There’s a primal division happening in our nation. What’s the foundational chasm?

What's the cause of the apparent discontent?

Why are "conservatives" seemingly more acutely purpose-driven to a singular value-system in a way that "liberals" appear to not be? What is the "conservative" value-system? Who are their modern-day role models? What does it mean to be Republican? To be Democrat? What is America's unifying value system? Is there one? Is it unifying -- was it ever meant to be, truly?

Since our last recording there have been heinous acts of mass gun violence perpetrated against Black elders in Buffalo, New York, elementary school children in Uvalde, Texas, as well as instances of indiscriminate neighborhood gun violence across the country.

It's devastating.

In this episode we attempt to understand some of the "how," "why," and "what now."

We previously discussed the state of dating among the straights in episode 76 and now we are deep-diving into the content and lives of probably the biggest and most problematic men in the dating podcasting space: Fresh & Fit, a podcast co-hosted by Myron Gaines and Walter Weekes.

Their podcast and platform is aimed at helping men navigate women, fitness, and finances. They host podcasts and produce content on these topics for YouTube and Patreon, and offer coaching on social media and dating.

While these two have mastered the art of going viral, their perspective on women and dating is kinda myopic and not conducive to helping any man successfully connect with the woman he desires.

We promise balance is most fulfilling.

We're taking a break from our "Uncomfortable Truths" series to discuss a thought politic permeating the news cycle for some time now: CRITICAL RACE THEORY.

Dun dun dun...

What is it? Why are politicians, cable talking heads, and all in-between discussing it so readily? Why is there such backlash? Where did the term come from? Why is it resulting in myriad interpretations and misrepresentations? And more!

Critical race theory is a legal framework developed at Harvard Law School circa late 70s via legal scholars Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Richard Delgado, among others. It uncovers the intersections that exist between racial prejudice and legal systems/policies. Lucky for our loyal listenrs, Shan is a lawyer, so we can break it down.

UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH du jour: You're Probably Not Beautiful

What is beauty? It is the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit; exciting/arousing aesthetic pleasure.

Hm. In today's episode, we level-set and honor the divergent experiences of those across the beauty spectrum. From those who absolutely align with "the beauty standard" to those who meet "the status quo" and to those who are many deviations below what "aesthetically titillates" the masses.

Where you fall on that spectrum absolutely affects your level of desirability, not only in romantic entanglements but also in friendships, in professional opportunities, in your everyday experience receiving smiles on the street, or feeling utterly invisible to everyone with whom you interact.

These intersections of beauty liaise racism, to featurism, to hair texture-ism, to colorism, to what "Black Pillers" of the manosphere have coined as "lookism," to ableism, to fatphobia, to height-ism, and to all in-between.

We're seemingly on pulse as David Brooks of the New York Times recently published an article, "Why is it okay to be mean to the ugly?"

Short answer: It is not. But, hold on tight we're going to explore why it happens! And perhaps, the privileges associated with being "pretty/handsome."

Is it the inherent dimorphism of the hoomans? Is it the lack of empathy on all sides? Is it biological imperatives? Is it lack of incentives? Is it unrealistic expectations? Is it "it is what it is"?

From YouTube dating coaches such as Kevin Samuels to manosphere deep forums like The Red Pill to Twitter clapbacks of "pick mes" and "simps" to the ladies of Reddit indulging Female Dating Strategy threads, the world of dating and attracting a mate has become more convoluted than ever for a plentiful many.

She is currently Researcher in Residence on Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Criminalization at the Barnard Center for Research on Women. George Floyd's life was snubbed out by a heinous act of police brutality in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2020.

We recorded this episode on June 2, 2020, during "Blackout Tuesday," a grassroots expression of solidarity on Instagram.

*UPDATE: In this episode, Morgan praised the rhetoric of Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan. Her acknowledgment, replete understanding, and regard for the movement is more than what’s been expressed by her peers in leadership across the country. But it isn’t enough. It took centuries to establish acute, compounded social inequity. It’ll take more than words to right those wrongs. Redistribute the bountiful budgets from the prison and policing systems and direct the moneys to education, social work, programming, and urban development in the communities this country has chosen to marginalize.

Today's episode we acknowledge collective grief. We discuss what Kobe meant to us and to the world.

For those of us still processing the tragic deaths of Kobe & Gianna Bryant and their friends and teammates who perished with them, you're not alone. And you're not weird. Many are still reeling and will be mourning for some time. It's okay.

Kobe's impact on "the culture" is undeniable. Whether the culture in question is global basketball culture, the culture of diligence & discipline, celebrity culture, NBA culture, Los Angeles culture, Philadelphia culture, Italian League soccer culture, Black culture, sports culture, polyglot culture, competitive culture, fatherhood culture, a culture of excellence, or rape culture, one cannot deny Kobe's presence was resonant.

Since his retirement, Kobe had captured the hearts of the Two Wise Jawns for the loving and supportive role he played in the lives of his four daughters. WE WERE PROMISED REPARATIONS!

Black Americans have been discussing "reparations" amongst themselves since 1865 give or take. "Forty acres and a mule" refers to Special Field Orders No. 15, a promise made by the United States government for agrarian reform to aid formerly enslaved black farmers. Alas, the Reconstruction Era was looking too swell for the recently freed slaves and insert ol' hating Jim Crow.

Of recent, this "special interest" topic has entered the mainstream discourse. Prominent candidates for the 2020 presidential election, such as Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, etc., have incorporated it as part of their speaking points.

Some African Americans in the social sphere have coined the term "ADOS," which stands for "American descendants of slavery," to further cement the message. "Descendents of American slaves" or "DOAS" is an even more explicit descriptor, as it focuses on only the Negro, and not other non-USA slave descendants --sorry Shan, Morg will share some of her reparation crumbs with ya, xoxo.

But we get it. Tariq Nasheed, hoteps, et al were focused on a term that lands better. C'mon branding!

So today we ask what does "reparations" mean in 2019? What does it look like? Who benefits from it? Is it even feasible? Will Ben & Jerry's donate all of their profits to the Blacks? And more!

This episode we discuss all of the uncomfortable data points, science, and realities of our female biology -- In vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, egg donors, surrogacy, how age affects infertility and the ability to carry to term, etc. All of the fun stuff!

We know Meghan Markle is pregnant with her first child at 37. And that R&B singer Amerie had her first recently at 38. And Beyonce had twins at 36. And Serena Williams was also over 35. And JLo, and Janet Jackson, etc..

But plenty of women struggle -- Gabrielle Union (46) for example has had 9 miscarriages, some naturally, some via IVF. And both Beyonce and Serena have been transparent about their complications during pregnancy and delivery. And finally, Kim Kardashian's doctor told her that her second pregnancy (age 35) nearly killed her and that if she wanted a third child she would have to adopt or engage a surrogate.

Morg is African American-born to Philadelphia Negroes - shout out to W.E.B. DuBois! Shan was born in Jamaica to Jamaican parents - wah gwan!

We're both black. Morg's heritage is not culturally Jamaican, however. Shan's heritage is not culturally African-American, however.

We were inspired by an article entitled, "About Blackness, Africanness and When It’s Enough" by Nigerian-born Luvvie Ajayi of Awesomely Luvvie blog and Jesus and Jollof podcast.

This is going to get interesting.

But first! Let's define some terms:

Ethnicity: the fact or state of belonging to a social group/ phenotype that has a common national, cultural tradition.

Heritage: historical/generational context and legacy -- per example, "folklore."

Culture: the customary beliefs, social forms, cuisine, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group.

Nationality: country(ies) of citizenship.

Race: a nebulous concept likely introduced by a eugenics/human biodiversity fanatic who at some point clustered humans by their phenotype -- meaning by similarities in bodily features/characteristics and skin color.

She coined the portmanteau "incel" via her blog "Alana’s Involuntary Celibacy Project."

The blog was centered around her struggles in her romantic life simply being found desirable.

To her chagrin, the state of "involuntary celibacy" resonated with male internet dwellers more than her female peers and so sis was co-opted by the angry and the sexless.

This episode we attempt to unpack the trend of discontent and disarray experienced by the mens dem.

There's a substantial undercurrent building tied to, in our opinion, a masculinity identity crisis, specifically among the straight white males, but in general among all boys and men.

What could be the reasons?

Do boys and men no longer have outlets to explore their masculinity or what that means to them? Was that war? Is it sports? Was it their families depending on them for protection/providership? Are young boys no longer active and disciplined or have the outlets to hone those skills?

Is it technological advancements leading to a contingent of men who have never communicated with peers outside of the comfort of keystrokes from their custom-built gaming computer?

Is it feminism? Specifically feminism ignoring the romantic implications of its tenets? For example many women tending to desire men who are “on her level or higher”? Or many women preferring a tinge of “ruggedness” in men they date? Or many women not truly desiring a man who is 100% candid with his raw emotions?

We are certain of this: We know we don't want wayward boys and men finding "God" in the likes of Jordan Peterson, PUA, The Red Pill, 4Chan, The Manosphere, Roosh V, Neo Nazis, Order of Odin, inner-city gangs, nor Serena Joy.

Today we extend an olive branch and take a stab at empathy before the humans implode.

This episode was inspired by the ruminations of James Earl Jones circa 1960s and Harry Belafonte via Eartha Kitt circa 1950s and; though we didn't cover it in this episode, our good man Quincy Jones referred to his preference of white women as "... yeah, it was freedom man!" in an interview with GQ published January 29th.

It seems the black men ain't down with the Sojourner Truisms black women bear? They get why it is, but don't want it for themselves. Or they're dating white to "stick it to the man." Or they're dating white to access dem resources. Either way we two wise jawns #YeWhisper their perspective... begrudgingly.

We explore the dynamic and pose questions related to the phenomenon of "emotional labor" and why it seems women are the only ones experiencing it.

2016 was a crazy year.

Black millennials finally saw themselves reflected on the silver screen in Atlanta and Insecure.

We learned that America refuses to miss an opportunity to one up the Brits, and that the resilience of the Native spirit is not one to be fuqqed with. #StandingRock

We mourned the lives of those lost in terrible tragedies in Aleppo, France, California, Dallas, and Orlando. We could not ignore the countless black bodies slain by aggressive police force to fever pitch summer 2016. We said too many RIPs for legends like Craig Sager, Gwen Ifill, Fidel Castro, Muhammed Ali, Prince, David Bowie, Alan Thicke, Zsa Zsa Gabor, China Machado, George Michael, and more.

And we personally cancelled about as many living celebs, so much so, we had to stay vigilant about keeping with our prayer candle lit for brother Kanye.

While 2016 felt like hot garbage most of the times, it was low key lit as hell!

It's a special episode of Two Wise Jawns!

Why?

Well for one we recorded on July Fourth which means we really care about ya'll or whatever. We missed a cookout with 80 lbs of smoked chicken for this!

And for two... we have a special guest!!! A real live boy!

Clint Coley, Philadelphia native, L.A. dweller, and comedian extraordinaire joined us to talk that talk!

Basically, he talked at us for an hour. Just like a man... smh. I joke!

We're glad to have gotten his time and insights on our theme du jour, "Men Matter Too."

We discuss what it's like to be a man in 2016 regarding dating, career, expectations, feminism, etc...

We didn't get a chance to fully explore being a black man in 2016. The jawns are all about intersectionality, particularly in light of black male disposability when it comes to excessive and too often murderous police force. Remembering Alton Sterling... and the countless others, we'll have Clint back on to delve even deeper into that unfortunate dynamic of "our" America.

As well as some more serious moments such as terrorism, LGBT acceptance, SCOTUS, gun laws, and Harambe's retribution.
