution has made starting a business easier than ever, but this accessibility has created unprecedented challenges for legitimate entrepreneurs. Joey reveals how AI tools like ChatGPT often provide misleading legal advice, guiding users toward solutions they want to hear rather than legally sound approaches. For sugar professionals navigating trademark waters, this underscores the vital importance of expert guidance.
The most exciting revelation? Google has introduced a blue verified checkmark feature in Gmail that gives trademarked businesses a significant marketing advantage. Only companies with registered trademark logos can access this verification, which helps ensure emails consistently land in primary inboxes rather than spam folders. This represents a seismic shift in how digital platforms are beginning to recognize and reward legitimate businesses through trademark registration.
Joey also shares invaluable insights about strategic naming for beauty businesses. Rather than selecting obvious industry terms (which are likely already trademarked), successful brands are increasingly choosing distinctive, unexpected names that allow for memorable visual identities. This approach not only improves trademark availability but creates more distinctive branding that stands out in a crowded marketplace.
Whether you're just starting your sugaring business or looking to protect an established brand, this episode offers concrete strategies for navigating the complex world of trademarks. Joey outlines multiple pathways to protection, from DIY approaches for those on tight budgets to comprehensive legal services for businesses ready to invest in full protection.
Ready to take your sugar business to the next level? Discover why trademark protection has evolved from a legal precaution into a powerful business advantage that can transform how customers find and interact with your brand.

Kate Sprouse stumbled upon sugaring while teaching at a holistic aesthetics school, and something about this ancient hair removal technique captivated her completely. "Once you touch sugar," she explains, "once I held it, once I got certified, I started playing around with it at home. I sugared any friend or family member that would come around, and I was like this is it? This is the ticket?"
Fifteen years later, Kate's intuition has proven remarkably accurate. Her Portland-based business, Sugar Me, now boasts two thriving locations and recently claimed the coveted "Best Hair Removal" title across all techniques in Portland's 2024 citywide competition. This recognition feels especially meaningful as it signifies sugaring's emergence from relative obscurity into mainstream awareness.
What truly distinguishes Kate's business model isn't just her singular focus on perfecting the sugaring craft, but her revolutionary approach to team building. Rather than viewing employee departures as failures, she's created an ecosystem where team members can flourish under her guidance and eventually open their own studios—with her full blessing and continued support. "I've kind of created a business model where they come, they work, and if they wish to, then they can go out and do their own business as well. And that cycle has kept rolling through," Kate explains. This philosophy of abundance—believing there are always more than enough clients for everyone who does quality work—challenges conventional business wisdom but has created a tight-knit community of sugar professionals in Portland.
For those considering entering the sugar world, Kate offers simple wisdom gained from her journey: recognize that success is "a marathon, not a sprint," appreciate each chapter of your professional development, and understand that business ownership requires entirely different skills than being an excellent practitioner. Want to experience this unique approach firsthand? Visit Sugar Me in Portland, where Kate and her team continue redefining what professional mentorship looks like in the beauty industry.

What happens when the Sugar Mama meets the Sugar Daddy? A frank, educational, and surprisingly hilarious conversation about the specialized world of male body sugaring! Shannon welcomes Armando Gualtieri, founder of The Sugar Daddy - New York's premier sugaring studio exclusively for male anatomy - to share insights from his thriving practice.
Armando's journey from massage therapist and theater artist to sugaring specialist began with his own painful waxing experience (colorfully described as feeling like "someone had punched me in the butthole"). After discovering the magic of sugaring, he built a thriving business with an all-male staff focused on professional, expert care for clients with male anatomy, regardless of gender identity. His approach fills a crucial gap in the beauty industry, creating a safe space where transgender, non-binary, straight, and gay men all receive specialized care without judgment.
The conversation delves into professional considerations unique to male sugaring - from handling spontaneous physical responses to understanding the wide variations in service requests. They discuss how male clients tend to be exceptionally loyal, following instructions meticulously and maintaining regular appointments, though they often need simplified home care routines. Armando shares his expansion plans beyond sugaring into facials, body treatments, and hair growth services, recognizing opportunities to introduce men to skincare they might not otherwise seek.
For practitioners interested in male sugaring, this episode provides invaluable insights from two industry leaders. Shannon and Armando are developing specialized training through Love to Sugar, promising to elevate standards across the industry. Whether you're a sugaring professional looking to expand your services or simply curious about this specialized practice, you'll appreciate their candid, professional approach to a topic rarely discussed so openly.

What happens when a traumatic waxing experience leads to entrepreneurial triumph? Meet Georgia, a sugar professional who transformed her small-town Wisconsin beauty practice into a thriving business supporting her entire family.
Georgia's journey began with a horrifying waxing incident during her pregnancy that sent her to the emergency room and took months to heal. Searching for safer alternatives, she discovered sugaring—but found no practitioners within hundreds of miles. This gap in the market sparked her determination to become the solution her community needed. Starting with just $500 and a borrowed massage table, Georgia built her business jar by jar until she became the "sugar queen" of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Her success has allowed her husband to stay home with their children while she supports the family through her passion for natural beauty treatments.
The conversation shifts to a hot topic affecting sugar professionals everywhere—the rise of laser hair removal franchises and at-home devices. Rather than viewing these developments as threats, Shannon and Georgia discuss how to reframe them as opportunities for collaboration. They explore the unique benefits of sugaring that laser can't replicate: effectiveness on all skin tones and hair types, natural ingredients, and the irreplaceable human connection that comes with the boutique sugaring experience.
For beauty professionals wondering how to navigate this changing landscape, this episode offers practical strategies: focus on skin benefits rather than just hair removal, create memorable experiences that laser clinics can't match, and build referral relationships with other beauty providers. As Shannon reminds us, "Lasers might be having a moment, but sugaring is a movement"—one rooted in holistic care, personal connection, and inclusivity for all bodies. Whether you're a seasoned sugar pro or considering entering the field, this candid conversation provides both inspiration and practical guidance for sustainable success in the evolving beauty industry.

Sarah Herbst's remarkable transformation from a struggling single mother to the "million-dollar sugarist" reveals what's possible when passion meets perseverance. Fourteen years ago, Sarah was living with her mom, jobless with a newborn baby, when she encountered someone performing sugaring at a spa. The elegant technique captivated her immediately - not just for its beauty benefits (it cleared up her eczema) but for the profound human connections it facilitated.
"When someone walks in the room to get a Brazilian with you," Sarah explains, "it's almost like they tell you things that they've told no one else. You bond with this person in such a special way." This realization became the foundation for her business philosophy when she eventually opened Sugar Bar in Ohio.
Her success didn't come overnight. Sarah candidly shares how she cried during her first attempts at sugaring and couldn't afford formal training initially. She developed her skills through relentless practice while building relationships with clients who valued both her technique and her authentic care. When opportunity arose to create her own business environment, she took the leap despite doubts about being "cut out" for ownership.
Today, Sarah manages two locations with thirteen employees, having strategically grown by one staff member per year initially. What makes her business model particularly meaningful is her commitment to hiring single mothers and women in recovery - creating opportunities for others facing challenges similar to those she once navigated. "If you have happy employees, you have a good business," she emphasizes, a philosophy that has clearly served her well.
Sarah's latest venture, SugarCon, represents her gift back to the sugaring community. This first-ever convention dedicated entirely to sugaring professionals takes place June 29-30 in Cleveland, bringing together brands, educators, and practitioners from across the industry. For anyone passionate about sugaring or contemplating their own entrepreneurial journey, Sarah's story demonstrates that success comes not just from technical skill, but from genuine connection, community building, and lifting others along your path.

Are you someone who thinks your clients’ experience begins and ends in the treatment room?Oh if only it were that easy! But we can’t leave it up to our clients to Google or binge-watch TikTok for the latest fads to take care of their skin in between appointments. The results of that can range from silly (did you really think that a flashlight marketed as a "laser" would reduce hair growth?) to downright irresponsible (hello second-degree chemical burn from a high-powered acid exfoliant used on a fresh Brazilian).
Our job as estheticians extend far beyond the treatment room, as proper homecare can help to prepare the skin for the sugaring treatment, as well as promote healing and prevent potential complications after the treatment. So today I’m breaking down the “’Dos” and “Don’ts” of self-care through all stages of hair removal.

Hello and welcome back to one of our favorite weeks. It's time for the Sweet Success Story Series! (Try saying that five times fast).
Each month we feature a body sugaring pro who is killing it in his or her skincare business. We not only follow along on their journey through choosing sugar for their clients, but how it felt to make that decision to learn to sugar, and to ultimately see the benefits of the sweet stuff as it relates to building a strong business.
So this month, I wanted to feature a Sugar Tribe member Cidy Andrews. Cidy has already had big success with her waxing skills, but wanted to take her business, The Nitty Gritty Hair & Waxing Parlor to the next level by actually switching her business to sugar.

The Sugar Show Ep 13: How Sugaring Saved My Life
Host: Shannon Sophia, The SugarMama®
Overview
In 2009, host Shannon Sophia had just gone through a divorce, sold her Lake Tahoe day spa and moved to a new city with her two boys as a single mom. She set up a small skin care studio and was in the midst of creating a new client base when the recession hit, and suddenly many of her clients were no longer able to justify including beauty services in their weekly or even monthly routines.
However, Shannon began to notice a trend: while she lost the majority of her facial clients, her hair removal clients stayed. But how was she supposed to set herself apart from the many other hair removal specialists in her area? Suddenly, it all clicked! The answer was sugaring.
At the time, Shannon had only taken an intro to body sugaring class and was, to be quite honest, terrible at it. However, she wholeheartedly dedicated herself to perfecting her craft by focusing on her sugar ball and practicing on family and friends. Once she began offering sugaring services at her studio, she quickly met every revenue goal she has set for herself and now can’t imagine doing hair removal any other way!
Tune into this week’s episode of The Sugar Show to hear more about the Sugar Mama’s sugaring journey! Learn about the “why” behind Shannon’s business, how she sets herself apart from her competition, and why sugaring has given her a way to not only find personal success, but also to help others thrive.

Quotes:
“Applying for a trademark is the best way to make sure that your brand is available and not stepping on anybody else's toes. So yes, it costs money to file this application. But it's a win win either way, because either you know that it's available and you're protecting it, or you're learning that it's not available.” (15:03)
“Trademarks help you create a powerful brand” (17:36)
“The most valuable part of what you can pay a trademark attorney to do for you, is not the application. It's running a strong search, and then being strategic on how to fill out the application based on that search.” (25:08)

I get asked this question all the time! For those who are scared of laser hair removal or don't want to pay the crazy dollars to get it done, this episode is for you.
Sugaring professionals have been wondering not only about Epilfree as a natural way to stunt hair growth, but whether or not they can use the product in the sugar treatment room. If we have gloves on both hands, and sugar in one of those hands, how do we apply the serum quickly?
How exactly does this product work?
How long until our clients can see results?
Does it really work?
Rene' Stufano is the owner of E.F.Tropics, an importing and distribution company located in Jupiter, Florida. It is considered a "Happy Culture Company" because the happiness of our workmates and customers is our number one priority. Our brands include Epilfree non-laser hair removal, The Illuminating Collection, and O2SkinPro. All are unique, natural, and non-toxic, delivering amazing results.

If that little ball of lemon, sugar, and water has got you frustrated...listen up, this episode is for YOU!
First off... Don't Give Up!
I was a terrible student of sugaring. My brain just didnt connect with my hand to get the mold OR the flick right. I would practice just like my trainer showed me (with no videos at the time to take home with me!). No matter how hard I pushed I just couldnt get that ball of sugar off someone's skin, let alone remove hair!
In this episode, you will not only hear some of my confessions but the tips and tricks I learned along the way to MASTER this technique. I know you can do it too!

Spend some time with your host, Shannon the SugarMama where she dives into the mental side of being a sugaring professional. In this episode, she guides you through understanding that once you shut that treatment room door, sugaring is more than just your technique it encompasses all of the senses for your clients. Clients tend to open up and dump their emotions into the room...and YOU need to know how to not absorb those emotions.
Shannon helps you to understand how to create not only a safe and calm space for your clients...but for YOUR mental state as well. The senses matter to US!!!
Take this time to stop and start your day of service with some calming breaths...to take your vibration from all around the room to focus on you.
When you can center your thoughts and focus on what is in front of you, you can fully be present for your clients and your business.
In between clients, it will benefit you SO MUCH MORE to take a moment to ground EVERY TIME. A few moments will change the entire pace of your day.
You will feel better.
Your clients will FEEL you feel better and grounded.
Anything your clients need, facial, sugar, lashes...YOU are going to be calm, focused, and positive and will get it in return.
For those who have taken the time to listen to this podcast, I have created an audio recording for you to download...to reset yourself before you invite your next client into your room. Before you dust on that powder, put on that nitrile glove, or slide that sugar out of the jar…
This gift is for you...and will directly benefit not only those around you...but I promise you will see a shift in your business success as well.

Now that you have (or your business has) decided how to categorize yourself as an employee or an independent contractor, its time to get PAID!
In Part Two of this Series, Kenesha and Shannon explore how to make sure you get paid properly depending on your business. Working smarter to be strong and sweet in 2021!!
- What is an Independent Contractor or Self-Employed Beauty Professional?
- You are the business owner
- May receive Form 1099 from salon/spa owner or you are receiving monies from your clients and accounting for it yourself
- Responsible for paying and remitting all taxes - federal and state income and payroll taxes
- How you should pay yourself depends on how the business is structured:
- Sole Proprietorship/SMLLC/General Partnership/MMLLC:
- take an owner’s draw from your business banking account.
- Best if done at regular intervals and amounts
- Best if transfer in electronic
- Still responsible for all taxes
- Misconception: If you don’t take an owner’s draw you will not be taxes
- All Net Income is subject to tax, so pay yourself what you want
- Corporations:
- Owners are put on payroll and paid a “reasonable wage”
- Corporation withholds federal and state income and payroll taxes
- Corporation pays half of payroll taxes
- Will receive a Form W-2 at the end of the year

We all know how important exfoliation is to keep the skin smooth and healthy in between sugaring appointments. What you use to exfoliate is critical to a proper homecare routine! Listen in to how Shannon uses the mitts in her treatment room daily.
Meet Steve Landi, Director at Supracor. He has been supporting our industry for the last 17 years by providing a safe, effective and hygienic way to estheticians to retail to their clients.
Any client you have that has a cheap loofah ball hanging from a rope in the shower, its time to replace it with something else that won't host bacteria! Steve reviews how honeycomb cells actually exfoliate the skin.
Supracor products are a great retail addition, especially around the holidays! Men love the Facial Sponge to help with their beards.
Steve reviews how easy it is to keep the mitts clean and disinfected for our use. The mitts are a great addon to your sugaring treatment. Shannon uses them in most of her large area sugaring treatments!
Check out Spa Call Facial Sponge, Stimulite Bath Mitt, and the Body Exfoliator is great for backs!

Each month we are going to choose a topic that Sugaring professionals are tackling either with themselves or their clients. We discuss:
The definition of Anxiety 2020
Heathy Coping skills
Ways to Navigate Your Feelings
We Need to Be Ok with 2020 Sucking
Taking Back Your Power Back

What is Clean? The smell of pine or tea tree? Wiping down with Lysol wipes?
We dive deep to understand what makes a sugar treatment room clean with Stephanie Laynes !
What is Sanitation?
What is the difference between Sanitation and Disinfection?
How safe is Lysol and chemicals for Sugarists who turn their rooms around every half hour?
Are there products out there that we can use that are EPA approved but not toxic for the professional or their clientele?
What is Twin Oxide?
What is the proper protocol for cleaning and disinfecting our room and our homes every day?
Stephanie just launched a new line of products that help the Sugar Pro easily keep their room clean and safe. Sauberwell provides options in sanitation & disinfection for businesses looking for healthier ways to sanitize & disinfect their businesses. Our goal is to help businesses use methods of cleaning with sanitizers and disinfectants that have less irritating aromas (scents), lower irritation response in the eyes, nose/throat for people with allergies, underlying health conditions, and sensitivities.
Stephanie G Laynes has been a licensed esthetician for over 17 years. She is the creator of Se-Brazil Waxes, Se Skin Botanical Skincare, Sauberwell, and owner of Smooth Skin Supply LLC. Stephanie has traveled across the US, Canada, and Australia with her 7-Min Brazilian Wax Technique with licensed estheticians for over 12 years. Shifting her focus on sanitation and disinfection, she created Sauberwell to provide businesses an opportunity to clean with sanitizers and disinfectants that have a lower or no irritation response.
Sauberwell means:
Sauber (Clean in German)
Well (Wellness for Health + Immune + Breathing)

2020 has been a doozy of a year and navigating the ever changing rules and regulations has been a challenge. In this episode of the SugarShow, we introduce you to Karen Hodges, Co-founder of Salon-Gurus.com.
"Education is what I'm all about. I was the person they sent to workshops to learn new software or office programs and products in my first career in the business world. That's certainly followed me into my second career in the beauty industry!" --KH
Karen shares with us the proper way to use PPE in the Sugaring treatment room. Shannon even learned a new thing or two about the proper way to "don and doff" a mask the right way!
Karen and her partner Janet McCormick have authored many high-quality educational training programs for the beauty industry. In addition, the partners offer advanced foot care training for nurses and medical assistants, permanent makeup training programs and others. Today, Karen often travels to US tradeshows as a speaker for America’s Beauty Show, CIDESCO, IECSC, ISSE and other organizations. Her classes are popular and highly-rated.

They have a timely and very relevant course on Safety Training for the Beauty Industry which is hot off the press with post-pandemic information and protocols. www.salon-gurus.com/safety-training

On this episode, we welcome Kenesha Coleman, The Beauty CPA! She owns Coleman Tax and exclusively supports beauty professionals. Listen to find out more about Kenesha’s background and experience!
Today, we dive into tax planning! Here is the key, tax planning should be throughout the entire year to avoid people scrambling for their documents. Plus, any deductions that you are trying to receive must take place during the year. You can’t earn more deductions once the year is complete.
There are several things you should be doing, but we are diving into the top 3!
These three things all work together throughout the year!
Let’s dive into bookkeeping. What exactly is it? This means using an accounting software to track inflow and outflow of transactions that are categorized. Also, make sure you have a separate business account. Everything should be separate for tracking and potential auditing.
Quote: You cannot manage what you don’t track!
Second tip is setting aside money for taxes. Just because you charge $100 for a service, that doesn’t mean it is all yours. Some covers expenses and some covers taxes. The best policy is to set aside 25-30% of your income in a separate bank account. Best part is, once taxes are due, you won’t need to have a payment plan. By doing this, you will have a stack of cash that is available to cover that bill. Make sure you listen to this section—so many good tips and info about setting this up and what can happen without doing it!
The third tip is maximizing tax deductions. Most people are missing out here and it blows my mind! There are some simple questions about your business that can earn you some extra deductions. Mileage is a big one! We discredit how much those small trips add up to.
We need to flip our mindset on deductions. It is a smaller list to view things that you can’t deduct, rather than what you can deduct. Plus, there is no penalty for making a deduction that maybe shouldn’t be there when you file. This is where bookkeeping comes into play. Track and account for EVERYTHING. An accurate record allows you to take a deduction or credit for it.
Homework for you is to get your three steps set and get caught up! Make sure you get Kenesha’s guide on tax deductions!
A business that sells to customers is the technical description of a distributor. Alexander’s is so much more than that!
Alexander’s Aesthetics started in the family. The love of skincare prompted him to purchase many many products over the years trying to find the best ones out there. In the end, this led to a formation of a very large company that was centered around education of doctors and estheticians. This ended up becoming our foundation--to educate and provide information for clients while they are trying to find the right products for them and their businesses.
Q: Wendy, when did you decide to jump into the family business?
A: My mom took it over while I was an adult so I didn’t grow up with it. My husband and I both worked in the volatile business of tech in Colorado and decided we wanted something different. At the suggestion of my mother, we jumped into opening Alexander’s Aesthetics in Colorado. Once I opened the business, I definitely had a new-found respect for my mother and knowing exactly what she did day in and day out for work.
When you work with a good distributor, you get so much more. 16 years ago I started working with you, and here we are--teaching side by side!
Q: How do you choose a company like Sugar of the Nile to bring to your clients?
A: We had been looking around for sugar at the request of some of clients but hadn’t been impressed with any of the companies. When we met Sugar of the Nile, we realized they were not only a wonderful family owned company with a solid product, but Emily was an exceptional person to work with. She was willing to join us at shows and provide education which is completely in line with our business.
Q: What are you looking for when selecting a new product?
A: The things that we are looking for is a reputable company that is in it for a partnership, not as a product sales. They need to be willing to build us as well as us build them up. We test all of the products before bringing it on to ensure that it meets our standards. Cost is also something we look at in order to keep things affordable to our clients. At the end of the day, we try to provide a good sampling of products because there is so much out there. And, we want to make sure they have training and education that can be passed down--it is key.
You all do the vetting process for them! That is an amazing advantage.
One thing that we really talk about with our Sugar Tribe is to engage. It isn’t about just clicking and buying. It is about connecting with your audience. And with the Sugar Tribe, I encourage them to learn more about their distributor, to ask questions about complementary products, and to ultimately provide the best experience for their clients.
Q: What is the best way to engage with a distributor?
A: A physical visit is great if they are able to do it. It allows them to engage and put a face with the name. They can see the personality behind our brand. If that isn’t available, take the classes, look through the materials, and read through the product breakdowns. There is so much information to start with and then you can connect with us for extra questions. Unfortunately, we won’t have trade shows to connect, but call us. Build the relationship with us. And don’t forget, social media! Connect with us there!
Ordering sugar from Alexander’s comes with so much more. You can get internal nutrition to know what reactions could happen, PPE, your supplies, your sugar mats--really everything that you need can come from one place!
If there is something that we don’t carry--ask. The more they hear about a product, the more they will learn about it and research it so that we can consider adding it. Alexander’s can’t possibly carry everything, but this is how they find out about new products.
This episode is a MUST LISTEN! Don’t make the mistake of picking a sugary sweet name for your biz without learning more from our guest, Joey Vitale from Indie Law.
When Joey Vitale was in college, he was bribed by his father to go to law school with a new car. He quickly realized he was not the ‘shark.’ Due to it not fitting, he started his own graphic design business. Through networking, he realized how many people in business had questions. So, he started a law firm to fill the need in order to help cut out the noise.
Many people go with less expensive solutions. The problem with that is there is one solution for everyone--which is not the right solution for everyone. Instead, Joey works with people to educate and empower them in their business decisions.
His law firm focuses on the must haves for a business and has solidified the process into programs for those starting their business.
There are two beliefs that are very common among business owners:
These two concepts cannot coexist. What ends up happening is you wake up one morning to an expanding business that has duct tape. It isn’t protected because when that step should’ve been completed, you were too small.
One of the first steps they need to do is acknowledge that this business is separate from you. It is very easy to take it personally. But absolutely none of it is attached to your worth as a human. That goes both ways--positive or negative. As long as you stay a sole proprietorship, you are connected to the business. This is why it is recommended that you start as an LLC and establish your business is important enough to be its own entity.
Beyond the mental state of mind of being a separate entity, being a Limited Liability Company protects you. In the worse case scenario, if you are ever sued, your personal assets are protected.
Once you are committed to forming an LLC you will find it is quite easy to setup. In Joey’s business, he has resources available to help guide you through the process.
Next--trademarks. With sugaring being our service, we get to have a ton of fun with the names. But here is the thing we all assume, an available domain name means the name isn’t taken. Wrong! A trademarked may exist and down the road, you may be told to change your business name.
Trademarks actually exist to protect the consumer more so than the business. Owners tend to think they are ‘calling dibs’ on the name and they don’t want anyone else using it. But, what trademark protections are really about is the consumer. So they get the brand that they are trying to get. For instance, someone selling shoes that are spelled “Nikee” instead of “Nike.”
I myself as the Sugar Mama ran into this at a tradeshow. I sent someone that was new to sugaring to a vendors table. That person said, “the Sugar Mama sent me.” And the vendor’s response was, “Which one?” I actually had to interrupt and make sure it is known that I am THE Sugar Mama and am protected with that trademark. I was able to do that with your guidance, Joey, so thank you so much!
The key is--protect and focus on your business. Take the time to learn how to properly search for available names. Open that LLC. Start your trademark process. And be the legitimate business! You can flex behind having your ducks in the row.
Last pro tip--do your LLC first! There is actually a difference between the technical name of your LLC and your trademark. When you get an LLC, that name is the backstage business name. Your trademark can be your brand name. If you are overwhelmed, use your name for the LLC and let the trademark be your public facing name.
Aaahhhh Summer. Sunshine, beaches, bikinis...and beautifully smooth skin. Music to an estheticians ears!

Seasoned sugarists know they have a consistent tool to bring clients in the door no matter what time of year--even the hot summers. Cheers to your best and coolest summer yet! #wegotthis
On today’s podcast, we welcome Annie Mayo with Advanced Mineral Makeup.
Advanced Mineral Makeup is more than makeup. In fact, it is so much more that the work “makeup” shouldn’t even be used. It is a skin treatment that colors skin. And the best part, it is the perfect addition to an after-sugaring treatment! Advanced Minerals are made up of just that—minerals! These minerals are bacteria fighting, skin calming, inflammation fighting wonders. Annie suggests adding this as a finishing touch to your treatment because it will benefit everyone’s skin plus add a “finished” touch.
The important takeaway is over the counter contains bacteria—it can’t be helped. Minerals do not grow bacteria. Period.
Plus, with Advanced Minerals, you have four basic colors that you mix to create the perfect color. You don’t have to worry about having an abundance of products left on hand. Every person’s skin tone has a mix of these tones. These are affordable, comes with a tabletop display, and will keep everything so simple!
Then, we have to talk about sanitizing especially in today’s world. In order to make your supply last longer in the store, scrape the top off the powder onto a tissue—this will be what you use for that client. Then, using brushes you can apply. Have 2 or 3 sets of brushes on hand so that you can sanitize the brushes in between clients with brush cleaner. Clients with acne, rosacea, or sensitivities will not have to worry about cross contamination.
One thing to point out is our makeup in non-transferable. What that means in today’s world is that your makeup will stay on your face—even with mask wearing! There will be very slight residue, but it won’t pull off that makeup from your skin. Be safe, wear a mask, and treat your skin right!
We appreciate Annie Mayo’s time and knowledge to join us today. She has provided so much information and a great solution for your clients! Adding this product to your sugaring is a no-brainer.
ABOUT ANNIE MAYO
We believe you shouldn’t have to choose between beautiful makeup and quality ingredients. With 25 years as a Television and Film make-up artist, former esthetician Annie Mayo, launched Advanced Mineral Makeup in 2009 to bring you the purest pharmaceutical ingredients that are free from parabens, talc, fragrance and dyes. In these uncertain times, it's always best to reach out to our business gurus and find some certainty when it comes to our beauty businesses. We will get through these restrictions and come out the other side. And when we do, this episode will come down and a new fresh episode with Angela will go up!
Angela Green is the founder of Skin Biz School, a veteran esthetician, and educator for Se Brazil. She experienced the recession of 10 years ago and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to knowing your business numbers in order to make educated decisions about your sugaring business. In this episode, she discusses how to make time each day while we are at home to focus on your business planning. Specifically how to manage your finances and do a cost per service analysis of each treatment you perform. When it is time to return to business, as usual, you might be tempted to just push a discount, but Angela warns that if you discount too steep you will actually net a low amount and might even come out at a loss.
Let's work smart, esties and cosmos! #wegotthis

Meet the dynamic mother/daughter team of Hip & Chick Organiks, Vanessa and Maria Neu!
BIO:
When we started Hip & Chick we had the hopes of creating a collection of small-batch, handcrafted bath & body products that were infused with our favorite organic ingredients. Since 2012 we have done just that! All without sacrificing style, the most harmonious of fragrances & honest-to-goodness quality.
Working together has been a dream for us as we are that best friend type of mother-daughter team. We have the same taste in everything from fashion to music and movies. (And if it came out between 1980 and 1989, we especially see eye-to-eye!) Through our creating of this business, we are able to experience our individual & unique growth of knowledge and creativity while inspiring and motivating each other. Not only are we able to work side by side but we are blessed in being able to collaborate with so many other amazing women entrepreneurs, where we encourage & empower each other.
As mother & daughter we share the same desire to not only use healthy, natural body products, but they always had to smell delicious too. We began to notice that our choices in that area were quite limited and so we began experimenting with sugar scrubs & soy candles at our home studio in Northern California. We wanted to create a bath & body line using organic ingredients wherever possible without sacrificing the most indulgent aromas & textures. After many long days of testing lush organic ingredients & intoxicating scent combinations, Hip & Chick Organiks was born.
In 2014 our hearts won (yay!) and we finally left the East Bay and moved Hip & Chick HQ to Santa Cruz, a perfect little beach town in Northern California!
Now since 2016 we have had the opportunity to open a retail shop alongside our production studio! It is here, in our shop by the sea, we handcraft each and every product in our line! From measuring and mixing, to pouring and labeling you can find us whipping up luscious batches of our sugar scrubs, lotions, oils & butters, or soy candles almost any day of the week. And, if you happen to find yourself in the Pleasure Point neighborhood of Santa Cruz we invite you to come into our shop for a hands-on experience. With an extremely cozy feel, our shop offers a carefully curated selection of bath, body, candles & gifts crafted by artisans from California and beyond that share our same values and compliment our own collection of products beautifully.

As Sugar Professionals know in order to achieve the greatest results for hair removal, the skin and hair follicles should be as healthy and hydrated as possible. Diet and lifestyle can play a big role, but exfoliation, hydration, and consistent sugar services are key! Utilizing pure products with very few ingredients that clog pores are a must for any regimen.
Today we will learn from Lauri Smetona, owner of RevealU Skincare, about pure spring water and elements in products and just how they work to hydrate freshly sugared clients.

Jenell Garcia, 27-year industry veteran shares her wisdom and insight with us how to love on your clients and have it majorly impact your bookings!
She began as a single mom with 2 small boys and had to quickly figure out how to work through the fear and become a successfully booked esthetician. She is a self-professed workaholic…to make things happen for her boys! She knows the value of hustle and hard work. She is now teaching other estheticians how to reach past their fears and find the lessons that will help them build amazing businesses.
Afraid to spend money on marketing, she began doing events to expand her reach and gain more customers. She became an advocate for our industry and begin meet up groups to get local esties together. She became a huge support to the local estheticians in the Sacramento area. She is truly a teacher and a dynamo. She gives of herself and estheticians learn so much from her. She is real and empowering and a genuine powerhouse in our industry.
We don’t want to miss all that money that is on the table right there in front of us. We don’t want to worry about reaching the world when the clients that already know and like us and not miss the opportunity to honor our existing clientele.
Jenell has recently created a course called 20K Holiday (yes $20,000 in ONE MONTH!) to harness the power of marketing her services in packages that she offers only a few times a year. She creates a theme for the month and while she’s loving on her clients she is offering them something special so they will see the importance of self-care. She creates whimsy and delight for clients while honoring her skills and what she offers in creating these special packages.
Don't worry so much about your socials…your clients already love you! You need to continue to nurture and love on them in order to see your number soar.
You need to CONNECT with your clients so they can talk you up and refer you! They already love you and can passionately spread the word about you! We are so caught up in systems and socials and the dangled carrot of being a Six-Figure Estie that we get stuck and we forget about our clients right in front of us. Have you given them your all in their treatment today? Have you provided them with your everything or are you sidetracked?
Expand your clientele by expanding your connection with your existing clients. When you step into the treatment room, what can you take out of your tool belt to be your very best for that client on your table? How you show up and love your clients will determine how truly successful your business will become. You can do a really beautiful facial, but have you offered a sugaring add on to remove those pesky hormonal chin hairs? The hour you spend with them should be ALL ABOUT THEM. In turn, it will be so much better for you!

Thanks for tuning in! Welcome to the very first episode of the SugarShow!
To give you some background my clients named me the SugarMama because:
But to me being The SugarMama means I will guide you and give you solid REAL advice. We will work through all the things not only sugaring techniques but business and growth and a whole lotta gratitude.
We will laugh
We will learn
And we will do big things. I'm not shy!
For 10 years now I’ve made my living sugaring an enormous clientele and for the last 5 years, I've been teaching esties all over the world how to master the art of body sugaring.
I've been able to go from scared single mama back then not knowing in a recession how I was going to feed my kids… to tripling my income and hiring a staff of esties and front desk dynamos to accommodate the growth. I've been able to help thousands of esties around the world to not only LEARN to sugar but BUILD their confidence and skills.
So today I am so jazzed to “relaunch” this SugarShow podcast actually. We had started this Show about 4 years ago and got so busy with our SugarMamas shop and teaching all the new ISU students how to sugar that we put it on the back burner.
Over the years I always tried to be brand neutral and focus on the techniques. I never shared my favorite things from sugar pastes to skincare companies I love and use…UNTIL NOW. Its time to take that SugarShow off the back burner and turn up the heat!
The sugaring industry is BOOMING…when I started not many people had heard of sugaring as an option and now its a THING! :). So NOW its time to talk about sugaring…from the companies that I love and respect to the skincare and tools that complement the work that SugarPros do, to industry trends both good and not so good.
So if you have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for the right time - now is your time.
Each week I am going to deliver you soooo much knowledge AND introduce you to the most savvy educators, coaches, and biz owners I know.
Not only will we show you how to get started & learn the proper techniques but mostly how to drive your skincare biz to new heights.
This podcast is for you if you are currently a sugaring seasoned professional or are just learning to sugar. If you are an educator or a day spa owner. If you are an employee or an independent contractor….
We will learn how to master the technique and learn new tricks
Utilize hair removal in the treatment room along with other skincare modalities
Build your clientele database
Learn about complementary services and companies
Choose the best sugar supplier for you…or introduce you to the new ones that are coming on the scene.
Learn about things like trademarks, entrepreneurship, and best accounting practices
And soooo much more!
We have all waxed for so long and now that we have that beautiful sugar ball in our hands its time to open new doors with it!!
