Atheists Talk Radio Show is a weekly production of Minnesota Atheists. It airs in Twin Cities on AM 950 KTNF at 9:00 AM Sunday mornings or stream live at http://www.am950ktnf.com.

Minnesota Atheists is Minnesota's oldest and largest atheist organization. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, educational organization that seeks to promote the positive contributions of atheism to society and to maintain separation of state and church.

Our bylaws are available here. Each year we hold eight monthly members meetings with guest speakers (Jan.-May, Sept.-Nov.), three picnics (June-Aug.), and a Winter Solstice banquet (Dec.).

We have a full calendar of events, such as dinners, movie nights, game nights, discussion groups, book clubs, a how to debate class and many others. To find out about these events, sign up for A.W.E. - Atheists Weekly E-mail.

We produce a public access cable TV program, "Atheists Talk," and a weekly podcast of the same name.

We offer speakers to the community free of charge. We specialize in presentations to high school and community college comparative religion classes.

The conversation today is with virologist Dr. Richard Allen Wjhite the 3rd, virologist and CEO of Raw Molecular Systems LLC, and is going to focus on Covid-19.  While we just had a conversation about covid-19 last month, we felt there has been so much change on this topic in the last 6 weeks, that another conversation would be useful and informative.

Rob Ray, atheist and host of the podcasts Secular Yakking and Sparky on Ice joins us to discuss his year living and working in Antarctica.  Sparky on Ice was a one of a kind podcast, recorded and published from the continent of Antarctica.

Among the many points of this conversation is a discussion of how scientists catch penguins for studying.  I've linked a video, and now I only want to visit Antarctica even more than previously.

Dr. Vincent Racaniello, is Higgins Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Mount Sinai School of medicine, Columbia University New York. He has been studying viruses for over 40 years, starting in 1975, when he entered the Ph.D. program in Biomedical Sciences at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York. His thesis research was focused on influenza viruses. In 1979 he joined the laboratory of Dr. David Baltimore at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for postdoctoral work on poliovirus. In 1982 Vincent joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City. There he established a laboratory to study viruses, and to train other scientists to become virologists. Over the years his laboratory has studied a variety of viruses including poliovirus, echovirus, enteroviruses 70 and D68, rhinovirus, Zika virus and hepatitis C virus. As principal investigator of his laboratory, he oversees the research that is carried out by Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows. He also teaches virology to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as medical, dental, and nursing students. His virology lectures are available online at iTunes University, YouTube, and Coursera.

Personally I listen to Dr. Racaniello on his many podcasts including This Week in Microbiology, This week in parasitology, this week in evolution, and of course, this week in virology, the podcasts about viruses, the kind that make you sick.

When I first invited Phil Session to the show, he had to turn me down. He had a conflict with an Atheists Helping the Homeless event he was coordinating. He’s a busy man these days, having recently joined the boards of Recovering From Religion and Foundation Beyond Belief. But this Sunday, Phil will join me to talk a little bit about the stereotype of community volunteers as religious and about finding or creating volunteer opportunities for atheists.

Once upon a time, we thought artificial intelligence would be less racist than people. After all, machines are objective, right? Then we started teaching them how to think and made some discoveries of our own. When racism permeates our society and our IT infrastructure, how do we teach machines to do better than we do?

This week, we spoke with Alix Jules about the point where technology, cognitive sciences, and sociology collide.

The nonreligious population of the U.S. has grown significantly in the last couple of decades. We're relatively young. We're only a minority non-believer. But who are we? What issues are important to us? What do we want from the secular organizations that represent us.

Today we're talking with Alison Gill, American Atheists' Vice President of Legal and Policy, about the U.S. Secular Survey. This is an ambitious survey with a goal of getting a better picture of American nonbelievers and other nonreligious populations, now and for the future.

We talk a fair amount in the secular movement about the non-religious as a growing political force. We should. We are. But the problem is that we don’t have a lot of data about how we behave as voters. Truth be told, we don’t even always have a good picture of who we are. We just know there are more of us than there used to be.

Juhem Navarro-Rivera is a political scientist working to shed light on the topic. His latest project is the Secular Voices Panel, which will survey secular voters during the 2020 campaigns. Juhem joins us this Sunday to talk about why this work is important and what he’s already learned.

You'd think that a movement that's so focused on growing wouldn't want to chase off a large chunk of their potential membership. You'd think an organization dedicated to supporting that constituency within the larger movement would be considered useful instead of unwanted. The history of Secular Woman demonstrates that reality is way more complicated than that. Today's guest is Monette Richards, current president of Secular Woman.

Maddy and Hertzey talk to Dave Warnock a former evangelical Christian pastor and church leader for nearly 40 years, now an Atheist. Dave’s leaving the Christian faith came at huge cost with the loss of almost his entire community of friends, and family.

Earlier this year (February 26, 2019) Dave received the devastating diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), and this precious and brief life became infinitely more precious and incredibly brief.  Dave immediately decided to begin “Dying Out Loud” by living life to the fullest - traveling to see as much of the world as his body will allow, spending time with people he knows and loves, meeting new people and learning their stories, sharing  and most of all, just cherishing the beautiful “moments” life offers to all of us.

So, what does one do when given a fatal diagnosis as an atheist? Does one re-examine his earlier conclusion that God isn't there...that there is no heaven...or hell? What kind of meaning does life have when it becomes shorter than we thought it might be?

This week we are joined by Dr. Jeb Card.

Dr. Jeb Card is an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Anthropology at Miami University. He is the editor of The Archaeology of Hybrid Material Culture and the coeditor of Lost City, Found Pyramid: Understanding Alternative Archaeologies and Pseudoscientific Practices. He has been a co-host for the popular podcast Archaeological Fantasies and a repeat guest on the podcast Monster Talk. Jeb is joining us here today to discuss his latest book “Spooky Archaeology, Myth and Science of the Past"

Outside of scientific journals, archaeologists are depicted as searching for lost cities and mystical artifacts in news reports, television, video games, and movies like Indiana Jones or The Mummy. This fantastical image has little to do with day-to-day science, yet it is deeply connected to why people are fascinated by the ancient past. By exploring the development of archaeology, this book helps us understand what archaeology is and why it matters.

In Spooky Archaeology author Jeb J. Card follows a trail of clues left by adventurers and professional archaeologists that guides the reader through haunted museums, mysterious hieroglyphic inscriptions, fragments of a lost continent that never existed, and deep into an investigation of magic and murder. Card unveils how and why archaeology continues to mystify and why there is an ongoing fascination with exotic artifacts and eerie practices.

Richard D. Logan joins us today to discuss how we can continue to build and grow a secular society. While this is something Minnesota Atheists has been extremely successful with already, we felt it would be beneficial to get the points of view from others in the secular community who don't identify as atheists.

Richard is a retired Professor of Human Development. He has a BA in Anthropology from Harvard College and a PhD in Human Development from the University of Chicago. He has published on adolescent identity, American individualism, the emergence of the self through Western history, and the state of higher education. He also authored a book on the psychology of solitary ordeals, and another on the true survival story of a young girl lost at sea. He also chaired the Faculty Executive Committee. Since retiring he has served on several non-profit boards.

What is an atheist issue? American Atheists redefines what is an atheists issue. We will challenge the status quo. In doing so we will lay out a plan to fight for equality and the true separation of religion and government. If you are not happy with the way things are then the time is now to make a change.

Jim G. Helton is the National Field Organizer for American Atheists. After attending the 2012 Reason Rally, he co-founded the Tri-State Freethinkers and was appointed American Atheists’ Kentucky State Director. Under his leadership, Tri-State Freethinkers adopted the highway in front of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter and led a protest that received international attention. He played a key role in eliminating Gideon’s bible distributions in public schools and removing abstinence-only sex education.

Mr. Helton’s activism at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter landed him appearances in the 2017 documentary film Bill Nye: Science Guy and the forthcoming documentary We Believe in Dinosaurs. He has been quoted in countless news outlets, including The New York Times, Miami Herald, and Washington Post. He is a fixture in local media and has given interviews for international television specials in France, Switzerland, and elsewhere.

As National Field Organizer, Mr. Helton works with affiliates, local partners, and state directors to challenge religious privilege and fight to protect church/state separation at the local level by building coalitions around specific issue campaigns, including medically accurate sex education, LGBT non-discrimination ordinances, and religious exemptions.

Seth Andrews of The Thinking Atheist podcast joins us in studio.

From The Thinking Atheist about page:

"The Thinking Atheist is a website, radio podcast and online community which rejects faith as a suitable tool for living.

Far too often, faith (believing something without evidence) is celebrated, reason is distrusted, and people are encouraged not to ask questions, test the waters, demand evidence or think outside the religious box.

The Thinking Atheist icon is a symbol that reminds atheist and believer alike to engage the brain, to challenge even the most sacred of traditions/beliefs, to be passionately curious about our world and universe, and to never be satisfied with the charge, "You just have to take it on faith."

Enjoy our videos. Listen to the weekly radio podcasts. Connect with others through our forum and social media pages. And benefit from this wonderful and diverse community of freethinkers.

Assume nothing. Question everything. And start thinking."

This week's episode is a special one for me (Maddy) as I've been a fan of the Living After Faith podcast for almost a decade.  While I've chatted with both Rich and Deanna in closed facebook groups for podcasters, and on public posts, this was the first time I've been able to sit down and chat with two amazing people, who are also atheists.

This was a pre-recorded conversation, as schedules and holidays meant a regular Sunday morning radio appearance wasn't going to be possible.

This weekend a Christian art festival was held in Greenswood, Wisconsin, Athanatos Fest. Part of the festival included a debate between an atheist, and a long time Christian friend. We brought the atheist on this week's show to discuss the debate, talk about himself, and because he seems like a pretty interesting fellow all around.

Dan is a British public health specialist, formerly an ED nurse and aid worker for Doctors Without Borders, he has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, a masters in public health and a diploma in health & human rights. After achieving a philosophy degree (96-99) Dan decided he wanted to keep up the practice of debating, so he started visiting some very early internet discussion forums, and the most interesting ones were generally American. This led to some adversarial friendships developing with people (such as Tony, who is hosting the Christian Arts festival that he is here for) while Dan has stated he disagrees with Tony on about almost everything they still get on with very well, and they both have found the friendship to be valuable.

The Problem of Evil is a philosophical discussion that traditionally is attributed to the Greek philosopher Epicurious. While it predates the monotheistic religions that dominate many cultures today, it is still a relevant logical argument when talking to theists today.

In this episode August discusses his pamphlet on the subject, which you can obtain by sending an email to info@mnatheists.org or by emailing Atheists Talk at radio@mnatheists.org

David Gamut travels the world doing speaking event where he uses his skills as a mentalist to entertain as well as educate the audience on how to have empathy for one another, and how to have productive conversations with people we disagree with.

You can find David on twitter at https://twitter.com/DavidGamut

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidgamut/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/davidgamut

And stay tuned because we plan on having David back again in a couple of months, as we didn't get to everything we wanted to talk about today. Patreons can listen to an additional 30 minutes or so of conversation.

You may notice a background buzz in the intros and outros of each segment. There was a technical problem not noticed until the end of the recording, and while we have removed the buzz for the conversation, we were unable to isolate and remove it in the musical sections, and for this we greatly apologize.

Atheism is Non-Partisan

Minnesota Atheists recently hosted a candidate forum for those running for Governor, US Senate, US House of Representatives, Secretary of State, and Attorney General. We invited all candidates to answer the following question at the forum, either themselves or an official campaign representative authorized to speak on their behalf:

"How will your personal views on religion be separated from how you administer our secular government?"

Our opening speaker was Evan Stewart, a doctoral candidate in the department of sociology at the University of Minnesota. His dissertation work examines the political impact of the growing non-religious population in the United States.

We wanted to test the draw of the secular voter that has been on the rise in the past number of years. We encourage candidates from across the political spectrum to attend, as atheism is non-partisan, from the most liberal of liberal to the most conservative of conservative...atheism is not tied to any political ideology.

This week Hertzey and Joseph are happy to be joined via Skype by freelance writer and podcaster Nathan Dickey who has come on to discuss one of his favorite topics; the portrayal of religious apocalypses in cinema through the years.

Nathan hosts the Trolling with Logic and Leap of Doubt podcasts.

A Leap of Doubt is a podcast about a lot of things that orbit the central, overarching theme of secular humanism: philosophy, skepticism, atheism, science, feminism, social justice, mental health, and raw human experience.

https://www.patreon.com/aleapofdoubt

Trolling with Logic describes itself as: "A weekly skeptical podcast with an irreverent sense of humour. We've changed and evolved over the years in ways that would have Darwin spinning so fast in his grave angular momentum would phone in to complain. We currently focus on skepticism with a pop culture angle, looking at the science behind our favorite media.

In addition, we [TWIL] also undertake movie and TV review from those sublime cinematic masterpieces to those productions that make Tommy Wiseau look like Stanley Kubrik."

The debate about the appropriate bounds of humor broke out again last weekend with Michelle Wolf's performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, but it's been heated and ongoing for years if not decades. Who should be the target of jokes? What's off limits, if anything? If we put limits on comedy, will it die a pitiful little death or get stronger?

Our guest today is Leighann Lord. She's a stand-up comedian, one of the co-hosts of the StarTalk podcast, and writer of several books, including Real Women Do It Standing Up. She was one of the faces of the African Americans for Humanism billboard campaign and has performed at several atheist conferences. She joins us today to talk about being funny without being a jerk.

Maddy, Hertzey, and Marissa Alexa McCool are joined in studio by Amy Withawhy and joining us by Skype is Ami. Amy and Ami are the cohosts of the Secular Soup podcast, which is quickly becoming one of our favorite podcasts here at Atheist Talk. Patreon donors have access to an extended episode!

They described their show as:

"Welcome to the Secular Soup podcast! Your hosts are Ami from Texas and Amy from Minnesota, and we’re just two blueberries floating in a bowl of tomato soup. Tune in for real talk about atheism, feminism, politics, parenting, and whatever the fuck else we want to talk about because this is our show. And get ready for a whole lot of motherfuckin’ profanity. Buckle up bitches! It’s time to have some soup!"

Yeah, it's some of the most delicious soup we here at Atheist Talk have ever tasted, and Ami & Amy assure us that it is far better than anything Tom and Cecil of Cognitive Dissonance have ever produced. While we can't vouch for that last statement, we also can't argue with soup-er awesome guests like Amy & Ami.

Secular humanism in the U.S. has a reputation for largely addressing the concerns of middle-class white people. That reputation is currently being challenged by groups across the country but perhaps nowhere more strongly than at the Secular Social Justice conferences. In 2016 in Houston and this year on April 7 in Washington D.C., these conferences bring activists from the margins into the spotlight. As this year's conference describes itself:

Secular Social Justice is a platform for activists of color to address the ravaging effects of systemic racism, sexism, heterosexism, transantagonism, colonialism, and white supremacy through workshops, discussions, and coalition-building.

What does that mean in practical terms? Tune in this week when we're joined by Kansas City activist and organizer Diane Burkholder. Diane is the co-chair of the American Humanist Association's LGBTQ Humanist Alliance and a speaker at both the 2016 and 2018 conferences. We'll talk about what came out of last year's conference and what this year has in store.

Our guest this week is Deborah McTaggert of the Beyond the Trailer Park podcast. Hertzey and Maddy were guests on BTTP back in August, and we had so much fun we wanted to bring some of the fun back to Atheist Talk.

This is the entire unedited conversation with Nick Fish that we didn't have enough time to air on Sunday morning. Nick Fish is the National Program Director for American Atheists, and I was extremely happy to have the opportunity to sit down with him at Skepticon 10 in Springfield, Missouri earlier this month.

It was a great conversation with times of seriousness, times of laughter, and all the while feeling like I was chatting with an old friend. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.
