Winning produces probably the most thrilling and desired feelings 🔥 to have in Sports.

On this (not so) ‘Quick Bring it On’ Episode, I provide a little important tweak you can take with you around the word “WIN” .

This one is for a deeper focus on the present moment during practice or competition (and to what the game asks from you), and a not so deep fusion with your emotionality and thinking sides that are creeping in there and becoming unhelpful.

( Essential Interview Mentioned is on EWS Episode #77 )

We all get triggered by some things, in some way or another. 😤 This can be good to mobilize one's energy for the sake of a good performance, or it can block an Athlete's optimal performance.

What about being able to not letting criticism get the best out from you, and picking on the useful information that is coming from the sensitive topic pointed at?

As the Author of this Speech, the Referee Frederik Imbo tells: “Most of us are referees at heart; we like to call throws and errors on someone else.”

Tune in on this PotW to check out how this plays out, and how you can become better able to regulate all of this, and efficiently manage when people criticize you more harshly or point at some deficits in your performance.

A path to E-W-S indeed, on this extended PotW.

An IQ to shake some preconditions and expectations 🤕 Athletes usually have in regards to their own levels of performance on training sessions or competition matches.

This will inspire a reflection for yourself about your feelings and the way you look at them. Plus, on how they are influencing what you’re bringing (or being able to bring) to the pitch - to your performance.

I hope in the end, you will not need (depend) that much of feeling X or Y to perform well (the most adapted possible - with effort) 😉

PS.: I heard this message before from Ken, but here is a link with the excerpt from an interview he gave and pronounced the quote, exploring it.

A talk about 🚧 “overcoming obstacles to excellence” - and more! This is just to honor our guest’s motto in the work he does as a Clinical and Sport Psychologist in the USA - Dr. Eddie O’Connor.

This one filled me of joy, and I consider this one of the most useful and essential for any athlete!

Hands-on approaches are shared for athletes to relate better with themselves in tougher times, as well as managing unhelpful feelings and reactions related with performance.

Our conversation ranged on topics like Failure (one’s perceptions and reactions around that), the traits and menaces about Positive Thinking, around his motto “Overcoming Obstacles to Excellence”, and still about Doing one’s best in the present moment, plus other stories related to psychological experiences during sporting events.

_____

QUOTES:

“There’s always something naturally human that keeps getting in the way. We’re all motivated (...) Motivation for what?”

“Ashamed of the quote on old BC: “Because Average isn’t good enough”

“If Excellence in your mind is achieving a gold medal, that’s a terrible message. You got (many other achievements). Excellence is a Personal Standard”

“(...) It’s a poisonous way that we do as humans, and it’s catastrophic to performers. Because they have nothing to do with us. (...) When we start comparing we start to lose focus on what we can control.”

On prioritizing Mental Training 🧠 (and Mental Health). A set of reports from an elite NFL player - Russel Wilson, retrieving from a TedTalk he gave.

A great 6min informal speech naturalizing life hardships in sports contexts, and sharing a few stories from himself, and how he went about them coping the most efficiently possible.

He speaks, about shifting gears to neutral to regain some mental balance, as it also helps to get ready to perform (even under pressure(s)).

A critical element 🚣‍♂️ for any process of learning or improvement: BELIEF.

To believe that oneself is capable of improving is often considered as the pivotal aspect that must accompany a person so that that improvement occurs.

We all also know that this is too broad of a matter, and that it often sounds as a motivational cliché. Like: “believe in yourself! You are capable of anything” type of statements.

Either way, from this episode, I want to show a power within ‘believing on improvement’ (two key words!). Alongside that, I wanted to draw on some behavioral implications this aspect has on one’s efforts and training.

As a quote from Terry Orlick says: “As your beliefs about limits change, the limits change”. How’s been yours?

PS: Cristiano Ronaldo just broke another record: all-time best scorer for National teams - 111goals. And many people (including himself often mentioning) attribute this astronomical success to believing one can do it and cultivating a desire to improve and get closer to those big goals.

A Special Episode for EWS! 🦸‍♂️ It is with one of our most seeked Sport Psychologists, Dan Abrahams, and it is in a new format - I prepared some topics in a PowerPoint presentation, where me and Dan went along live talking about them.

It was one of the hardest Interviews to prepare so far, since I knew Dan could cover many topics with expertise and eloquence. That’s why I decided to change the style a bit and found it to be one of EWS’ most complete conversations. We've covered a range of themes on:

  • Identity of the Player/Athlete (Balance, Mental Health, and Management of other issues) ; Guided Discovery (to help on Learning Processes + CLA Theory) ; Alertness (on Focus and important in-field aspects) ; Stretch-Support Balance Principle ; Self-Efficacy (A 4 Component Model and how Coaches can stimulate this on Athletes) ; Mental Toughness (Tweaks on the concept and elements to inspire a Mental Skillset) ; Achievement Goal Theory (one’s ego, and mastering processes).

NOTE: To remind you that this was inspired on several posts Dan produces consistently on Social Media (especially LinkedIn juicy ones) - Sooo --- Here is the PPT Presentation that you can follow along

--> Make sure to visit Dan’s renowned Podcast “The Sport Psych Show” - a main reference for us since the beginning in this path to E-W-S!

Quotes:

  • “In training, from a Cognitive perspective, we need simple tasks and tougher tasks. We need to introduce ‘desirable difficulties’ (such as variability, spacing) (...) we have a greater chance to learn what we’re trying to learn - to improve.”

  • “Great coaches coach explicitly and implicitly ... (on Discovery Learning)”

  • “(...) language areas in our brains are linked to body functions. That’s why I do a lot of work around language with players - whether it it is around narratives for the game, or specific cues tu use in a game.”

Excited to receive 💥 TedX Speaker and "Changing the Game Project" Founder, John O'Sullivan! Sharing knowledge and resources especially for Parents and Coaches in Youth Sports.

_____

Quotations:

"My favorites parts of the week are getting out there with the 13yo boys that I coach in Soccer, because that really keeps me connected to everything that I'm doing - as a Parent, as a Coach, as someone who is trying to create an experience for children that is not transactional, but Transformational (...) not only to make them better on the field, but make them better people."

"We get better by Challenge, when we are at that zone of Proximal Development (Piaget). That comes with winning and losing; not winning all the time. Or losing all the time."

" The most powerful voice in sport is our own. That internal self-talk that says 'I'm not good enough. Why am I here?' OR the one that says 'I got this!' - Recognizing what that internal dialogue is, and training ourselves to change it if it's not helpful..."

What if all the comments 🗨️ you received when performing a task were powerful enough to make you happy you listened to those, as well as useful for learning and improvement??

We're talking about the different ways of providing feedback! What different impacts they can have? (check episode #20 btw!

On this QBIO we will not explore this big Theme in-depth for sure. But we present a creative idea (coming from John Kessel) on transforming the energy attached to the assumptions around "Feedback" and "Criticism", so that one becomes more open and at ease to receive the prospective comments with potential for development for one's future, and several levels.

All while having in mind the Principles for E-W-S!

A big one for Parents, finally! 👨‍👦 “Non-Perfect Dad” Richard Shorter joins EWS to talk with Host Gonçalo Marques about Parenting Approaches to youngsters in sports.

Keep in mind that this go crosswise and there's Educational gems packed here.

We go through what may be healthier, and more enriching for a proper athlete and child development, and through what can be more inappropriate, or maladaptive in that sense. Always in mind that our main purpose is to promote reflection into one’s Practices and views for their families and children (and for the Child as an Athlete in talent development processes!). Not imposing our views.

Although Parents want the best for their Children, sometimes the best intentions are not accompanied by the best practices. And unfortunately, there's a set common displaced behaviors from Parents to their Children in Sports.

Anyways, we unravel topics like (among others) :

  • The risks of overvaluing Winning, and of overemphasizing good scores, as it can bring conditionalisms + disregard important aspects in childs behaviors and mindset;

Quotations:

“Lots of fun away from what my kids are good at (...) I love my Children, AND they play Sports. I don't love my 'Sporty Children'."

"I don't think parents set out to love their children because they play Sports, but I think sometimes they accidentally convey that and that's why we're seeing some Mental Health Challenges in young people."

"If a coach understands the best outcome is a gold medal, then those habits (for parents) will be different to others more developmental orientated. And that's part of the challenge of the society we live..."

"They (...) play against teams that are 2-3years older (...) And they prep the children: 'you're gonna lose, this is gonna be a tough game, we want you to have a tough experience - here's what we want you to get out of this... That's brilliant in coaching!"

Having imprecise shots 🎯 in your practice (whatever they may be)? Great!! How so “great”, are you kidding??! No, these fails and imprecisions are good for development. They can be your little coaches voicing to you what you need to adjust the next time.

So, we didn’t incur on a mistake on writing the title for this QBIO. This one is to make you remind that the off-target attempts in your practices (i.e. shots, passes, technical executions...) CAN BE effective teachings! Teachings to make you grow and actualize your methods and techniques.

And all this might only be well achieved and secured by having a clean mind and free from distractions and negative intrusive thoughts. And these elements + other wishes for you to Efficiently Work your Sports Practice, are encompassed by other contents EWS keeps publishing.

So keep attuned to new episodes coming and the broad list already published!

--> And while you keep in touch with us, please think about it: Besides the tweaks you can make in your trainings to have them become more “Deliberate Practices” How can you find ways to Practice more efficiently? In other words, how can you fire more often. And what will you learn from each shot?

PS. We leave a catchy little quote inside (from Ice Hockey player Wayne Gretzky - expect an IQ soon on another one from him) for you to keep it on the back of your mind when you’re feeling you are about to retract your attempts or your moves 😉 Just click play.

It’s common sense that Obstacles 🕸️ block, or impair, one’s level of performance. But what if some obstacles can propel better learning + great developments in your performance?

This can certainly be true, and there’s Science to back it up, as well as real case reports in favor of that.

This is based on the CLA (Constraints Led Approach) and we learned about it from THIS GUY & from THIS PODCAST (reference of this PotW!)

See, the main logic: by inserting some tweaks on a certain task a player has to perform (i.e. a drill in his sport modality practice), or on any exercise a student on a Physical Education Class, the player/student will start to be more stimulated, more encourage to find new solutions, which in turn, will make him/her develop new resources and skills!

But please, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Go on listen to this Pod and visit ‘ The Perception Action Podcast ’ to dive deeper on this topic (good for Coaches).

What about this to E-W-S, huh?

Please share with us: what are some obstacles/constraints that you once thought to be harmful for your practice or development, and that you now know it made a positive impact?

EWS Expert talk, w/ Dr. Tim Pineau ☯️ - Researcher and Clinical Psychotherapist; co-creator of the Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement program (MSPE); Author, and Sports Consultant.

We went over things like how Mindfulness principles can be applied to student-athletes lives; talked about ways on how to be at ease, and even grow professionally and personally, from difficult emotions; talked about appropriate times to be in auto-pilot mode, and, on the flip side, some hindrances that it can bring; the type of self-criticism that functions as an impairing element to performance; and touched on another topics and curious facts.

All in all, this is a colleague of mine that I love by his stance of having integrative views and treating the athlete or coach as a person in his/her whole with needs and wishes that go beyond the sports realm, and that is clearly manifested in his work, also continuously integrating Mindfulness in all the team elements that he gets in touch with.

Tim also has a Podcast in collaboration with lead Researcher on the field, Keith Kauffman, called Mindful Sport Performance Podcast. You can see more about their WORK and PROGRAM by clicking the words.

Assuming something upfront from Behavior X is rash. ⁉️ Inquiring and Exploring is wise.  Want to know more about your internal processes? As a coach / parent, want to get closer to your athlete / child and ‘efficiently work’ to help him? The best road I know to get there is the one with QUESTIONS.

On this QBIO, not only is shared the power of questions, but more importantly, the intent and the stance one should enter while posing them (Hint: always curiosity...!)

It might seem trivial, but this episode is essential to E-W-S! Questions may very well be the main ingredients for a healthy relationship, for spurring athletic development, for respect and empathy.

So, do you have something to ask yourself? Someone in the team? Us, at EWS? Be at ease, and express yourself.

Which moments in Sports get you the chills? ⬜ I get emotional with moments of Fair Play. And it’s about this essential Principle filled with great values that we get on a ramble for this PotW.

No particular reference to a post, just sharing 4 touching episodes representative of Fair Play.

With these, and by sharing some thoughts about it, EWS hopes to raise awareness for what matters most across Sports, and what should be embodied and taken to other areas of life.

Because what would be of one’s genuine love to play and to win, without having fair competition and Fair Play measures. Without Fair Play where would be the dignity in the play of the game?

This was indeed a special episode to produce and to share with you. So...

-- Please reflect on this. Be a force in favor of Fair Play values, especially where dirty gaming or cheating may be spurring out.

What gets in front of you as an obstacle to your best/fluid performance? 🎏 Whatever it is, it almost certainly spurs from thoughts (about the past or the future) or unproductive states of mind. How can you around it? Is it really AROUND the thoughts?

We are not providing a stellar technique that will be the solution to all those problems that might get an athlete in suboptimal levels. Still, we dive in on a ramble recalling the goodies of bringing oneself back to the present moment.

For that, on this IQ, Gonçalo decided to bring some wisdom retrieved from a speech given by acclaimed Actor Jim Carrey. Also, Gonçalo uses this episode to call into attention the importance of considering Psychotherapy as an option, and its benefits.

Then, which path will you choose at each moment? How can you go about it in order to + Efficiently Work your Sports Practice?

“If you aren’t in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty, or back to pain and regret.”

Introducing the OPTIMAL Model (for E-W-S?) 🙌 with leading Researchers Gabriele Wulf & Rebecca Lewthwaite. 👩‍🔬 Tune in to get to know the 3 elements that constitute this solid scientific model which can assist athletes or any other person in their performance and learning processes.

On this extended conversation we dive into some motivational variables for you to get to know what might impair your training moments, and which ones can you tweak so that you get more “in the zone”.

All the topics covered touch on psychological and physiological aspects that relate to actual focus and movement while performing.

Overall, we talk about scientific creative experiences that showed specific conditions for better performance results; we talk about the important role of one’s expectancies prior to a sporting competition event; The degrees of autonomy and control one senses while performing a task; And still during tasks, we talk about where our focus should be, how, and why.

For me, I would go for one more hour with these guests hearing their stories and scientific experiments, so you can count with that and some other cool facts, as these women combine +200 scientific papers published!

NOTE: I’m sorry by the audio quality on my part - the original microphone recording wasn’t saved, unfortunately. I made my best to edit and improve it in post-production; and I’ll make sure it won’t happen again.

Quotes:

“When people are early on the learning of a skill, like ‘what am I supposed to do here? - I need to do a form like this and my elbow be like that..’ - that’s a ‘Description issue’. Once you’ve figure out the sequence of events that should happen, and you shut that other part off, you might be closer to a better external focus to achieve.”

“We don’t think there is a place where Internal Focus is beneficial (in performance or learning moments). (...) When you get your mind cleared, where is just one thought, not multiple points in space.”

Big improvements can come 📐 from small processes in training.  Deliberately doing certain activity and know what to look for in that is the way to go. But it only sustains if:  1. It’s a smart move ;  2. You stick to it (but keep flexible in reviewing it!) ;  3. Believe you can improve.

On this QBIO, I got a bit of the rails with time, but it was for good reasons. Here I distill more about this, and I present the idea of Kaizen - coming from a story of NBA star coach Pat Riley, in the 1986-87 season.

And you, athlete, despite difficulties by the pandemic, what are some 1% s that you can focus on and implement some strategic processes?

What can we learn from bad performances? 🤢 In moments where one is frustrated or dismissive of what he/she is producing on the field, the competition continues. So focus and efforts must be redirected appropriately.

You already know, as an athlete, or as a person in any other work or activity, that you cannot be always at your best. In your A-game, right? How much easier would that be?! If this was possible and easy to attain, EWS and Sport Psychologists wouldn’t exist.

So, on this PotW, with ideas retrieved from the glorious “Sport Psych Show” Podcast, where the Host Psychologist Dan Abrahams, in an Interview with Dr. Duncan Simpson , we share a collaborative and hopeful approach that coaches can have to their athletes (and athletes to themselves!) in order for them to be well-adjusted and so that their athleticism and Mental Game are promoted.

What about you? In tough / challenging moments, what do you usually do? Can you point out a negative thought that keeps going inside your head and affects your performance? Moreover, can you tell a behavior you go for in these kinds of moments? Feel free to share with us, or bring up the conversation among your team, as that can be a crucial step to Efficiently-Work-Sports 😉

Athletes, as with any other person, 🔮 might get stuck into some misfortune that happened in the past. What about clearing that out from one’s mind ⚾ and catch the opportunities we have at each present moment, in order to get closer to the outcome we want?

This Quote for today’s IQ, although seemingly simple, it has some intricacies that can spur up some discussion. And taking that in consideration I approached it from some angles. And between all I call into attention some more deep work one might consider doing psychologically - hinting for Psychotherapy - nothing wrong about that (by the contrary! All right pretty possibly)

This comes from a not well known author (James R Sherman) from his book “Rejection - How to Survive Rejection and Promote Acceptance” - and it is clearly about this key aspect that I talk on this IQ. So the Insight part will be on the Letting go spirit in a good sense, and in fact, a good follow up from previous interview with Psychologist Luís Gonçalves, on Mindfulness.

QUOTE: “Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending”.

Today’s Quote is provocative 😈 , and I know the title is even more! Here we have kind of a paradox, but there’s some truth to that, that we want to pull an attention to in this IQ episode.

Let’s go forward on our journey of optimal and continuous optimal learning and listen in as this one can be of good use to promote patience, curiosity, and adaptability.

Which challenges are you facing currently that might need a new perspective? A new tweak in training? Face adversity in your sports practice properly 😉

This IQ is the ones that have found themselves with this tendency. We don’t criticize that option to stop on this episode - we just attempt to provide some reflection and encouragement for a person to better position herself in order to engage on a path of mastery.

Going through rough times 😖 without friendly support to uplift and encourage you is, in fact, hard.

This is not an episode to refer big dark moments, more than the day to day situations an athlete might face with other sportsmen, and that can affect negatively their wellbeing and performance.

In order to provide information around the impacts of Stress and Support in the athlete’s feelings and behaviors, we lay out what was inspired by Joaquin Phoenix speech at the Oscars Ceremony, 2020.

Quote: “When we support each other, not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes - that’s when we are at our best”

In the face of missed attempts 😤 , in any sport, it might be hard to digest the sour results...

Frustration can creep in in a way that lead an athlete to get demoralized and with lower levels of confidence.

So in this QBIO, we aim for composure. For the optimized reactions after failure. For how you can position yourself, so that you learn efficiently and improve effectively.

--- Will you now gracefully, and gratefully, reload yourself mentally in order to Efficiently Work your Sports Practice? 😉

On this PotW we reflect on 2 main Perspectives/Cultures, we can encounter in team sports, and what are the potential consequences (positive and negative) that can come from each of those poles (as they can be allocated in a spectrum!)

A good one to address some prejudicial factors, and prevent competitive distress and anxiety.

Now, how will you creatively put your unique sports creativity in service of your team’s overall performance?

The Philosophy of 🥇 Growth Mindset: Probably the #1 Ingredient for E-W-S!

Do you want to improve your Mental Game? Do you want to have an approach that gives you an edge in whatever Training Process?

Struggle is a natural part of Learning processes.

Trevor even indicates that in the moments of improving at any skill, one should be WILLING to TRAIN in an UGLY fashion.

-- Join in this Interview to conquer the struggles that seem to block your progress, so that you get closer to improve and Efficiently Work in your Sport Practice.

_____

Quotations:

“Sometimes we pick up on these things when we are younger and they can be reinforced as we grow older (...) and become true. The trap of Fixed Mindset is: If you don’t believe you can learn something you’re going to end up being right.”

“We have to change our relationship with Struggle (...) there’s no way to get good at something if you’re not willing to struggle (...) it’s not something we should be afraid of.”

“(...) The better approach is not to suppress stress and fear, it’s to accept it. It’s to reappraising it. And understanding that is human and okay to feel that (...)”

“One step to Resilience is the willingness to feel.”

“You don’t have to try all sorts of new stuff. It’s just like - What is one little thing you could try today? - And keep stacking those up, and then overtime that’s how we make a BIG change!”

The mistakes are often observed as signals of inability 👺 and can automatically disempower an athlete.

What if you can tolerate more of those? What if you can learn from them and get better. Even better, what about getting empowered in several ways??

Listen to the little applicable insights in this IQ Episode, and get closer to achieve that! No wishy-washy stuff here.

It comes from a Baseball sport context, but is easily translated into other settings, as much of it serves as a metaphor.

Being confronted 😬 and being the aim of harsh criticism is a difficult challenge.

This PotW episode goes on delivering some ideas on how to receive negative criticism so that you can still blossom from there.

Check out this reference to a short bit of a rant that Tom Bilyeu was giving on an interview about the struggle of receiving negative comments about oneself, or about one’s actions.

_____

Quotations:

“The people at the highest level of self-delusion (usually happier) are usually not the ones that go the farthest because they don’t stop to recognize where they really are - to own the pain of that - (…)” - from the Interview

“ ‘negative’ criticism isn’t that malevolent and deterministic in the way of being negative for you.”

Does a boost in self-esteem 🤩 necessarily leads to increased performance levels? This one goes on addressing Self-esteem in Sports Contexts.

-- Have you ever been caught in the idea that feeling absolutely awesome about yourself would result in awesome performance results? Well, think twice.

This episode lays out some information from the biggest and more reliable Scientific Article reviewing of the Self-esteem literature, from Roy Baumeister (the most cited Psychologist in the Science world!) and his colleagues.

We point out to some direct and indirect implications from this subjective concept on Task Performance. Moreover, coming from this Scientific knowledge, we leave some suggestions on relational aspects that should be taken in consideration (especially by Coaches and Parents) when approaching athletes executions and other behaviors.

Always with the intent of providing information that help in “Efficiently Work Sports” Practice, this one includes insights for the consequences of different types of feedback - calling into attention some communication styles that may be regarded as good, but can be risky.

PS: This was also the paper that led me to meet the longest word in the English Dictionary: floccinaucinihilipilification - the action or habit of estimating as worthless (...)

_____

Quotations:

Self-esteem is the resulting feelings that the person get from how she evaluates and how much she values those characteristics, and the things that they bring, in her life.

“In view of the heterogeneity of high self-esteem, indiscriminate praise might just as easily promote narcissism, with its less desirable consequences. Instead, we recommend using praise to boost self-esteem as a reward for socially desirable behavior and self-improvement.”

If a person has a more fragile self-esteem it’s likely that she will often avoid being confronted. Whether it will be confronted with a challenging task - that ultimately has the potential of improvement - or confronted with some harsh but truthful feedback(...)”

Bringing the best from Science 👩‍🔬 to Sporting fields, EWS presents here the 'Optimizing Performance Through Intrinsic Motivation and Attention for Learning' Model.

Have you ever felt you get to a plateau in your level in sports? Would you like to actualize or improve your accuracy in some shots? Maybe you get stuck in some technical execution some time. Or further yet, maybe you are starting to learn a new skill that you find is out of your reach…

This is an in-depth episode about the OPTIMAL Model that strikes upon characteristics which are relevant for anyone's practice - in the development of whatever skills.

We get it well structured, pointing out to its main 3 components (Motivational, Autonomy, and Attentional factors).

With gems included for athletes to apply in further practices in the domains they most need in their sport, both Physically and Psychologically speaking!

Also for coaches, that may now follow some guidelines to better assist their athletes in training. With an emphasis on the relational aspect, and what should (and shouldn't) be promoted.

________

Quotations:

“Prospectively, expectancies for personal performance appear to serve a task-readying function. We would be merely reactive, and not proactive, without predictive and probability based mechanisms that prepare us for action”

“People who believe that (motor) abilities are relatively fixed (so-called entity theorists), tend to be more concerned with proving their ability, and they perceive errors or negative feedback as a threat to the self, because they reveal a limited capacity or lack of ability."

"Its motor system seems to “know” what it has to do to achieve the desired outcome --- It is hard to imagine other animals moving affirmatively for food or survival with a constant internal conversation regarding how to move their limbs most effectively."

Deliberate Practice 🔵 is a well validated concept (and tool!), that people wanting to engage in a Path OF Mastery at any skill development, should know about - and start to implement its valuable principles.

On the First EWS Interview, our founder speaks to an Expert in this field: Alexandre Vaz. He has an admirable background, EWS loves his work on the Psychotherapy realm, and we couldn't start this off better!

He works with other professionals in that matrix of Practice (mainly from the Psychotherapy world and for Psychotherapists) @DP_Institute

Anyway, this wasn't constrained by that. He is also a stupendous Musician, Teacher, Public Speaker, and a continuous Student (loves Biographies!) -- listen to Intro for proper presentation of him.

Layout (in short):- We present the topic with an emphasis on athletes and students.

  • We go over imagined scenarios and real examples.

  • We diverge on associated and relevant components to engage well in practice and go for the gradual and sustained improvements

  • Mainly expressing the role of psychological and emotional aspects when envisioning these kind of practices and processes.

NOTE: Due to technical issues, the first 5-10 minutes were not recorded by my mic. So you will hear a pronounced cut informing the time where it got turned on. You should listen with better quality from there. (Intro was also made presentially with Alex)

_____

Quotations:

  • "The problem is: if you train without thinking about this, it's kind of leaving up to luck to know if you're on that optimal zone or not. But if you train in a way (...) the training will help"
  • "(...) so just repeating in and of itself gives very little to anyone (...) what you are repeating, how, when... those are the most important..."
  • "Trying to motivate people is a dangerous business. (...) I don't think that it's the teacher's role totally motivate and engage his student...(clarifies)"
  • "We don't want to say to people 'you shouldn't criticize yourself', or 'you shouldn't feel ashamed (...) they'll just feel unvalidated. The most effective way is..."
  • "Deliberate Practice is failure facing: you have to be very comfortable with failing. And if you're only comfortable with not showing, you're probably not gonna get better."
  • "A precondition for getting better at something is (the ability to be)being bad at something"

-- Bring It (Comfort) On! 🕊️

This one is for people (especially athletes or coaches) that have experienced some kind of struggle or indecision when facing a sports or relational challenge in sport.

It covers a seemingly antagonic idea from what was laid out on this 1st Ep.

But we untangle and resolve that issue in our style: efficiently!

This one touched on a key element to keep in mind when thinking to E-W-S... which is Balance. And Responsiveness, for that matter. Listen on to understand this!

On the Premiere 😃 for this “Insight Quote” Series, our founder brings a tricky quote from Ex-Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.

Some enthusiastics may say that you just gotta be Positive and things work out just well. Some may say that it’s all about perspective when confronting hardships and being able to improve.

EWS prefers to take a more balanced view and say that, indeed perspective can do a lot and put an athlete in the position of facing challenges and assess difficulties in a more realistic but empowering way, in order to efficiently work in his/her sport!

Please, if you listen even just to the quote, tell us how you look at difficulties, now.
