Happy International Day of the Seafarer!

Get ready to set sail: June 25 is the Day of the Seafarer. Whether your job involves a large quantity of salt water, or not, this day is worth celebrating! Sailing has been in my family for generations and I am very happy to talk about it today with you.

The main transport mode for global trade is ocean shipping (not plane): around 90% of traded goods are carried over the waves. As such, the oceans provide the main transport arteries for global trade. As demand for global freight increases, maritime trade volumes are set to triple to 2050.

Maritime transport forms part of a whole cluster of economic activities that can create economic value added. The sea is still the most cost-effective way to transport goods.

Marine biologists and oceanographers from every country have dedicated their lives to learning more about the ocean depths, and humans from every walk of life keep going to the sea to explore the planet.

If trade by sea were limited in some way, or stopped altogether, there is no way that the global economy would be able to function. In other words, we owe our current ways of life to those who travel the seas.

Seafarers are the pillars of the supply chains around the world. Trade is coming by sea. But because most people are not aware of them, they usually don’t get the support they need.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed extraordinary demands on seafarers, with hundreds of thousands of men and women stranded on ships for months beyond their original contracts, unable to be repatriated due to national travel restrictions.

A similar number of seafarers are unable to join ships and earn a living. This crew change challenge, which has been ongoing for nearly a year, is a real crisis.

Fun activities to do during Happy International Day of the Seafarer:

  • Education: Read a book or watch a movie about life at sea.
  • Charity: Donate to a maritime charity.
  • Local Coast Guard: if you live near a Coast Guard outpost, you might consider dropping in. This is a great opportunity to learn more about what the Coast Guard does.

  1. What is your communication style? (What record to keep and share?)
  2. What are my deadlines to meet your deadlines?
  3. Where is my cash going? Operating activities vs. investment.
  4. How much cash do I need to run my business for 6 months? #emergency fund

  • The importance of local knowledge: etiquette & manners:

Business is about people. There is no shortage of competent and reliable people in the business world and manners can make the difference. Etiquette is the set of conventional rules of personal behavior in polite society. Manners are described as either good manners or as bad manners to indicate to a person whether or not his or her behavior is acceptable to the cultural group. These concepts are vital in life and in business. As times change, so do social norms for personal and professional behavior, but that doesn't mean the basics don’t matter. Performance and quality are important but not exclusively.

  • Attitude and privacy: in public & at home:

With so many people working from home, privacy has taken on an added dimension: the privacy of information from the ordinary, everyday intrusion by family or colleagues. There is, for instance, the loss of privacy when your colleagues overhear you arguing with your family, or see what you read on the bookshelves behind you. Or the loss of privacy when your family can see what’s on your computer or how you handled your calls. Working from home or having a home based business requires a strategy. You have the obligation to protect your private life and at the same time protect your company information.

  • Share a positive attitude:

A positive attitude is something that goes deeper and has an effect beyond surface cheer. Try to connect with people who like their job, have new ideas, and are interested in lots of other things besides work. It’ll make your whole outlook better.

If you want to see your business grow, it is vital that you have your eye on all the components that make up a successful marketing strategy. Pricing is one of them.

Don Draper taught us a lot about marketing and he often used the 7 P’s of marketing. Indeed, back in the 1960s, when marketing men smoked at their desks, a marketing notion was hatched that was so perfect that sixty one years later it is still considered an integral part of any marketing strategy.

The seven Ps of marketing includes product, price, promotion, place, people, process, and physical evidence.

On our episode today, we are going to focus on Pricing. Understanding the connection between the 7 P’s is crucial and it is not recommended to decide on any of them in isolation from the others.

Price:

  • Reputation: charging the “wrong” or a low price will send a wrong signal to your customers
  • Target group: focus on people that are willing and able to pay you
  • Goal: the right price should help you achieve your business goals
  • Income: the right price will help you generate enough income to cover your cost and make a healthy profit

When a business sells merchandise, it might occasionally face returns and refunds. Returns and refunds are part of running any business. The average returns and refunds rate is around 6-8%. In accounting, a sales return represents a refund for a returned item, while a sales allowance represents a partial refund for an item that a customer keeps. This is a contra-revenue account, which means you subtract it from total, or gross, revenue on the income statement.

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about the best way to manage returns and refunds by focusing on your return and refund policy to best serve your customers.

As much as you can, avoid arguing with your customers. Best way to minimize that, is to write a very clear return & refund policy! Company policies say a lot about you and your values. For instance, a product being shipped back and forth might not be cost effective for you, especially for small items. Hence, it is preferable to just refund a customer. Ask the customer why they want to return the product and ask for a picture of it.

The goal here is to focus on having returning customers. A great way to do that after an incident is to give a discount.

Another great way to deal with a defective item would be to suggest to the customers to donate it to a charity or recycle it. You could add a list of charities you are working with in your policy that the customer might be interested in donating the product to.

These are original and personal ways of managing returns and refunds that will always set you up for repeat customers.

“Psychologists are joining forces with religious communities to improve mental health and reduce the stigma of seeking treatment.

Religious leaders have always provided counsel to their constituents. But most aren’t trained to handle mental health disorders. Increasingly, faith-based institutions such as churches, synagogues and mosques are partnering with psychologists to improve the mental health of their congregants.

“There’s more movement happening in this area in the last four or five years than I’ve seen in the last 20,” says Shannon Royce, director of the Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives (also known as the Partnership Center) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”

One of the key lessons we learned from Dunder Mifflin is that your warehouse management is very important!

What is inventory management?

Inventory management is the function of understanding the stock mix of a company and the different demands on that stock.

What type of companies hold inventory?

Manufacturing & merchandising companies: retailers, restaurants, freight and logistics companies, etc. Any company that needs to stock products and goods. Manufacturing companies sell goods to earn revenue while merchandises companies resell goods to earn revenue. (sell vs. resell)

Who in the company is in charge of it?

The purchasing department is responsible for ensuring that the organization maintains the correct level of inventory to build and sell products.

What is the relationship between inventory (Balance Sheet) & COGS (P&L)?

Companies sell inventories to earn a profit. Before inventory is sold, it acts as an asset of the company. When it is sold, the cost converts into an expense, called the cost of goods sold.

Why is inventory an asset?

The intention is to make money out of it within the same year. Hence why it is under “current asset” because it is not supposed to stay long. The intention is to sell it and make money quickly.

Most common types of inventory:

1- Raw materials (Inventory that was purchased to produce goods); Manufacturing companies only

2- Work-in-Progress (Inventory that was in the process as now); Manufacturing companies only

3- Finished goods (inventory that is available to be sold). Manufacturing & merchandising companies

Cost of goods sold (COGS) refers to the direct costs of producing the goods sold by a company.

COGS includes the cost of the materials and labor directly used to create the goods.

COGS excludes indirect expenses, such as distribution costs and sales force costs.

Do all businesses have Cost Of Goods Sold?

No! Many service companies do not have any cost of goods sold at all. COGS is defined as only the cost of inventory items sold during a given period. Not only do service companies have no goods to sell, but purely service companies also do not have inventories.

Operating Expenses vs. COGS

Unlike COGS, operating expenses (OPEX) are expenditures that are not directly tied to the production of goods or services.

What Does the COGS Tell You? Why does it matter?

Knowing a business’ COGS helps evaluate profitability. The number that remains after you subtract COGS from your total revenue is known as your gross profit. The COGS is an important metric on the financial statements. The gross profit is a profitability measure that evaluates how efficient a company is in managing its labor and supplies in the production process. COGS fluctuates greatly depending on the quantity produced.

Let’s use the example of a farm that raises livestock and sells meat.

Costs of Good Sold

  • Animal Feed & Minerals Expense
  • Vet & Medical
  • Replacement Animals
  • USDA Processing Cost
  • Packaging

Operating Expenses

  • Payroll
  • Licenses & Permits
  • Rent & Insurance
  • Marketing
  • Office Expenses

One major challenge I have seen in nonprofit running social enterprises is vocabulary!

When a for-profit "regular" business finds a way to create value for a customer, it has generally found its source of revenue; when a nonprofit finds a way to create value for a beneficiary, it has not identified its economic engine. That is very often a separate step.

Nonprofit that are running social enterprises struggle more with the words to use than understanding the concept in itself. Words have power over mindsets, and your mindset impacts your actions. When the right words are used, the right decisions are made.

The term funding model is different from business model to describe a framework. A business model incorporates choices about the cost structure and value proposition to the beneficiary. A funding model, however, focuses only on the funding, not on the programs and services offered to the beneficiary.

A business model identifies the products or services the business plans to sell, its identified target market, and any anticipated expenses. A business model describes the methods the company will use to generate customers and revenue.

Investing in the right people is also crucial! Many nonprofit have the feeling that they can't afford the right people. Hiring the right people is an essential part of scaling up for every enterprise. The social sector is no different as the skills required to sell, brand, and manage financials are specialized. Talking about business model, revenue and customer, will tremendously help in hiring the right people.

Never overlook the importance of marketing. No matter how good your products or services are, people need to hear about them and marketing is the best way to spread the word and increase sales.

Word of mouth and community are great ways to build buzz and business owners love it because for the most part, it's free. But in reality, building a customer base requires some more upfront investment.

Fixed budgets:

A new business may have to be more careful with their money, the option of having a fixed budget might be better. In your first year, you may simply have to find an amount that you feel you can afford and stick to it. It is also essential to have a marketing plan.

Percentage of revenue:

Most small businesses allocate a percentage of their total revenue to marketing. One of the main advantages of this percentage approach is that the budget is not fixed. It will grow along with revenue, increasing your marketing presence as your business expands.

Reunions are important times! They give people the opportunity to reunite our humanity, renew our spirits, and give comparative meaning to our life’s intended goals and objectives.

Reunions reinforce our common bonds, regenerate our friendships, and often make our personal history richer and more purposeful.

Family reunions are fun: you meet all kinds of relatives, sometimes even relatives you never knew existed.

High school reunions are also very important. Class reunions in general, are great trips down memory lane. It can be challenging to share vague memories with people who look familiar but whose names you have forgotten, but even if the first hugs and handshakes are tentative, it is amazing to see each other again!

Reunions are important and serve a vital purpose! Celebrating life is always beautiful!

Welcome to our 100th Episode and 10th Book Review! Another amazing book that I highly recommend! As I like to do, I'm going to quote the parts I found the most interesting and the most relevant!

Book focus: People that build companies with <$1000, currently making >$50,000 a year, no "special" skills, and have <5 employees.

Focus on bringing value and make it easy for people to pay you: "Value means helping people."

Location is overrated: "a desk is a dangerous place from which to watch the world.” John le Carré

"Focus on different demographics to build business opportunities: traditional demographics: Age, location, sex, gender, race, ethnics but also non traditional demographics: Interest, passion, stills, believes, values = psychographics."

“Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming along” Richard Branson

Be simple when it comes to business plans: 1 page is enough! “Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.” Peter Drucker

"Encourage referrals: Business strategy should be 50% creating & 50% connecting. When you get positive feedback from people who don’t buy your product, you are on the right track! Building relationships will always come back around to help you!"

“Work ON your business not IN IT!”

Youth sports clubs, like other organizations, need money to operate daily. There are many expenses associated with running a club. Likewise, there are plenty of ways for clubs to raise money. Youth sports was a 22-billion-dollar industry in 2020 (even with the pandemic) and is a huge contributor to the economy, both locally and globally.

The location of the clubs will definitely determine the different options and how economical it will be for them to create the revenue they are looking for.

Money is required to make a club run for various reasons: the money is divided up into a few different areas and is essential to run the club. Most clubs, if they are running properly, do make a profit even if they are called non-profit. Nonprofit organizations cannot distribute its profits to any private individual but they do make a profit!

Here are some ways to drive multiple revenue streams year-round:

  • Annual or Monthly Fee (can include insurance, marketing & equipment that is not uniforms)
  • Uniforms

Vending machines are very straightforward businesses and don't require any special skills nor training. These are amazing businesses to consider with family members because it is easy to manage: once installed, a vending machine needs little to no maintenance. Vending machines require no staff, which means no extra wages to pay. It also means you don’t have to pay any other of the other costs associated with employing staff.

Digital/Smart touch screen vending machines cost around $1,000 on the low end and can go as high as $8,000 or even more depending on the technology.

Smart vending machines have tons of benefits: They offer real time usage reporting to vendors which helps them to keep sufficient items in the machine by monitoring inventory all the time. They eliminate many drawbacks of old vending machines accepting coins. Payment options include many solutions such as contactless payment and Apple pay.

Here are below my top 3 vending machine business ideas:

  1. First aid vending machines
  2. Toiletries vending machines
  3. Baby Product vending machines

Business in a Box! More and more companies are turning to non-traditional facilities to house their business operations. Shipping containers in particular can be very cost effective.

Here are 3 ideas for businesses that can work well in this type of space:

  • Coffee Shop: The space could also be used as a coffee shop or café where you serve a variety of beverage options.
  • Restaurant & Meal Prep Service: Another type of food business, you could use the small space you have to create prepared meals that you can sell directly to consumers. Because we talked about food trucks last week, the container could be an amazing addition to your truck for people to eat and dine.
  • Pop-up Shop: Perhaps you want to simply allow other businesses to use your space for special sales, holidays, or events. You could open up a pop-up location in a shipping container.

Volunteering at the Bellevue’s farmers’ market was one of my favorite volunteering experiences I have ever had! I really enjoyed working with the people and the atmosphere was simply amazing! We’ve been talking about profitable businesses a lot in our last episodes, and I wanted to focus our family episode on a great place to sell and a great place to start!

Farmers’ markets are considered as a sustainable business model of networking, building society, trust and encouraging development of rural regions.

In business, location means a lot and sometimes everything! Not only do businesses need to understand where their customer base exists, but they also need to know where their competitors are. Your local farmer’s market will teach you a lot!

It will bring you visibility, customer accessibility and will not cost you much! Farmer’s markets are known to be cost effective. They provide brief periods of intense retail sales with low fixed costs.

Not all farmers market organizations are alike. It is up to you to see what works best with what you are trying to accomplish. Some markets are community-organized; some are farmer-organized; and some are entrepreneurial private businesses. Some lack any organization. Still, even for a short period of time will help you start and give you tons of experience! Local markets bring tons of business opportunities.

The social purpose alone of a market will add a lot of value to your business!

Continuing on our profitable business focus, our episode today is about the food truck industry!

The food truck industry is worth nearly $1 billion and has grown by 7.5% in the past five years, from 2015 to 2020. Currently, there are more than 24,000 food trucks in the U.S. with more than 29,000 people employed in the industry.

The industry is composed of operators that prepare and serve a broad range of cuisine from mobile food trucks on city sidewalks, in parks and at events.

The industry has evolved a lot and quickly with many entrepreneurial food truck operators that have entered the market to cater to changing consumer preferences in favor of gourmet offerings, unique food concepts and also very healthy food. #carnivore #keto #lowcarbs

Key external drivers are: consumer spending, consumer confidence, healthy eating, and urban population.

A food truck is a great opportunity to produce a small themed menu. Whether you have family recipes, or a new creation that your friends rave about, you get the freedom to develop your own menu items. You can also leverage what already exists in other countries and make it better and healthier!

Minimizing risk is a top priority for any business owner. Since there are less startup costs required to start a food truck, it’s a less risky way to get into the restaurant/food industry.

“If it is to be, it is up to me!” William H. Johnson

Part 1: The People

  1. Professors: Develop a passion for learning! You must never stop learning.
  2. Professionals: "Talent imitates, genius steals!" Wisdom is only gained by experience. Learn from professionals and develop your own method.
  3. Mentors: Seek multiple mentors.
  4. Peers: People around you should also have high performance. They should push you to be better!
  5. Producers: People building businesses and creating jobs and opportunities! Producers help others win! Being in proximity to them will help you get opportunities.

Part 2: The Places

  1. The place where you are: Leave no stone unturned. Try every possibility where you are in order to achieve your goal. Law of the Zip code: everything that you need is within your reach.

  3. A place to practice: Convert education into execution. Failure is an essential part of the process. Practice without pressure.
  4. A place to perform & a place to grow: Find a place where you share the same value. A place where you can advance your career.

Part 3: The Practices

You are in control of your life! Having a feeling of not being in control of your lives and not being able to make choices for yourself will negatively affect your mental health.

The idea of feeling empowered and making your own decisions is considered self-determination!

I have seen self-determination playing a major role in my life: both mentally and physically! Constantly having someone making choices for you only provides maintenance from crisis to crisis.

Always focus on finding a balance that works for you!

Self-determination starts with little choices which build the foundation for larger decisions. Starts small with choosing what to eat, what to wear, what hobbies to pursue, and what friends to have they will be better prepared to make big decisions such as where to live, who to live with, where to work, whether or not to obtain a higher education, what treatment to receive, etc.

This builds strength to live your best life possible!

There are businesses that will always be in demand and a moving company falls under that category! People move every day!

Becoming an expert in the communities where you live in will help you a lot! Gaining as much knowledge as possible of your area will play to your advantage! From home moves to apartments, condos, townhouses, and high-rises, try to learn and increase your experience in nearly every moving situation.

Many companies offer services above and beyond moving furniture from one location to another. Each additional service increases your earning potential. Choose a price based on the level of service per customer. Hourly cost for smaller, local moves works as well. When moving longer distances, many companies charge based on mileage and weight.

Companies with higher earnings offer more than basic moving services. If your goal is to expand your business’ profits, consider including many services such as:

  • Packing
  • Unpacking

The familiarity principle is the tendency among human beings to develop a preference for people and things which they see often. For instance, in relationships it tends to be the case that the more often we see someone, the more pleased we are to see that person and the more we like them.

When exposed to something new or unknown most animals exhibit a form of fear or avoidance. This is probably an evolutionary development, things which are new or unknown may very well be predators.

Repeated exposure to certain people will increase our attraction toward them. We are attracted to familiar people because we consider them to be safe and unlikely to cause harm.

We build familiarity with the people with whom you have the most contact! This most important factor is proximity. Similarity is another factor that influences who we form relationships with. We are more likely to become friends or lovers with someone who is similar to us in background, attitudes, and lifestyle. In fact, there is no evidence that opposites attract. Rather, we are attracted to people who are most like us.

Home cooking businesses are probably the oldest and first type of businesses that ever existed!

I’ve seen so many home cooking & baking businesses around me thrive and becoming very successful!

If running your own home cooking business is something you want to do, go for it!

You don’t need to be a certified cook! You don’t need to know everything about opening and running a company. A lot is learned by simply doing!

You also have enough material to start! You are already cooking and eating every day! Start with what you have and grow as you are getting more customers. You absolutely do not need any capital to start with! What you have in your kitchen today is enough!

Packaging is very easy to find online and nutritional labels are very easy to make as well:

Create & Generate Nutrition Labels | Nutritional Label Creator Software | Recipe Costing | Inventory Management | ReciPal

The best way to get your name out there is to sell to family & friends first!

I also love Local Markets! Most of them are amazing with a great community! The best way to turn your hobby into a part-time or even full-time job, is to consider starting with your local farmer’s markets. This is a great way to test the waters, listen to customer feedback and learn more about what products sell the best!

Most markets have a website where you can apply. Otherwise, attend the market and ask to speak to a market manager. Most vendors require you to sell your own handmade products.

The majority of farmers’ markets will not charge any application fees. In general, you should only have to pay for your rental spot!

It’s Game Time!

The board game industry has seen a major shift in recent years. More and more creative individuals have gotten on board with independent game designing and self-publishing.

There are more games to choose from than ever before, yet, consumers still want even more. It’s possible that you can make money designing and selling board games.

Having playtesters is going to be a must! You could have your friends and family test your game (and you should get feedback from as many people as possible) however, it’s probably a good idea to pay some playtesters to find problems with your game and give you their thoughts.

Once your game is ready for production you can sell your design to a production company, or you could produce it yourself. You’ll probably make more money self-producing your game! If you’re hoping to achieve success as a game designer, take your time to test at least 3 game ideas.

Marketing is going to be key! Many board games fail because they aren’t marketed well. There are a lot of marketing strategies out there, but you don’t need something over the top. A website where you can showcase your games should be able to do the job. You can also consider starting a YouTube channel where you could give overviews of your game, host playthroughs, or even give behind the scenes insights into the design of the game. This could also help you make money to support your games through advertiser revenue.

Adjusting to a new lifestyle is not easy for everyone. The anxiety and stress of relocating or sometimes just moving places within the same country can affect your mental health and overall your well-being.

I have been moving places since the age of 2! Sometimes it is about starting over and sometimes it is simply about progressing in your life!

Adapting to a new lifestyle will highly depend on your intention of moving abroad and your overall preparation for it!

Finding a balance between your work and lifestyle is going to be crucial! One of the things I love the most about opening my company and moving to the US is the beautiful time I now have for myself!

Give yourself sufficient time to adjust. Adapting to living overseas should be a gradual process. Don’t push yourself too much when you are in the process of adjusting to a new environment.

Join various social groups to build a strong network. Volunteering is one of my favorite activities!

It is commonly known that exercise can be helpful for your mental health both at home and abroad. Keep your health a priority and make sure to associate yourself with people that think the same way when it comes to staying active!

Don’t expect to settle down immediately when you live overseas – it will take time, so enjoy the process.

Whether you’re trying to gain access to international markets, have a product or service that is more appealing to a foreign market than domestic customers or simply want to take advantage of a new business-friendly environment, there are many reasons for starting a business overseas.

Go where you can easily make money! Capitalist countries are always going to be the best!

Capitalism is an economic system where private entities own the factors of production. The four factors are entrepreneurship, capital goods, natural resources, and labor.

Monetarist economist, Milton Friedman, suggested that democracy can exist only in a capitalistic society.

The United States is mostly capitalist and the U.S. Constitution protects the free market however, it doesn't rank among the 10 countries with the freest markets, according to the Index of Economic Freedom: https://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

Here are the top 10 most capitalist countries:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Singapore
  3. New Zealand
  4. Switzerland
  5. Australia
  6. Ireland
  7. United Kingdom

Businesses play a vital role in any country’s economy. Small to medium-sized businesses alone employ nearly half the working population and account for around 20% of a country’s GDP on average.

After a conflict, war or natural disaster surviving businesses may benefit from massive external aids, or the disappearance of competition, however, they will suffer profound consequences.

There are several reasons why smaller companies with less than 10 employees are able to bounce back more quickly.

  1. Flexibility: Being oriented towards local markets makes small businesses less sensitive to disturbances in infrastructure. Their management system is also far simpler, enabling them to adapt more quickly to changes in the market, and to logistical challenges.
  2. Financial aids: The businesses that were the least dependent on financial aids prior to any crisis, will bounce back with the most ease. Banks suffering from the effects of the crisis will probably favor older/small clients over other businesses.
  3. Sales: Targeting potential customers in your town or region will always pay off more! Local marketing can help you focus in on a specific geographic area that gives more control. Also 85% of business owners depend on word-of-mouth referrals, which shows just how crucial it is to reach customers in your local area.

Private clubs are always going to be relevant and will always exist!

A club is an association of people united by a common interest or goal. A service club, for example, exists for voluntary or charitable activities. There are clubs devoted to hobbies and sports, social activities clubs, political and religious clubs, and so forth.

Historically, clubs have always existed in all countries. Organizations of the sort have existed for many years, as evidenced by Ancient Greek clubs and associations (collegia) in Ancient Rome.

It is uncertain whether the use of the word "club" originated in its meaning of a knot of people, or from the fact that the members "clubbed" together to pay the expenses of their gatherings.

Joining a club enriches your life! Being part of a club/society will help you gain knowledge, communication, and group development among other things! You will feel the change in yourself.

It's the best way to meet people. Being an active member of a club solves a big issue of finding people and networking. The benefit of being a member of a community allows you to learn something along with bonding with people and have fun.

It's one of the best ways to travel! Literally and figuratively! From cultural galas to volunteer trip, you never know what experiences are waiting for you on the other side of the road. The more you participate, the more experience you will gain. Being part of a community provides you with that.

How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie

  1. A person’s name is the sweetest and most important sound in any language

Remember names and pictures! People's name is the most important thing in the world. Learn how to spell it and pronounce it! Always call people by their full name. Why do we build donor walls for nonprofit? Why do we mention names on memorial walls? The power of being acknowledged and recognized! By using someone's name, they will give you total attention. By using a person’s name, you are telling them how important they are to you. It makes them more engaged in the conversation, and also makes you more invested in that person. People are often really proud of their names! Using a person’s name is a bridge to making an impact in their life.

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people

“A man without a smiling face, must not open a shop!” Don't talk, listen to others and focus on them! Ask them questions. Praise a lot! Exclusive focus on the other person. Listen carefully. Encourage others to talk about themselves and talk in terms of the other person’s interests. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely!

  1. Talk about your own mistakes first

Remember your own shortcomings and mistakes before criticizing another person. Make allowances for the person's age and experience level; you can't expect beginners to perform at the same level as experts. When you must criticize someone, admitting your own mistakes humbly can help the person feel more comfortable and less judged. It shows you are human, too, and make mistakes like anyone else. Offer honest praise as well: "Humility and praise ... rightfully used ... will work veritable miracles in human relations."

All humans are inherently biased. It’s part of how our brains are wired. We naturally make snap decisions about people based on things like past experiences, cultural backgrounds, or things we’ve seen on TV or in the news.

Even those of us who pride ourselves on being open-minded fall prey to unconscious bias. Having a bias doesn’t make you a bad person, and not every bias is negative or hurtful. It’s not recognizing biases that can lead to bad decisions at work, in life, and in relationships in general.

Although people have both explicit and implicit biases, the implicit ones are the most concerning because they are the ones we don’t recognize we have.

Not getting a promotion and not being chosen to be captain of a sports team at school are very similar situations. Indeed, much hasn’t changed since childhood. Certain thoughts or perception of ourselves don't automatically disappear in adulthood. Being aware of them is the best way to solve these challenges.

Taking responsibility for your life will change things a lot! The most important aspect of taking responsibility for your life is to acknowledge that your life is your responsibility. You are in charge. No matter how hard you try to blame others for the events of your life, each event is the result of choices you made and are making, that includes your attitude and what you choose to keep in your mind as true because of past experiences!

Avoid blaming others. It’s frustrating when progress stalls or stops. It happens to the best of us. No one is immune. But always focus on being successful, helping others, and loving yourself based on your values!

Aloha & Happy Friday!

On our episode today, we are going to talk about successful aging in the time of COVID-19!

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a great challenge for older people both in terms of the severity of the disease and the negative consequences of social distancing. Why combine positive aging and gardening? Because it's time to get our hands dirty again!

Gardening promotes psychosocial and physical functioning and therefore enhances the quality of life. Gardening participation provides important occupation and activity engagement. Gardening groups offer a context for social interaction and collaboration, which may be particularly important for socially isolated older adults.

Gardening involves planning, planting, watering, and nurturing outdoor ornamental plants, shrubs or fruit plants in a garden, or in pots or containers, but also passive engagement such as wandering through gardens, relaxing in or viewing gardens, and active engagement, such as cultivating plants, mowing lawns, weeding and raking.

Having positive attitudes towards aging creates resilience to health. Having positive self-perceptions of your own aging is an indicator of your well-being. Possessing a positive attitude toward aging will tremendously help your mental health and social engagement!

Agriculture & climate change can be confusing topics to navigate. From scientific jargon to policy to news articles, it can feel like you need a PhD just to understand everything.

As someone who has always cared about agriculture, I’ve often felt intimidated by climate conversations. Do I know enough? Can I communicate my thoughts clearly?

To start, everyone relies on agriculture. A farm is not a forest! Understanding food production and distribution will help you position yourself better in political and social conversations that are inevitable.

Learning more about agriculture will definitely improve your opinion of agricultural work! It will help you better communicate with your customers and bring more awareness on topics that are often misunderstood.

Your customers, and people, in general have many assumptions about what you should do or say to fit in. Communicating clearly your beliefs and your social impact will play a major role in your credibility and customer loyalty!

Loyalty has, over the past decade, become a crucial construct in marketing, and particularly in the burgeoning field of customer relationship management. Your focus should be in making your customers to return.

Lobbying is performed by individuals or groups to pressure governments into policy actions. Lobbying is legally protected and is not the same as bribery. Bribery and lobbying are often conjoined in the public mind. While both seek a favorable outcome, the two remain distinct practices. Bribery is considered an effort to buy power (paying to guarantee a certain result); lobbying is considered an effort to influence power, often by offering contributions. Bribery is illegal, while lobbying is not.

Lobbying provides access to government legislators, acts as an educational tool, and allows individual interests to gain power in numbers. Lobbying is an integral part of a modern participatory government and is legally protected. In the U.S., the right to lobby is protected by both the 1st Amendment and the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995,3 and additionally by the inherent need for participation in our democratic environment.

All kinds of groups hire lobbyists: from corporations and private companies to nonprofits and unions, to try to persuade the government to pass legislation that’s favorable to them.

Lobbying is a complex area, and for those who practice it often involves having sound knowledge of politics, business, communication, and law. At its core, it demands a transparent and ethical framework.

Lobbying is not just for big businesses. Smaller businesses are effecting changes and getting the results they desire.

The most immediate challenge for many companies looking to advance disability inclusion in their workforce is knowing where to start. Hiring people with disabilities need not cost any more than hiring someone without a disability. Accommodations for the majority of people with disabilities cost nothing, especially with the current situation where most people are working from home.

To hire and retain anyone, it is important to hire a person you truly need with skills that you want to invest in.

  1. Write job descriptions with explicit performance requirements
  2. Identify and update your internal processes: help all employees understand the challenges that persons with disabilities face and contribute to solutions
  3. Strengthen the hiring pipeline by engaging with community groups: training programs and opportunities to connect with other employees will help ensure that persons with disabilities develop and succeed. Mentoring and coaching initiatives are also vital lifelines. Persons with disabilities who serve in senior positions should strongly consider becoming mentors or champions — both internally and externally

Nonprofit vs. Not-for Profit vs. For-Profit have different implications for your taxes, corporate governance and business activities.

Whether you decided to start a for-profit, not-for-profit or nonprofit, the first steps for creating your entity are the same. Start by filing for a business entity in the state in which you wish to run your operations. Your business entity might be a corporation, LLC, sole proprietorship or partnership. All of these entities can operate as for-profit, nonprofit or not-for-profit organizations.

Once the entity has been formed, you will apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) with the IRS.

A nonprofit has a tax-exempt status because its mission and purpose are to further a social cause. Nonprofits include hospitals, universities, national charities and foundations. They are required to make their financial and operating information public so that donors can see how their contributions are being used. Nonprofit pays no taxes on any money received through fundraising and donations to a nonprofit are allowed to be deducted from tax return.

Similar to a nonprofit, a not-for-profit is one that does not earn profit for its owners. All money goes right back into running the organization. However, not-for-profits are not required to operate for the benefit of the public good. A not-for-profit can simply serve the goals of its members. A good example is a sports club. Not-for-profit must apply for tax-exempt status from the IRS, and money donated to a not-for-profit cannot be deducted on that person’s tax return.

A for-profit organization operates to make money. Most businesses are for-profits that serve their customers by selling a product or service. The business owner earns an income from the for-profit and may also pay shareholders and investors from the profits.

When you share values together, there is very little you can’t overcome! However, beliefs come and go!

BELIEFS

Beliefs are assumptions we hold to be true. When we use our beliefs to make decisions, it is usually from our past experiences. Beliefs are always contextual.

VALUES

Values are not based on information from the past and they are not contextual. Values are universal. Values are principles, or standards of behavior. Love is a good example of value.

Our values inform our thoughts, words, and actions. Our values are important because they help us to grow and develop. They help us to create the future we want to experience. You often hear, "your past does not matter, does not define you, and is irrelevant" or "everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new"!

Every individual and every organization is involved in making hundreds of decisions every day. The decisions we make are a reflection of our values and beliefs, and they are always directed towards a specific purpose. That purpose is the satisfaction of our individual or collective (organizational) needs.

Building initial rapport is an ideal topic for your sales training, as it helps both new and existing staff find pockets of connection that opens up the prospect for a productive conversation.

1. Provide Value: It is incredibly important to provide value to your prospective clients. Listen! You need to be able to demonstrate that you have the answers to their questions and the solution to their problems. And this doesn’t just mean value to an organization, but to an individual person. Since you won’t always be talking to an organization’s decision makers, you need to give your prospects the information they need to be able to make a case to their boss for why they should purchase your products or services.

2. Provide Strategy: When communicating with a prospect, you can’t just tell them that you have a solution for their problem. You need to understand their specific needs. If you can draw parallels to existing case studies that have been solved for similar requirements, this will not only let them know what you can do, but also provide evidence that you have experience solving problems like the ones they are looking to address.

3. Understand Their Pain: Most people aren’t looking to make change for the sake of making change; they have problems they need to overcome and issues they need to address. Understanding a prospect’s "real" pain points is essential in building rapport with them. Get to know them!

Your company’s mission is much more than just an end-of-year performance review. In an effort to keep employees engaged in the mission, their work and help them grow into leaders within the company, invest in them! And then, they’ll invest in you!

1. Set goals

The key to actively developing employees is to set goals. Make the results of those goals easy to see. Monthly goals are the quickest, easiest way for employees to derive meaning from what they do every day. Revisiting these goals will highlight which ones need to be updated, and ensure that they are still applicable.

2. Offer opportunities for individual growth

Employees want training. People, in general, want to progress in their lives! On average, 63 percent of employees believe learning new skills or receiving special training is most important to advancing their career. Which is true! Providing coaching and development activities throughout the year is an employer’s best bet to create a culture of growth within the workplace. To ensure continuous growth and improve productivity, equip employees with the tools they need to function at peak performance.

3. Hold review meetings

Opt for frequent, informal meetings. Meetings shouldn’t be to only evaluate employees, as that is the aspect of performance reviews that causes the most anxiety. Rather, it should focus on developing employees. Focus on improvement: “What skills would you most like to improve on?” or “What can I do to help you?”

4. Automate the review process

The biggest advantage of implementing technology into the review process is making it so much easier for employees and their managers to track and measure performance year-round.

Starbucks Holds More Cash Than Many Banks!

Fifty one percent of the coffee chain's customers in the U.S. and Canada now pay for their beverages and snacks after loading money onto their Starbuck's card.

With 18.9 million active members in the U.S alone, the coffee chain boasts more customer money on its cards than many banks have in deposits.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the coffee shop chain's U.S. headquarters had $1.5 billion that customers had loaded onto Starbucks gift cards and the mobile app as of the first quarter of 2019, surpassing the amount of cash that major American banks had in their deposits.

These balances can not be withdrawn as cash but only coffee! This amazing business model teaches us a lot about the stunning opportunities we have within mobile payment & social digital media. It is also an amazing way to both meet the needs of customers and reward them!

How Does the Hedgehog Concept Compare to Ikigai?

Ikigai is a Japanese concept, which roughly translates as: “The happiness of always being busy”. It is about what you find meaningful and what makes you happy.

Marc Winn put the term in a Venn-diagram from a TEDTalk on the blue zones. Blue zones are areas in the world where many people live a 100 years or more: "If you know your Ikigai, you live longer & happier".

Ikigai 4 circles:

  • Passion,
  • Vocation,
  • Profession
  • Mission.

Hedgehog Concept 3 circles: (ref. ep.# 56)

  • What you are deeply passionate about,
  • What you can be the best in the world at,
  • What best drives your economic/resource engine.

Both concepts can be adapted from businesses to individuals. Both concepts are ways to approach life in general.

Death in our culture is hidden away. While logically we understand that we will all die someday, it is generally a topic that is uncomfortable, and swept under the rug. Is it appropriate to bring a younger child to a funeral? How different is it to let a teenager have a cellphone and no real relationships supported by the family? How does your lack of real relationships in your childhood affect your adult relationships? Do we only have professionalized way of living? With superficial connections? Early family experience affects later romantic and other relationships. How do we learn to be more patient in our interactions and relationships?

"We find that by engaging with people and listening to them, they are willing to work with you. Localism is about engaging and having a debate. It’s a partnership with the community. It’s about working together."

  1. Engagement: Community engagement is an extremely rewarding experience. It helps businesses connect with people in their local area and get the word out about their work. One of the best ways to grow your business is by leveraging your local community first. You can do this effectively by volunteering at charity events with not-for-profits based in the same region. Doing good always comes back to help your organization.

  2. Communication: Social distancing and other safety measures have severely impacted day-to-day operations for local businesses. Use your site/social media to inform customers. It should be front and center, because everybody wants to know. Are you at the very least keeping your own employees protected? As a local business make COVID-19-related announcements and information easily accessible. Google recommends displaying a banner or popup informing visitors of your business’ status, delays, pick-up or delivery options, etc., so that your customers can proceed with appropriate expectations.

  3. Commitment: Seek and develop relationships with other small businesses. Give fair consideration and opportunity to local communities. Publicize your interest in establishing relationships with local communities and small businesses. Provide information and training on how to do business with you/your business.

"Invest the time to learn! There is no easy answer. Don't stop improving your skills!"

Firing

"Firing is something that you can't avoid. Keeping people that you can't afford is worse. Don't listen to people who don’t live with the consequences of your action. Especially when it is a family business."

Hiring & Training

"Train your people in finance, negotiation and selling. Training is as important as hiring. This is not an option for small companies. Build your own training internally. Stop waiting for emails, calls and phone to ring. Especially if you are building your company. A new company is in constant building all the time. When you are building an organization, there is no organization to design, you need an organization first."

Peacetime CEO vs. wartime CEO

"It is possible to be both. Most management books study companies during their time of peace. As a result very few books will help CEOs during wartime. It takes years to develop the skill sets. If you want someone to succeed, make sure that person feel that way! Help her/him, prepare her/him to succeed! Feedback is not one size fits all! Not all employees will take it the right way! You will never have all the information needed to make a decision. Just make a decision! You are going to make hundreds of decisions. You can’t gather data all the time! Communicate and make sure your employees are executing well and can help you! Talent and skills."

The expressions of gratitude are based on social reciprocity in everyday life and understandings of rights and duties surrounding mutual assistance and collaboration. There is cross-cultural variation to this. Universal tendencies of social reciprocity does not equate to practices of expressing gratitude.

Social reciprocity is a basic element of human organization that involves the mutual exchange of goods, services and support among individuals, allowing individuals to achieve more together. People can expect others to assist them in the achievement of individual goals as well as to collaborate in the achievement of common goals. They can anticipate that others will assist and collaborate in return. This reflects principles of cooperation that have been argued to be at the center of human evolution, including the development of human communication.

If gratitude’s role in the maintenance of social reciprocity in different societies is evidenced by its verbalization (e.g. ‘thank you’), we would expect this to occur frequently in episodes of informal everyday interaction where someone seeks and obtains a good, service or support from another. What has been found instead is that expressions of gratitude in these episodes are remarkably rare, suggesting that social reciprocity relies to a large extent on tacit understandings of people’s rights and duties surrounding mutual assistance and collaboration. At the same time, it has also been found that minor cross-cultural variation, with slightly higher rates in Western European languages, including English, showing that the potentially universal experience of gratitude should not be conflated with culturally variable practices of expressing gratitude. The idea that gratitude’s role in social reciprocity is tied to saying ‘thank you’ appears to be largely based not on systematic empirical observation but on attitudes about politeness in English-speaking society.

The majority of managers struggle with managing others. In a 2011 Berrett-Koehler survey of 150 leaders, 68% of managers confessed they really don’t like being managers.

Being a manager adds a facet to your job that, more likely than not, you were never trained to do.

1. Working with, rather than fighting against

One way to be a successful manager is by capitalizing on your strengths and others. You cannot control other people, yet you are accountable for their output. Getting to know them and focus on working with them instead of fighting against everything they do, will definitely help.

2. Personality assessment

Managing people is not a convenient situation. Understand yourself first. Managing others requires flexing your style. That means meeting others where they’re at. What works for one person may not for another. Learn how to adapt your style to customize how you manage and motivate your team.

3. Sorting out personality conflicts is inevitable

The heightened, personalized attention you pay to your staff will more than pay off. You will be able to manage employees more efficiently and with greater success, all with less effort. You’ll form stronger rapport while increasing your team’s dedication and output.

The Pandemic has changed buying behaviors. In most countries, consumers continue shifting their spending to essentials, while cutting back on most discretionary categories. On our episode today, we are going to talk about what contributes to keeping your customers’ loyalty.

1. Focus on improving customer service

Adopt a proactive approach where you are always available. Especially if this is a new behavior for you! Reach out for feedback, offer helpful tutorials, or just check in. This will improve satisfaction and decrease the fear of not getting heard. Outsourcing this service can be a tempting way to cut costs, but you’ll ultimately pay the difference by devaluing your customer experience. It is better to train your staff rather than outsource.

2. Improve your mobile and web applications

If you don't have a mobile app nor a website, consider investing in one. Leveraging social media to start with is good but eventually you want to have your own platform. You will pay less fees and will be in control of your own products and services.

Having a site or an app will also improve credibility with a broad audience of potential customers.

The precautionary principle refers to the idea that public policies should limit innovations until their creators can prove they will not cause any potential harms or disruptions.

The problem with the precautionary principle is that uncertainty about the future and risks always exists.

Living in constant fear of worst-case scenarios means that best-case scenarios will never come about.

But can the precautionary principle really lead to deaths? Yes, it can. Literally and figuratively!

Advocates of the precautionary principle might believe that doing nothing in the face of uncertainty seems like the safer choice.

However without risk, there can be no reward.

Generally speaking, it is almost never wise to completely prevent experiences that might offer important benefits that are difficult to foresee!

How to learn from MC Donald’s real estate purchases:

  • What is McDonald's best known for?

McDonald's is best known for its hamburgers.

  • How does McDonald's Really Make Money?

Real Estate

Small business owners can really learn from the McDonald's business model to invest in commercial real estate as a way to make an extra income from those who pay rent.

Part of McDonald's long-term success comes the fact that it owns the land and buildings at most of its locations. Today's entrepreneurs can follow the same business model and build wealth by owning their commercial property and becoming landlords themselves.

1. You'll stop paying rent (to other people).

One immediate benefit from buying your commercial property is that you no longer pay rent! Once you own the property, you will be responsible for a monthly mortgage payment, but this money will go toward building your wealth, not a landlord's. Also, your monthly mortgage payments could be less than what they were paying in rent and have a larger and better space.

2. You'll grow an asset.

Commercial buildings can grow in value significantly, particularly if you hold the property for 10-20 years. Commercial real estate ownership is a sound and proven wealth creation strategy.

3. You have the potential for an annuity.

If you sell your business but retain ownership of the building you become a landlord yourself. Whoever buys your business ends up paying you for the value of the business and also pays rent to you. Buying a property now can create an income stream that lasts into and beyond your retirement.

4. You'll have flexibility when the time comes to sell.

When it comes to selling a small business, sometimes it's not that clean and easy, particularly if you want to pass your business down to the next generation of your family. If you own your building and receive regular rent payments as part of the purchase agreement, it will make this financial transition easier and give flexibility to the seller.

"The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." Archilochus of Paros

Hedgehogs have a single grand idea that they apply to everything, while foxes come up with a new idea for every situation.

As per the book “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, here are the 3 key principles of The Hedgehog Concept:

  1. What you are deeply passionate about
  2. What you can be the best in the world at
  3. What best drives your economic/resource engine

Foxes are known to be clever, sly animals but they have way too many different strategies to get what they want. They pursue a range of goals in one go. Hedgehog on the other hand, have one goal in mind and they strive to do it well!

Most people initially favor the Fox, cunning and skillful, but this can have a negative effect on what you are trying to achieve in the long run. You are more likely to be scattered and inconsistent in your work. Hedgehogs are more likely to be winners. They focus on what they are good at and do it well!

Transformations from “good to great” come by a series of good decisions made consistently with a Hedgehog Concept, supremely well executed, accumulating one upon another, over a long period of time.

Think about your company, career, or even life in general, are you a fox or a hedgehog? Do you jump from one idea to the next to achieve a goal? Are you consistent with what you want and work hard on that alone?

Everything in life is a negotiation!

  • Being respected and knowing everything about where the other person is coming from: “she heard me out or he heard me out!”
  • Summarize what the other person is struggling with, first, then make your point!
  • Vision drives decisions: If a person doesn't have a vision of doing business with you, you can’t put it there. “Why” always creates clarity.
  • In the long run, the hardest people to work with are people who haven't thought anything through.
  • People like being in control more than getting what they want. Learn to balance this with vulnerability in your relationships.
  • The power of correction: the other side will always want to correct you to show that they have power. Involuntary response: a desire to sound smarter than to be right. Be careful to not be triggered by people who know this about you and use you to get personal information.

“You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.” — Admiral James Stockdale.

The Stockdale paradox is about stoicism! The Stockdale paradox takes its roots from Epictetus’ Enchiridion.

James Stockdale was a US Navy vice admiral and aviator. He was a prisoner of war for over 7 years in Vietnam. Stockdale was the most senior naval officer held captive in Hanoi, North Vietnam.

The book that saved his life was Epictetus’ “Enchiridion”. For 3 years non stop, Stockdale read Epictetus’ books. These books taught him the importance of autonomy and the freedom of his own mind. Something that no one could never be take away from him!

To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control; we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline.

Stockdale Paradox in business:

On a higher level, and when it comes to business leadership and management, this duality helps to guard against disappointments that will hit you in the business world. Optimism may drive innovation, but that needs to be put in check to help ensure that you're still on this plane of reality and not bumbling naively into something that can't happen.

It's a great mechanism to keep yourself grounded, but also entertain the idea of being incredibly successful in whatever pursuit you're after.

The Stockdale Paradox can help out an organization assess a current situation and plan accordingly to tackle the challenges they come across. It enforces both the idea that you can be positive and believe you will overcome all difficulties while at the same time you are confronting the most brutal facts of your current situation. The latter is what turns people off, because it can be misconstrued as negative or overly pessimistic.

In general, optimists are best suited to lead entrepreneurial organizations. On our episode today we are going to review why both perspectives are valuable.

These natural traits motivate people to take action, different actions, but at least action.

A pessimist tends to focus on safety and security. A pessimist is your best ally because pessimists thrive on fixing errors. For this reason, pessimists can make good operational leaders but will never lead well!

An optimist prefers to think about how they and others can advance and grow. Optimists also have larger social networks, solve problems cooperatively, and are more likely to seek help in difficult situations. To energize an optimist, positive feedback is absolutely essential, because the optimist builds on incremental achievements and a sense of positive movement.

Choose optimists to lead growth activities in your family organization.

As a determined optimist, I do want to share one important finding from my 36 years of field research a.k.a life: Effective long-term planning and investment requires an optimistic approach, with contingency planning by pessimists, because things never go exactly as you want them to.

Level 5 leadership

  • Level 1: Highly capable individual
  • Level 2: Contributing team member
  • Level 3: Competent manager
  • Level 4: Effective leadership
  • Level 5: Humility and will. Ambitious for the cause!

“We have tons of level 5 around us, our problem is not an absence of level 5 in our societies, our problem is the absence of wisdom to put them in a position of responsibility and power!”

First “who” then "what"

“The direction of the bus is not really important. If we get the right people on the bus, the right people on the right seat and the wrong people off the bus, we’ll eventually figure out how to drive it to a great place! If you begin with “who” rather than “what”, you can easily adapt to a changing world! If you have the right people on the bus, the problem to motivate and manage people largely goes away!"

“There is no such thing as an incentive system, there is no such thing as a motivational compensation system, there is instead attraction and retention systems, to keep the self-motivated and self-disciplined people that will produce results because it is who they are!"

“Put your best people on your biggest opportunities, not your biggest problems!”

Technology accelerators

"When used right, technology is a curator of momentum not a creator of momentum! You can not make good use of technology until you know which technology is relevant!"

"Business schools are bombarding people with the importance of technology that is completely wrong!"

The crucial decision is whether a family member or outsider would be the best choice to run your family business!

Whichever type of CEO you ultimately choose, it’s a good idea to develop successor candidates who appreciate your culture, respect your strengths, and who are good at preserving key relationships. But they should also be able to move the organization away from activities and practices that are holding it back, toward those that can grow the assets of the company and revitalize it.

The Family Insider

Family Insiders are the traditional and preferred choices of successors in most family companies. They have the backing of the owners and bring to the job a deep understanding of the company. They understand how things get done in the company. Family Insiders often have difficulty changing the business model mainly because significant changes often require letting some loyal people go.

The Family Outsider

Family Outsiders who make good CEO candidates. These family members have the right values and they respect the strengths of the company but can be aggressive change agents.

The Non-Family Insider

These executives really understand the company’s internal systems and respect its culture. But Non-Family Insiders can have the same difficulty changing the company as Family Insiders.

The Non-Family Outsider

Non-Family Outsiders have the deep skills and experience needed to change and then grow the company while respecting the strengths and culture of the company. They have to get to know the family first! This is the only option that has never been involved with the family.

On our business episode this week we are going to review the 2020 Small Business Problems & Priorities by the National Federation of Independent Business.

Every 4 years, the Problems and Priorities Survey asks small business owners (members of the NFIB) to evaluate 75 issues on a scale of 1 (a critical problem) to 7 (not a problem). The issues are then ranked from top to bottom by their average score.

The cost of health insurance, labor, and taxes remain at the top of the latest 2020 survey. The data reflects small business owners’ views 4 years into one of the largest U.S. economic expansions. This year’s (2020) data was collected PRIOR to the Covid-19 health and economic situation. The survey was published in Feb/March 2020.

The “cost of health insurance” remains the number 1 problem for small businesses, unchanged since 1986.

“Locating qualified employees” moved up in importance from ranking 10th in 2016 to its current 2nd place ranking.

Tax-related issues continue to be a significant problem for small business owners, however, the percent finding them “critical” issues has declined since 2016, certainly due to the passage of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act signed into law by President Donald Trump which amended the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

Our focus today is going to be on the 10 top issues:

  1. Cost of health insurance
  2. locating qualified employees
  3. federal taxes on business income
  4. Property taxes
  5. finding & keeping skilled employees
  6. unreasonable government regulations
  7. state taxes on business income
  8. tax complexity
  9. uncertainty over economic conditions
  10. uncertainty over government actions

  1. The time-based model: This one is pretty common and straightforward. Your rate and scope of work are determined at the outset. You can choose to have an hourly rate or a day rate, which is often referred to as a per diem. Not my favorite but definitely to be considered when starting your consulting company.
  2. The project-based model: My favorite one and what I do 90% of the time! You agree to perform a specific type of work for a predetermined amount of money. Before starting, the details of all deliverables will be agreed upon by both parties. Big advantage is the signed contract. Be careful of clients that keep adding more tasks that weren’t outlined in the original contract. This often happens unintentionally.
  3. The retainer-based model: This involves providing ongoing service over a set period of time. Unlike the project model, this approach doesn’t necessarily involve a specific deliverable. To me, I find it challenging to individually charge for a text that took me 30 seconds to send. Not my favorite but excellent to maintain a relationship with a client.
  4. The consulting firm model: In this situation, you hire freelancers or employees to complete work on your behalf. You still own the relationship with the client, but you have a team that handles some or all of the work. This will allow you to spend more one on one time with clients, while still meeting their needs and provide a wider range of services. You’ll need to be highly skilled at project management to avoid these fiascos. Also, your reputation is on the line so you want to make sure to fully trust your partners.

Imagining that people around us are more like us than they actually are! How can we focus more on honoring the differences in our way of being, thinking and acting?

Something that I've been working on a lot is trying to make as few assumptions as possible!

We very often tend to make up stories about people to blame them instead of focusing on love. Humans are very much “meaning making” machines. Everything we see or hear has to mean something. What if that attitude was about always being certain? What if being certain was about superiority?

"The black belt represents the beginning - the start of a never-ending journey of discipline, work, and the pursuit of an ever-higher standard.”

  1. Relationships: You have new relationships with people everyday. Even if you talk to a person daily and live with them. Everything is new and different every single day! Have the discipline to learn boundaries and respect! Work, family and friends. All relationships are always new!
  2. Ambidexterity: disruptive AND disciplined. Structuring disruption. If you want to be successful, you need to balance disruption and discipline. Teenagers are great examples! Don't stop being one! You can’t move without breaking things!
  3. Manage your growth: Leaders and teams often can't keep up with growth; failing to deliver on goals because they don't have the right resources, processes or infrastructure. Airbnb found itself growing so fast at one point that they consciously decided to slow growth. Hit pause to catch up and question things.

All leaders eventually die and all visionary products and services products become obsolete. Visionary companies survive through multiple leaders and multiple products.

On our book review today, we are going to focus on 3 key ideas out of 9 that the book talks about:

  • Cult-Like cultures - cult-like adherence to the culture

Managing and maintaining your mindset and mental health are proving to be the most essential ingredients to being a successful business owner.

  1. Identify and maximize your strengths: Self-assessment will highlight your people's skill areas you can work on. It is a great place to start. It will help you feel more competent by looking at what you do best. It will motivate you to keep improving.
  2. Always invest in foundational relationships: Relationships will have trials and tribulations! Care for yourself to be able to care for others. Don’t take people for granted. When your journey turns sour and goes south, you’re going to need these special people to be around you because they won't judge or criticize but will be supporters to catch you when you fall and bounce you back.
  3. Dedicate time for personal development and do regular mental health checks: Don't focus on remediation. Focus on prevention. Be proactive and work to increase your self-awareness of what makes you vulnerable.

If necessary, never hesitate to choose a coach, or mentor to work with you. Having qualified and trained professionals will open your eyes to different perspectives and offer you techniques and skills to strengthen your mental toolkit.

The Importance & Value of Business Networking.

Expanding your network can have great value. Today we are going to take a look at how a robust business network can take your confidence and career path to new places.

  1. Visibility: Business world is often more about who you know, not what you know. If people are aware of your expertise and you’ve made an impact on them, guess who they will contact when they need help with something? You.
  2. Resources: No matter what industry you are in, hard times happen. You may lose your job, face an impossible deadline, or come across a problem you don’t have the expertise to handle. During situations like these, a strong network can really pay off. The connections you make could lead to career opportunities or new clients during rough times, give you resources when you face a challenge, and so much more.
  3. New ideas & perspectives: Networking means engaging with all kinds of different people who come from all different backgrounds. You and everyone you meet can bring something unique to the table. Collaborating (or even just talking) can lead to new business ideas, new insights, and so much more. Not only can this help you learn new things, but it can help you avoid mistakes, and make sure you never run out of fresh ideas.

Financial literacy is important because it equips us with the knowledge and skills we need to manage money effectively. Without it, our financial decisions and the actions we take—or don't take—lack a solid foundation for success. Nearly half of Americans (and others) don't expect to have enough money to retire comfortably.

When kids learn financial literacy at an early age, they become less impressionable to the attitudes of money held by the adults around them.

Once kids know proper money management skills, they tend to keep them and use them throughout their lives.

Our new episode this week is part of our "sales process" series.

"Sales & Social isolation" is our topic. Our episode is based on 2 studies from 2008 and 2014 focusing on sales, performance and health.

For all businesses, the sales force is the lifeblood that generates the revenue to stay in business!

There is no business when there is no sales!

1. Workplace isolation: Salespeople are at high risk to experience burnout in their jobs.

2. Salesperson commitment: Sales people hear rejection from the majority of their social interactions. This leads to many engaging in poor diet and health habits, rushing to meetings, that very often explains the high turnover rate.

3. Job performance

As businesses start to slowly open back up across many countries, it’s imperative that companies focus on the mental health of their employees as well as support their physical wellbeing.

One of the best ways for entrepreneurs and startup founders to ensure this happens is to lead the charge themselves. The same way I share self-care practices on many of my episodes, as a leader it is very important to make people comfortable.

The cost of saying or doing nothing: It may involve chronic pain, anxiety and potentially damage work relationships.

Rethink your policies and management style:

Inadequate policies and poor communication will likely impact the overall productivity.

Tell your own story:

Ben Huh, the CEO and founder of Cheezburger, wrote an article about his own struggle with suicidal thoughts after a failed startup experience.

Sean Percival, a co-founder of children’s clothing company Wittlebee, also wrote openly about how the 2013 suicide of a colleague and fellow startup founder impacted his own mental health and encouraged other struggling entrepreneurs to speak up and ask for help.

Friendship is the foundation to a healthy relationship! The best way to achieve that is by being curious and asking questions! Curiosity leads to growth! Asking questions is a uniquely powerful tool for building value in relationships!

Friendship is a combination of affection, loyalty, love, respect, and trust. Building friendships takes time and these combinations need to be consistent. The level of friendship will vary depending on the level of investment.

Customer loyalty: Intention is everything!

Customer service: Shape your business by being helpful. Ask questions. Same as you would do with a friend. You can only help when you understand the person and the issue.

Customer relationship management: Ask specific questions to build the relationship that is best for you and your customers. Just as you would do with a friend.

What to say when people/clients want to talk about politics?

What to say when people/clients want to talk about religion?

On our episode this week, we are going to cover the topic of "social engagement."

The best way to tackle this is first to:

Know your role: why are you part of this conversation and what is your role in it?

  • Supported, loved and heard
  • Is this conversation about trying to change someone's opinion or about acceptance?
  • Is this person essential to me?

Know the person in front of you (as much as possible)

  • What life experience have they lived?
  • What led them to think that way?
  • Fear & emotions

It is always the right time to do what matters to you the most! If opening a business is part of the list, then now is the perfect time!

A situation is what you call it!

1- Now changes every minute

  • Pivotal decisions
  • Positive things about the current situation: working from home, savings, shift of “distractions”

2- Learn and adjust

  • Be courageous, strong and believe in yourself
  • Set a direction & fix your focus

3- Decide your distractions

  • Decide your distractions - it takes a while to realize what matters
  • You are always put somewhere for a reason. People, situations, events, etc.

Allow yourself peace! Stop being so incredibly hard on yourself!

People that practice self-compassion are more resilient. This will leave you better prepare for whatever is coming your way.

1- Finding self-compassion:

Accept the moment and respond to yourself with kindness. This allows you to actually be connected and transform things where you are.

2- Self-kindness vs. self-judgment:

Focus on everything that is going right and don't criticize yourself too much.

3- Mindfulness vs. over-identification:

You are not what you feel. You just feel how you feel.

We can only maintain active and stable social relationships with 150 people! The focus here is the level of intimacy

The 4 circles/categories of relationships are:

  • 5 very close relationships that are generally family or intimate friends,
  • 15 very good friends you can rely on for support,
  • 50 good friends—the kind you might gather together for a birthday party,
  • and the rest casual friends and acquaintances

These groups are fluid, and individuals can move from one circle to the next, or out of the grouping altogether.

In this week's episode, we are going to cover these 3 questions:

  • How does this apply to business?
  • How does this translate to business ideas you want try? is there a limit of ideas to have and people to seek advice from?
  • Is this rule true in today’s world of social media?

Your circle of influence:

The idea behind all of this really is that you design your own life by focusing your time and your energy on things that you can do something about!

The Circle of Influence represents all the things in our lives, both personally & professionally that we have absolute control over. Things like our attitude, body language, choices, things we say, and our behavior would fall within our circle of influence.

Be a proactive person: Proactive people tend to focus on things in their circle of influence, things they can actually do something about

Reactive People focus on the circle of concern. As a result, their circle of influence can shrink.

Habits & Routines

When you're dealing with difficult situations, think to yourself, "Is this in my circle of influence?" And handle it accordingly. Start chain reaction with small actions.

How to market to all 5 generations! EPISODE 10! 🎈🎇✨🎉🎊🎄

1- Defining what a generation is & 5 generations

  • What is a generation?

A group of people with similar social, economical and political issues. A group of people with similar habits.

The length of a generation is determined by the birth of a parent to the birth of a child. In many cases the male-line generations are always longer from father to son, than female-line generations, from mother to daughter.

  • 5 generations

-Traditionalists, born prior to 1946 (75 YO and older)

-Baby Boomers

-Generation X

-Millennials

-Generation Z, born after 1997 (22 YO and younger)

2- Generational marketing

What is generational marketing?

Generational marketing is a marketing approach that uses generational segmentation in marketing communication.

Why is it important?

It allows marketers to target an audience on the basis of their similarities and dissimilarities.

As a business owner, you do not want to alienate some of your customers! Generational differences affect purchase behavior.

3- Collaborating together as suppliers, vendors, and business owners.

Each generation comes with different leadership, communication and career development styles

How important is social media for your business growth?

Social media is one of the channels of sales you can choose to have and is important to understand.

I love social media! For this week's post I have compiled 3 benefits of using social media marketing! I hope you will enjoy this episode where I am explaining more in details the below points:

Partnerships: People with the same direction and want to win with you are easier to find. Similar interests and adding value to each other’s lives.

WW audience: Your followers are your potential customers. Your social media page IS your company. When you have an audience of more than 100 people, make sure to create rules of communications. English is a WW language, but we do not all speak the same English.

Support others: Shares, likes, and comments count! Follow specific hashtags that are related to your business and interact with other people that are already using them.

Book review #1: Crucial conversations

“Crucial conversations” is a business self-help book written by the four co-founders of VitalSmarts: Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler.

The book is about defining what a crucial conversation is and the power of dialogue to transform relationships.

A conversation turns crucial when signs show that people do not feel safe anymore and your own style of communication is under stress.

Fear drives silence. To make an environment safe, recoding silence is essential. Look when safety is at risk.

Do not back away, arguing matters, do not force your opinion on someone, start with how you feel, focus on what YOU want! Do not focus on winning and clarify what you want for YOU!

Stress management & decision making

We live in a world when people keep increasing speed. Yes, people!

If you want your business to function well, please do not look for ways to run faster & better. That is focusing on the wrong path to be more effective. That is the best way to become professionally ineffective & personally burn out.

As a leader of your company, you have to trust that you are not in control of everything.

We all want meaning and purpose in our work! We all want to be appreciated & make impactful contributions to the people around us. Across every layer of management, this concept should be understood to run a company the right way & reduce stress.

Do not forget about your values in your work! Who you are in your personal, private, spiritual world, is the same as in your business. Do not let competition & targets create a fake pressure. These 2 worlds, personal & professional, clash very often!

Place meaning in your workplace as high as it is in your personal life!

Instead of achieving results, focus on serving a purpose!

  • Appreciation

  • Yourself: Appreciate & acknowledge yourself! Regardless of your company size or industry, people come or leave because of you! Appreciating yourself makes you take better decision & hire good people.

  • Your Employees: We've all been employees! What do you like the most about working where you? What don’t you like about it? Your employees think like you!

  • Your Clients: What company do you like buying from the most? What kind of clients are you to them? Mindset: "I will adapt and make it happen!"

  • Your suppliers: Tell your suppliers that you appreciate the collaboration you have! Say what you like about the service/product. Mention the names of individuals who have provided extra help.

  • Stay open & drive revenue: Associate your employee’s best attributes to a revenue target. Always drive results and productivity.

  • Reward process: Compensations are vital: days off, working from home, breaks, promotions, benefits, lunch & vacation tickets, recommendations...

Family businesses are here to stay and thrive!

The family is the oldest human institution that exist, and it is the ideal institution! For this week’s post I have compiled the below points to consider when building your family business and make it a successful one!

¯ Communication: Effective communication is an important characteristic of strong, healthy families. Communication refers to the way verbal and non-verbal information is exchanged between family members. The ability to pay attention to what others are thinking and feeling. In other words, an important part of communication is not just talking, but listening to what others have to say. Communication between genders and the effect of birth rank/birth order in your communication. Many aspects of the role that birth order can play in the development of your personality make sure to be aware of that and communicate your concern early on and to be sure to be heard.

¯ Outsource finance & human resources: A third party, which means a neutral person, will be better positioned to manage the money and help with the performance challenges. A neutral person will also help mediate conflicts or help with conversations in general.

¯ Trust: creating and/or restoring trust in family relationships. If the past you share with your family is not pretty, make sure to voice it. Whatever you feel, make sure to communicate it and to be heard.

¯ Long term vision for the company: The great secret of business families that achieve tremendous wealth and hold onto it for generations is that they persistently promote the entrepreneurial spirit that led to their initial success. A combination of ambition, and the willingness to take calculated risks is essential to the long-term success, particularly in challenging times.

¯ Manage expectations: goals and expectations. You each have to get to know each other and find out what the expectations are early on. Do not assume that you know each other at all just because you all come from the same family!

¯ Roles: set the roles for the position not the person!

o Partnership

o Sales relationship

o Regular employee

¯ Compliments very often and say these words very often: please, thank you and you are welcome!

Sell the way your customers want to buy and not the way you want to sell!

For your sales process to be effective, it should be adaptable to suit different selling situation and customer needs. Design a sales process with your customers in mind!

Here is are 5 areas I suggest you focus on when it comes to your sales process:

  1. Customer profiles: who do you want to work with? Who is your ideal customer?

  2. Budget management: Customer profile will help you narrow down the type of customers you want to work with and reduce wasting time and money on sales meetings.

  3. Sales meetings preparation: how much time to spend in a sales meeting? What questions to ask?

  4. Step into your customer’s shoes: sell the way your customers want to buy! How can you help them? Help your clients incorporating you in what they do.

  5. Offer the best customer experience: People first. Being a people person is a trait! Cultivate your intuition. People always come back when they feel understood and accepted. This is how you create and maintain long-lasting customer relationships.

Business is never as usual! Because it is life! Keep adapting and learning.

Your business reflects you! You attract the kind of clients that you are!

Your business is nothing more than a reflection of who you are. Most business owners are a mixture of entrepreneur, manager, and technician. Business leaders embrace a variety of leadership styles.

While each approach has its pros and cons, what is most important is that the leader establishes the focus in the company.

Here are the 5 aspects of a company that I have selected for today’s post:

  1. Money: your spending habits

  2. Language: tone of voice and words

  3. Attitude: solution mindset

  4. New people, new clients: create new opportunities all the time

  5. What you focus on: winning mindset
