It all started so well as very early goals from Taiwo Awoniyi (breaking the record for scoring in consecutive Premier League matches) and Willy Boly fired the Reds into a two-goal lead, but then the home team woke up, with the assistance of one or two refereeing moments; Steve Cooper merely commented how quick the official was to blow the whistle, rather than taking his time. Steven and Tom discuss the action, the tactics and what it takes for an away team to get a victory at Old Trafford. We are also joined by Callum Castel with another bumper news roundup. We'll be back after the Burnley League Cup match. The Reds got their first win of the season with a fine late header from Chris Wood. It had looked like Forest were the architects of their own downfall, after taking an early lead through Taiwo Awoniyi's header, they looked good, until they ... well, didn't. The visitors were hoping Gustavo Hamer's equaliser after the break would earn a point, but Stevie Cooper's subs made a difference. Maradona of the Midlands is joined by Baz and Adam to discuss the action, the tactics and the City Ground atmosphere, as well as what we are learning about the Forest squad. We are also joined by Callum Castel with a bumper news roundup and we thank Chad from the Red Half Of Sheffield for providing a view from the opposition. It was an opening day defeat at The Emirates, although a late rally from the Reds gave the home team a bit of a scare, when an electric break from Awoniyi and Elanga led to the big number 9 netting his first goal of the season. There's still work to do, as discussed by Steven Toplis, with George Edwards and Ellie Molloson, fresh back from north London. We also hear from Arsenal fan Chris, with his views on the game and what he thinks about Forest. We'll be back with a report after Friday's home match against Sheffield United. This is a podcast that we didn't want to record as we come to terms with the deaths of Forest legends Trevor Francis and Chris Bart-Williams. In this episode we look back on their Forest careers and share some memories. Monday 24th July 2023 was a desperately sad day for supporters of Nottingham Forest, as well as Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham City and Leyton Orient, amongst others. Hosted by Rich Ferraro, with Maradona of the Midlands, Adam and guest appearance by Zigger Zagger. Part 2 of the Grant Holt interview will be with you very soon. As the season pauses for the World Cup in Qatar, we return with another Forest Ramble, in which we discuss events at the City Ground over the last few weeks:
The on-pitch progress made by the Reds
How much of a boost has Steve Cooper’s new contract given to players, fans and the club more widely?
Are the new signings finally bedding in?
Can Morgan Gibbs-White, Jesse Lingard and Brennan Johnson really play in the same team?
We will also have our regular sketch from Jeremy Davies; we will hear from you, the fans; and we will have a game of Guess That Red - all in this episode of 1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast. Forest got a home win against Crystal Palace to round off the first part of the Premier League season before the World Cup break. The result was crucial because it took the Reds off the bottom of the table, and it also means that the Reds have surpassed the points record of Derby County's Worst Team In History, with well over half the season to go! Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands to talk about team selection and tactics, VAR, and why Stevie Cooper is such a gem. We also hear from Jim of the Five Year Plan podcast, to give a view from the away end. We'll be back to sum up the first half(ish) of the season before the World Cup begins - stay tuned! It was a satisfying night at the City Ground, as Steve Cooper's much-changed team put a strong Tottenham side out of the Carabao Cup. Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard both scored their first Forest goals, and it could have been more, before Orel Mangala saw red for a second bookable offence. Adam reports back, fresh from the City Ground, reporting on performances, goals, and his wife attending her first Forest match, only to be reduced to the role of "designated Bovril holder". Sorry, Mrs A. We'll be back with a full-length match report after the Palace match. A point gained, or two dropped? A late late own goal rescued a point for the Reds in a game laced with refereeing controversy - Steve Cooper said that either all the penalty claims should have been given, or none of them, and even the OG needed VAR to confirm whether or not there was an offside. Oof. Steven Toplis and Baz discuss Morgan Gibbs-White's first goal in a Red shirt; the penalties that were, and weren't given; and whether a draw at home to Brentford means that Forest are destined for the drop, or does a mostly positive performance give us hope? We also hear from Billy Grant of the Beesotted podcast, for a view from the away end. Steve Cooper could not hide his emotions as Forest crumbled in the second half to lose by five goals to league leaders Arsenal. The Head Coach was understandably annoyed that, having mostly followed the game plan in the first half, his players threw it out of the window with a lack of the basics - hard work and application. Rich Ferraro is joined by Tom Newton, who was rather vexed that the fans turned up, but the players didn't. We discuss what the plan might have been and what Forest will need to do to avoid the drop this season. We are also joined by Bob from The Away Gooners YouTube channel, who gives his thoughts on the match and Forest's prospects. It's the return of the 1865 Forest Ramble! In our monthly discussion show, we take the time to have a chat about Steve Cooper and his role in plugging our leaky defence; off-pitch matters, with the arrival of Filippo Giraldi and dismissal of Andy Scott and George Syrianos; and we take the time to discuss the accusations of offensive chanting by Forest supporters in the Liverpool match, with our guest Zigger Zagger. Rich Ferraro presents, and is joined by Steven, Tom, Adam and Baz to talk about the key issues of the last month or so, and also to play a game of Guess That Red. We are also delighted for the return of Jeremy Davies with the 1865 Sketch, on the perils of supporting your team via live text. A great victory for the Reds, as Taiwo Awoniyi's goal against his former club was enough to defeat Liverpool. Morgan Gibbs-White and Ryan Yates could have added to the lead before Dean Henderson made several late saves to preserve the points. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the match, the tactics and notable performances from the likes of Kouyate, Yates and Awoniyi, although the whole team performed well. We also discuss Steve Cooper's tactical plan and how the players seem to be working as a unit - does this give the Reds a chance of avoiding the drop this season? Not one for the neutrals, this game saw Forest finish with an XG of 0.13, as the hosts' inability in front of goal, coupled with some resolute defensive play from the Reds, saw Forest leave the Amex with a hard-fought point. In truth, Dean Henderson only had to make one or two decent saves, and Leandro Trossard's effort hit the bar, so Roberto de Zerbi's men really should have made more of their territorial advantage. Steven Toplis and Tom Newton discuss a game which saw Forest's only real shot go out for a throw-in; Scott from We Are Brighton also joins us to discuss a game which won't live long in the memory, but which was kind of fun in its own way. Is it too early for this to count as a six-pointer? It was certainly a bitterly disappointing result as Wolverhampton Wanderers, lowest scorers in the league, managed to beat Forest in a tale of two penalties; Ruben Neves made his spot-kick count, while Brennan Johnson saw his effort saved by the one-armed Jose Sa. Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis to discuss the game, the performance, the lack of composure, and to ponder on Steve Cooper's post-match thoughts - the gaffer certainly doesn't seem to be shying away from the challenge. We also hear from Wolves fan Matt Langham, who has some kind words for the Reds after a match in which neither team looked that sharp. Finally, Callum Castel provides the 1865 news roundup, prompting Rich and Steven to have a brief discussion over what is really happening at the City Ground. It was the first chance for Reds fans to show their appreciation to Stevie Cooper since he signed his new contract, and the players alos showed their love for the gaffer with a much improved performance. Villa have problems of their own, but aside from Ashley Young's rocket, rarely posed any real threat. Rich Ferraro and Baz take time to dissect the action, and reflect upon Cooper's team selection and tactical approach, and how this gave the Reds some much needed spine. We also have praise for a number of players including Morgan Gibbs-White and Emmanuel Dennis. The view from the away end comes from Neil, the host of For The Love of Paul McGrath podcast. A rollercoaster week at the City Ground, which started with Forest slumping to the bottom of the table and speculation that both Steve Cooper and Dane Murphy were facing the sack, but ended with a new Sporting Director, but the CEO retaining his position and the Head Coach signing a new contract which ostensibly keeps him at the City Ground until 2025. Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands to discuss the ups and downs of the past week, and we dip into the collective wisdom of our podcast crew, with Callum and Tom making radio appearances to discuss the gaffer and Adam sharing his reasons why it was the right thing to do to extend Cooper's stay. We also preview Monday's encounter against Aston Villa, which arguably takes on a new lease of life as the fans show their support for the Reds' gaffer. Another painful and humbling night for the Reds, as Steve Cooper's men endured a torrid first half, conceding three goals in quick succession. The second half saw some improvement, but in truth it was difficult to say whether this was real, or just the consequence of the hosts having a commanding lead. Steven Toplis and Tom Newton report after their visit to the King Power Stadium, discussing the game and the speculation over the future of Forest's Head Coach. As Steve Cooper marks his first anniversary as the Nottingham Forest Head Coach, Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands to think about Forest can make the most of their newly-assembled squad. We hear from regular pundits Adam, Baz and Steven with their first choice Reds line-ups, and you might not be surprised to find out what they think about playing a back three. We also have a news round-up from Callum Castel, including some of the speculation about a possible new Sporting Director to work alongside Steve Cooper, and the panel discuss whether that means that Forest are thinking about ways to strategically and practically support the gaffer as Forest adjust to top level football. The history books will show that, for the second game running, the Reds relinquished a half-time lead, and conceded three second half goals, as well as all three points. In reality, they showed a bit more to offer this time around, although Steve Cooper had to concede that there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of getting the team to gel and maintaining composure. Baz is joined by Tom Newton to discuss the game, team selections, tactics, formations and substitutions. Amongst other key questions, what difference did it make playing with a number nine, did Forest look better with a back four, and how come Lewis O'Brien was so much more effective than both Ryan Yates and Remo Freuler? In an episode recorded before the announcement of the Queen's passing, our panel have a deep dive into the Reds' first few weeks back in the big time. It's fair to say that it has been a whirlwind, and results have been a mixed bag; a good win and away point at Everton were counterbalanced by a tough first day at Newcastle, a good performance but defeat against Tottenham, and a really disappointing day at the office against Bournemouth. Steven Toplis leads the discussion, joined by Adam, Baz and Tom Newton; as usual for our monthly discussion, Jeremy Davies also pops in with his regular sketch. With the extended break, hopefully players like Mangala and Niakhate can return to fitness, and the Reds can have some valuable time to gel. We'll bring you a match report after the Fulham game. This one felt far worse than being hit for six by Man City, as the Reds lost the battles on and off the pitch against one of our rivals (at least in terms of possible league positions). With Scott Parker gone, Gary O'Neil showed tactical awareness by changing formations and approach in the second half, and Steve Cooper and his team were simply unable to respond. It had all felt so good at half-time as well, with Brennan Johnson's spot kick adding to Cheikhou Kouyate's header (from a corner!), but Phil Billing's 30 yard rocket swung the momentum back towards the visitors early in the second half, as the Reds lost the physical and tactical battles. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the game from a Reds perspective, with a view from the away end coming from Kirk of the Cherries Red Army. We are also joined by Callum Castel-Nuovo with a round up of the Forest news. It was a humbling night for Steve Cooper's Reds at the Etihad, where they were soundly beaten by the world's best coach, best striker, and then they brought the best midfielder off the bench. The key thing here is that City were just too good, but Forest's gaffer admitted afterwards that the away side were naive and there was much to learn. Baz is joined by Tom Newton, fresh back from Manchester, to offer a post-mortem on the game. We also hear from Mike Passaris from the Perth De La Prem podcast, offering the Man City perspective. In an episode recorded before last night's transfer deadline, we also hear some thoughts on the rumours circulating around the City Ground. It was a disappointing defeat but positive performance from Steve Cooper's men, as the opposition showed what a difference a striker can make. Forest had chances, most notably from Ryan Yates and Neco Williams, but apart from Lewis O'Brien's long-range effort, Hugo Lloris did not have a save to make. On the other hand, Harry Kane had three chances, and although his penalty was well-saved, he was clinical in scoring a brace. Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands to discuss team selection, physicality and Richarlison's antics. The Reds made the trip to Blundell Park, ate their chippy tea and made eleven changes to the starting line up as Steve Cooper took the opportunity to get minutes into the legs of some players. Ryan Yates, Remo Freuler and Guilian Biancone put themselves back in the mix; Emmanuel Dennis, Sam Surridge and Loic Mbe Soh will have appreciated the minutes; and for youngsters such as Aaron Donnelly and Zach Abbott, it will have been a dream come true (Abbott gets his GCSE results this week!). Guest reporter George Edwards shares his thoughts on the game, fresh from his evening out at the seaside, as impressive first half finishes from Yates and Surridge gave control to the Reds, before Grimsby came back at us and we needed Surridge's second goal of the night to put the game to bed. In a podcast extra, we bring you our panel's Premier League predictions: who will finish in the top four, who will battle the drop, and which gaffer is likely to face the chop? We also have a discussion with Premier League podcast Perth De La Prem, to get their predictions but also to discuss what they think about the Reds' ascent to the top flight and how they think Forest will fare in the top flight. Nottingham Forest are about to start their first Premier League this century, and we are here for it! In our preseason preview, Rich Ferraro is joined by Tom Newton, Steven Toplis and the Maradona of the Midlands to discuss transfers (in and out), the ground redevelopment proposal, and reflect upon a busy summer for the club hierarchy. The headlines were grabbed by the capture of Jesse Lingard, and our Adam spoke to BBC 5Live's Juliette Ferrington to share his excitement, but there have been 11 (ELEVEN) other additions and probably more to come. In addition, we hear from City Ground Stadium Announcer Mark Dennison, as he looks forward to plying his trade in the top flight - will we still be hearing Freed From Desire and Just Can't Get Enough? We also have the return of our old friend Jeremy Davies (JDingz) with the 1865 Sketch, and introduce our news reporter Callum Castel-Nuovo. It's our first Premier League Podcast! In this episode, Steven and Adam have a chat about the fixture list, and whether it feels real yet. We also discuss some of the transfer speculation as rumours circulate about the possible departure of fans' favourite Brice Samba and potential arrival of Taiwo Awoniyi and Moussa Niakhate. We'll be back later in the summer to talk transfers and preview the season. In the meantime thanks for listening! Just a bit of fun to end the season, as Tom Newton grills Rich Ferraro, Steven Toplis and Baz on their knowledge of Nottingham Forest's Premier League years. Jeremy Davies pops in at the end to award the prizes, and we take the opportunity to say thank you to some of the many people who have contributed to the podcast this season. We'll be back in August to preview the new season as Steve Cooper's Forest get ready for the Premier League! In this podcast extra, we bring you the full interviews with our recent guests City Ground Stadium Announcer Mark Dennison and football writer Nick Miller. Mark brings you the ins and outs of the big day out at Wembley, the mild panic about Steve Cook's fruity language at Slab Square, and the joys of working at the City Ground in a historic season for the club. We also take a few minutes to show our appreciation for Radio Nottingham's Forest commentator, the marvellous Colin Fray. Nick tells us about his experience as a fan on the day, and whether this would count as his greatest ever day as a Forest supporter. We also discuss the accusations of media bias, and that the press wanted the Reds to go up - no spoilers here, but journalists love a good story. Finally, we also discuss whether that rainy night at Ashton Gate was the turning point in Forest's season. We have one more podcast coming up for you this season, with our Premier League Quiz. In the meantime, thank you to Mark and Nick, and thank you for listening. We have produced 76 podcasts so far, and still to come this season, we have extended versions of our interviews with Mark and Nick, and we will have the Premier League Promotion Party Quiz. It was the big day out and Forest have done it! A first half own goal from Levi Colwill, under pressure from Ryan Yates, gave the Reds a slender advantage. In truth Forest were the better team in the first half and Yates should have given them the lead with a header which went just wide. Naturally, the Terriers came back at us, and although they didn't have many clear efforts on goal, they will feel aggrieved that they didn't get at least one penalty, even with VAR. On a special day, we have a special match report, with Rich Ferraro and Baz bringing you thoughts and reflections from before, during and after the game, along with roving reporter the Maradona of the Midlands, and some of the atmosphere from the Red end of Wembley - do visit our social media for more clips (see link below). Apologies to podcast subscribers using Apple. There was a problem with our feed but hopefully this has now been fixed. This podcast was initially published on Monday 23rd May, and we hope you can still enjoy it before the big day out at Wembley No-one saw this coming eight months ago - Forest are on their way to Wembley to play in their first ever playoff final! Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz, Steven Toplis, The Maradona Of The Midlands and Tom Newton to discuss the rollercoaster of emotions during and after the semi-finals against Sheffield United, and whether we have "pre-traumatic stress disorder" (c. Nick Miller, 2022). Naturally, we discuss the importance of belief and PMA (positive mental attitude). We are joined by guests including Hal from The Sheffield United Way to reflect upon the semi-final, and the aftermatch shenanigans; and Brady from And He Takes That Chance to get the lowdown on what Forest should expect from The Terriers at Wembley. We'll be back after the big match with a review of the match, and end-of-term debrief. By the time the season is over we will have recorded 75 podcasts this season; thank you so much for joining us.
