In this episode, Jon and Sandra are joined by Andy Hurley, Operations Director from Marine Zero, Ben Turner, Innovation Engineer at UK Power Networks and Mark Hadfield, Project Manager from LCP Delta to discuss the Electric Thames project. As the Thames undergoes significant changes to support the net zero goal, the Port of London Authority (PLA) has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2040. Electric Thames is an innovative initiative designed to help reach this objective through vessels powered by batteries and hydrogen, as well as by providing Vessel-to-Grid capabilities.

Andy Hurley has extensive maritime operational and management experience, having worked in professions linked with the sea throughout most of his working life. Andy holds an unrestricted Master Mariners certificate and has worked within the senior management group at the RNLI. More recently Andy has led several projects for a Plymouth based passenger vessel operator, including the development of the UKs first fully electric seagoing passenger vessel. Andy has also worked with the Cornwall Marine Hydrogen Centre to assist them with the development of the UK's first hydrogen fuel cell test rig designed for use on small commercial and pleasure vessels and supporting the development of training for hydrogen and electric vessel operation.
Andy has an excellent working relationship with the leading classification societies and MCA.
Andy has worked on multiple projects at Marine Zero, working with the Port of London Authority, A&P and Sea-Kit as well as with local authorities, universities and many commercial port and vessel operators.
As an Innovation Engineer for UK Power Networks, Ben Turner develops cutting edge solutions to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the distribution network in London and the South East.
His role consists of researching, managing and implementing innovative technologies to make the network safer, more efficient and better equipped to facilitate the transition to net zero.
Electric Thames is a great project to be involved in as it brings together so many different people across a variety of organisations and industries. I hope that our coordinated approach to the decarbonisation of the Thames will find a solution that everyone can benefit from.

Phillip has a career spanning 20 years in energy sector, including time spent in central bodies and commercial organisations. Jon and Sandra talk with Sergey Kiselev, Chief Business Officer at ZeroAvia, a UK/US-based company developing a hydrogen-fuel cell powertrain for light and medium-sized aircraft and Brendan Murphy, Head of Hydrogen at LCP Delta.
Sergey Kiselev is Chief Business Officer at ZeroAvia – a leading innovator in decarbonising commercial aviation, focused on the development of a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain for commercial flights. Sergey is based out of the company’s facility at Cotswold Airport in Kemble, UK.
Prior to joining ZeroAvia, Sergey led the European operations of eMotorWerks, which developed smart vehicle-grid integration hardware and software and was acquired in 2017. eMotorWerks’' JuiceBox Smart EV charging station is still the best selling product in its category in the United States for the last 5 years.
A decade leading into this, Sergey worked as a partner at McKinsey, focusing on energy, sustainability and the public sector. Sergey obtained his PhD and conducted postdoctoral research in experimental low temperature physics and nanomagnetics at Cornell University in the US.

Brendan boasts over a decade of dedicated expertise within the dynamic realms of energy and low carbon sectors, such as Heat and Hydrogen. His wealth of experience spans intricate policy and regulation, adept program management, and shrewd commercial acumen, covering a diverse spectrum of domains.

Lucy is a Non-Executive Member of the Board at the Connected Places Catapult and E3G, and an Associate Fellow of Technology and Public Policy at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.
Izzy is Director of External Affairs at Centre for Net Zero. She gets the Centre’s leading research into the hands of influential global stakeholders, driving bolder policymaking and an accelerated energy transition. Izzy is a specialist in strategic communication, with a background advising major global blue chips. She spent many years advising Centrica and bp, helping them to pivot to integrated energy companies by supporting their corporate venturing teams. She led campaigns that supported and raised the profile of their investment portfolios of high potential, green start-ups. She holds a degree from the University of Cambridge.

As heat pumps, solar panels (often with batteries), and EV chargers sales grow, we’re seeing the emergence of ‘one-stop shops’ providing customers with a portfolio of low carbon products and services for their homes. In this episode we talk with Christina Hepp, Director of Innovation and Intelligence at sonnen and New Energy Business Models Research Manager, Nigel Timperley. We’re circling back to LCP Delta’s ‘Energy Supplier of the Future’ narrative and exploring sonnen’s journey – and Christina’s own thoughts – in relation to the growing convergence between energy retail and energy management.
Christina Hepp is Director of Innovation and Intelligence at sonnen, responsible for understanding and analysing changing market and customer needs to develop new business opportunities and models. Since joining in 2019, Christina has played a crucial role in maintaining sonnen’s pioneering position in the industry.
Christina holds a master’s degree in Sustainable Resource Management from the Technical University Munich. During her studies she contributed to a government-funded project on local flexibility markets at the Research Center for Energy Economics, focusing on defining the market design required to monetise small-scale distributed assets.
Prior to this, Christina graduated with a bachelor’s in international relations and environmental studies from Franklin University Switzerland, establishing the foundation for her career in environmental awareness and innovative energy solutions. She also worked in sustainable finance roles at Allianz and Unicredit.
Nigel has 26 years of experience in the energy industry including spells at Distribution System Operators (DSO), suppliers, metering companies and in energy engineering. He has also worked in financial services, the UK civil service, and as an IT consultant.
Nigel has worked for the last 17 years within the new energy sector, leading a wide range of consultancy and research projects, and running a start-up in the energy space, focused on community energy. His main interest is in the commercialisation of innovative propositions, he has been heavily involved in trials, demonstrations, and market development. More recently, he joined LCP Delta where he continues to work for multiple clients, with a strong focus on the commercial aspects of the transition.

In this episode we explore how the worlds of the energy transition and investors are meeting. We’re joined by two guests – Mark Watts, Partner at LCP, who has a long career in the investment world, and and Sam Hollister, Head of Market Insight who has a background in energy but recently been working closely with investors.
As a partner in LCP’s investment team, Mark supports the provision of solutions for our clients as they grapple with the energy transition and the path to net zero. He is a former Chief Investment officer and CEO at a number of firms and has 35 years of investment experience. We work closely with the LCP Delta team to ensure that we offer seamless advice to our clients in this area and are able to help them navigate the critical issues and deploy their capital effectively.
Sam works within LCP Delta analytics team and leads on our external engagement and market insight. He has over 10 years’ experience within energy policy and public affairs having been a Senior Director at the leading energy trade association and most recently leading the policy team at one of the UK’s largest energy retailers.

Clean hydrogen is becoming an important elements of many country’s decarbonisation strategies. As supply and demand grows, so will storage requirements. We’ll see a lot more electric heating in the energy transition. Much of this will be from heat pumps – air to water, ground to water, air to air and more – but if we look at the electric heating landscape today across Europe, direct electric heating makes up the majority of electric heating. Direct electric heating’s 1:1 electricity to heat ratio is no match for heat pump’s 2.5, 3 or even 4:1 ratio, but it comes with a lower cost and greater simplicity. One of the key differences between ‘old energy’ and ‘new energy’ is where capital investments are taking place. Many thousands of thermally driven heat pumps – driven by combustion of natural gas – have been installed across Europe. While boilers are efficient, thermally driven heat pumps are a step higher, as they capture low grade heat from the air, operating at efficiencies of 160% and more. Europe has built up one of the best gas distribution infrastructures in the world. There’s one problem though. It distributes natural gas, a fuel that we will hardly be able to use if we’re to reach our net zero targets. Can we use the infrastructure instead for clean hydrogen – either blended with natural gas as a stepping stone, or with pure hydrogen in the future? In this episode we put aside discussion on the extent to which we should do this – and focus on whether or not we can do this, and what’s involved in doing so.
