Re-experience the April 8, 2024 total eclipse of the sun through sound.
Harvard University’s Astronomy Department welcomes those who are blind or have low vision to experience the total eclipse of the sun, through use of the LightSound device which uses a technique called sonification, the process of converting data, in this case light intensity into sound.
The American Council of the Blind and ACB Media are proud to partner with Harvard to broadcast this amazing event where you experience and track through sound the eclipse as it reaches totality at different times from Texas through Vermont. Folks from many different organizations around the country connected their LightSound devices to Zoom as the eclipse reached totality at their location.
The podcast opens with an interview of Allyson Bieryla, Science Center Astronomy Lab and Telescope Manager, Harvard University Astronomer, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory who describes the LightSound Project, and demonstrates and explains the LighhtSound device.

The American Council of the Blind and Supporters Rally to Demand Accessible and Inclusive Currency
ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- On March 10, Harriet Tubman Day, the American Council of the Blind (ACB) and supporters rallied in front of the White House and marched to the U.S. Treasury to highlight the ongoing fight for accessible and inclusive currency for all.Tweet thisACB and supporters rallied at White House to highlight the ongoing fight for accessible and inclusive currency for all. Blind, low vision, and sighted protestors of all ages shout passionately in the rain during Show Me the Money: Marching Together for Accessible and Inclusive Currency on Friday, March 10, 2023 in Washington, DC. The US Treasury is currently redesigning the $20 bill to include a portrait of Harriet Tubman, and a 2008 Federal Court Order says that any new currency redesigns must include accommodations to individuals who are blind or low vision. On Harriet Tubman Day, supporters came together for a rally in front of the White House with one clear demand: we need accessible and inclusive currency now!As a result of this rally, five members of the American Council of the Blind met with representatives of the U.S. Treasury and Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and for the first time, touched the certified tactile feature that will be included as part of the $10 bill redesign in 2026. The U.S. Treasury agreed to quarterly meetings with the American Council of the Blind to provide progress reports on the key milestones as they work toward completing the redesign of the $10 bill by 2026."50 years of advocating and 20 years of litigation have brought us to this momentous occasion," said ACB President Dan Spoone. "We are on the cusp of the United States joining the more than 100 nations whose currency is already accessible to people who are blind and low vision, and the American Council of the Blind remains resolute in our advocacy to help the Biden Administration and the U.S. Treasury finish the job."During the rally, a coalition of disability, women's, and civil rights organizations gathered together to demand a $20 bill redesign that features a portrait of Harriet Tubman and includes accessibility features for people who are blind and low vision. The American Council of the Blind greatly appreciates the support of its members and a diverse set of cross-organizational partners to bring greater awareness to this long-standing and important issue. Our collective voice calls on the United States to express its commitment to the equality of all people by ensuring U.S. paper currency is accessible and inclusive."ACB is grateful for the enduring advocacy of our members and the broad support that we have received from the disability and civil rights communities on this issue, including from the Harriet Tubman family and Women on 20s, as we work to make our currency more accessible and inclusive for everyone," said Clark Rachfal, ACB's Director of Advocacy and Governmental Affairs. The American Council of the Blind is a national member-driven organization representing Americans who are blind and visually impaired. For more than 60 years, ACB has become a leader in national, state, local, and even international advocacy efforts. With 68 affiliates, ACB strives to increase independence, security, equality of opportunity, and to improve the quality of life for all people who are blind and visually impaired. About the Event The inaugural AD Awards Gala celebrates and expands audio description in media. This is a core tenet of the Audio Description Project (ADP), a program of ACB. Proceeds from this event support the ADP, which works each day to further audio description across a wide range of visual media. The Alliance on Aging and Vision Loss (AAVL), a special interest affiliate of the American Council of the Blind (ACB) is developing a project to learn more about the Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) — how they are the same, and how they are different across the country. Since very few of us know what AAAs are and what they do, it is quite possible that many, if not most, AAA’s know very little about… us, and therefore, seniors who are blind or have low vision are not benefitting from the services and programs AAAs administer or fund. As well as finding out more information about what AAAs do, other goals we have in mind are:
How You Can Help We have a questionnaire we hope you will fill out with a AAA Director or knowledgeable staffer, and return the information to us. Then, we hope you will stay in touch with the AAA to help them implement programs and services equitably to the blindness community, and maintain the new relationship . We also hope you will become a liaison between the AAA and the blind/low vision seniors in your communities. You don’t have to do all this alone! The more people you can involve, the better. We’ll Be There With You If there’s one thing the last year has taught us, it is that we can stay in communication — one way or another! Plans for followup information sharing is not finalized yet, but we anticipate periodic get togethers so we can learn from you, and we can all learn from one another. This means sharing AAA services, but it may also mean advocacy training, and other benefits .
You may also wish to download and look at the Participation and Instruction Sheet you can find at https://www.aavl-blind-seniors.org/aavl-AAA-participation-instruction-sheet#main-content before the Community Event. You may also find it helpful to look at the AAA Information sheet which explains a little about what the AAAs are and what they do in a very general way https://www.aavl-blind-seniors.org/aavl-how-AAAs-help-you#main-content. Then, once you have sent in your contact information showing your intention to participate, we will send you the Sample Letter you can personalize before sending it on to the AAA Executive Director in your area, and the questionnaire you will be completing with him/her. Thank you for your interest and efforts on behalf of seniors who are or will be low vision/blind across the country. We look forward to seeing you on April 11.
The AAVL AAA Project Team

Siu’s work as a PhD student has looked at ways to increase access to STEM concepts for people who are blind or visually impaired by investigating how we can leverage other modalities to complement and enhance learning and manipulation of spatial concepts. She will discuss two projects that investigate the use of tactile and auditory modalities to increase access to spatial information motivated by two domains: (1) 3D design and (2) data visualizations.

ACB Radio was once again proud to broadcast live National Braille Press’ “A Million Laughs for Literacy Gala” Thursday beginning at 6:30 PM Eastern, from the Museum of Science Blue Wing in Boston, MA where the full-size Tyrannosaurus rex model oversaw the festivities.
For more than 15 years, the A Million Laughs for Literacy Gala has raised millions to support National Braille Press' Braille Literacy Programs which exist to ensure blind and visually impaired children are given an equal chance to read. Braille typically costs three times more to produce than the same materials in print, but NBP strives to make sure blind individuals do not have to pay more for the same information.
Thursday's Gala features comedian Pat McGann. Pat is a stand-up comedian and television host from Chicago. In 2015, he made his second appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Pat created and hosted the Emmy-nominated television show The Chicago Stand Up Project. He has been invited to The Great American Comedy Festival, Laugh Fest, The Lucille Ball Comedy Festival and has been heard on the nationally-syndicated The Bob and Tom Show as well as seen on AXS-TV's Gotham Comedy Live.
