This is the start of the episodes where Don will explore and explain his motivations and interpretations of the poems. I believe it's time that the back story and the analysis of a mind more than half a century removed from his own writings be included in the production. I will endeavor to include such insight in all future episodes.
Seriously, thank you so much for listening. I can't believe the feedback I've received from these postings, and the overflowing love you all have for my grandfather's poetry. It is so meaningful to hear from each and every one of you who finds his words to be powerful and illuminating in your own life. Everybody who listens to these works has my unending gratitude.
Yours, Spencer.

This is Music and Poetry, episode 23 - Intimacy. The title speaks for itself, really. Don explores how man and woman, or really any two people who love each other, share a common space through personal intimacy. It's a complex, possibly heart wrenching thing, that is balanced on the satisfaction of two individuals, battling against time and circumstances that will inevitably seek to tear the pair apart. The music played by myself, Spencer Hutchinson, was composed and played in a free-flow where I envisioned my own experiences with intimacy and loss. I found the balance between sad tones and happy, hopeful tones accurately reflects how I feel when I remember the passion I felt, and the pain of loss when things did not work out like I hoped. I hope you enjoy the poem and music today. Thank you so much for listening.
This is Music and Poetry, episode 22 - Horse and Barn. This poem explores the power of formative experiences for young people, specifically involving the interaction of a young mind with horses. Don explores the concept of finding identity through a relationship with a powerful animal, especially regarding young women and horses. He touches on the experience of young men with these majestic animals, but holds that the experience is wholly different for men and women. Women, he concludes, find nurturing tendencies in the animal. Men find an expression of their inner strength and growing power in the animal. These two explorations of man and horse find their way into the poem. We hope you enjoy it!
This is Music and Poetry, episode 21 - Two Homes. Many times we find ourselves between two places we hold as important. This might be your parents and your own home as you become parents yourselves. This might be the comfort you once found in the safety of your childhood home, now found in the arms of a compassionate lover. Maybe it's the safety of your career, and those around you who have become like family. Whatever the case, we many times have two homes, and the balance of that in our minds can be difficult at times. It's the natural progression of things, and Don's poem explores its depth.
This is Music and Poetry, episode 21 - Stages. In life, we go through processes that can be clearly defined by a beginning and an end. These stages present both loss and opportunity for us, giving us a chance to grow and become more powerful, and a chance to mourn what has passed. These stages are an important part of life.
This is Music and Poetry, episode 19 - Habitat. The poem deals with the period in time where Don Hutchinson was at work on the SkyLab project, where we as Americans were trying to set up the first habitat for people to live in while in space. Don explores the concept of habitat, and what is needed for a living space for people.
This is Music and Poetry, episode 17 - Inherence. There is an interesting difference that exists in words that have similar roots. There is inherence, adherence, and coherence. Each word has its own connotation, with inherence being related to what lies naturally underneath the outer exterior. The music today is simple in its form, but came about as I thought of the poem. I hope you enjoy it!
This is Music and Poetry, episode 16 - Self-Fashioning. This poem's title is rather self-explanatory, and the accompanying music has a building momentum that seemed to fit the theme.
This is Music and Poetry, episode 15 - The Inward Turn. This poem has to do with one's choice or drive to turn inward on one's self, and to analyze the inner world each of us has within us. This is usually projected into the outer world through creative projects like music, poetry, conversation, or any other outlet we have as people.
This is Music and Poetry, Episode 13 - Your Love. This episode features an analysis of the poem from Don Hutchinson's wife, Dori Hutchinson, read by Don Hutchinson.
This is Music and Poetry episode 11 - My Love. Don explores what it means to love another as a man, and the stages of love as difficulties and challenges make themselves known in a relationship. My Love is three separate poems, each with the same title. Spencer plays a short piece after each poem, attempting to capture the mood of each in music.
This is Music and Poetry episode 10 - A Life. Don explores what it means to live a life, and how he has perceived his own life in time.
This is Music and Poetry episode 9 - Ergodontics. "Ergodontics" is a word coined by Don Hutchinson. The notion of "Ergodontic work" came about as an attempt in trying to describe work that a person does with genuine interest. "Ergo" relates to the production and the relation of the person to the work. "Dontic," which means gifts, seemed to compose the qualities of respect for the work, care, knowledge, interest, and responsibility. As workers, we often proceed with interest, but with no clear idea of what we are doing, how to do it, or why. A work process that is not interesting may include systematic distortions that have gained legitimacy. But Ergodontic work, or work that has the workers genuinely interested in the process, seems to be the goal for us all - not only from the management/leadership side of the equation, but also from the prospective of the worker.
I hope you enjoy the poem and the music! -SH
