“Perhaps the sight of beauty makes him lose control of himself, so he kills.” With a chill in the air and October just around the corner, for this month’s premium podcast we decided it was finally time to tackle the horror films of highly influential Italian genre director Mario Bava. Considering how much fun we had with Dario Argento a few years back, we were eager to dive into several of Bava’s films including Evil Eye, Black Sabbath, Blood and Black Lace, Planet of the Vampires and A Bay of Blood. Our conversation covers a lot of ground including the history of the slasher genre, differences between the various cuts of these films, an attempt to decipher several overcomplicated plots, debating the most impressive kills and special effects sequences as well as speculation on just how many modern filmmakers Bava may have inspired. Is the Alien franchise a complete rip off Planet of the Vampires? Is giallo just a cool-sounding word or is it actually a cohesive subgenre? How long can someone stay breathing after having their throat slit? Watch out for wurdulaks and squonks while you download this month’s premium podcast below.

Update: Due to popular demand, we have decided to leave back episodes available for sale on Gumroad indefinitely (even after Oct. 1st) and to expand the offerings to include all regular episodes not available elsewhere.

As the sun hangs low in the sky and the tumbleweeds roll by in the distance, it is time for us to announce something that has been on the horizon for quite a while now: the shutdown of this very website. As you may know, the Film Junk Podcast has been around for over 16 years and the Film Junk website has been around even longer than that through various incarnations. It started as an online “zine” (do these even exist anymore?) before morphing into a message board / news site / blog. The Film Junk crew along with many close friends and collaborators poured countless hours into this site without ever receiving a paycheque for it and I am proud to say that together we built an amazing little online community that is still going strong to this day.

In recent years, life has made it more difficult to maintain the website and social media has made it all but obsolete. After we launched our Patreon almost two years ago, it was kindly embraced by the Film Junk community and slowly started to become the new hub for all things Film Junk. The website was updated less frequently and traffic gradually dwindled, which basically brings us to where we are today. After giving it a lot of thought, we have decided that in the interest of consolidation, simplification and just generally making our lives easier, we will be shutting down FilmJunk.com and henceforth putting all of our focus on Patreon. The podcast itself will continue to be free on various podcast services as it always has been, but the website and many of the back episodes are going away. Here is a summary of the changes that are happening:

  • FilmJunk.com will go offline as of Fri. Oct. 1st and the domain will forward to the Patreon site
  • Comments will now happen on Patreon and all posts will be locked to Patrons only
  • Additional discussion can and will continue to happen on the Film Junk subreddit as well
  • We will continue to share movie news and in-house updates via Twitter, but long form posts (if there are any) will be on Patreon
  • A few legacy pieces of written content like the Glossary will likely move to Patreon (still TBD)
  • The Film Junk Podcast will remain available on iTunes, Spotify, etc. for free
  • Only the latest 50 episodes of Film Junk will be publicly available, all other back episodes will go offline on Fri. Oct. 1st
  • All episodes that have been posted on Patreon will remain on Patreon moving forward (Patrons will always have access to episode #725 and later)
  • Gumroad back episode bundles will be taken off sale on Fri. Oct. 1st (those who previously purchased them will still be able to access them indefinitely)
  • Gumroad will continue to offer all back episodes for sale and any that disappear from the public feed in yearly bundles
  • Premium podcasts will remain on Bandcamp as they are today
  • Game Junk and Ball Junk will continue to be free on iTunes, Spotify, etc. but they will not be posted on Patreon
  • We have also created a Linktree page that will contain the latest episode and up to date social media links, etc.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks to all who have frequented FilmJunk.com over the years and an extra special thanks to anyone who has ever contributed to the site as a writer or a commenter. Please don’t be strangers. Hope to see you all on Patreon!
