The world tells us about freedom from many different angles. It’s a desire that we as human beings have. While physical freedom is often obtainable, there is still one that is hardest to recognize and accept and that is internal bondage. This brings us to the question: what is true freedom?
Paul reminds us in Galatians that as believers, our freedom in Christ has set us free; therefore, we are free to live for the things of God.
Galatians 5:1 says “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Our independence as people is based upon our dependence on Jesus Christ. For those who have experienced this freedom, are we truly living it out?

THE GOSPEL IS THE GOOD NEWS CONCERNING JESUS CHRIST AND THE WAY OF SALVATION THROUGH HIS DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION.
Jesus plus nothing. There is nothing to add to this equation and cause Gospel confusion.
COUNTERFEIT = MADE IN EXACT IMITATION OF SOMETHING VALUABLE OR IMPORTANT WITH THE INTENTION TO DECEIVE OR DEFRAUD.
We preach and must preach to ourselves the gospel over and over again, so when we go out into the real world, we can pick up and out a counterfeit.
There are three Gospels rooted in American principles that are not wrong until they are added to the simple gospel equation:
- The Performance Gospel
Believing you have to do something to earn or maintain
God’s favor.
Ephesians 2:8-9
- The Prosperity Gospel
Believing that because God is good, his children will prosper in health, wealth and
happiness.
2 Corinthians 5:15
- The Political Gospel
Believing that politics are more important or have replaced Jesus as Savior and Messiah.
Philippians 3:18-20
OUR INDEPENDENCE IS BASED UPON OUR DEPENDENCE ON JESUS
Are we living free? Freedom is knowing, loving, and believing the gospel and living it out!

Do you want to learn how to live a meaningful life? Or do you wonder if life is meaningless—chasing after the wind?
The ancient Hebrew King Solomon asked these same questions. He was the son of David, Israel’s most famous king. And though David was known as a man with a heart for God, Solomon’s life went in a different direction.
Solomon had wisdom, wealth, and fame but made some poor choices. He chased after wealth, power, and women. When he reached the end of his life, he wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, recounting how much of it he found to be meaningless—nothing more than a vapor.
But he also decided what DOES make life meaningful—fearing God and keeping His commandments.
In this message, join Ron Cathcart as he discusses the book of Ecclesiastes, what Solomon concluded was a meaningless life, and what he believed made for a meaningful life.
HOW TO HAVE A MEANINGFUL LIFE
- Don’t spend your life chasing after the wrong things.
Ecclesiastes 2:10,11.
- Get yourself some good friends.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12.
- There’s a difference between religion and a relationship with God.
Ecclesiastes 5:1–2.
- Have a proper relationship with money.
Ecclesiastes 5:18.
- Have a good name.
Ecclesiastes 7:1.
- Learn from the hard stuff.
Ecclesiastes 6:1–3.
- Take sin seriously.
Ecclesiastes 9:18, 10:1.
- Honor God in your youth.
Ecclesiastes 11:9.
- Life passes quickly, so do the right things.
Ecclesiastes 12:1.
Here’s how Solomon sums up his life’s wisdom: “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind” (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14).

THE PROMISE OF SALVATION

THE PROMISE OF HEAVEN
Jesus assures us His death does not end the way we think it will. He will leave to go and prepare a place for us. By understanding the temporary nature of our earthly existence, we can find peace and prepare for the glory that awaits us. By placing our faith in Him, all of eternity will be spent in Heaven with Jesus.

The fear of the Lord leads us to a heart posture of humility. We must be quiet enough and humble enough to receive God’s answers. It is knowing God is on the throne and we are not; that we are not who we used to be but not yet who we want to be.

In this message, join Pastor Nick as we examine Ecclesiastes 3 and how King Solomon reflects on the nature of time and its perceived meaning—or lack thereof—in our lives. Solomon writes about the various seasons we encounter, emphasizing that every activity under the sun has its time. While his initial observations might feel bleak or futile, he ultimately points us towards a greater understanding.

The Predicament:

Solomon begins by describing the “predicament” we all face with time. He lists 14 pairs of opposites (e.g., a time to be born, and a time to die) to illustrate that life’s experiences often seem to cancel each other out, making our efforts seem meaningless (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).
Ecclesiastes 3:1 - “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

The Proper Perspective:
-
However, Solomon shifts to offer a “proper perspective.” He acknowledges that while time can seem repetitive and mundane, God has made everything beautiful in its time and has set eternity in the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). This eternal perspective brings purpose and hope into our daily lives.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 – He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Habakkuk 2:3 – “This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”
C.S. Lewis – “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

The Petition:

Finally, Solomon gives us two practical applications:

Enjoy life. Embrace the simple joys and blessings as a gift from God (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13).

Fear and trust God. Recognize His sovereignty and control over all seasons and moments, cultivating a deep reverence and trust in His plan (Ecclesiastes 3:14-15).
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 - “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.”
Ecclesiastes 14-15 – “I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him. Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God will call the past to account.”
God is already in your tomorrow!

IT IS POSSIBLE TO LIVE A MEANINGLESS LIFE?
We can spend our whole life chasing after things that all come to an end and we cannot take with us. Solomon gets to the end of his life, surveys everything he has achieved, and discovers it is meaningless.

We can have a mistaken belief that God will pay attention to us if we are good enough or do good things.
The good news is that we have the gift of God’s grace. We cannot earn or work to achieve it but simply receive it. God has provided a way of salvation. The Apostle Paul testifies in Acts telling this most important story of the birth, death, burial, and resurrection of one life:
“Now brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance; that Christ died for our sins according to Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters a the same time, most of who are still living, though some have fallen asleep Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to the one abnormally born.” 1 Corinthians 15:1-8

It’s a question most want to ask, “what happens when I die and where exactly am I going?”
A destination is referred to as the place to which a person or thing travels or is sent. There will be a day we all step into a final resting place and in preparation of that moment, we will need to know the truth of where we are headed.
The reality is there is life after death. The truth is our destiny is one with God or one without God.

“TWO POSSIBLE DESTINATIONS”
The Bible makes a clear distinction between those who have eternal life and those who do not.
“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. “1 John 5:12

Peter in the Bible was part of Jesus’ inner circle and one of the Bible’s most consequential figures. But Peter failed—big time. Here’s how Jesus helped him recover and will do the same for us.

“GO TELL THE DISCIPLES AND PETER”
When Jesus rose from the dead, an angel appeared with a message to three of Jesus’ followers. He told them Jesus had risen from the dead, then said:
“But go, tell his disciples AND PETER, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you’ ” [emphasis added].
Why would the angel say, “And Peter?” Peter was one of the disciples, after all. But maybe Peter needed special attention because he had failed by denying Jesus three times just a few days earlier.
In this message from Pastor Nick Tallo, we learn from Peter’s story that failure is not fatal or life-defining but that Jesus can restore us when we humble ourselves and repent.

- GOD CALLED YOU IN SPITE OF YOUR FAILURES.
God knows everything, past and present. He knew Peter would fail, yet Jesus made him a disciple anyway. God knows our failures and has chosen to love and save us anyway.
Max Lucado says it well: “You are never more saved or less saved than the moment you were first saved.”

- GOD LOVES YOU IN SPITE OF YOUR FAILURES.
After Jesus rose from the dead, he visited his disciples several times, showing them all (including Peter) that He still loved them. No matter who we are or how we’ve failed, NOTHING can separate us from God’s love!
See John 21: 1–14 and Romans 8:38–39.
- GOD WANTS TO USE YOU IN SPITE OF YOUR FAILURES.
Peter had a chance to reconcile with Jesus, and at that moment, Jesus called Peter to a life of service, saying, “Feed my sheep.” We have the same opportunity to respond to God’s call to us, no matter how we’ve failed in the past.

Today, we're celebrating 25 years as God's church called 2Rivers! Our Executive Pastor, Nick Tallo, and Director of Ministry, Sarah Good, sit down with Pastor Ron and Debi to discuss 2Rivers' early days and some of their favorite moments. Ron also shares his vision for the next 25 years, to ensure Jesus remains the lead story at 2Rivers Church.
This is a service with some tears, some laughter, and a lot of thankfulness to God for what He’s done.
Debi shared her favorite verse, Romans 1:11–12, a key verse for the Cathcarts and our church’s ministry: “I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.”
Ron shared Ephesians 3:20–21: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

WHO IS 2RIVERS CHURCH?
2Rivers Church is a non-denominational congregation in O'Fallon, MO, pastored by Ron Cathcart. We exist to help people become passionate followers of Jesus.
WHEN WAS 2RIVERS CHURCH FOUNDED?
2Rivers Church was founded in April 1999 by Ron Cathcart. We started as a portable church, meeting at Bryan Middle School, then Timberland High School. Our current and permanent home is at 88 Hubble Drive in O’Fallon, MO.
WHY WAS 2RIVERS CHURCH FOUNDED?
Ron Cathcart is a St. Louis-area native. He served on the staff of a few churches and as the lead pastor of one other, but dreamed of a new way to "do church." He and Debi prayed and launched the church in April 1999.
WHAT WAS THE VISION FOR 2RIVERS CHURCH WHEN IT WAS FOUNDED?
When Pastor Ron dedicated his life to God, he saw how Jesus changed every part of his life. He and Debi dreamed of a congregation that would help people become passionate followers of Jesus.
HOW DID 2RIVERS CHURCH GET ITS NAME?
When Ron Cathcart and his launch team tried to come up with a name, they tried several and weren't satisfied. But Ron got an advertisement mailer from a local business named 2Rivers. He liked it, and the name stuck!

Have you ever wondered about God’s will for your life? Have you questioned whether you are truly following His path? If you have, you're not alone.
Sometimes God’s will can feel confusing, abstract, or mysterious, but Pastor Nick breaks down understanding God’s will into two parts: The sovereign will of God and the revealed will of God.
What is God’s Sovereign Will?
The word Sovereign = Having supreme power or authority.
We believe God created the entire universe and set plans and laws of the universe into motion from the very beginning. The fact that our universe has laws and order are dictated by the one who created and is large and in charge of all things.
Sovereign Will = God’s secret plan which controls the outcome of all matters in the universe.
What is God’s Revealed will?
God also reveals Himself personally throughout history and has made known His will for humankind and for each of us known in specific, knowable ways.
Deuteronomy 29:29 – “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”
Ephesians 5:17 – “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
How do we figure out God’s Will?
Through the Word of God
Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Through the Spirit of God
Psalm 143:10 – “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
John 16:13a – “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
Through the People of God
Proverbs 12:15 – “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”
Proverbs 19:20 – “Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life.
The Will of God will never contradict the Word of God!
What do we do once we know God’s Will?
James 1:22 – “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
Acts 20:22-24 – “ And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”
Acts 21:12-14 – “When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Timothy 2:4 – “[God] desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Why is there so much evil and suffering in the world if God is both all powerful and good?
Evil is defined as that which is morally wrong or sinful; something that brings sorrow, distress or calamity. It can also be seen and known as the opposite of good.
In the beginning of the world’s creation, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good! So why does an all-powerful, good God let evil and suffering happen? Afterall, if God wanted to stop it He could.
The question of the evil and suffering we experience and a supposedly all powerful and all good & loving God is a real one we all face.

EVIL AND SUFFERING ARE PART OF THE BROKEN WORLD WE LIVE IN
In the beginning, God gave Adam and Eve a choice and people have been making wrong choices ever since. Evil exists in our world because God’s creatures rebelled and continue to do so. Evil will persist until the return of Jesus.

THE PRESENCE OF EVIL AND SUFFERING DOES NOT MEAN GOD IS NOT ALL POWERFUL
Atheists would say, “God is not taking care of it, He must not be all powerful.” In the story of Job, God never answers the question of why but establishes His ever present power.

THE PRESENCE OF EVIL AND SUFFERING DOES NOT MEAN GOD IS NOT GOOD AND LOVING
When bad things happen, it does not change the fact that God loves us. God’s own son endured pain and suffering on our behalf. Jesus was a suffering servant and by His wounds we are healed. He who knew no sin was laid out on the cross.

GOD IS ALWAYS AT WORK, EVEN IN THE MIDST OF PAIN AND SUFFERING
We don’t always have the answers but this helps us understand the concept. There may be many things happening, but God is our strength and portion forever.

WHEN WE HAVE SUFFERED, WE CAN HELP OTHERS WHO ARE SUFFERING
Sometimes our suffering can lead to a great calling to comfort for others who find themselves on the same difficult path. Our suffering can help others who are suffering.

SUFFERING MATURES US
Deeper intimacy is gained with God during the hard times. Our level of maturity and faith will increase during the hard times.

WE MUST VIEW PAIN AND SUFFERING IN LIGHT OF ETERNITY
We measure life on a human timeline. This life is short on the map of eternity. Some day, Jesus will return and if he never did another thing, He’s done enough!

What did Jesus do through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension? Jesus conquered death. He did what we could never do—lived a perfect, sinless life and became a sacrifice that satisfied the justice of God. He was punished for every wrong we committed and brought us peace, reconciliation, and healing (see Isaiah 53:6).
As we conclude our “Upside Down Kingdom” series, Pastor Nick Tallo explains how Jesus conquered death by going to the cross and rising three days later. (See links below for the rest of the series.)
THE BAD NEWS & THE GOOD NEWS

We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s standard (Romans 3:23).
Our sin deserves death (Romans 6:23a).
We were born spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1).

God’s great love—His grace and mercy—made us alive in Christ (Ephesians 2:4-5).
God forgave our sins and canceled our debt and punishment through His death on the cross (Colossians 2:13-14).
We are made right with God when we believe Jesus sacrificed His life for us (Romans 3:23).

Humility is not by accident but a conscious effort on our part. It’s not present in our resume or a checkbox on our list of accomplishments, but only happens because of who Jesus is.
In Matthew 23: 11-12, Jesus was speaking among those who looked and acted like they had it all together: The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

God’s strength is made perfect in weakness according to the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 12. Can it be true? Or does God only value our self-reliance? Let’s find out.
====
Our culture doesn’t celebrate weakness, but strength. But in 2 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul flips this idea on its head when he responds to challenges around his ministry.
People were holding Paul’s many weaknesses against him. In his response, Paul says he’d gladly boast about his weaknesses instead of his strengths:
2 Corinthians 12:6–10 (NIV):
6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say,
7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.
8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Here are 5 reasons God’s strength is made perfect in weakness.
- BAD THINGS DO HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE, AND GOD WILL GIVE US MORE THAN WE CAN HANDLE.
Though God protects us, He allows us to experience difficulty. God may give you more than you can handle, but He’ll never give you more than HE can handle!

- IT’S PERFECTLY NORMAL TO PRAY FOR THORNS TO BE REMOVED.
Even though Paul pleaded with God to remove hardship, God didn’t. If you experience hardship, it’s OK to pray about it. But in this case, even though Paul pleaded with God to remove hardship from His life, the Lord chose not to take it away. It will strengthen your prayer life!

- THORNS ARE USED TO RESIZE US.
God’s in control. But when God allows difficulty into our lives, He often uses it to remind us we’re not as big as we think.

- THORNS ARE USED TO REMIND US.
In our weakness, God can shine through. His strength, sufficiency, and power can show up. When it does, we remember how great He is.
See 2 Corinthians 12:9, 2 Corinthians 4:7, 2 Timothy 1:7–8, and Ephesians 3:20–21
- WHEN EXPERIENCING THORNS, WE CAN BECOME BITTER, GIVE UP, OR TRUST GOD.
It’s easy to think that if something good happens, we accomplish something alone. But difficulty reminds us that if any good thing happens to us or through us, God did it.

- TALK ABOUT WHAT GOD HAS DONE IN YOUR LIFE
It’s easy to keep some of our most intimate moments with God to ourselves, but the young people in your life need to hear what you experienced!
- REALIZE YOUR FAITH IS OFTEN CAUGHT, NOT TAUGHT
When your words of faith don't seem to make an impact, it can be discouraging, especially when trying to pass your faith down to the next generation. Trust that God will show Himself through your actions, not just your words.
- BE WILLING TO BE EXHAUSTED FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS
The young people in your life may not want to discuss important matters on your schedule. But they may be open to late-night conversations! See the story of Nicodemus in John 3:1-21.
- INVITE GOD INTO THE SITUATION INSTEAD OF JUST GIVING ADVICE
When young people open up to you, it’s easy to just give advice. Spend a minute praying, inviting God in. Give Him room to move in your interaction.
- BECOME LIKE A CHILD TO REACH THE NEXT GENERATION
There’s a big difference between being like a child and being childish. To be like a child is to humble yourself, be willing to learn, and realize you could be wrong. See Luke 18:3.

Does consumer culture keep you from God’s best? Let’s learn how consumer culture holds you back, and how the shift from “consumer” to “contributor” can change your life and give more glory to God.

As Americans, we’re good at being served. That’s because our society (and most of the world) has moved from a “producer culture” to a “consumer culture.” Companies keep providing customers with higher and higher levels of service. It’s hard not to get too comfortable when you’re used to that kind of customer care!
But what happens when consumer culture creeps into the church? Will we miss out on some of what God has for us?
One of our core values at 2Rivers Church is, “We are spiritual contributors, not just consumers.” And even though being a spiritual consumer isn’t wrong in and of itself, God wants more from us—and for us.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING A CONSUMER AND A CONTRIBUTOR?
A consumer is a person who purchases goods and services for personal use. More broadly speaking, to be a consumer is to receive or be served. On the other hand, a contributor is someone who gives something to help someone else achieve or obtain something.
It’s not wrong to be a spiritual consumer. We all need to “consume” at some level—the Bible, good teaching, and worship music, for example. The problem is when we consume more than we contribute. God wants us to be both consumers and contributors.
WHY SHOULD I BE A CONTRIBUTOR?
- Because the Christian life is not about you.
Jesus is our example. He didn’t come so people would serve Him—He came to serve! Jesus spent His ministry teaching, healing, and helping people. He even gave His life for us! Let’s learn from that kind of humility.
See 2 Corinthians 5:15 and Mark 9:35.
- Because it’s your created purpose.
To be a contributor is to acknowledge that God created us for more than personal gratification. The Apostle Paul writes, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).
See also 1 Corinthians 12:12, 14–15, 1 Corinthians 12:18, and 1 Corinthians 12:27 (NLT).
- Because God uses it to capture the hearts of others.
When you become a contributor and not just a consumer, others see God working through you.
See Matthew 5:16.
HOW DO I BUCK CONSUMER CULTURE AND BECOME A CONTRIBUTOR?
- Lean into the One who first served us.
Jesus lived a life of service. His contribution to the world changed everything for us. Even on the last week of His life on Earth, He exemplified service by washing His disciples’ dirty, dusty feet. Let’s follow His example.
See Mark 10:45 and John 13:15.
- Jump in and start using your gifts.
How has God blessed you? Find ways to use your time and talents to serve others. That doesn’t just mean volunteering at church (which we encourage), but turning your whole life into a life of service.
See 1 Peter 4:10.

What does living a life of worship really mean? Romans 12:1 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
WHAT IS TRUE WORSHIP?
What is true worship? Paul tells us what living a life of worship is in his letter to the Roman church. It means to offer your body as a living sacrifice. In general, worship is “a feeling or expression of reverence and adoration of a deity.”

What does it mean to live on mission? Living on mission means actively pursuing God’s purpose every day and, in every way, which is to glorify Him in all you do so others will come to know Him. It is the Great Commission.
Know this: God wants to use you in His plan to draw others to His heart. You are His “plan A” to reach those around you—this is living on mission.
LIVING ON OR GOING ON A MISSION | WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Living on mission doesn’t necessarily mean going on a mission, but rather it is a way of walking out your faith and becoming God’s ambassadors wherever you are. Perhaps God has called you to GO ON A mission–to go into another area or country and preach the Gospel. But for most of us, this isn’t God’s calling on our lives. Instead, He says “go” which means while you are going. In other words, “While you live your life, live on mission for Me.”
Living on mission will likely push us out of your comfort zone, but it is not burdensome. (See 1 John 5:3-4)
FULFILLING THE GREAT COMMISSION IS WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE ON MISSION
Matthew 28:18-20 records Jesus’ final words before He ascended to heaven.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”
A COMMISSION – An instruction, command, or duty given to a person or group of people.
Before Christians become active in the Great Commission they need to understand God’s sovereignty over all creation. Jesus holds all authority, and He empowers us through the Holy Spirit to live on mission no matter where we are. Before we participate in the Great Commission, we must be a disciple of Christ.
A DISCIPLE – A follower, student of a teacher, leader or philosopher.
Wherever we go, and whoever God puts in our path, we are to look for opportunities to share the Gospel so others become disciples of Jesus.

What Is Life Change According to the Bible?

Justification: where God pronounces a sinner righteous because of their faith in Christ. In other words, this is about being “saved.”

Sanctification: the process by which Christians are set apart for God from the rest of the world. Or the process by which Christians are made holy. Sanctification is about becoming more like Christ throughout our lives.

Glorification: God’s final removal of sin from your life so that you can “stand faultless before him in glory for all eternity. Glorification is about the end of our story—all of eternity in heaven, where there are no more tears, temptations, pain, or fighting.

Why Are Small Groups Important?
In Acts 2, we see a model for the early church. It began with a sermon from Peter, and 3000 became Christians in one day. But that 3000-member “church” soon began meeting in small groups. Here were the characteristics of those more intimate community gatherings.
- Spiritual Growth
The disciples spent time in the Word of God, or “the disciple’s teaching,” in small groups.
- Fellowship
Fellowship points to the duty believers have to one another to help each other grow in their faith.
- The Breaking of Bread
When small groups gathered, they not only shared meals, but communion—putting Jesus front and center by remembering his death, burial, and resurrection.
- Prayer
The early disciples spent time expectantly praying for God to show up tangibly to change lives and circumstances.
- Meeting Needs
Small groups help meet one another’s needs. These needs are not just financial. They’re also mental, emotional, and spiritual.

What Is the Glory of God?
God’s glory is the essence of His character, the radiance of His splendor, and the expression of His goodness and intrinsic qualities. It is a physical manifestation of His holiness.
C.S. Lewis said, “In commanding us to glorify Him, God is inviting us to enjoy Him.” God lovingly asks you to glorify Him so you discover deeper peace, purpose, and passion in life.

What Is Your Purpose?
God created you for a purpose. You didn’t create yourself and cannot define your purpose. To discover that purpose, you must be in relationship with Him. Think of it this way: You have a tool but don’t know its purpose. What is the best way to find out? Consult the manufacturer. God’s Word is clear that you are made in His image. As your Creator, He designed you to reveal His glorious character to others. This is your purpose.
Your purpose is different from your calling. Your calling is how you live out the purpose of glorifying God daily. God is most glorified when you are most passionate about Him.

Jesus had tons of challenging things to say about love and how we love. He called into question people's lip-service to loving God and loving others and pointing out how they fell desperately short of the high call of God to love the Lord Your God and love your neighbor as yourself. We fall desperately short too and that's kind of the point of Jesus' story we're looking at today. So tune in and let's talk about how we really love our neighbor.
Scripture tells us that God so loved the world that He gave his only Son. It says He loved us first and we choose to love in return with all our heart, soul, and mind. So what does that even look like? What is love really and how do we express love to the invisible God of the universe?
Fasting has been a practice of the people of God for millennia and it's only been in the last couple hundred years (and predominantly in Western cultures) that it has become less practiced by followers of Jesus. Learn more about this discipline, why ancient followers of Jesus practiced it, and why it may be key to help you find breakthrough in your life and greater intimacy with God.
We have a God that wants a deep, personal relationship with you. What God isn't some old man in the sky just waiting to hit you with a lightning bolt but is a loving Father who's lights up when you and I choose to seek Him out and call His name? There's more to prayer than just giving God our shopping list of desires, but what if it's an incredibly personal means to bring the God of the universe into your life? Last week, we look at the reason we ought to be generous and how it's a matter of our hearts and values. This week we "get into the kitchen" and talk about what the Bible practically says about The Who, what, where, when, why of generosity!
There was a man with an interesting story named Simeon who God had promised he would not die until he saw the Messiah He was sending into the World. Today we look at the little bit we know about Simeon and what we can learn from him.
Jesus entered the scene quietly. At his first birthday, only a handful of people knew about Him and to celebrate his birth. It wasn't until his life, teaching, and death that his birth was known and celebrated. This Christmas, we look at the man named Jesus and the reason why we celebrate the birth of this little boy in the little town of Bethlehem.
The Book of Revelation can be confusing, discouraging, and sometimes scary. Many have misused and abused the words of Revelation to scare people into following Jesus and avoiding Hell. But was that the heart of the author of this book? Is that the only reason to follow Jesus? And if the Bible said Jesus was coming back soon, why hasn't He yet? Explore some of the questions out of the book of Revelation with us as we start at the End as we look to Christ's Beginning at Christmas!
In an age that we have more information available at our finger tips than any other time in history, we can often be the most foolish in history. The flood of information often does one thing to us: it paralyzes us from action. Let's see what the Bible has to say about how to live with godly wisdom that leads to action.
Often for us, it's hard to understand why Jesus had to die at all when we're all mostly "pretty good" people; couldn't God just forgive and forget our sins? The writer of Hebrews implores that if we hear God's voice to not harden our hearts to continue doing things the way we want to. The writer warns that we can actually harden our hearts to God while being very religious and showing up at church. Is contentment the same as joy? Is it the same as having everything we want or need or accomplishing all our goals? Let's talk about contentment and how we finally find it.
Today, we talk about the good news of Jesus and explain one of the biggest misunderstandings people have about what following Jesus is all about (in fact, many CHRISTIANS misunderstand this critical element of the good news of Jesus). Is being a good person enough to get me to heaven? Is being a Christian just about doing all the good things and not doing all the stuff the Bible says is bad? Let's talk about it! In the book of Philippians, Paul urges Christians to, "live in a manner worthy of the gospel." The Good news of Jesus is a radical story of grace beyond what we deserve by a God who is equally just and loving. Today we talk about how this message can often be added to, distorted, or changed to fit our lifestyle, desires, or agendas. The ones we talk about today can be very subtle and we can find ourselves buying in to them if we don't regularly preach the genuine Gospel to ourselves every day. Why is it that a people who follow a God who is love are often considered the least loving? Let's talk about this greatest commandment we were given to love others well and why it doesn't matter what truth we have to share, if love isn't the primary motivation. Join us as we look at a well-known scripture that most of us have hear at weddings, and look at it with fresh eyes.
All you have to do to drift away from Jesus is nothing. If there's not some purpose and determination in our walk with Jesus, we will drift away and become comfortably numb in this life and towards things of faith. If, as followers of Jesus, we believe what we say we believe, wouldn't we want to give every ounce of energy and passion toward our relationship with Jesus? If what we say we believe is true, we should be the most passionate and alive people on this planet. So, then, why is this often not the case?

Through out the centuries, the news about Jesus was called the "Good News." So let's talk about why Jesus may be the very good news you need to hear.
One of the hardest questions we often face when we consider faith in God is how God could allow such terrible things to happen in our lives and still be called "Good." Have you ever heard this phrase? Other ways we say this sentiment is "Live your truth," "You do you...," "My truth may not be your truth, but whatever works for you, that's cool." That as long as you're a pretty good person and try to not hurt anybody else, whatever you believe is ok. The Bible paints a different picture that may seem pretty narrow minded to many. We want to discuss today those distinct beliefs and why they make it difficult for followers of Jesus to hold to this sentiment.
"Don't judge me." You've probably said it and heard it. You may have been hurt by someone who called themselves a Christian, and yet were some of the most judgmental and unloving people you've ever met. What does God really say about judging others? It's been said that unforgiveness is a poison we drink and expect the other person to die. The Bible tells us there's a peace that's much more robust than this, that we can have even when things are at their worst--when life has laid you flat, dinged you up, left you scars or left you wronged and raw. The best thing you can do for your kids is for Jesus to be YOUR lead story in your home. Not just something that happens at church once a week. We want to be a place where kids aren't just tolerated but embraced as the next generation that needs to know and understand the life changing story of Jesus.

God doesn't need your money. What we see in the Bible is that giving and generosity is far more about what God wants FOR you than what He wants FROM you. It's way more about our hearts than our wallets.
If you're skeptical of that statement and feel like the church is just out to get your money, then this is a message you want to hear!
As followers of Jesus, we are called to live our lives on mission! It is necessary for us to talk about what Jesus has done in our lives so that others around us may come to know Jesus!
God has so much more in store for your life and it's about so much more than just you. Community is something we have to be intentional about and chase after. None of us are perfect, but God can do powerful things if we don't give up on community, especially in the church.
