There are a lot of really great artists that go unnoticed, and their music is freely and legally available online. Alternative Airwaves discovers those artists.
Taking a stroll down memory lane, I've started a new project: going through my CD crates one-by-one and thinking about where my life was when I listened to these albums, and listening to them again to see what I think of them.Playlist:

Two months later, I'm back with a podcast full of heavy guitar riffs with some lighter stuff mixed in for good measure.
I had a fun time putting this episode together and I hope you enjoy it. Here's the track listing (with links to the tracks or artists).

Welcome back to another full edition of Alternative Airwaves! This episode is more songs than talking, but I got struck by inspiration late last week and slapped something together. I was missing some pieces of my usual setup, so it's a bit bare-bones - but it's still got great music!

Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: My Sweet and Sour Room by Icicle. This is an instrumental track by Montreal artist Icicle; I found this by looking at similar artists to Lower Loveday from last week's episode. I don't normally pick out instrumental tracks, but I really liked the beat and instrument choice in this song. Icicle is actually Krassy Halatchev, and has Bulgarian origins. I think you can really hear some of his influences come through in this track. You can follow him on Jamendo or icicle dot club.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: You Could've Been My Queen by Lower Loveday. This great indie track brought me back to the early 2000's indie scene with great British bands like Arctic Monkeys, or The Fratellis. Lower Loveday is indeed a British group, and got their start in a school talent show. They've been all around the UK and the world, and are making some great music. Aside from this week's track I also recommend Is It Right, currently one of their more popular tracks on Jamendo. You can find them online at lower love day dot com.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: Problems by The DLX. Problems is an R&B-leaning pop track from American artist The DLX, based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. No albums on Jamendo, but there are three singles you can check out. I liked this one for its simple beat and lyrics. Find out more about The DLX at the dlx dot net.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: Wild by The Rabbits. Wild is a quiet folk track from "Tall Pines and Tangled Vines", a 2018 debut LP by The Rabbits. The Rabbits hail from the UK, but are listed as Canadian on Jamendo - probably because they recorded their record at Orchid Studios in Vancouver, B-C - and they are also touring around Canada. Apparently they're doing this from a van they've been living in for almost a year. That's dedication to their music! Follow them on Jamendo or at the rabbits dot com.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: Don't Wait by The Halt. What do you know - another track out of the US. This time, The Halt: a rock group that formed in 2017 featuring Neil Matharoo (from the band Soundstatues) and Andrew Schwartz, both from Brooklyn. They don't have any albums on Jamendo, but they do have four singles at the time of recording. Don't Wait is a good mix of alternative and grunge, leaning more on the alt rock spectrum. You can buy their music at the halt dot band camp dot com.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: All I need is You by Semmuel. This track features some dark synth sounds and I think fits right alongside today's Top 40 songs. Semmuel is a hip hop / R&B artist based out of the U-S. From Jamendo: his music career began in 2017 when he signed with Graphic Entertainment Music, and eventually released a solo song "Athena" in June of that year - it was featured as Jamendo's artist of the month.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: Boomerang by HoneyChrome. Boomerang is a great pop track, released in 2018 by an American artist, based on Brooklyn N-Y-C. I find it really reminiscent of early 2000's pop, with a bit of eighties flair mixed in. It's a fun, short track and well worth following to see what he comes out with for 2019!

This week's track: Games by Tony Petersen. This is a light folk track, from the album A Soft Place to Land (2018). Petersen is an American artist, playing guitar from age 15 and has performed across America since high school. This is a solo track but is a member of a band called The Social Animals.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: Undercover by Neon Niteclub. This group reminds me a ton of Canada's own Chromeo. Neon Niteclub is from the US, and describe themselves as "80s pop with a modern twist". Undercover comes from the 2018 album Blue Electric Eyes (be sure to check out that track as well). You can find their music on jamendo dot com or neon niteclub dot bandcamp dot com.

This week's track: By Your Side by Cartel ft. Mallz & Deron Alek. By Your Side is an exclusive track on Jamendo.com, another hip hop track just as good if not better than last week's track from Tab.
The description of the track:
`The problem of being "friends with benefits" is that eventually, someone catches feelings and wants to become more than what they are. Mallz and Deron Alek speak on just such a situation over a track by Hoodgrown Productions.`

This week's track: Times by Tab. Tab is a hip hop artist based in the US. He first started producing music at the age of 5, playing the drums. Fast forward to 2018 - he is in an underground group called Dead Poet Society. His latest solo album is A R T I S T, released December 2018. About the album:
A R T I S T “Always Reveal Truth In Strange Times” is the mantra for the new album. It was written for all the creatives still out there trying to balance adulthood & responsibilities with dreams and purpose. Growth is the major theme of this project.

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.
This week's track: Astronauts by Parker. Here's a description of the artist and the track from Jamendo.com: Parker is a band from Miami, Florida, comprising of Reed F. Gaines and Carter Vail. The pair met at the Frost School of Music in 2015 and began making music later that year. Parker released their eponymous EP in April of 2018, featuring Lo-Fi indie music with a nod towards Alt-Country. Parker will be releasing their next single, ‘Astronauts’ on November 16th under Dreamtime Palace, with an EP to follow in early 2019.
`Astronauts is a futuristic synth song about being stuck on the moon. Featuring high falsetto voices & the warbling sounds of the MICROKORG, 'Astronauts' is a love song about missing Earth and the isolation of space.`
If you're wondering, the MICROKORG is a synth from Korg released in 2002, and still in production today. Listen for it as you take in Parker's "Astronauts". Be sure to check out alternative airwaves dot com for more podcasts and music reviews. See you next time.

Kicking off 2015 with a somewhat lazy look at 2014; most of these tracks were taken from Jamendo’s Best of 2014 playlist, with a few exceptions. I’m going to try to keep up with the podcast on a more regular basis in 2015 as well. In today’s episode I mostly talked about random things. Apologies for some of the music hiccups! My intention today was just to get a podcast released. Stay tuned to the end of the episode & hear some podcast recommendations.

It's Saturday afternoon, and now's as good a time as any to release a podcast! I had no central theme today - just thought I'd find some cool Creative Commons music and string together a show. Still, I seem to have gravitated to a mostly Punk-themed selection but there should be a little bit for everyone (except maybe the hip hop crowd).

Not to be confused with the CBC Radio 3 Podcast Road Trip special, I've done this a couple of times in homage (read: rip off) of my favourite Canadian music podcast. While this podcast does not feature 100% Canadian music (in fact, I think it's 0% this week!), I talk about the Trans Canada Highway and some trivia related to it. All music today comes from Jamendo.com - check it all out below.

Drawing direct inspiration from CBC Radio 3's Sweatin' To the Indies, I present to you The Workout Podcast - Creative Commons version! I think I've attempted this before, but this time around the music is a lot better and I did my best to edit the music together so that it flows. Minimal interruption from the sound of my voice, wall-to-wall music...this podcast should help you when you need some high energy music during your work-out. Summer seems to have suddenly switched on! At least, that's the case in Ottawa. In today's slightly shorter episode, I've picked some "classic" songs and some newer songs, and also was completely unaware of the technical glitches at the start of the podcast. No solid topics of conversation in the show, just lots of great music. If you're an App developer, you have until June 9th to submit something to the Jamendo App Contest.
To listen, download from Archive.org, iTunes, or Stitcher. Please note I am aware of the technical issues downloading the podcast from iTunes; if you have an iOS device, you should be able to download from the Podcasts app without problem. Or just get Stitcher - it's pretty great.

Back with a new show this week! I scoured the Internet for new releases, and had to stretch a bit for what I considered to be "2013" new releases. What I found were some pretty great tracks, and if it wasn't technically a new release, it's a bit of a preview of what is to come this year. Going by the tracks I picked, it looks like we're going to have another great year of Creative Commons-licensed music!

I'm trying something different with today's podcast - an audio magazine of sorts! I'd like to be a little more informative, or at least different, instead of being just a podcast that plays a bunch of music. No fancy title today, my mind was a little blanked. A couple of notes for this episode before you listen: one, I was trying a new method of recording (that ended up being much less convoluted), so there are going to be a couple of hiccups here and there - especially at the beginning, where my voice is overpowered by the music. Woops! Two, because of the microphone I have and the method I used, my mic had to be on at all times, so there may be some background noises throughout the podcast. As I warned on Twitter, my dog probably makes a frequent appearance in the first segment.
Now that's out of the way, onto the show notes!

Well, the debut of a new podcast format did not come without its stumbles. It's still very much a work in progress, and I can only improve from here. I apologize for the poor mic quality - that's also something I need to fix again. Some great music this week though, so click away and listen! Here are the show notes!

It's been two weeks, so that means it's time for a new podcast! I normally get these up on the same Saturday that I record them, but events this weekend that may or may not have had something to do with watching Moneyball and baking an apple crumble served to interfere with those plans. In any case, here is your latest podcast! Savour it, because it may appear in a slightly different format two weeks from now (insert ominous chords here).

NOTE: I meant to say this during the podcast but I forgot. If you're a fan of Battlestar Galactica, you may want to check out some neat fan fiction called Lords of Kobol. I recently finished book one, Apotheosis, but there's one other book already out and a third due out shortly. Check it all out at http://lordsofkobolbook.blogspot.com/.

I'm finally back with a new podcast! It's been since the end of July since I released a new episode, and for that I am deeply sorry. But the move is complete, and I have some brand new stuff for you. Today I was just winging it a little, but I plan to put some more work into the blog and get some exciting things happening. Okay, enough talk - onto the track listing!

** Yes, I know I said in the podcast that Paper Tiger was Canadian. I don't know where that came from, but on my computer that's how I have it marked down. They are in fact from the Netherlands.

""Dog Days" (Latin: diēs caniculārēs) are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather." -- Wikipedia
Your eyes are not lying! I'm going away this weekend, so I thought I would release the podcast a few days early. It's a little long this time around, but since it's been three weeks since the last episode, I figured nobody will mind! Some great music in there, starting off hard and fast and ending on a similarly strong note. Except for one or two songs, everything in the podcast has been featured on the blog in the last three weeks.

Alternative Airwaves is now hosted on archive.org! Eventually I'll be porting all the older podcasts over there so they can all be found in one spot. Here's the original post for the podcast.
Hopefully the fan I had on to cool down the "studio" didn't cause too much background noise. I had a fun time putting together this playlist, and listening as I recorded. I guess if you read the track listing, the "secret cover song" won't be so secret!

Thanks for joining me for another fun-filled show. Some great tracks, ranging from the 1970s (Single Bullet Theory) to a new track from 2011 (Josh Woodward). I started the show a little differently today thanks to a fun song by Hot Fiction; I also announced the next themed podcast, coming up June 25th. But it's still June 11th, so enjoy this podcast now!

Today's podcast is a little mailed-in, mostly a result of being on vacation for five days over the Victoria Day long weekend. But that doesn't mean I haven't selected some sweet tracks - on the contrary! I consulted the Jamendo Top 100, and picked out a few songs that I really liked. Enjoy!

It's been 4 weeks since I last did a "regular" podcast - what with last episode being a themed podcast (which was a lot of fun to do) - so it feels good to be back in the groove picking out new music. Some great stuff in today's episode, including - finally - a track from my brother's band. Keep reading for the playlist.
Just to recap, Capital Grass and the No Men are playing a live show TONIGHT (April 30th), 9:00PM, at the Elmdale Tavern in Ottawa. Cover is $6 and they're playing with Jon Laurie-Beaumont and Slim and Popular. Here's the Facebook event page if you're interested. If you're NOT in the Ottawa area, I'll be posting a show review on Monday (with pictures, possibly).

The podcast this week is a little different than what most might be expecting - as I mentioned in the last episode, I've been planning a couple of theme podcasts. Welcome to Themecast #1! All the music in today's show is swing music. This has resulted in a slightly shorter show actually, because it was slightly difficult to find music to fit the bill - well, music that I liked. I think I found some great stuff; listen for yourself and decide! Playlist follows below...

Episode 22 is officially available! The show started off a little rocky but I recovered - I blame either the beautiful afternoon sun beaming into my "studio", or the advent of the gigantic full moon later tonight. Take your pick. I did it - I made it to 20 episodes! In this week's episode, you'll hear quite a bit of hip hop (some of it not so conventional) plus some bluegrass mixed in between. All this and more...in episode 20 of Alternative Airwaves!
Unfortunately the iTunes feed is still broken, but I hope to get it fixed in the near future. But probably not until the next podcast.

The first new podcast of 2011 is finally done! I thought I picked some really awesome music to kick the year off on a great note. The standard playlist with links to artists' websites is below, but first a couple of links I mentioned during the show:
- International Sock Monkey - I mentioned this in the blog earlier in the week; it's the free music blog put together by the members of Bella Ruse.
- 23 Seconds - A great netlabel from Gothamberg, Sweden.
- Aaahh Records - another netlabel, similar in style to 23 Seconds.

Last Saturday night I made myself a nice cup of coffee with eggnog (I swear, there was no rum involved) and settled in to do what looks to be my last podcast of 2010. Things are just going to be too busy in the next couple of weeks, though I MAY end up doing a surprise 'cast next week if I get the free time. You just never know!
I have an announcement to make about a podcast coming up in January 2011, but I'll save that for a separate blog post.
There were some nice highlights this episode, including a really cool MJ cover. Here's the playlist.
And backing music was provided by James Edwards.I said I would do a "Creative Commons News" recap on the blog, but that feature is really quickly turning into new CC releases (which is OKAY). Here are some quick stuff I pulled from various sources.* XYZ by DJ Leq - It's just a single, consisting of the original mix and a shorter version. Kinda catchy! Just released today. * 2010 by Hypnotic Crow - Another dance album, this one is also just plain catchy. It's a full-length album that consists of mainly electronic-based music. While it was released today, it is apparently a compilation of older unreleased tracks by Hypnotic Crow. * Intercontinental Music Lab Goes to War - Intercontinental Music Lab - The name's a mouthful, but the music from this UK outfit is pretty good. I'm not sure how I'd tag it - it's a mix between pop, punk, rock, and alternative rock. I guess "alternative rock" is the best fit here.

I recorded episode 16 of the podcast last night, but only got around to uploading it this morning. So, that's also why the blog post is late. Anyway, the title thankfully does not refer to "I'm never again doing this podcast" but more so "I'm never again singing on the podcast" but you know what they say in An American Tale, never say never!
Side note: I got to 50k this year in NaNoWriMo! Read about it on my other blog, here.
Running time is I think 27:40. A bit short because one of the songs wouldn't play.

I finally got to do the podcast this weekend! Life has been very busy: sudden funeral 8 hours away, a softball tourney this afternoon (B Pool Champs!!), hockey tonight...well there was a lot. I stumbled in a couple of places but I felt the podcast fit together well, and there was some very cool music played. Speaking of which, here's the playlist with artist info
