What’s a smart house? For the longest time I didn’t care what that meant – which is incredible when you consider I work in a data center where the ideas of the whole world live! There are deep learning tools that are available to us today that have the power of magic. I can create a photorealistic image of an orangutan cowboy riding a glass lizard, just by using the power of language. I can speak something into existence, and most times you can't tell that a machine created it. That's pretty cool. Now, I don't know how valuable that picture would be, but the potential of the technology is incredible. That doesn't just happen in the world of fantasy and images, but in the world of poetry, creative writing, and who knows where else it will go. And that begs the question where is the line between machine and human reality and imagination? About Our Guest As an Associate Professor of Computer Science and a Director of Machine Learning at the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging & Data Science, I like to keep things busy. Probably for that reason, I have three kids, two cats and a dog. I travel often, moved a few times recently, and have painted rooms and houses everywhere I go.
My research focuses on developing computational instruments that enable knowledge extraction from observational multimodal data collected at different temporal and spatial scales. I believe we can provide the neuroimaging community with a more robust, reliable understanding of directed connectivity in the brain.
We can’t just poke around in living human brain to see how it works. I and my collaborators are honored to have received $1.3 million from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to study causal connections in the brain. Here are only a few of my other accomplishments:
- Published one of the first demonstrations of the versatile potential of deep learning methods for the field in 2013 and since then my group developed a number of deep learning approaches to neuroimaging.
- Developed the theories in complex time series including a number of algorithms creating a new subarea in causal research.
- Developed efficient algorithms for matrix factorization.
- Enabled research on federated datasets with a focus on preserving privacy, inspiring a project for creating a framework to enable research on decentralized data.
It's impossible to have a conversation about A.I. or machine learning without also talking about neural networks. The thing is, most of us think we know what it is, and some of us have an opinion on what machine learning is. But very few people actually know what a neural network is; why it matters? Do these networks evolve like the human brain? What are the ethical implications of building an infrastructure like that? Are they secure? My conversation today is with Sergey Plis, a professor of computer science at Georgia State University and the director of Machine Learning at the Center for Translational Research in Neuro Imaging and Data Science (TReNDS). He and his collaborators received funding recently from the NSF and the New Age to study casual connections in the brain. Obviously, Sergey likes to keep things busy. As an Associate Professor of Computer Science and a Director of Machine Learning at the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging & Data Science, I like to keep things busy. Probably for that reason, I have three kids, two cats and a dog. I travel often, moved a few times recently, and have painted rooms and houses everywhere I go.
My research focuses on developing computational instruments that enable knowledge extraction from observational multimodal data collected at different temporal and spatial scales. Steven Beckwith is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. His 40-year research career spans a many interests including the formation and early evolution of extra-solar planetary systems, the evolution of young stars, and the birth of galaxies in the early universe. In 2004, he led the team that created the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, the deepest visual image of the universe, resulting in the discovery of the most distant galaxies ever seen. He has published approximately 200 articles and won several international awards for his work. He lectures worldwide and advises organizations in the United States and Europe on research policy.
He received his BS in Engineering Physics from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. He returned to Cornell in 1978 as an Assistant Professor of Astronomy and stayed on the faculty for 13 years. In 1991, he moved to Germany as Director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg, directing the institute's scientific program and the German National Observatory in Spain. He returned to the United States in 1998 as the Director of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was responsible for the science operations of the Hubble Space Telescope. He became the telescope's leading public spokesman after NASA announced in 2004 that it would no longer service the telescope, successfully advocating for its continued operation (NASA reversed its decision in 2006). After stepping down as Director, he became a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University and a Distinguished Research Scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute. In 2008, he was appointed Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of California systemwide office and a Professor of Astronomy at Berkeley. In July 2014, he left the Office of the President to resume his research at UC Berkeley.
The Internet is a network of networks. It's built across fiber, satellite, and subsea cables that span the globe. It seems really resilient; there isn't a single off switch. But you already knew that. What we don't talk much about is the infrastructure that supports it and to some degree, it's vulnerability. I recently learned that we have a tool that converts carbon to oxygen. Think about that. It seems like every conversation around energy is also at some level about carbon. Dr. Eric Hinterman helped build and manage a tool called Moxie, which is a device that pulls carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it to oxygen. Eric recently joined Space X and before that he was at MIT and Blue Origin and other places where smart people congregate. Moxie is intended to be used in space travel, in space colonization, where there is an abundance of carbon and little, if any, oxygen. Today, the power required to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen on earth would be counterproductive, to say the least. Eric Hinterman holds a PhD from MIT in Aeronautics and Astronautics and works with NASA on MOXIE, an instrument on the Perseverance rover that produces oxygen on Mars. He attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate studies, where he received a degree in Chemical Engineering. After working in the chemical industry for several years, Eric returned to school to pursue graduate degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics. Cars are in at least their second major innovation; the technology involved in electric vehicles is incredible. The potential within autonomous vehicles is staggering, especially when you think about their impact on safety, reliability, efficiency, the environment, etc. We as a society are talking about those things. However, you know what we're not talking about very much? The roads. Those pieces of asphalt and cement we drive on. We have almost 4 million miles of roads in the United States, and we almost never talk about innovation within our roads and where it needs to go. But, it's happening now, and believe it or not, it is an incredibly compelling discussion. It's just not very sexy. Well, that's about to change because my guest this week is Allie Kelly. His research focus also includes consumer and Enterprise networking requirements and analysis the Communications Service Provider strategies as they transform to implement new business models.

Prior to joining Probe, Mr. Munroe was Associate Director of Global Telecom Service Markets at Northern Business Information. He has also worked at DRI/McGraw-Hill, an economic forecasting company.

About Our Guest Dr. Nicholas Guise is a Principal Research Scientist and Associate Chief of the Quantum Systems Division at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). He has led research programs in secure quantum communications, scalable quantum computing with microfabricated ion traps, and molecular information storage. He currently serves as principal investigator for the Scalable Molecular Archival Software and Hardware (SMASH) program, an interdisciplinary IARPA-funded effort to develop technologies for large-scale DNA data read/write operations. The SMASH team, including partners from the biotech industry, is currently producing nanofabricated “DNA microchips” for massively parallel synthesis of DNA, combining new techniques from synthetic biology with the proven manufacturability and scalability of CMOS control electronics.

Dr. Shawna Pandya is a Canadian physician, scientist-astronaut candidate program graduate with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS), aquanaut, speaker, martial artist, advanced diver, skydiver, pilot-in-training, VP Immersive Medicine with Luxsonic Technologies, Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medicine Association, and Fellow of the Explorers’ Club. She is also Director of the IIAS Space Medicine Group, Chief Instructor of the IIAS Operational Space Medicine course, Director of Medical Research at Orbital Assembly Corporation, clinical lecturer, podcast host with the World Extreme Medicine’s WEMCast series, Primary Investigator (PI) for the Shad Canada-Blue Origin student microgravity competition, appointed member of the ASCEND Guiding Coalition, Life Sciences Team Lead for the Association of Spaceflight Professionals, and sessional lecturer for the “Technology and the Future of Medicine,” course at the University of Alberta. She serves as medical advisor to several space, medical and technology companies, including Astreas, as well as the Jasper Dark Sky Festival Advisory Committee. Dr. Pandya holds degrees in neuroscience (BSc Hons. Neuroscience, University of Alberta), space (MSc Space Studies, International Space University), and medicine (MD, University of Alberta), and a certification in entrepreneurship (Graduate Studies Program, Singularity University).
Dr. Pandya was part of the first crew to test a commercial spacesuit in zero-gravity in 2015. Dr. Pandya earned her aquanaut designation during the 2019 NEPTUNE (Nautical Experiments in Physiology, Technology and Underwater Exploration) mission. She has also completed centrifuge studies, emergency spacecraft egress and sea survival training, and wilderness medicine training. She previously served as Commander during a 2020 tour at the Mars Desert Research Station. Her expeditions were captured in the Land Rover short, released with the Apollo 11: First Steps film. She previously interned at ESA’s European Astronaut Center and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Her publications include book chapters on space technologies that have benefitted terrestrial medicine, psychological resilience in long-duration spaceflight, and reproduction and sexuality in long-duration spaceflight.
Dr. Pandya is a seasoned speaker and has given keynotes all around the world, including TEDxEdmonton 2010, TEDxUAlberta 2016 on Success, Failure, Resilience and Pushing the Limits, TEDxISU 2019 at the International Space University on “Discovering Exploration,” and in former Canadian Prime Minister Rt Hon. Kim Campbell’s Peter Lougheed Leadership College Leadership Lecture Series on Emotional Intelligence. Martin is also the consulting artificial intelligence expert for the Rise of the Robots equity index from Societe Generale, which is focused specifically on investing in companies that will be significant participants in the AI and robotics revolution. Dr. Brendan Englot is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he has been a member of the faculty since 2014. Brendan has fifteen years of experience developing and deploying mobile robots and autonomous navigation algorithms via land, air and sea. At Stevens, he is the founder and director of the Robust Field Autonomy Lab, which develops robust autonomous navigation solutions for mobile robots operating in harsh and unstructured environments. His research uses artificial intelligence to improve the situational awareness of mobile robots operating in degraded conditions, and to enable intelligent robot decision-making under uncertainty. Brendan received S.B., S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007, 2009 and 2012, respectively. At MIT, he studied motion planning for surveillance and inspection applications, deploying his algorithms on an underwater robot to inspect Navy and Coast Guard ships. During 2012-2014, Brendan was with United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Connecticut, USA, where he was a Research Scientist and Principal Investigator in the Autonomous and Intelligent Robotics Laboratory and a technical contributor to the Sikorsky Autonomous Research Aircraft. Brendan received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2017, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award in 2020, and in 2018 he was appointed the Geoffrey S. Inman Endowed Junior Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. Brendan also serves as Interim Director of the Stevens Institute for Artificial Intelligence (SIAI).

Artificial Intelligence is just one of the areas having a profound effect on ethics. This week Dr. Paul Root Wolpe the director of the Center for Ethics at Emory University, talks with me about the impact of technology and what it will mean to be human in the digital age, on the next QTS Experience.

Schinazi Distinguished Research Chair in Jewish Bioethics; a professor in the departments of medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neuroscience and biological behavior, and sociology; and the director of the Center for Ethics. Dr. Wolpe moved to Emory University in summer 2008 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was on the faculty for more than 20 years in the departments of psychiatry, sociology, and medical ethics, and faculty in its Center for Bioethics.
Dr. Wolpe spent 15 years as senior bioethicist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He is the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Bioethics Neuroscience and sits on the editorial boards of more than a dozen professional journals in medicine and ethics. He is the president of the Association of Bioethics Program Directors; a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities; a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the country's oldest medical society; and a fellow of the Hastings Center, the oldest bioethics institute in America. He also served as the first national bioethics adviser to Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
His publications span the fields of sociology, medicine, and bioethics, and he has contributed to a variety of encyclopedias on bioethical issues. A futurist interested in social dynamics, Dr. Wolpe focuses on the social, religious, ethical, and ideological impact of medicine and technology on the human condition. Considered one of the founders of the field of neuroethics, which examines the ethical implications of neuroscience, he also writes about other emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence. His teaching and publications range across many other fields of bioethics, including death and dying, genetics and eugenics, sexuality and gender, mental health and illness, alternative medicine, and bioethics in extreme environments such as space. He frames those discussions through his sociological interest in knowledge formation, ideology, religion, and social movements. He also writes and talks about the Jewish contribution to thinking about the ethical aspects of medicine and technology. He is the co-author of the textbook Sexuality and Gender in Society, and editor and a key author of the end-of-life guide Behoref Hayamim: In the Winter of Life.
Dr. Wolpe has served on a number of national and international nonprofit organizational boards and working groups, such as Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence Selection Committee and DARPA’s Neuroscience ELSI Panel. He has testified twice to the President's Commission on the Study of Bioethical Issues in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Responsible Science Committee that rewrote the canonical volume “Responsible Science,” and Co-Chaired the American Psychological Association’s Ethics Commission looking into reorganizing the APA’s ethics procedures in response to disclosure of its participation in ‘enhanced interrogation’ collaboration with the CIA and Department of Defense. He is also a consultant to academic institutions and the biomedical industry.
A dynamic and popular speaker internationally, Dr. Wolpe has been chosen by the Teaching Company as a "Superstar Teacher of America," and his courses are distributed internationally on audio and videotape. He has won the World Technology Network Award in Ethics, has been featured in a TED talk, and was profiled in Atlantic Magazine as a "Brave Thinker of 2011." Dr. Wolpe is a contributor to broadcast and print media, as well as having been featured on 60 Minutes and profiled in the Science Times of the New York Times.

Carberry has presented oral (and written) testimony to both the United States Senate as well as the United States House of Representatives and has been active in all levels of policy engagement with both the Executive and Legislative branches of government.
In recent years, he has overseen Explore Mars’ annual Humans to Mars Summit, the largest annual conference focused on sending humans to Mars. He has also spearheaded dozens of programs including the Mars Innovation Forum, the annual Community Workshops for the Achievability and Sustainability of Human Exploration of Mars series, the AR/VR and Space workshop series, the ISS and Mars Conference in Washington, D.C. and in Strasbourg, France, and the Women and Mars Conference in Washington, D.C. He has also conducted programs overseas, in such countries as the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Carberry is also the creator, and one of the senior editors, of the annual publication known as the Humans to Mars Report that was highlighted in the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017. In 2013, Carberry was awarded a NASA Group Achievement award.
Carberry is the author of over 100 articles and Op-Ed pieces that have appeared in such publications as USA Today, US News and World Report, Huffington Post, The Washington Post, San Jose Mercury Times, Foxnews.com, Houston Chronicle, The Hill, The Telegram (UK), The Boston Herald and many other publications. He has been featured in over 100 national and international television, radio programs and podcasts such as NBC Nightly News, Fox News, CNN, BBC World, and NPR and is frequently asked for commentary from print news outlets around the world.
Prior to joining Explore Mars, Carberry served as Executive Director of The Mars Society. He also played a leadership role in congressional outreach events such as the 2006-2020 Space Exploration Alliance Legislative Blitz and has coordinated numerous briefing panels and other events on Capitol Hill over the past two decades. Carberry serves on the Board of Advisors for iGiant and Mars World Enterprises, and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Space Society.
Carberry is the author of the 2019 book, Alcohol in Space: Past, Present and Future, and the upcoming book, The Music of Space (to be released in 2022). Both volumes are being adapted into documentary films.
Prior to his space career, Carberry worked as an archivist of modern political papers and was research assistant for numerous best-selling biographers.

David S. Ginger earned dual B.S. degrees in chemistry and physics at Indiana University in 1997 with departmental honors and highest distinction, performing undergraduate research with Victor E. Viola.
He received a British Marshall Scholarship and an NSF Graduate Fellowship and completed his Ph.D. in physics with Neil C. Greenham in the Optoelectronics group at the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2001.
After a joint NIH and DuPont Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University in Chad Mirkin’s lab, he joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle where he is currently the Alvin L. and Verla R. Kwiram Endowed Professor in Chemistry, Washington Research Foundation Distinguished Scholar in Clean Energy, and Adjunct Professor of Physics, and serves as the Chief Scientist of the Washington state funded UW Clean Energy Institute. He holds a joint appointment as a Senior Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL), and is the co-founding co-director of the Northwest Institute for Materials Physics, Chemistry, and Technology (NW IMPACT), a joint research collaboration between PNNL and UW.
He is an elected fellow of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) and has been named a Research Corporation Cottrell Scholar, a Research Corporation Scialog Fellow in solar energy conversion, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, and has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and the ACS Unilever Award in Colloid and Surfactant Science.
He is the 2012 recipient of the Burton Medal of the Microscopy Society of America, participated in the 2012-2013 class of the Defense Science Study Group, and was honored as a Finalist for the Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists in 2016.
His research centers on the physical chemistry of nanostructured materials with applications in optoelectronics, energy and sensing, and his group makes use of techniques ranging from scanning probe microscopy to optical spectroscopy.
He is also an Associate Editor at the ACS journal Chemical Reviews.

To redefine Mancini as a top design firm, Christian has sparked industry-wide change drawing inspiration from some of the tech-forward companies Mancini works with—like Google, Peloton, Disney, and Soho House —focusing on technology that can propel the world of design forward.
Christian saw a unique opportunity to recalibrate Mancini’s approach — emphasizing technology to transform the way designers across disciplines work. He launched a research & development incubator – dubbed the Design Lab – which brings together designers, technologists, and clients to leverage technologies like Virtual Reality, 3D Printing, Drones, Generative Design, and Artificial Intelligence to break barriers limiting design capabilities. What began as an internal incubator, it has quickly grown to disrupt the way the design process is facilitated.
Christian is a member and board member of the prestigious Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and also serves on the advisory board of New York Building Congress and Ranney School.
He received his Bachelor’s of Architecture from University of Miami and his Masters of Architecture from University of California, Los Angeles where Frank Gehry was his professor.

Edwina Payne is an accomplished executive with extensive experience in life sciences, technology strategy, digital transformation, program management, cyber security, internal audit, manufacturing, and distribution.
Edwina currently serves on the board of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta. She serves on the Audit, Enterprise Risk and Compliance, and Governance and Compensation committees. Edwina also serves on several nonprofit boards, including the Purdue Polytechnic Dean’s Council at Purdue University as well as the Technology Advisory Board at Marian University. She is active in the Georgia community, having served on the board of Tech Alpharetta, which helps grow technology and innovation as well as support technology start-ups in the city of Alpharetta. She is currently a member of the advisory board for Georgia CIO as well as Inspiredu, a nonprofit providing access to technology for Atlanta’s underserved youths.
Edwina is the Chief Information Officer for Varsity Brands, where she leads the IT strategy and IT operations of their three divisions. She has held multiple roles in the life sciences space, most recently at McKesson Corporation where she was the Senior Vice President, Technology Strategy. She was responsible for McKesson’s technology strategy, enterprise portfolio management office, as well as the overall enterprise architecture design used to deliver products and services to both internal customers as well as healthcare professionals who use McKesson’s software platforms.
Prior to joining McKesson Edwina was Chief Information Officer at Avanos Medical (formerly Halyard Health). At Avanos Edwina’s team delivered the company’s first digital product, On-Q*Trac, which enabled health care professionals and patients to better manage their post-surgical pain. She led the IT divesture activities of their Surgical and Infection Prevention portfolio, including the sale of Avanos’ legacy IT assets with the divestiture, which funded the IT transformation for their remaining business.
Edwina has more than 30 years of global supply chain and information technology experience, including directing strategic initiatives and leveraging technology to help organizations become more competitive. She began her corporate career at Kellogg Company, where she held leadership positions in the United States as well as Brazil and Mexico. Following Kellogg, Edwina joined Johnson & Johnson in 1999 in their DePuy Orthopaedics medical device unit. She assumed roles of increasing responsibility, including CIO for DePuy, eventually serving as vice president and program manager for a global ERP deployment for Johnson & Johnson’s medical devices and diagnostics business. After leaving Johnson & Johnson she joined Zimmer Biomet, where she was Vice President and Chief Information Officer. She led their IT organization’s transformation, creating a global organization focused on delivering competitive advantage for the Company. Under her leadership the IT team successfully completed the acquisition and integration of Biomet.
Edwina earned her bachelor’s degree in computer technology from Purdue University in 1986. She is an active thought leader and presenter in a variety of industry and professional organizations. In 2009 Edwina was named a Distinguished Alumni by Purdue University, was recognized as a 2012 CIO 100 award winner from IDG, was a finalist for Georgia CIO of the Year in 2018 and was recognized by HMG as a 2019 Top Technology Executive to Watch. Edwina is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

Dr. Kammen is the Class of 1935 Distinguished Professor of Energy at the University of California, Berkeley, with parallel appointments in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the department of Nuclear Engineering. He was appointed the first Environment and Climate Partnership for the Americas (ECPA) Fellow by Secretary of State Hilary R. Clinton in April 2010.
Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL), Co-Director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, and Director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center. He has founded or is on the board of over 10 companies, and has served the State of California and US federal government in expert and advisory capacities.
Dr. Kammen was educated in physics at Cornell and Harvard, and held postdoctoral positions at the California Institute of Technology and Harvard. He was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Science, Technology and Environmental Policy Program at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University before moving to the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Kammen has served as a contributing or coordinating lead author on various reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1999. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He serves on the Advisory Committee for Energy & Environment for the X-Prize Foundation.
During 2010-2011 Kammen served as the World Bank Group’s Chief Technical Specialist for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. He was appointed to this newly-created position in October 2010, in which he provided strategic leadership on policy, technical, and operational fronts. The aim is to enhance the operational impact of the Bank’s renewable energy and energy efficiency activities while expanding the institution’s role as an enabler of global dialogue on moving energy development to a cleaner and more sustainable pathway.
He has authored or co-authored 12 books, written more than 300 peer-reviewed journal publications, testified more than 40 times to U.S. state and federal congressional briefings, and has provided various governments with more than 50 technical reports. Dr. Kammen also served for many years on the Technical Review Board of the Global Environment Facility. He is a frequent contributor to or commentator in international news media, including Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. Kammen has appeared on 60 Minutes (twice), Nova, Frontline, and hosted the six-part Discovery Channel series Ecopolis. Dr. Kammen is a Permanent Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Physical Society. In the US, he serves on two National Academy of Sciences boards and panels.

The rest of the year is dedicated to supporting post-9/11 veterans with two programs. Warrior Week, Camp Southern Ground’s signature workforce and wellness transition program, helps veterans in the transition to civilian life after military service. Warrior PATHH (Progressive Alternative Training for Healing Heroes) aims to facilitate post-traumatic growth among combat veterans struggling with PTSD and/or combat stress. Trey Hawkins was a co-founder and chief technical officer of Virtex Networks, Inc., one of the nation’s first IT infrastructure service providers. Virtex was acquired by Leapfrog in 2001. Prior to founding Virtex, Trey ran Computer Associates’ enterprise software training center in Atlanta, Georgia under a contract with RightSource Inc. During his tenure with RightSource, he honed his expertise in implementing and supporting enterprise management technology used by Fortune 500 companies. As an undergraduate, Trey managed Emory University’s computing services, where he was responsible for several major upgrades and improvements to their sophisticated computing lab.
Trey is currently a member for InfraGard, a cooperative undertaking between the U.S. Government, businesses, academic institutions, and state and local law enforcement agencies that are dedicated to increasing the security of United States’ critical infrastructures. Trey was nominated for the Atlanta CIO of the year award in 2014 and also served on a special committee to help select the CIO of the City of Atlanta and is currently serving on a committee to select a new CIO for the Atlanta Public School System. Trey is a board member and trustee for the Grace Foundation and graduated from Emory University where he earned a double major in Philosophy and Education.

Dr. Kammen is the Class of 1935 Distinguished Professor of Energy at the University of California, Berkeley, with parallel appointments in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the department of Nuclear Engineering. He was appointed the first Environment and Climate Partnership for the Americas (ECPA) Fellow by Secretary of State Hilary R. Clinton in April 2010.
Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL), Co-Director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, and Director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center. He has founded or is on the board of over 10 companies, and has served the State of California and US federal government in expert and advisory capacities.
Dr. Kammen was educated in physics at Cornell and Harvard, and held postdoctoral positions at the California Institute of Technology and Harvard. He was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Science, Technology and Environmental Policy Program at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University before moving to the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Kammen has served as a contributing or coordinating lead author on various reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1999. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He serves on the Advisory Committee for Energy & Environment for the X-Prize Foundation.
During 2010-2011 Kammen served as the World Bank Group’s Chief Technical Specialist for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. He was appointed to this newly-created position in October 2010, in which he provided strategic leadership on policy, technical, and operational fronts. The aim is to enhance the operational impact of the Bank’s renewable energy and energy efficiency activities while expanding the institution’s role as an enabler of global dialogue on moving energy development to a cleaner and more sustainable pathway.
He has authored or co-authored 12 books, written more than 300 peer-reviewed journal publications, testified more than 40 times to U.S. state and federal congressional briefings, and has provided various governments with more than 50 technical reports. Dr. Kammen also served for many years on the Technical Review Board of the Global Environment Facility. He is a frequent contributor to or commentator in international news media, including Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. Kammen has appeared on 60 Minutes (twice), Nova, Frontline, and hosted the six-part Discovery Channel series Ecopolis. Dr. Kammen is a Permanent Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Physical Society. In the US, he serves on two National Academy of Sciences boards and panels.
