It is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and so today we're having a tough but important conversation with Chaney from Heaven's Gain Ministries.

We'll be talking about:

  • The disenfranchised grief of infant loss during pregnancy
  • Collection options at home and at the hospital for burial
  • Memorializing babies who have passed away
  • How parishes can help couples experiencing a miscarriage
  • Encouragement for couples who were not able to bury their baby

If you have suffered the traumatic loss of your baby during pregnancy: "Your grief is valid, your story is valid, and we want to be here for you."

God loves you, and so do we.

Happy feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux! This episode is a "rose" to take with you today as we reflect on this great saint and her "little way" of growing closer to Jesus.

St. Thérèse received particular graces from God in her life that helped her reach an incredible level of holiness. Even though she lived within the walls of a Carmelite convent, she is the patron saint of missionaries and is even a Doctor of the Church. Her sanctity, sweetness, simplicity, virginity, and vocation to the religious life may make it hard to relate to St. Thérèse at first – especially when we're feeling the weight of the cross of infertility and its effect on our marriages. But there is so much we can learn from this saint even though our lives may look very different from hers.

Will you let St. Thérèse send you a "rose" today?

Adoption is a beautiful pathway for fruitfulness, whether or not a couple struggles with infertility. When a couple decides to explore adoption and go through the process, they invite a child into their hearts and their families, which is a beautiful fruit of their love. This week's special guest is Christina Valenzuela, a certified NFP instructor, owner of Pearl & Thistle, LLC, and author of a new book entitled, The Language of Your Body: Embracing God's Design for Your Cycle. NFP charting is an important activity and can benefit our lives and our marriages immensely, however, sometimes during a season of infertility, we can become hyper focused on the chart and it becomes a major distraction depleting the health of our marriage or preventing us from being fruitful in other ways. One of those examples of fruitfulness we dive into is the idea of radical hospitality. Let's not miss what else God might be calling us to during a season focused on our chart.

In the second of two episodes recorded with special guest Victoria Cerise, we dive into what marriage prep didn't prepare us for and how we can help enhance it for future couples. A lot of good comes from Catholic diocesan marriage prep courses, however, preparing a couple for the cross of infertility is most often not part of the discussion. Listen in for ways that dioceses and parishes can open up conversations around infertility in marriage prep, and consider offering these suggestions and the tools available from Springs in the Desert to your diocesan Family Life director or pastor!

This week Jillian and Ann welcome special guest Chris O'Neill, Director of Marriage and Family Life for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Chris not only speaks to the reality of the suffering of infertility, but the important role those struggling with it play in the Church. Chris draws from the wisdom he gained from his formation at the John Paul II Institute, his own personal experience, and his growing understanding of the struggle and potential fruitfulness of this cross through ministering in the Archdiocese. The path of infertility can feel like a lonely walk, but this conversation encourages those on the path to know that the Church sees them and is walking with them.

The Springs in the Desert Team is on summer break - but we'll be back next week with another full length episode! Please enjoy this replay episode on focusing on Christ, not conception. This is an important reminder for all of us as we walk the path of infertility, but especially as we deal with decisions regarding treatment and charting our cycle (it is NFP Awareness Week, after all!)

Jillian and Christina discuss the idea of hope and how—even through ups and downs, and when the desires and dreams in life don't turn out the way we envisioned—we have the certainty of our "Great Hope" in Christ. Let's anchor our hope in Him today as we continue to walk this path together!

Our special guest this week is Jamie Rathjen, founder of the Fiat Institute, a program which trains women across the U.S. to become hormone coaches. Her mission is to better help women understand their hormone health by offering suggestions for natural lifestyle changes that can help make a difference in their hormone health.

For many of us on the path of infertility, charting feels like something we must do as a means to accomplish a goal. When charting feels forced—even exhausting—Jamie asks listeners to consider where we can find our "feminine genius" in the process. She reminds us that women are more than our "signs and symptoms," and that charting is a helpful tool, but it's just part of our health and infertility stories.

Jillian sits down with Dr. Megan Reister and Alissa West to listen to their personal stories of walking the path of secondary infertility. This conversation reminds us that there are all different types of infertility and no two paths are identical. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a physical community of friends in your area who understand how you're feeling or the place you're in. That's why Springs in the Desert was created! We want to remind you that this community is for you: you do belong here!

Prayer:

O Lord, I come to you with a gracious heart for trusting me with the souls of your children. Help me to be a worthy example of faithfulness, love, and trust in You. Let me never take for granted how precious their lives are. Let me never forget the intense longing felt while navigating the waters of infertility, or the elation and relief upon their birth. Help me to be a gentle, patient, and understanding mother, remembering that each day with them is a gift.

Lord, as I navigate through the waters of motherhood, I find myself between two worlds of women: those still experiencing infertility, and those who have borne children. I can't help but feel guilty as though I've left the first group behind, while simultaneously feeling misunderstood in the latter group as I carry the scars of infertility; scars that most mothers don't fully understand.

I pray that those still longing for motherhood find fruitfulness in all the gifts You bestow them. I pray that those women with effortless fertility find wonder and awe in the miracle of life. I pray that those who find themselves in between find camaraderie among all women. I pray that women find their place in Your glory no matter their circumstance—infertile, fertile, and anywhere in between.

Amen.

In this episode, Stacey, Allie, and Abby discuss the temptation many of us feel to achieve fertility "at all costs" - from the pressure to take every last pill and undergo every procedure to believing the lie that God will withhold a baby if we choose to take a break from treatment. We share honestly about these temptations to make fertility an idol and speak the truth about our relationship with the Lord and our identity as His daughters. We also discuss how we are learning to trust and listen to Him above all the other voices, and to rest in His love. Listen in and know that you're not alone!

In this episode, Allie and Cassandra welcome new guest and Springs in the Desert team member Jillian Kubik to share her story of how the Lord is helping her grow in her vocation as a wife, through her adventures as a “roamin' ” Catholic, and through the experiences of infertility and loss. In our discussion, we recall the importance of rest: from the Spanish siesta to God the Father Himself resting on the seventh day to the words of Our Lord, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The Lord wants us to give Him all of our burdens, including infertility. In our last episode for 2021, Ann is joined by Springs in the Desert team members Cassi and Ian for an open conversation about Advent and Christmas in a season of infertility. Waiting for Jesus can be hard when accompanied by waiting for a gift (a biological child) that we may never receive. Cassi and Ian share their infertility story, including the moments of emptiness that can still challenge their ability to enter fully into the season. They speak candidly about how difficult it can be to “see miracles” in the midst of infertility, and the necessity of looking to the Holy Family not as an unattainable ideal, but to find solace and encouragement in the great hardships and struggles they faced. Christmas is the season of “God with us,” and even when we can’t quite perceive Him, He is travelling this path with us every step of the way.

In today’s episode Ann welcomes two special guests, Stacy and Todd Stephenson, who are members of our Springs in the Desert community. Stacy and Todd share their story of love, marriage, and infertility, and we chat about experiencing the holidays during a season of infertility. Though the holidays are a time of joy and celebration, they can be difficult to navigate and elicit sadness for many of us; for example, when we are separated from family, have lost a loved one, or while we are struggling with infertility. In this conversation, we explore the many ways we can find joy as families of two during Advent and Christmas, by seeking to build up our marriages and strengthen our own domestic churches. Listen in to find accompaniment and encouragement for the season ahead!

Resources:

Praying together helps us grow closer, and be open to receiving the peace of our Savior. Stacy and Todd pray the Novena to Christ the King. We also suggest praying the Saint Andrew’s Christmas Novena during Advent.

Read Stacy and Todd’s post on the Springs in the Desert blog: We Are a Family

Quick Tips:

Pray together! Bring any sadness or other emotions to the Lord. Be vulnerable as He came into this world so small and vulnerable.

Deck the halls! Incorporate ornaments, music and food from your families of origin, and put your unique spin on them to create new holiday traditions.

Share your favorite holiday memories with each other. It’s a great way to learn more about each other and strengthen your bond.

Open your home to others in hospitality and share the Christmas cheer! But take time with each other, too, to listen to Christmas music, watch a movie or just sit quietly in the glow of Christmas lights.

Today, we talk honestly about healing and infertility. For some of us, healing in a season of infertility may mean eventually conceiving and giving birth to a child. But many of us are trying to conceive and becoming exhausted and discouraged. Some have received a definitive diagnosis that makes the possibility nearly, or absolutely, impossible. Others are entering menopause or are now past childbearing age, yet still feeling the pangs of pain from a desire that will not be fulfilled. For all of us, the questions remain: Can I be healed? What does healing look like for me? How has God been working in my life to heal me already?

Kimberly, Ann and Cassandra discuss the pain of infertility feels like and how it can be described, and think together about what healing in our infertility even looks like outside of conceiving and giving birth. They reflect on how God has touched their lives so far and acknowledge that grief and healing can be a lifelong process. Finally, they share some practical ways that we can cooperate with God’s grace in order to invite Him into our pain, as we place our hope of being healed in Him alone.

Although we may not think of it in this way, infertility is often as much a spiritual battle as it is a physical and emotional one. Even as we are told to “relax” and “just enjoy ourselves,” we do all the things to try and conceive, which puts pressure on us, causes stress, and perhaps leads to lack of faith in the God who loves us and wants what is good for us.

In this episode Ann, Cassandra and Kimberly get real about the negative thoughts that can destroy our peace, and how the Evil One tries to “push our buttons” to make us believe God is punishing us, withholding His gifts, and even that He doesn’t really love us. They share their personal experiences of battling negativity and offer practical suggestions for turning negative thoughts into opportunities to see God’s grace in abundance. Finally, they share the truth that every woman, regardless of her struggle with infertility, is a beloved daughter of God!

This month we warmly welcome Cassi to the podcast to chat with Stacey and Allie about the truth that God made each and every woman – regardless of whether she bears biological children – to be a mother; that is, to love, nurture, and raise others up to God in a way that is uniquely feminine. We call this “spiritual motherhood”. We chat about our own misconceptions about spiritual motherhood, what this motherhood looks like lived out in examples from our own lives, what we can learn from priests and religious, and how truly beautiful it is that all women, including those of us carrying the cross of infertility, are called to mother right now, just as we are.

“The body, and it alone, is capable of making visible what is invisible, the spiritual and divine. It was created to transfer into the visible reality of the world, the invisible mystery hidden in God from time immemorial, and thus to be a sign of it.” (Pope St. John Paul II).

We begin the New Year welcoming Cassandra Taylor to the podcast to tell her story of romance, marriage, travel – and a cancer diagnosis that dashed her hopes of ever bearing a child. Allie, Ann and Cassandra talk about how our hopes and dreams for marriage and the expectations we bring into that relationship can be turned upside down, either breaking us or becoming an opportunity to build a stronger marriage that holds unexpected possibilities for fruitfulness.

Read more about Cassandra’s story on our blog (https://springsinthedesert.org/author/cassandrataylor16/). We talked about St. Teresa of Calcutta – a superstar saint and intercessor who had “great expectations” in following the Lord, yet lived for decades in “spiritual darkness.” Nevertheless, she continually surrendered herself to Jesus’ mercy. We recommend a collection of her letters, Come Be My Light. Here’s the money quote assuring us that no matter how we feel, Jesus is suffering with us, transforming us, loving us: “In you today - He wants to relive His submission to His Father – allow Him to do so. Does not matter what you feel-as long as He feels alright in you. Take away your eyes from your self and rejoice that you have nothing - that you are nothing - that you can do nothing. Give Jesus a big smile – each time your nothingness frightens you.”

They shared struggles and challenges, as well as the good fruits of prayer for their marriages, and in carrying the burden of infertility.

Special thanks for this episode to Andrea Mahoney, Phil and Stacey Huneck, Kimberly Henkel, Fr. Paul and Alissa West, and Keith and Ann Koshute. This podcast would not be possible without the skill and dedication of our Producer, Kathryn Wood.
