Mentioned in the Show

BrainPickings.org http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2013/10/17/ok-plateau/ Facebook.com/BrainPickings https://www.facebook.com/brainpickings.mariapopova

Three phases of acquiring a new skill 1. Cognitive phase-- Learning the skill. You make alot of mistakes and it's uncomfortable.

  1. Associative phase--start getting good at the skill. Make fewer mistakes. Get in the grove

  2. Autonomous phase-- Muscle memory kicks in and you don't even think about it any more. you are good enough at it. You are not motivated to improve.

3 Techniques to get of the Good Enough Zone

  1. They focus on improving performance and technique
  2. They focus on the end result they want to achieve
  3. They seek feed back regarding their performance

Deliberate practice is more important that number of hours practiced.

Progress is more important than mastery

Dialed In For Success Episode 14—The Arrival Fallacy

Show Notes

I first heard of the arrival fallacy on the Internet Business Mastery podcast

Comes from the book Happier by Tal-Ben Shahar

The Arrival Fallacy—“The false belief that reaching a valued destination can sustain happiness (p.25)

As you get closer to the event, you adapt to your environment and return to your happiness setpoint

CORRECTION: at 3:30 into the podcast, I reference Jim Belushi as an example of the arrival fallacy. In fact, I meant to reference his brother John Belushi. Jim Belushi is alive and well.

Types of Arrival fallacies

  • The Happiness Arrival Fallacy: I’ll be happy when….
    • Something has to happen before I will give myself permission to be happy
  • The Readiness Arrival Fallacy: I’ll be ready when…
    • Something has to happen in order for me to feel worthy of having something in my life
  • The Enlightenment Arrival Fallacy: I’ll understand when…
    • Something has to happen before I can be a better person or live life by higher values

Source: Venkatesh Rao Live Life, Not Projects

http://www.tempobook.com/2012/02/20/live-life-not-projects/

All arrival fallacies are based on the idea that whatever you want to experience comes from outside yourself.

The decision to be happy or ready or enlightened is determined by a decision to have that in your life.

Take-Away

Make a decision to be happy or ready or enlightened. Regardless of what you want in your life, make a decision to have it today.

You can purchase the Go-Giver From Amazon. (Affilate Link)

The Five Laws of Statospheric Success

1 – Law of Value. Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

2 – Law of Compensation. Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.

3 – Law of Influence. Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first.

4 – Law of Authenticity. The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.

5 Law of Receptivity. The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

Sam Crowley: Everyday Is Saturday

http://SamCrowleyShow.com

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” ~Henry Ford

My Wage

“I bargained with Life for a penny,

And Life would pay no more,

However I begged at evening

When I counted my scanty store.

For Life is a just employer,

He gives you what you ask,

But once you have set the wages,

Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial’s hire,

Only to learn, dismayed,

That any wage I had asked of Life,

Life would have willingly paid.”

-Jessie B. Rittenhouse

Belief doesn’t work! Only certainty works

Everything you have must be focused and directed toward your goal. Only certainty backed by specific, focused action brings results.

If you’re not a little nervous about your goals and decisions, then you’re playing too small ~Tony Rush

Big decisions make us nervous because of “Or Else”

“Or Else” is our worry of what will happen if we fail. For example, “I have to achieve my goal or else I’ll lose $1500.00”. The bigger the goal the Bigger the “Or Else”

Making a big decision or having a big goal stretches us. It forces us to do things we wouldn’t do otherwise.

The Ladder of Success

  • The wall represents life
  • The ladder represents where you are on your journey through life
  • Everyone is standing on different rungs of the ladder
  • The person at the top and the person at the bottom are going to have a hard time relating.
    • The person at the top may not remember what it's like to struggle.
    • The person at the bottom has no idea of what the person at the top had to do to get there.
  • Most influence happens between those who are on the same rung, just above or just below each other.
    • Help those just below you come up to your level
    • Model those who are above you so you can reach their level.

1. Have – Do – Be

If I had__________

I would do_______

Then I would be_______

For example: If I had more time, I would play with the kids, and then I would be a great parent.

This thinking can hold you back because it forces you to wait for conditions to be right before you allow yourself to be who or how you really want to be.

  1. B. Be – Do – Have

Start from a state of mind in which you believe yourself to already be as you want and let your actions flow from you believe yourself to be.

I am_________

Because I do __________

Because I have_______________

For example: I am a great parent because I do play with my kids on a regular basis because I have made time to be available to them.

Dialed in For Success, Episode 2: The Secret Life of Goals

You have to follow your calling. Don’t let fear stop you.

Review of last week’s Podcast

  1. I used to hate goal setting because the way it was taught to me was boring and I heard it again and again.
  2. Standard Corpoarte Goal Setting:
    1. S.M.A.R.T. Goals
    2. Specific, Measurable, Attainable/Achievable, Realistic, Timebound
    3. The Law of Familiarity: Anything you are exposed to repeatedly, you tend to take for granted.

This Week’s Podcast

  1. Seth Godin interview really opened my eyes to goal setting secrets.
    1. Goals are a tool for keeping an agreement with yourself. They’re like a lever. They pry you into action. You don’t want to break a promise with yourself. It’s easier to achieve the goal than break the promise to yourself.
    2. The reason people don’t set goals is that once they write down the goal, they have to take responsibility for their lives and that scares them to death.
      1. Tracy Trost of the Successful Life Mindset podcast calls it pre-quitting. “I’m going to fail so why try?”
      2. When you set your goals, the critics will come out. They have a vested interest in you NOT CHANGING
      3. Achieving goals has a snowball effect. Start small and use each victory as a steping stone to the next one.

Purpose, Vision, Goals, Commitment, Decision and Passion.

Purpose: What we are here to do.

  • Manifests as, “God, why am I here?”
  • Purpose is our ultimate destination in life.

Vision: How you fulfill your purpose. Vision is the roadmap to achieve your purpose.

Different visions can feed the same purpose. For example, if my purpose is to inspire others, my vision can be to be an author, a speaker or an entertainer.

Goals: Mile markers on the way to success.

  • Signs we are taking the right roads on the way to our ultimate purpose.
  • When goals come from purpose and vision they come alive.

Decision and commitment: Without decision and commitment, purpose, vision and goals are useless.

  • Commitment means that no matter what you will find a way to make time for your goals.
  • Commitment accepts no excuses.
  • Interest means it would be nice if it happened but it’s ok if it doesn’t.

Passion: Fuel for your car.

  • Passion fuels decision, goals, vision and purpose.
  • Renew your passion by reminding yourself of your purpose.

Definition of Success from Famous People

Maya Angelou:

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.”

Bishop T.D. Jakes:

“Success is about discovering your purpose and achieving it within your lifespan.”

John Wooden:

“Success, to me, is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you were capable. Success is coming as close as possible to reaching your maximum potential at whatever task you’re involved in.”

Tony Dungy:

“I would define success as doing the absolute best that you are capable of doing. That’s not the same as winning every game—it’s being as good as you could possibly be.”
