Dr. Shouse is an alternative medicine practitioner and self-ascribed Health Rebel. She will discuss the latest and greatest in Functional medicine, Chinese medicine, Botanical medicine, Orthomolecular Nutrition and Supplements.
Discussions will focus on the root cause of disease and will often land squarely OUTSIDE of the mainstream, conventional medical paradigm. Sometimes things get serious, salty or sassy. Other times, we'll have fun. But mostly, we'll talk about real things that matter to real people!
Protein is the only macronutrient (the other two are carbohydrates and fat) where we do not spend much time discussing what it is made of! On a food label, you will see the breakdown of fats-- saturated, unsaturated, etc.. You will see the breakdown of carbohydrates--sugar, added sugar, fiber, etc.. But you hardly ever see the constituents of protein, amino acids, on a label unless that particular product is highlighting amino acids for some reason (ex. protein powder). Well, the quality and quantity of amino acids in a food is extremely important if you are looking to build muscle, gain better balance, better metabolic health or any of the benefits that come along with a healthy protein intake. I'm often asked, What is your protocol for high cholesterol? Or, it more often goes like this, "What do you do for high cholesterol, Amy?" My answer (unsurprisingly) is, "It depends!" In this episode I discuss the importance of your personal, individual cholesterol profile vs. the simple statement of "I have high cholesterol." Meaning, you can have high numbers, but if you dig deeper, look at certain ratios and the actual size of your cholesterol particles, you will likely see a much more individualized story. This individual story of your cholesterol profile is what should be driving any protocol. Listen for more info on what to look for!

Bern Williams has a great quote that says, “Unsolicited Advice Is The Junk Mail of Life.” When I first read this I laughed out loud because its so true. Often as patients or clients, we go to health experts, providers, trainers and nutritionist when we have a health goal like losing weight or eating a healthy diet and say to them, "Just tell me what to do!"
This is not a bad place to start, but something is missing and that missing piece is imperative to your success. We need to have a deeper conversation about values, objectives and strategies so that your list of recommendations and goals is put into action in a way that makes sense to you. You need to feel comfortable with the strategies and think about what works for your personality, character, values and lifestyle. This is where the deeper work lies. Without the marriage of You+Your Goals, you are are either just you or just your goals. Find a way to structure your life around your preferences and lifestyle and you WILL succeed!

We often beat ourselves up for making choices that we know do not benefit our health. We say things like, “I need more willpower” or “I wish I had more discipline.” This kind of thinking is flawed. We don’t necessarily need willpower. We don’t need to muster up discipline. In this episode I talk about what we really need, which is to know ourselves— really know ourselves and get honest about what we need in order to follow through on heartfelt, genuine health goals!

Are you frustrated, mad, disappointed, dissatisfied, annoyed or any other negative feelings toward your doctor? I completely understand. Every day I hear stories from my patients about how they are not feeling heard or understood by their primary care providers. Today I talk about how, if you feel this way, you are NOT ALONE and what to do about it. We should all display compassion toward others, especially those who are burnt out or work in centralized medicine. BUT we also have a right to GOOD CARE and often need to advocate for ourselves. Give a listen if you can relate!

“Starvation mode” is when one goes through periods of prolonged caloric restriction and the body’s systems start to slow down. You might feel hungry, tired and cold- think crash diets where you lose a bunch of weight over the course of weeks or several months and then as soon as you start eating normally again you regain the weight and sometimes a few extra pounds along with it! When you fast- intentionally and intelligently- your busy will not go into starvation mode or slow down. In fact, your body’s metabolism will increase. In this segment I talk about the difference between fasting and crash diets, caloric restriction and “starvation mode.”

Many people, especially women, get diagnosed with weakened bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis) by a certain age. They are told to take calcium and exercise. This simple, nonspecific advice is not enough. Inevitably, many people end up with worsening bone health over time, end up in pain and it becomes harder to reverse as time goes on. In this short segment, I talk about what bones are made of and why taking calcium and being told to exercise is not enough.
Should you take RYR to lower your cholesterol naturally? Maybe not. Find out why in this episode.
