We want to offer you some much needed clarity on Brexit by bringing in the most straight-talking experts from all fields, as well as normal people from all walks of life and from both sides of the issue, to document a snapshot of public opinion about this generation-defining issue.
With the Tories moving ever more to the right while Labour moves left, there has been a lot of talk about whether the UK needs a new party, our answer to Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche!.
Renew Britain wants to be that party. Founded in 2017, it hopes to occupy the abandoned centre ground in UK politics and to represent all those who feel like picking between red and blue is like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
But what exactly does the party stand for, what are it’s chances of success?
We talked to James Torrance about how he went from being an accountant to an independent candidate in the 2017 general election to the co-founder of Renew and about why he wanted to found a new party in the first place.
Of course, we also discuss the ever-present elephant in the room: Brexit. James ran as an anti-Brexit candidate and stopping Brexit is one of Renew’s core goals. But why and how do they plan to go about it?
One of the key issues in the Brexit negotiations – and one of the three highly contested matters to be put on the table this far – has been citizens rights.
But all too often, both the media and politicians talk predominantly about EU citizens living in the UK while completely sidelining the fate of Brits living abroad.
For today’s podcast we brought on Karen O’Reilly, a Sociologist and research dellow at Goldsmiths University to shed some light on the forgotten side of this coin. She is part of the Brexpats project which examines the issues of freedom of movement, citizenship and Brexit in the lives of Britons resident in the European Union.
We already talked to Karen’s colleague Michaela for episode 89 back in July about the initial response of Brits in France. We thought it was time to check in with the project and talk to Karen in the wake of her field trip to Spain about how expats are feeling about the state of the negotiations this far, how they have progressed and what, to them, would be the ideal outcome.
The Remain campaign pinned all it's hopes on the intimidating power of statistics, assuming they would scare people into staying. But project fear failed. So what's the alternative for the Remainers that are staunchly continuing to advocate for a more europhilic Britain? The answer, according to artist and activist Madeleina Kay, is project fun. We talk to the 23-year-old about dressing up as EU Supergirl at a Brussels press conference and creating such catchy tunes as "Strong and Stable My Arse," all with the aim of bringing about a second referendum.

The last time we checked in with youth lobbying group Undivided it was for Episode 12 of the podcast, and fresh from the result of the EU referendum they were crowdsourcing a manifesto to take to parliament to outline the key Brexit issues for young people. Henry Bolton is the new leader of UKIP and faces a fascinating challenge, needing to realign and strategise a party on the brink of electoral irrelevance when it loses its MEPs in 2019.

Last week the EU (Withdrawal) Bill passed its second reading. A report by the House of Commons library has predicted the bill is likely to be "one of the largest legislative projects ever undertaken in the UK." Swathes of UK law "will no longer work" on exit, for example because they refer to EU institutions.
There are believed to be 12,000 EU regulations (one type of EU law) in force, while Parliament has passed 7,900 statutory instruments implementing EU legislation and 186 acts which incorporate a degree of EU influence.
Oli Dugmore spoke to Michael Tscherny, a partner in a Brussels based EU affairs consultancy. A former journalist and EU official, he was spokesperson and adviser to Mario Monti.
A German national, he is fluent in English and French as well as having a basic knowledge of Dutch and Italian and can understand Spanish and Portuguese.

That is the message from Blondel Cluff, the representative of the government of Anguilla to the UK and European Union, who has grave concerns over the human cost of a hard Brexit to the British dependency. Blondel joins Tim to explain why a fiercely British Anguilla needs to be moved up the priorities in Westminster or risk desperate healthcare conditions - including a shortage of drinking water - on leaving the EU. The #Brexit podcast team had a rare evening out to watch Rob Drummond's new one-man show that tries to make us reflect on how we deal with differing viewpoints (spot the #Brexit link!) But rather than just putting their feet up and nodding off for an hour in the National Theatre, Jen and Tim were invited to take part by making a lot of morally-challenging Yes/No decisions via an electronic handset. As an exercise in accepting the views of others - or, at least, not dismissing them wholesale - it was a fine evening's education, all told through Drummond's sobering experience of becoming highly politicised by a radical socialist beekeeper. We’ve all heard the news. Since last year’s referendum, the UK has become a more hostile environment for people from ethnic minority backgrounds, with the number of hate crimes soaring by 41 per cent. Of course, there are various levels and nuances to this story so for today’s episode we are taking a deep dive into the issue with help from Priya Minhas, a co-author of the Opinium Multicultural Britain report, as well as Adam Drummond, Opinium’s senior research manager.
We discuss whether white Briton’s too are aware of this increase in racially motivated attacks, how well integrated the UK is and how this is perceived differently by different social groups, and whether long-term trends of immigrant communities moving to the countryside will have a positive effect on integration going forward.

The repeal bill to transfer European Union legislation into British statute was published last week as the government finally started dotting the i and crossing the t of Brexit. While transferring reams of European law back to British rule is a mighty task, it would have been smoother if all parties were in agreement. But as with all things Brexit, that is far from the case. Tim invited Henry Newman from Open Europe back on the podcast to explain the repeal bill process and set out the numerous challenges the government may face, be they from pro-remain MPs looking for a softer Brexit, or the Scottish Parliament and Welsh assemblies keen to see devolved powers not returning to Westminster. It might be No 1 on the the UK's #Brexit wishlist, but while Britain furiously debates whether a bad trade deal is worse than no deal with Europe, the continent's leading economic powerhouse is not really bothered.That's the view of Munich-based Katinka Barysch, a political researcher at financial service company Allianz. It might seem strange that with Germany exporting €86 billion worth of goods to the UK, chancellor Angela Merkel would not be under more pressure from the manufacturing sector to stay on good terms with Britain. There's a ruck over the Rock. Despite being the most pro remain voting area in last year's EU Referendum (95.9%), Gibraltar's future hadn't been much debated in the pre-negotiation posturing. That all changed on Friday, when EU guidelines announced no trade deals would be finalised over the peninsula without a bilateral agreement between Spain and Britain. This lit the the blue touch paper and sparked Tory Lord Michael Howard into announcing that Britain would defend its territory with the same passion as Margaret Thatcher's government had with the Falklands in 1982. And when Tim spoke to Joe Duggan from Spain's biggest ex-pat newspaper The Olive Press for this episode, tensions showed no signs easing (a Spanish gunboat was chased out of territorial waters by the Royal Navy prior to the call). Tim enjoyed a rare night out at the National Theatre to watch the new play about #Brexit, My Country; a work in progress. Directed by Rufus Norris and written by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, it's a play with a difference, using the transcripts from hundreds of members of the public who were asked what they thought about a changing Britain and its relationship with the European Union. The role of British universities as places for building and nurturing multicultural communities might be at a risk as a result of Brexit. Canada has recently overtaken the UK as the most desirable destination for EU students, and the number of those applying for early deadline courses via UCAS has dropped by nine per cent. And it doesn’t look much different for the teaching staff as the University and College Union found that 76 per cent of EU academics working in Britain are now more likely to consider leaving the country and a third of them already know of fellow academics leaving the UK. To get some insight into how universities, their students and staff are feeling about this we brought on Sally Hunt, who’s the general secretary of the UCU. Only 43% of 18-24 year olds voted in the 2015 general election. In June’s EU Referendum, that was up to 64%. Young people are becoming more engaged with politics and in this episode Tim and Jen caught up with two leading the charge, Charlotte Gerade and Joe Porter. The pair are two of the co-leaders of lobby group Undivided, which is collating the biggest concerns from 1,000,000 13-30 year olds across the country to come up with a 10-point manifesto to take to parliament.

It is not often that a UK citizen decides to sue their government, but that is exactly what former lawyer and fund manager Gina Miller is doing. After already shaking up the investment scene with her company SCM and the True and Fair Foundation, both of which seek to combat hidden charges in the industry, she is now taking on the legal process surrounding Article 50. In a High Court lawsuit set to begin on October 13, she will argue that it would be illegal to set the process of leaving the EU into motion by the prime minister’s royal prerogative rather than through a Parliamentary vote. With just a few more days to go before the case's starting shot, Gina talks to Jen about why this is not about stopping Brexit but about getting legal certainty and why Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband's recent call for a Parliamentary vote has muddied her case.
