On March 15th 2019, Darren Smith became inmate #1474625, as he was sentenced to 60 days in the Jennifer Road Detention Center in Annapolis, MD for a DUI conviction. Suddenly, Darren goes from living in a world without limitation, full of promise and adventure, to being in a state of absolute confinement. All the while, his career, and the resources he's worked to attain up to this point, are hanging in the balance.

This year, “Rotary Crabs To Go!” will replace the Club’s traditional crab feast held annually at the stadium on the first Friday in August. While the coronavirus crisis has made the traditional gathering of 2,000 guests impractical this year due to social distancing requirements, the funds generated by the event to benefit the community are more important than ever.

He talks about growing up as an African American in Annapolis. Carroll tells stories of how one of his early jobs was drag racing for money. He talks about doing puppet shows at the old Annapolis "White" Library. How his father rose as a prominent businessman and developer in Annapolis is discussed. Mr. Carroll Hynson, Jr is a true inspiration.
Author and Annapolitan Jessie Dunleavy talks about the memoir she wrote that tells the story of her son, Paul, a boy whose learning differences constrained his connections with others and whose poetry depicts an inner life otherwise unknown, and her staunch advocacy for him, from the fight to obtain an appropriate education through the fight for his life as he entered the harrowing world of addiction. Today's guest is Monica Alvarado of Bread and Butter Kitchen in Eastport. She discusses the #feedannearundel initiative and how it is a win-win-win for Anne Arundel. This idea came from the organization Anne Arundel Communities Together (ACT). ACT is working in conjunction with a cohort of restaurants across the county and they have partnered with the Anne Arundel County Partnership for Children, Youth, & Families to address food insecurity in our community. The idea is simple: pay restaurants across Anne Arundel County to prepare healthy, nutritious meals for those in our community in need. While this is by no means a profitable venture, the end results create a win-win-win: We are keeping people fed, keeping people employed, and keeping businesses afloat.

This week host Scott MacMullan talks to Mary Ostrowski. Mary is an educator for more than 15 years, working as an elementary and high school teacher, an administrator, and most recently as the Head of School for a private school serving grades PK3 - 12 in the Republic of Panama. She recently acquired Weems Creek Nursery School in Annapolis (the founding family had a 46-year run!). Her niche lately has been guiding children and their parents and teachers in nurturing the "soft" skills of learning -- that is, life skills such as organization and time-management, conflict-resolution, analyzing right vs wrong, questioning why, and problem-solving to name a few. Based on her experience teaching, she feels it's these types of skills that are the foundation upon which all academic learning builds. The stronger children are in these life skills, the more organized, confident and resilient they are to manage the ups and downs that come with academic learning. With that passion leading the way, she added a coaching certification to her educational background, and founded Healthy Equation -- a coaching practice supporting the healthy development of children's behavioral and organizational skills through a focus on strategies specific to boys versus girls as based on research of gender learning differences.

Mike talks about the current water access points in Annapolis; environment justice and access for people of limited means; and water quality issues. Sandy is a substance abuse prevention specialist at the Anne Arundel County Department of Health (her views are her own and separate from Anne Arundel County), President of Dockside Solutions and is a current applicant for The Anne Arundel County School Board. Scott first met Sandy when he was chairing an event for the Annapolis Human Relations Commission regarding opioid and heroin abuse. Sandy was a part of the "Not My Child" panel at this event held at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center. "Not My Child" is an awareness initiative about the dangers of heroin and opioid abuse in our communities. This week Scott MacMullan interviews Annapolis native Christian Smooth. Christian is a true product of Annapolis. He went to Tyler Heights Elementary School, Annapolis Middle School and, finally graduated from Annapolis High School. While at Annapolis, he was a two-time Anne Arundel County cross country champion. He went on to graduate from Morgan State University, where he began making films. Christian recently directed the film "Ration Day" which will be shown March 11th, 2017, with many other films, at the Iconaclash Cinema Review. For more information, check out the Iconaclash website here. The back story is Christian aspired to have his film in the Annapolis Film Festival and it was rejected. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he went out and organized a new festival. You gotta respect that.

Host Scott MacMullan interviews Vince Leggett this week on the podcast. Vince is the founder of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving black maritime history and environmental advocacy. Vince's childhood was a unique mix of being "straight-out-of-east baltimore" to enjoying hunting trips to the eastern shore of Maryland with his father and brothers on weekends. These weekend trips to the Eastern Shore piqued his passion for the Chesapeake Bay. Over a 20 year period, Vince has collected a warehouse full of history on black watermen. He talks about the "contested space" that is the Chesapeake Bay. In 2003, Vince was bestowed the honor of "The Admiral of the Chesapeake" by the Governor of Maryland. This is the highest honor a Governor of Maryland can bestow on a private citizen in the environmental field. This year Captain Eldridge Meredith, a 92 year old black watermen on the Eastern Shore, has been named "The Admiral of the Chesapeake." Vince goes into the characters he has met through out his investigations and research into black watermen. He talks about his book, "The Chesapeake Bay Through Ebony Eyes." We talk about the differences and similarities between black watermen and white watermen. Vince is a brilliant man, diligent researcher and true asset to the Annapolis community.

Specifically, she got interested during the Fawcett's redevelopment plan a few years ago. Elly used to be a construction manager so this potential development piqued her interest. She talks about how the residents lost downtown when they lost Stevens Hardware Store. Jay has spent the past three years actively documenting all aspects of the fascinating and rapidly changing way of life of those who make their living from the resources of the Chesapeake Bay. He has travelled thousands of miles around the Bay's watershed, photographed hundreds of individuals, and dozens of fisheries: with the goal of documenting all aspects of the industry. From underwater shots of watermen diving for oysters, to crabs shedding their shells, to incredibly poignant portraits of workers in packing houses, Jay will illustrate the full spectrum of the industry in his first book, Working the Water. Fleming hopes that his documentation will accurately depict the different businesses that depend on the water as well as portray the cultures on and around the water.
