About Linda Mac Dougall:
Linda got her M.A. in Counseling Psychology because she sought answers to family dysfunction. She already had a background of working with the developmentally disabled population since high school. Following her ex-husband's career, she then moved to Hawaii and became a Federal advocate for the state of Hawaii's families dealing with their population of developmentally disabled. Today her focus has changed to the older adult population. She is a senior health advocate, massage therapist, holistic health practitioner, and management consultant for caregiving situations. As a senior herself, Linda is also an advocate for change in the old living space. Stories can immortalize the moments shared, the lessons learned, and the roller coaster of emotions felt on those occasions. So wouldn't it be nice to chronicle your family's adventures? Join your host, Mary Elaine, and guest, Ruthanne Warnick, founder of Capture the Journey, as they talk about creating a family legacy through stories. Fascinated with people's stories, Ruthanne shares the importance of capturing and preserving these stories with intentionality. She also talks about the benefit to the mental health of the person receiving the care when they hear the stories from people about their impact and the difference they have made in someone's life. So if you want to learn more about creating your family's memoir, tune in and enjoy!
Outline of the episode:
About Ruthanne Warnick:
She founded Capture the Journey in 2013 after becoming a Certified Guided Autobiography Instructor through the Birren Center for Autobiographical Studies. She had been gathering her family's stories for several years. Finally, she began to understand the importance and value of capturing the stories and experiences of past generations, adding her own experiences and life lessons, and sharing them with the next generation.
Like many others, she regrets the questions never asked and the time not taken to get more of the stories now lost forever. However, she was determined not to let that pattern continue, and her goal became inspiring and helping others to take action now, avoid regret, and create a legacy for their families.
Through Capture the Journey, she works with individual clients to capture and record their stories in multiple formats. In addition, she leads workshops guiding participants in writing and sharing their stories and experiences. She is also enthusiastic about speaking to groups about the importance of sharing family and personal stories, experiences, and life lessons, as the many ways to take action, avoid regret, stop procrastinating, and take action.
Her experience includes 30+ years of leadership in Hadassah, a national women's organization that supports advanced medical care and research, youth development, advocacy mainly related to women's health, and global humanitarian work. Advancing from the local to the regional and then national levels of leadership, she has been able to lead, engage, mentor and train other women to become leaders, as well as speak about the organization to a wide range of audiences.
When she is not busy capturing stories, she can be found walking the beaches in Oregon, hiking mountain trails, or working in her garden.

So tune in to learn more!

Wendy also experienced looking through the lens of caregiving through her mother caring for her in-laws, husband, and parents and finally caring for Wendy's stepfather.
Wendy has been care-deciding (and at times caregiving) for her 86-year-old mother over the past 9 years.
Through her coaching, Wendy works with caregivers who want their relationship with their spouse to be more of what it was, to have more energy to focus on their physical health, and not to be on top of everything.
Wendy holds a Certificate in Life & ADHD Coaching from Coach Approach for Organizers. Wendy is also a former Certified Professional Organizer.
Outside of her passion for coaching, Wendy loves traveling with her husband, Steve, to whom she's been married for 28 years. In addition, Wendy enjoys reading a good biography and is an avid Gilmore Girls fan.

Welcome to Caregiver Cast, I'm Mary Elaine Petrucci your host. I have a special guest speaker today, Rachel Donnelley, who will be speaking on End of Life tasks and logistics that everyone should be considering. And before I introduce her formally, I am going to read a little bit of her biography. So after many experiences with loss, including the death of her parents at a young age, Rachel founded black dress consultants, a consulting firm that helps individuals and families manage the unavoidable tasks and logistics of after loss and end of life situations.
Rachel is also a fundraiser extraordinary having worked in higher education fundraising for Agnes Scott College, Emory University, and Georgia Institute of Technology. Rachel serves on the board of directors on glove not lost in Atlanta non-profit that provides grief tools and free photography sessions for families facing terminal diagnoses.
Welcome to Caregiver Cast Rachel, Thank you, Mary Ellaine. Thank you so much for having me. I'm delighted to be here. Will you be able to pick up my interests last Friday? So let's, um, see if I can learn a little bit more about you. So can you tell us a little bit more about your background and how did your earlier career path relate to or inspire your current work in the space around helping families find closure after the loss of a loved one?
Right. Well, I've really, you know, I'm a people person. I love working with people. I love trying to solve complex problems. I love trying to be strategic. And so my experience is as a professional fundraiser and higher education, you know, allowed me to build long-standing relationships with families, um, coming up, helping to address complex problems.
They're working collaboratively to manage and allocate funds in that particularly in resource. Constrained environments. Um, so having built a lot of those skills have helped me not only personally, to administer, you know, as states, um, but helping families and individuals, uh, manage a lot of as unavoidable logistics that come with what I like to call the business of death.
Um, and also helping families. Um, reach their philanthropic goals and build a film, Profit legacy also translates a lot into them creating, um, the legacy that they want to pass on to their families after they're gone. So addressing all of those important little, um, parts of their legacy to create, um, that everlasting, those memories and traditions to pass on to their wealth.
That is a lot. Thank you very much for sharing that. Um, more about your background. I know that, um, just working with my family and knowing some of those logistics, that one has to plan, it's really nice that you can. Built these legacies, like you say, for, um, their philanthropic organizations or just for their family.
So I think that's wonderful. Right? Exactly. So what was the motivation behind the creation of black dress consultants? So I can just say it by quoting that old saying “Necessity is the mother of invention”. Um, I lost my father when I was in high school and then, my father was a physician. So I was used to accompanying him on home visits or patients being around, being around, um, in a sick patient.
Um, and then, so I was very comfortable with that environment, um, in those situations, but then my mom got sick and passed away. Um, after I had just gotten married and had two young children, and I had to take over Karen from her brother and my uncle who lives in a different state to manage his care, all his estate plans.
So being thrown into that environment, And those situations of probating, an estate settling and estate selling properties and furnishing, um, and you know, a person the entire lie, you know, both of my parents, all of their belongings that my mother had hung on to after he passed away was very daunting.
And you're really a lot of people in the business of death, managing those logistics. You're left to a lot of your own devices to have. Recreate the wheel and make a lot of decisions that you have no idea how to make, um, that are a lot are very, um, can be very hard. And you're in this grief stricken. Uh, state BrainPOP and you're tired and overwhelmed.
And so I think it's very unfair to expect family members and surviving loved ones to have to take on that. The sheer volume of decisions, tasks, logistics, paperwork. And because we don't talk about this a lot, we don't talk about the logistics of death and dying people wouldn't really know what to do. So it's like I said, you have to recreate that wheel every time.
So I wanted to create a service based on my own experiences to help fill in these gaps. I saw firsthand how trying to manage the care of a surviving loved one, find two unfurnished, male off death certificates may administer a probated estate. And yes, I had great Attorneys and Accountants and Financial Advisors that there's all that in-between, that's left to someone and to, to have to juggle that.
Well, having your own family, your own household full-time job. It's a lot. And I think that families and surviving loved ones deserve the space to grieve. They deserve to have someone there to help fill in those gaps. So I created the service that I would have. Thank you very much. And I wish I had known you earlier.
You could have helped out with some of my situations. I know it's very, then you understand you did it, but if you haven't, you know, it's very hard, uh, to have to realize and, and know how to manage these tasks. Most definitely. Yes. I know selling off assets and. Dealing with, you know, it's state sales and arranging funerals.
And all of that is, it is very daunting. I agree. So you, your company Black Dress Consultants, offer consulting services both before and after a loss. Can you explain the difference between the two? Yeah, absolutely. Um, so we can provide, you can be engaged to help family or client, both, both sides or in both buckets.
As I like to say Endless Life. So helping a family, whether they are just getting started with their estate plans and end of life wishes, or to help complement and enhance the work that they're already doing. Say with their estate planning Attorney or a Financial Advisor, and then helping address some of those blind spots that I have seen in working with clients and personally that I want to make help a plan button up and get organized.
So from anything, from making sure that their funeral preferences and wishes are documented and written down a chair who family, helping families get their digital estate organized, which is a huge part, um, of a state planning. And it's getting a bigger and bigger part of it. Um, as our online presence and lives continues to flow more seamlessly from paper to online.
So having people to get that organized, um, what is important to them? Like can talk about that legacy, meaning what are those traditions? Those, the physical photos, the stories that they want to make sure are preserved and shared with loved ones. So having addressed those blind spots and they supercharge their end of life in estate plans.
And then in the after loss, um, I sort of put it in the bucket of, you know, when you look at a job description, it says other duties as assigned. That's basically what I try to help family members address are those other duties as assigned. That fall outside of the realm of maybe what the funeral director or the estate planning attorney or the financial advisor is doing, helping them to complete the mail off paperwork's, you know, sending the death certificates, closing accounts, managing an estate sale, um, getting, um, physical property appraised and sold or donated.
Um, so just, it can be very garden variety just based on the circumstances, the situation over what's happening with the family. So, but what I do, what we do is try to meet that client where they are coming up with a customized roadmap, think of us as GPS for after loss. And we're going to come up with that personalized roadmap to navigate you in that situation.
That sounds fantastic. To have somebody else take care of all of those extra tasks that, yeah, we'd rather, we don't mind doing, but I guess, like you said, you can't really grieve and do it at the same time. Why and there maybe things that you can take care of, or, and then there are other things you're like, I just can't, I don't have time to deal with it, especially if we have a family.
But they live out of state, and they physically cannot manage logistics, um, buttoning up and settling in the state. We can help fill in and outsource those duties so we can be as involved as the family wants, um, either supplementing or really being the outsourced professionals to come in and manage those tasks and face.
I liked the way you said it, um, you customize your plan for all families, cause I'm sure everyone has different wishes and what kind of legacy that they want to leave. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. So we try to meet them where they are. You said that there were some blind spots in the end of life planning.
Can you give us an idea of what some of those are? Yeah. So I talked about a couple of them, you know, how do you want your family to remember you? How do you want to be brave, already want your family to raise you? And I know that may sound weird, but what, that can be a big point of contention for families, you know, I've seen adult children fight over the argue and not be able to.
Um, to an agreement on what to do with their father after he's passed away, you know, oh, well dad told me he wanted to be cremated. I never heard him say that, you know, the children are fighting and, you know, in some states you have to sign off the surviving loved ones have to sign off and they have to come to an agreement of what's going to happen to that body.
Um, so writing that down. Making sure it fulfills your wishes and sharing that with your loved one, your aging preferences. What does aging grace really or aging place mean to you and writing that down and sharing it? Same thing with loved ones. Have you looked into long-term care insurance? What about, um, you know, your Medicaid or Medicare or are you good?
Do we need to bring in somebody to review this. Um, do you want to go ahead and start downsizing and decluttering, go ahead and move into the agent life community to save your family, that, um, hassle down the road. Um, and then the digital estate is a huge part of it. Um, and then there could be some really fun parts of planning of, of, of end-of-life planning, being very intentional about.
No writing down those stories, those recipes, those traditions, maybe taking, making it a tradition Thanksgiving to sit down and go through family photos and writing down who all those people are on those photos. So that, that historical knowledge doesn't get lost. And, you know, being intentional about where are the photos maybe online?
How do you want to make copies for all your children's or they have them, like I said, being intentional and strategic about preserving and storing those items so that they're not lost after, you know, a loved one passes away, because I know there are a lot of times I know for, I cleaned out my, my grandmother's house that had been in my family for 120 years.
I just went through thousands of photos where I didn't know who those people were. That's very sad. That that whole historical knowledge is gone. I don't have anybody to ask. So I want to make sure that things like that are preserved for my family and I can help you achieve that. I think that's wonderful that you're, you can take all of that person's life and a legacy and.
Put it in, um, like you said, either digitally or when photos, just for the family so that they know their history and who the people are that they, you know, were there. Relatives and things like that in friends that they really enjoyed. So I think that's really, really critical. Yeah. And I can't stress enough that the digital state part of it in our lives no longer in file cabinets or physical folders, they're online, they're on devices, they're in the cloud.
Um, and making sure there are plans. Ahead of time and your family knows maybe how to unlock her phone or access your computer to get your contact list or, um, access what bills you've been paying online. That's very important to make sure that there's no identity theft protect you from the bank. Um, subscriptions or ongoing bills don't drain money from the state.
Um, so it's, you know, these are things that you have a mass over a lifetime. You want to make sure that they're preserved and protected for your family. I think you sounds like you've considered all those little details that families need to really consider when they're making, making plans before, or even after a loved one passes?
So in helping all your, um, plump families, what did they need the most when help navigating one a love one is before passing or after it's when the majority of my clients have been in the after loss states. Um, it's really helping to be that, that custom GPS for them. Um, helping them with navigating getting accounts closed, letting informing organizations or custodians on getting the service providers know about the passing of a loved one mailing off the death certificate.
Changing names as needed. Now I'm a notary, so I can sit down with them and go through all the paperwork that needs to be notarized and get that mailed off. Um, a lot of times just figuring out what to do with all that stuff. We have more stuff than we ever have. The.
And it can be hard to know this, this, this needs to be a praise. So sort of coming up with a customize. Um, solution for her items and putting them in different grouping them to figure out, to make a plan what to do with them, and then saying that sometimes just being that accountability partner to them those are the __.
Okay. We really need to figure out what to do with all of your old cell phones that have been sitting in a drawer we need to figure out. What to do with all of your husband's medications, you can't, they shouldn't just sit in your house. Right. Um, so gently, you know, but very carefully with kid gloves, helping that family come up with solutions and being that accountability partner for them.
That's fantastic. Um, so let's. We know that you're not a financial planner or an attorney. So how do you really differentiate yourself between those two, um, career paths? Yeah, so my goal is to compliment and enhance the work that's being done by this other professionals. I don't want to duplicate any work that's already been done.
You know, your estate planning attorney has already come up with a plan help you think through your, your remembrance of funeral wishes. Okay. Done. We don't need to do that. Um, so like I said, I want to help guide them and that advice, especially if you're in a probate, uh, situation, I want to help you fulfill your duties as the executive.
Under the guidance of an attorney. Um, so to make sure everything is being done. Know, according to the law and everything's kosher and done the right way. Um, so like, as I have a vast network of professionals that are in my network, that I can either not just in Atlanta, not just in Georgia, but all over that I can refer clients to.
And so I want that, that was the thing that was one hard thing for me. Is it navigating having a probate and a state and three different, uh, states? Oh my goodness. Finding, um, all of those professionals, um, sourcing all of them and finding the people that you could trust and that you knew, or you weren't going to do a good job.
So that's, I think where we can really add a lot of value is helping sources, vendors as professionals to help provide that continuum of care. Otherwise, it can be very destroyed and you're like, oh gosh, you've got to try to find an estate sale company and Poughkeepsie or, a probate attorney in Burbank. You know, it’s that can be a very daunting task.
So trying to be that one stop to help sources, vendors and professionals. That's great. I like we in healthcare say that there's this continuum of care. So it's kind of nice that you've kind of added onto that piece. Um, so thank you for that. We should do the same thing and help, you know, and during life that we in, in, in death, we should be treating people with those same, that same level of care and, and after loss.
I totally agree with that. I think it really does help the family when everything is planned out beforehand. Um, not to say that there may be some surprises in that journey going to be surprises there, you know, and they're all in. They're going to be situations where you know, that the death happened. And expectedly tragically.
You just weren't able to get things done in time. And that case, you know, I can also add a lot of value in helping navigate that. Um, but I just, you know, like I said, I'm a firm believer that every family deserves the space to rate. Um, and so giving them that gift isn't that valuable. Most definitely. I know it's just really hard when you're they have so many things to do and to plan.
And, um, like you said, find professionals to do like a real estate value on the house. The state sells all of that. I mean, you. Really need to have somebody like you to really help the process so that you don't have to spend a lot of time looking for someone when you can just go to you and your resources and have it all taken care of. Exactly , exactly , absolutely.
So what is, can you describe one of the most unique. Or a memorable experience you've had with the family after a loss. Gosh, um, you know, it's been, um, I've seen a lot of things, you know, and it's definitely never, uh, and I don't want to sound insensitive, but it's really never a dull moment and it's just, I love, that's what I really.
Um, enjoys being able to help problem solve for those unexpected things that come up that you weren't expecting. I was working with a client and the executor lived out of state that you could help, um, you know, um, decluttering, um, emptying a house to get it ready for sale. Family had Arctic to come in and gone through all the belongings and taken everything.
Either that they wanted or a value special to the family. And I was discharged with having the junk removal company come in and take everything. So we're really at the tail end of this process and getting it ready for sale. And, you know, I was still finding several things in the house, like copies of, um, the deceased passport or checking checkbooks, and that I was gathering up to make sure that those would be.
Shredded and not just thrown into a dump. And as, as the junk removal company was furiously, just throwing things in the truck. I noticed three big boxes that say. Um, cremated human remains. And, um, the family had not know that they're the humane, the cremated remains of their family members were still with this loved one.
So there were literally about to be thrown into the trunk to be thrown in the Dungeness. So I quickly grabbed all three of them and, you know, called the family. I think you want that you said, and they said, oh my gosh. Yes, absolutely. So went down. Good fun fact to know FedEx and ups will not, will not mail them.
You have to go to the U S P S to do that. So the lady at the task was quite interested to know why I had three. Sets if you made it cremated remains. And I did not have the answer to that, but now that off to the family, they were very appreciative that those didn't get thrown away. Oh my goodness. I can't imagine.
Yeah. So that was, that made me feel good that I was able to return those to the family. Most definitely. I hope then that they were able to put those remains in a cemetery. Yeah. Were important to them. Exactly. Wow. So how do people get in touch with you Rachel? How did they hear about you and your services? You know, the majority of my clients do come from one-on-one referrals.
What I think is super important, you know, the I'm so young, I want to, I want you to feel comfortable with working for me. And, and I think that one-on-one referral to my services is very, very valuable tool, especially in navigating a situation and end of life after loss. It's a very vulnerable time. It's a hard time.
Um, so I want people who feel comfortable passing along the name. Um, so I am, um, on Instagram, I get a lot of connections there. Facebook, I have a weekly Instagram lives. Um, I am of course, go to my website, black consultants.com and fill out, um, customer inquiry form that will come to me. I offer a 30 minute free consultation, um, to find out, you know, what's going on?

This is services that can be gifted to another one in need. Um, if they've just lost a loved one or. Down the road and you want to do more than send another castle roll or a ham. Um, and you want to provide practical guidance. You can purchase a package is $300. And that is right now, three hours of our services where it's usual, usually too.
So you buy two hours, give one hour for free. Nice. That can be gifted to anyone. And we will provide you with, um, a gift card or gift certificate to, to send to your loved one or family members. Well, thank you very much. All those gifts are just really amazing and being set. Um, one really needs, um, in an after loss situation. So thank you so much for providing all of those services to the listeners on caregiver cast.
Do you have any final words that you would like to leave with the audience? I know that this is hard. I want people to understand, to understand that I know that this is a hard topic. This is a hard thing to tackle. So I don't want to make light of that. Um, and I, you know, I, I think that end of life planning is the greatest gift you could ever give your face.
So I agree, help be a resource, be that accountability partner that gives me such joy, um, helping people to be prepared for. And giving your family the space debris. Um, so you can also prepay for our services. Um, but we're here, like I said, to help guide you through those transitions, come up with that customized plan and make sure everything's buttoned up for your family down.
Well, thank you very much. I like that idea of being an accountability partner. Cause I know some times, um, you tend to lose track of what you need to do or what other documents that you have to provide in order to, um, like you say probate the will and depending on the state that you're in. So thank you so much for being here.
Um, I think you have given the audience a lot of great information to think about and to do it now versus after a loss. So thank you so much. You're welcome Mary Ellaine. Thank you so much for having me. I'm so glad that you and I have connected, and I just loved that. That you do as a, as a former caregiver. I know it is a difficult road.
It's tough. So anything that we can do to provide resources and any reprieve. It's invaluable. Most definitely. I mean, that's really, one of the goals of caregivers is really to provide them with all the resources that they need and they should take advantage of now, um, so that they can leave that family legacy.
And everybody knows exactly. The person's wishes are. So I think that is the most important thing, um, is to plan everything in your life. So this is, um, going to be a great help. Thank you very much. Thank you, Mary Elaine. Thanks so much.
Welcome to caregiver cast. I'm Mary Elaine, Patricia, your host. My speaker today is Lisa Raber who will be talking to us about life insurance settlements. And before we get into our interview, I would just like to give you some background information regarding Lisa, Lisa Raber is president of Ray Berg, life insurance.
Uh, life insurance settlement, broker Lisa has been in the health and life industries for over 30 years. She has held executive roles at carriers, General Agencies and TPS. Ms. Ray Berg is energized by helping care professionals and their clients benefit from unwanted or unneeded life insurance policies.
By having access to many investor groups, Lisa Ray Berg, life insurance settlements can place more policies and realize a bigger return for the investor. Perfect. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Finance. In a master of arts degree in Organizational Development. Welcome Lisa to caregiver cast. Thank you.
It is a privilege to be here. Well, after talking to you initially, I, I learned so much from talking with you, so. Um, it's an area that I'm not very familiar with. So let's just start, who should talk to you about life insurance? Settlements? That's a really good question. And first of all, very few people know that our solution exists.
So don't feel bad that you didn't know anything about it. Um, people who should talk to me are. And anybody that does not want their life insurance policy anymore does not need it. Maybe it's become unaffordable. Or if somebody is looking for ways to pay for their care needs, we can be another way that there was, they can take this assets.
Because a life insurance policy isn't assets you own, and we purpose it into cash that can help people feel more comfortable and give them the care they want and need while they're here. Oh, I think that's amazing that I've that this is an untapped resource for caregivers. This is amazing. So when should somebody talk with you then Elisa?
Well, first of all, Not at the last moment, right? Because like a Real Estate transaction. And let me take a step back real quick, where my personal passion lies and you and I talked about this 500,000 seniors a year with. Well away from her life insurance policies literally walk away with little or nothing.
And we talked about it a bit earlier, right? Don't want, don't need can't afford whatever, but they, they walk away from them because they don't know that we're here. And, um, you know, Like, like real estate, right? We had talked about a life insurance policies and asset. You own any type of life insurance policies and assets that you own and like Real Estate, it can be sold for cash.
And that's what we do. So we're very, very similar to Real Estate. We're a three to five month process. However, if any of your listeners with saying, oh, Lisa, I need money. You know, a lot sooner than that still contact us because. We can fast-track that a bit for sure. Um, and shorten it a bit, but we can't, we can't shorten it so much that there's funding tomorrow
Right? So we do need a little time to do our job and market policies properly, but we can fast track it, but typically for what you were just asking me, and I said, don't wait till last minute. If we have a good three to five months, that is an ideal timeframe for us. Great information. Um, so how does one know if their insurance policy is worth good question?
The bottom line here is we don't know until we market it because it doesn't matter what I think my house is worth. Right. It matters what a buyer thinks my house is worth. But what I would suggest is once. Contacting, contacting me or a life settlement broker. Of course, at least let's talk about the policy and we'll be able to figure out, Hey, is this a good opportunity or not a good opportunity?
I will tell you that typically, if there are clients that are in our are in a caregiving situation and they need caregiving, that is going to be, um, a good opportunity for a life settlement. Um, because those policies tend to be more valuable. So I think that's really important for people to know, but yet talk to somebody who's a life settlements expert about that, because like I said, we'll be able to give you an indication, but from a pure numbers perspective, we are not going to know until we mark it because.
It's so specific to each client, their situation, what their policy looks like. And Frankly, what those policy premiums look like, how much premium is it investor group that I have to pay for the policy. Those are the people that are paying for policy. So the premium makes a big difference. Does it matter what type of insurance policy is?
No, that's the great news here. So a lot of, uh, even term policies have the potential to be sold. So I think that's really, really important for people to know any the type of policy itself does not matter. It's literally the policy details and the client details that make the determining factor. That's really good to know.
So if somebody wanted to get, um, stop paying logline long-term care insurance, they can also come to you and find, well, we're still sorry. I apologize. I did not mean to interrupt. We don't sell long-term care insurance. So what I mean by that if somebody has long-term care insurance and they're in a care giving right situation, they need to use the long-term care insurance.
Okay. I talked to clients who also have long-term care insurance and maybe there's some gaps there. Maybe there's a waiting period, or maybe they've the long-term care insurance is running out. We can be an additional option for them. Okay. For explaining that, I was just thinking about that question. So what are some of the critical factors that are involved in.
Um, life insurance settlement process. Good question. So if your question is how much can policies be worth and how do people determine that? Is that your question, Mary Lane? Um, yes. In what else is it? Just those two critical factors that are, um, important. Good questions. Typically. So usually the investor groups who purchase a policies, they're all a little different.
As you mentioned, we have access to about 30 of them. So our jobs to market that policy at the most value for clients, but they are all different. Some of them are, are very quirky in terms of the types of policies that they want to see. However, on the basics, they all look at three primary things. One is.
How much premium are they going to have to pay? Right. We talked about that. Number two for how long, in other words, what do they think someone's life expectancy is? And number three, versus the payout that they're going to receive because in a life settlement, think about selling your car and a life settlement, you're going to receive cash, right?
So when someone sells their card, they receive cash. What do they do? They sign the pink slip and the new. Takes it away, right? So it's the same thing with a life settlement. So the ownership of the policy is going to get signed over to an investor group. Client receives cash and the investor group is going to pay the premiums and they're going to be the beneficiary.
So they look at the premium how long their, to pay it and versus what the amount is that they're going to receive the smaller, the amount of the premium versus. The, what we call the face by the policy. The more valuable that policy is, the more money investors are willing to pay. The shorter someone's life expectancy is the more money investors are willing to pay for that because bluntly, they will receive their investment faster.
And of course, the higher, the face value of the policy, the more money they're willing to pay for. So our job, as you mentioned before, we're on team client. We don't represent the investor groups. We represent our clients. So our fiduciary duty is to them to get the most money we can for their policy. So how many investor groups do you usually give a policy to?
And then. Do you negotiate with these investor groups? Good question. So we have access to about 30, but what I will, but we don't do is send every policy out to all 30 because some policies don't fit into certain investors parameters. For instance, we have certain investor groups that don't want. Any policies that are less than 500,000 of what we call face value or death benefit.
So of course it wouldn't send a hundred thousand dollar policy to them, right? So bottom line here is it depends upon the policy itself, but I will tell you this, we send it out to as many investor groups where that policy fits their basic parameters, because the, the beautiful thing for our clients is if we have two or three or four investor groups that are really interested in.
In bidding on a policy and work in a policy that is great news because we can leverage those relationships to drive up the value for clients. So your second part of the question was, do we negotiate? You bet. We do. Absolutely. I'll give an example. We have a client right now. With a $200,000, um, what we call universal life policy.
That's a permanent policy. Um, and the opening offer for her policy was $20,000. And by the time we were done, it was $115,000. So that's the value. And once again, I'm not going to tell you that that happens every single time, but. Shows you the value of what we provide. Um, and so that's why I think it's important that we go out to as many investor groups as possible to be able to, uh, like I said, maximize value for clients that makes a lot of sense.
However, what, um, are there specific amounts? Of a life insurance policy that aren't as profitable, I guess, for you or the clinic for me. So for me, I don't care. Right? I'm here to take care of a client big, small, anywhere in between. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service, but that's a very good question because the answer is yes, not from my perspective.
But from a buyer's perspective, think about, think about their perspective for just a moment in that they still have to make premium payments. They have to do a lot of administration, right? So they are not interested typically in policies that are under a hundred thousand dollars. I'm not saying that in all cases, I'm saying if your audience has a policy, that's I just sold an $85,000 policy.
So a hundred thousand is not hard and fast, but my point here is that if somebody has a $20,000, uh, what I call a final expense policy, a $10,000, those are going to be two small, number one from the investors. They're not going to want to look at it, but let's be more realistic there if you. Clients cells that there's just not going to be enough money in it to make it worth it for them.
So ideally it's a hundred thousand or more, but that's not a break point. Um, I've worked on $50,000 policies. So it just depends upon the client's circumstances. But like I said, if it's 10, 20,000, that's really typically going to be, um, too small, but I always tell people, just call me anyway. Let's talk it through because if there's a way for us to figure out how to get it done, reclined.
Well, that's amazing that you'll look at most anything, but I understand that you have to have meet some parameters so that you can sell. The life insurance policy for the client. So it's behooves them to come in at a higher price. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Cause we, we want to do it clearly. We have to do what's what's right for the client.
What makes sense for the client? And I'm just going to pull a number, but if you're just selling $10,000 policies, give me a thousand dollar offer on it. Like why it doesn't make sense. I'd rather have their family have the $10,000. That does make sense. So you've kind of spoken to, it takes about three to six months typically to sell, um, a policy.
So how, um, frequently, I guess, do you have to negotiate with each investor group? So that's a. I am going to explain why it takes three to five months. I think that's probably where your part of your question is because the negotiation part is not actually not that long. Here's what it looks like. And what I do want your listeners to know is that this is a free, no obligation appraisal.
And what I mean by that. Is that up until the point that a policy is sold, we're not paid. There's no money owed to us like a real estate agent. We only get paid when a policy is sold and the client has already received their money. First of all, there's an application. There's no application fee. That's really important.
We have to go get medical records because that, and we pay for them. The client does not have to go. The doctor does not have to get, you know, blood work done or any of that. We do all we pay for the medical. Because this is how the investor groups underwrite, if you will, what they feel a client's life expectancy is, which as you and I spoke is a key component here.
So that, that takes a while doctors and no disrespect has, they're very busy, especially right now. Doctors can take a while medical groups that hospitals can take a while to get us back records. So what I like to tell people as an expectation is that from the time we receive an application, To the time we hear from investor groups is about 60 to 90 days.
Now, as I mentioned, we can fast track that I have gotten medical records in a week, and certainly have clients want to get involved in calling their doctors and kind of tapping them on the shoulder. Like, Hey, can you respond to this? That can really shorten the timeframe the investors typically need. 2 3, 4 weeks to do their evaluation.
So that's why I say 60 to 90 days. From the time we get an application, we, to the time we find out how much the investors are willing to offer. Now, once again, for those out there that are like, oh my gosh, I don't have that amount of time. Just, just contact us. There are some ways to fast track it. So there's that.
Then we get off. Or we don't, but if we get, if we don't get offers and clients know, they walk away from a policy it's unaffordable, they know they're not leaving any money on that. If we do get offers, clients do not need to accept it. So in the example, I just gave you, um, I told the client from day one, Hey, look, we're at 20,000 right now.
We're still working on it. And I like clients to know every step of the way where we are. We went from 20 to 30 to 40 to 50. Right. And we just were going up by 10,000 and then we started going up by 5,000. So by the time we got to the 115,000, I said, look, Yeah, we're done. We are maxed out. This is the best offer we can possibly get.
Right. And we do go back to other groups and say, Hey, we're at, you know, one 10 now, do you want to bump it up? Hey, we're at one 15. Do you want to bump it up? So it's not just throwing the policy out there and having an electronic bulletin board. It is negotiations and Hey, can you raise your, you know, can you raise your, your bid for a client?
And so once again, clients don't have to accept it if she didn't want the 115,000. Which, you know, let's, let's think about this $600 of cash or 115,000. That was a no-brainer. But if she didn't want, she didn't want the hundred and 15,000, she didn't have to take it. She said, no, I don't want to do it. Then she walks away and there's no money owed.
So I think that's important. So once, one more step, if she says, yes, I want to do it. It's a contract. It looks like selling a house, right? A lot of legal protections that the states mandate are in there for, for clients in terms of language and disclosures, which is a very good thing. Signatures notarized, miniatures.
So from the time we get a contract to a client, I'm going to say it's about four to six weeks. Sometimes it's a little bit less about four to six weeks after to get everything completed. And the sale completely made. Thank you for explaining the whole process because. Well, let me ask you this. Um, does the client's medical history play into what the investors will purchase?
Huge. Yes, huge. And unlike regular life insurance, the more health impairments a client has in our world, the more valuable their policy. So it's actually a good thing for someone to have health impairments in our world. Now, as in regular life insurance, right. It might be hard for them to get life insurance or impossible for them to get life insurance, but we don't, that's not.
For us, the more health impairments, the, the better, the value for the client. Absolutely because bluntly, it shortens that life expectancy. So typically the investors are looking for clients with 10 to 15 years, maybe 20 of life expectancy or less. So the older we are, the healthier we can be because we fit in that.
The younger we are. I have clients in their fifties right now, the younger, we are the more health impairments to be able to fit into that window and the shorter that window. So if someone has three or four years of life is, but the more money the investors are willing to pay for that policy, the more valuable it is to the client.
Because once again, investors are going to get their payoffs. Okay. And you said this is like a real estate transaction. So, um, I'll ask another blunt question, but, um, how, but how much are you actually paid? Um, in addition to what the client receives or. Is it, um, a partial amount from like the total amount that you are able to negotiate.
It's a good, it's a good question. Very late. It's a great again. We're very transparent. So let me tell you what, let me, first of all, commissions are negative. That's really important. Okay. Let me tell you about the maximum commission that we can receive. Right? And we operate anywhere underneath where it makes sense for the client.
So maximum commissions that we can receive, or one third of what we get the client. So the more money we obtain for the client, the more, obviously the more maximum commission massively one-third with the client or 8% of the face value of the policy. Whichever one is. Less, whichever one is less. So bottom line here is whatever works for the client period.
And yes, commissions are disclosed. Once again, we're highly regulated by departments of insurance across the country. Commissions are disclosed. That is really, really important. And a clients do need to sign off. There's a separate piece of paper in the contract that discloses commissions, and they do need to sign off on it.
So nothing here is hidden. Well, it's good. That it's all very transparent. So let me, um, just go back to that $115,000 payout, I guess, to the client. So you're getting. The face value or one third of that amount will in that particular case, the face value of her policy was a 200, $200,000. So our maximum commission that we could have received on that particular policy, uh, 8%, 200,000 is, uh, 16,000.
So in that particular case, we did receive $16,000 and that's what the client pays you after 50. The payout. Well, what's going to happen is the client is going to receive the net. So they don't even have to worry about that part. Okay. So client receives the net, they get their check they're done and they don't have to worry about anything else.
Okay. Thank you. The buyers are going to pay. Okay. So that's true if they just, if they just deduct like the amount of your commission from the check makes much more sense. Yeah. It's just easier. It's easier for them. It's easy for clients. So it's great. So there's not too, not too many checks floating around, so the buyer's going to make a gross offer.
Our is going to come off that and the client receives the. Okay. And once again, when I speak to clients, I always tell them what the net is. And, and like I said, especially with clients where they can see the run-up, like they could see how much value we provide. They ha they're like, yeah, 16,000 is great.
Cause you just gave me like $80,000 more than we started with. It's a very good point. Um, okay. So what else do we need to know in this life? Uh, Life insurance settlement industry that we haven't covered yet. Well, I think that what's important is that before anyone even gets cash out of their policies to talk, cause some policies like universal life or whole life have cash accruals on there that are called cash value.
And sometimes people will what we call surrender policies and get that cash. Before someone even does that. Once again, contact us, we can sell term policies, which obviously have no inherent value. They have no cash in the policy. So anything we get on terms, this is great, right. But on the policies that have cash on average, and we know how average is are Mary Lane, but on average, we are three to five times cash surrender value.
So if someone's going to surrender that policy, the insurance company still. Settlement because we can, uh, generate more value. I, we just sold the policy for a client who had $25,000 of cash in his hundred $50,000 policy. And we got them 31,000. So last time I checked 30 one's better than 25. Um, but I think the message here too, is policies can be.
Tens of thousands or literally hundreds of thousands of dollars for policies that are no longer needed. Like, you know, what I bought the policy for 20 or 30 years ago is no longer a concern house paid off. Maybe I have a spouse passed away, whatever do I need the money for assisted living or caregiving, whatever it is, doesn't matter.
That is the more immediate needs. So take a look at a life settlement. It can be a good solution. We always suggest people talk to their insurance and financial advisors. That's really important here, but looking into a life settled. Doesn't cost any money and there's no, I know I'm a chick, her van from the basketballs.
So there's no harm, no foul, meaning that there's no, there's no downside to not looking at it. Um, and once again, we always suggest to at least find out how much a policy is worth and then talk to your insurance and financial advisors for sure. Okay. Cause that's brings up another question. So, um, Somebody surrenders the policy and yes, it gives them an immediate, well, semi immediate return.
Let's say a policy is purchased by an investor group. What if it turns out that that person had more immediate needs or. Then, um, or have more needs in the future. And so how would the person utilize, I guess the net profit the cell. Okay. So if somebody has already surrendered their policy, what that surrendering means is they have given it back to the insurance company, the insurance company have given her cash value, right?
That means there's no more policy left where gets. Right. So, um, on a settlement side of it, it's going to be the same thing. Meaning that once you sell your car, someone else drives away with it. There's no more asset. Same thing here. The client is still insured. Right. But they don't control the policy anymore.
So that policy. For them, that policy is no longer here. Like you sell your house, you, you don't, you walk out the front door with your furniture and that's, that's all you have to do with the house. It's a, it's a very similar thing. Now, the beautiful part about this is, uh, answering the second half of your question is like, when you sell a car, your house, the proceeds are not restricted.
It anyway, right? When you sell your car, you can do anything with the money you want. It's the same thing here. So when our clients receiving that $115,000, they can do anything with it that they want to do. Go on around the world, cruise. I can do whatever you want to do with it. So it's not restricted. But what I would do want your listeners to know is they will be 10 99.
So that is important for people to understand. Now, I am not telling you that all that money will be taxable because sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's not once again, tax advice. Uh, and if you want me to go into the weeds on that, I can, but it's probably not appropriate here. Bottom line here is that there will be a 10 99 coming in January for the net proceeds that the client receives.
So it could be pretty expensive than for the client to pay in taxes. Maybe, maybe not because once again, part of it may be taxable part of it not taxable. So if, and once again, I'm going to tell people to talk to their financial advisors and the tax advisors, because I am not one, I'm going to caveat that, but I'm going to answer the question.
When people put premium, when people put pre-bid into a policy that is considered how much they've paid for that policy, that's a basis. So an example is I buy a house for a hundred thousand dollars. That's how much I paid for my house. But I sell it for 50. The $50,000 I get is less than what I paid for the policy.
So I'm not text on that. It's the same thing. A lot of times the settlement money is underneath the amount of premiums the client has paid for the policy that I'll give an example. We have a million dollar policy. We just sold the premise. We're just getting way too expensive for the family to afford on the policy like 45,000 a year.
And they're just like, look, we can't, we can't afford paying this and we can't afford to pay this anymore. And they have about a hundred thousand dollars of cash in the policy. We wound up selling it for $360,000, which last time I checked is better than a hundred thousand cash surrender. Right. Here's my point.
They had already paid $381,000 of premiums into the policy. So that whole 360,000 is not going to be taxable. Because it's underneath what they paid for the policy. So that's what I'm saying. It depends. And then typically, typically if you have money that's over that basis, the premiums typically it's capital gains.
So. It's not a horrible tech station event. And, and even in some circumstances, depends upon the client's circumstances that money can be even tax-free. It just depends upon their health issues and how they long, how long they have to live. So there's all kinds of things going around, uh, you know, uh, possible here.
But the bottom line here is, remember, these are policies that. Or wanted or needed. I am going to walk away from that. The client giving the 115,000 had $600 of cash. Like within a month, that policy was going to be gone. Cause she just couldn't put more money into it. And now we have 115. So even if she has to pay some of that in capital gains, last time I checked that still is a lot more money than $600.
Okay. You make your point very nicely. Thank you. Are there any unexpected surprises when somebody surrenders the policy? I mean, you think that, um, it would be worth more than what you, um, actually surrendered the value for. Am I making my, okay, so let's say you've got a hundred thousand dollars. Policy and let's say your would be getting.
Uh, payment less than that, much less than that is that when do you determine it's not a good fit for that particular? Okay, good question. So here's an example. If someone calls Mrs. Lisa, I have a hundred thousand dollars policy and it has $80,000 of cash surrender value. I'm going to tell that client to take the 80,000 of cash surrender value because there's no.
That we're going to be able to sell it for 80,000, right. Compared to the face value. Okay. That's really, really high. But like I said, I talk to me, like call me and talk to me because, um, sometimes, like I mentioned before, we have a client that had that $150,000 policy with 25,000 of cash. We got on 31.
Here's the key here. When we look into a life settlement, if the investor groups can not beat the cash surrender value, they're just not going to make an offer because it makes absolutely no sense to sell it. So the gentlemen has just, gentlemen had 25,000 cash. The investors are not gonna make an offer 15.
There's no way because why would they, it would make no sense. Why would I sell my policy for 15 when I can get 25,000 for surrendering it? So what'll happen is we just won't see investors bid on it. And this particular case, the obviously did, and they gave him more money, but in a situation where if they didn't think they could beat the cash surrender, they're just not gonna make an offer on the policy.
Does that answer your question? Yes. Yes. Thank you, Lisa and sorry, I'm just trying to formulate these questions and sometimes. I've tried to make it as clear as possible, but, um, I need to re state what I was trying to ask. So I just wanted to make sure I answered the right question. No, I appreciate that. I was trying to figure out how to, um, uh, frame it for you so that it would make logical sense.
So thank you for your job. Thank you. Got it. Um, you're doing amazing. So, Lisa, I love your passion. Um, what makes you do this for clients? Good question. As you mentioned, first of all, I'm an insurance geek. I've been in the insurance industry for 30 years, but this is all we do. And here's the reason why to answer your question.
The 500,000 seniors who elapsed their policies every year and walk away with little or nothing that makes me. Um, and that's why I love doing, um, podcasts like this, because I'm here to raise visibility that this solution exists. I'm not here to sell anybody, anything. I am not here to talk anybody into selling the life insurance policy.
Right. I'm just here to say it exists. And if it's a right fit for you and your family, then that's fantastic. Let's talk. And if it's not, that's great. Keep because we are not the right fit for most people and we shouldn't be the right fit for most people. But for some of those 500,000, right, we should be.
And to give you some perspective, only about 2,500 sold their life insurance policies last year. 500,000 and we've got 2,500, that's a really big gap, right? So where my passion lies is educating as many people as possible to let them know we're here. So before you let your policy go, you know, look into a life settlement, cause we can't, you're walking, you could be walking with little or nothing and we could be getting you an awful lot more money.
So that's where my passion lies is to, I love. Helping clients. And we've worked with financial advisors and insurance agents across the country. Yes, we do business nationwide, um, uh, healthcare professionals like yourself to help your clients, elder law attorneys, anybody that we can reach out to, to let people know that we're here and yet.
We've been legal since 1911 and yes, we are highly regulated by departments of insurance across the country. So this is not some crazy thing that, you know, just popped up. That's not regulated. We are extremely regulated and the process is very transparent. So like I said, very much like really. Well, that's incredible.
If it's like real estate, why haven't more seniors heard about this service as a possibility to help them manage their care? So a couple of things, and I'm going to caveat this by saying life insurance is important. I believe in life. It can be a very important financial planning tool, but I also believe that there can be a time when a life insurance policy isn't wanted anymore.
Right. Doesn't serve its purpose anymore, or people want to redirect it and they should be allowed to sell it. Well, I will tell you that life insurance companies, aren't really excited about what we do and here's the reason why. So that's part of the reason. Uh, that lot of people don't know about it because no, one's shouting from the mountaintops we're here and here's the reason why they don't like it.
And once again, this is no disrespect to life insurance companies. They are really important, but when clients lapse their policy or surrender it it's thank you very much for the premium. We did not have to pay a claim, right? That's profit. When an investor group purchases a policy. The life insurance companies know that these investors are not going to lapse the policy.
So they know there is going to be a claim here. It's just a function of when. So although seven states have regulated that life insurance companies tell clients that there are alternatives to lapsing or surrendering a policy. That's fantastic. Most clients are not going to pick up the phone and say, hi life insurance company.
I'm thinking of laps. You're surrendering my policy. Like no one does that. Right. They just go, oh, you know, I don't need it anymore. So I stopped making my premium payments or I might just write a letter and send in a cancellation notice to my insurance company. So am. A lot of insurance agents and financial advisors, either a don't know about this or B don't really fully understand it or have misperceptions about what it is.
So they don't, aren't ready to talk to their clients and see, um, some life insurance companies, especially if there is a, um, what's the word I'm looking for? Um, uh, if they're traditional life insurance that, um, carriers that have. Uh, set agents that can't go outside those carriers. In other words, this is the agents could only market their products.
The insurance companies do say, look, if you've been talking about a life insurance settlement, we can counsel your contract. So it's, it's a lot of different reasons, but I will tell you the good news. There is one buyer right now. Spending a lot of money to advertise on TV. You'll typically see them call Coventry direct.
They are wonderful. We love our investor groups, right? Because without them, we don't have anybody to purchase the policy. Here's the difference when someone calls that 800 number on TV, that is one investigator. We work with them. They're wonderful. They do a good job. They're trying to get the policies inexpensively as possible.
And from their perspective, I completely understand it. Our job is completely the opposite, right? So our client with a $200,000 policy called the 800 number and that 800 number offer 20,000. She might've just taken it because like, great. That's better than $600. And that's awesome. And I'll take that well.
And how does she know how much your policies work? You don't know until your marketing. It's like selling your house to one person. I mean, I mean, you don't say that the first person that shows up it's it's, it's not the right thing to do. It does not maximize value. So we're here to maximize value and that way she knows her policies worth one 15.
That's what she got. You know, life is good. Well, thank you for just setting us, given these amazing, um, examples of what you're able to do, because it just seems like, um, people should be shouting this from the rooftops. It's almost like the changes in, if you don't mind reverse mortgages. So, um, that is amazing that people can walk away possibly with, um, a greater return so that they can use it for, like you mentioned any purpose that they want is, um, is there any, well, there doesn't appear to be any downsides.
The client or for you? Um, what else do we need? Is there more to life, uh, life insurance, settlements that we haven't covered? Well, you brought up a good point Mary Lane. Let's talk about the downsides real quickly. Okay. So yeah, whenever there's positives, there's negatives, right? Um, so there are four, there are four negatives, none of which I think are terribly big deals.
One, we already, the biggest one we already talked about and that's Texas, but once again, Nothing from my asset. And I might get, you know, 20,000, 30,000, whatever. I mean, even have to pay taxes on a portion of that. It's going to be better than zero or little so taxes. The second thing is it may be difficult to get more life insurance, but I look at it this way.
If someone is selling a life insurance policy, they obviously don't want more life insurance, but it can be more difficult to get into the life insurance policy. So that's number two. Number three is that we already addressed it is that the clients will get a 10 90. So if somebody is on, um, state, uh, or income-based, you know, government, um, uh, programs like Medi-Cal can be an issue.
However, I would tell them to talk to a elder law attorney because elder law attorneys know how to deal with that. That's not my purview, I'm just mentioning it. And the last one is going to be really rare. If I'm in bankruptcy and to be clear, I'm not, but if I'm a client that's in bankruptcy and I sell my life insurance policy for cash, that becomes part of the bankruptcy estate that quitters gonna attach.
So once again, not a big deal that might mean that's not gonna come up a lot. So Mo. In my opinion, clearly positives much bigger than negatives. And I just, I just love delivering found money for clients. So back to your point, it's a win for a client, you know, for the, for the right circumstances, it's a win for the investor.
It's a win for, for people, you know, getting found money. And certainly it's a privilege for me. So it it's a win-win for. Okay. I just thought of another question. Okay. So if the investor's kind of banking on the life expectancy of a client, um, how would they know, um, when that person passes? Yes. Good.
That's see. That's an excellent question. There's a couple things. So there's a whole cottage industry around a life insurance settlement. So couple of different ways. One is there are firms that particularly will monitor the social security and Medicare roles. So if someone drops off those roles, that's the.
Pretty big clue that something happened. Right. But more importantly, as part of that contract, I think I mentioned like real estate is pretty thick. Right? Right. There is going to be, um, two sheets of paper in there besides the rest of it. But in there, um, one is going to be a sheet of designees. So for instance, um, who can provide a death certificate, who's going to provide a death certificate.
And I will tell you that by law, the investor groups do have the right, depending upon the state, I'll talk about California do have the right to contact the client or the client's designee. Whichever one they can doesn't matter once every quarter. Um, up until they have a year live and then it can be maximum once a month.
Now I will tell you that typically doesn't happen because once again, these investors don't want to do more restoration than they have to, but legally they have that, right. So they can, and they don't say, Hey, how's it going? I mean, they just check in and say, Hey, is this still your foot, your phone number still working.
That's great. Are you still at this address? And those kinds of things, but once. There's designees in this, um, uh, contract so that these investors can contact them. And also someone signing off just to say, yes, I agree to provide the death certificate. Okay. So the designee could be the same person that provides the death certificate, or could it be someone else because it matter doesn't matter.
Absolutely. Wow. Whatever works for the client. I have clients who have. You know, work with my husband. We have people who say work with my son, my daughter, my, you know, estate planning, attorney, whatever it is. Well, you seem to make it so easy. So I really appreciate you talking about life insurance settlements.
It's a new topic for me, so I'm sure it will be for a lot of the caregivers who are taking care of a loved one. Um, do you have just like a free kind of sheet where it could explain what type of, uh, or what a life, life insurance settlement is and then, um, what they can possibly expect during this process?
I do. Um, I have a. Uh, flyer, uh, it's just an educational flyer that literally talks about exactly the basics of what we just talked about. What is this thing? Right? What can I do with the money? Why would I want to sell my policy? Policies can be sold. So it's a real, a real simple, brief. Um, flyer. I also have a website with a lot of information and articles and blogs, or, you know, just call me.
Um, I have a lot of clients just to say, look, I'm just going to pick up the phone and call me, email me. Um, absolutely whatever works, but yes, we do have a lot of information available and I'm happy to provide any and all of it. Once again, I'm just here to educate. Because people know, right. People know when this is a good solution for them or not a good solution for them.
Um, and I'm just here to, to provide the tools to help them decide. Okay. Thank you very much. I really appreciate you being here and talking to our caregivers about this really important tool that they use. Used to help their loved one in any way possible. So, um, thank you very much. It's my pleasure. And Mary Lee, would you prefer that I mentioned my contact information here, or would you like to put it at the bottom of the screen or, or whatever's easiest.
Okay, great question. We'll put it at the bottom of the screen, I believe just to make it easier or in like the snapshot that we put with the, um, the podcast itself. Perfect. That's excellent. So I appreciate so much the opportunity to be here. If I could shout it from the mountaintops that we're here to be of service, I would do it.
I know you would. I just feel like all your energy and which is great. I think people would have a great time. Working with you in, um, seeing what's what's available from their life insurance policies. So thank you again, mark clients. My pleasure. Thank you. Okay.
“My intention is to support caregivers through their entire journey because it can be a very long one, it’s full of uncertainty and it’s difficult.” Toni considers caregiving the hardest responsibility and a full-time job. She was working together with physicians and healthcare professionals before most of the time the E.R., she was best in communication because that is what she grew up with and educated. Toni quoted “But I was really unprepared for what caregiving involved, specially never imagining it will be 14 years that I would be involved with my mom” her goal was to provide the best care for her mom, create memories, joy and have a communication strategy that will work for both of them. Given the stress and exhaustion, she realizes that there was already care plans for her mom from the senior adviser but never was with the caregiver.
After her mom died, she realizes there are 54 million caregivers just in the US that was in the same situation and crisis she was in. “When you are in a crisis situation you really gets stressed out, because you probably haven’t planed for the crisis” Toni said, “The thing that I needed was somebody to listen to me and then somebody who would have been a caregiver, would have been helpful because then they could have shared their experience.”
“So, I wanna be there for people and give that guidance” Toni stated.

Kelly Stickney, a member of the International Association Yoga Therapist, explained what is Yoga and its benefits, "Yoga therapy is unique. It takes the extensive tools of Yoga. You're looking at the physical body, mental, as well as energy, the cognitive and spiritual. You can pick and choose because all of these are interconnected. You take back pain for instance. Being flat on your back is not only physically challenging but also emotionally. It's a matter of survival. If you didn't have the support
system of the people around you, it can be very tough. When you need to heal your back and don't physically have the power to do, that's the time we take other tools of Yoga that will help you cope emotionally to get the right mindset and work toward achieving your goal."
"Yoga is very applicable to Type 2 diabetes. Science shows it's linked to diet and exercise. When you go to the doctor, it sounds like an easy fix, but it's not. So you need to make it fun or find something that works for you."
Kelly gave a piece of advice to those who want to do Yoga, "to start your studies and practice yoga, you always start with the ethics, and that ethic is AHIMSA, it's the practice of compassion. Anything that you do through compassion cannot be wrong. If you do this, maybe you can keep an open mind, and then any practices that you take on with that approach, you'll see greater benefits for yourself and the person your caring for.
She also said that "getting a Yoga therapist can help you figure out what tools are going to fit in not only with the goals you want to reach but also your physical and mental capabilities, strengths and limitations. They'll gonna help you fit into a daily routine, not only to hand you what you could work but to tell you how to use it every day and would feel more comfortable.

Julia Felton, the Business Wrangler advised.... "(04:15) Science is proving what we've always learned intuitively, nature does things to the human brain it makes us healthier, happier, and smarter." Julia also advised "(05:08) We are part of nature and everything in the world is interconnected. If we really allow ourselves to, we get the ability to slow down.. getting back to nature reactivates our senses and makes us feel connected to ourselves."
At the beginning of the conversation, Kaye said that we need to, "Take action and be more aware of what is happening inside their bodies."
She also advised, "When you get to that place that you're so busy and don't feel you have time to take a deep breath, that's the alarm that says it's more necessary than you think. Take a deep breath. It will only take a minute to reset. It also calms the mind that helps us to think more clearly."
Here's another word of wisdom from her "This is my question to myself, why do I not consider myself important enough to take care of myself, schedule a self-care and become consistent with it. If I'm not at my best, then I can't be my best for the people that I'm helping because that is my passion. It doesn't matter what your passion is, whether it's your job, your family, or whatever it is. Taking time for self-care helps you do it better, enjoy it more and not have to take more time away from yourself, from your family, from your friends. That's what happens to me and now you are forced to change your life. Why not make it a non-negotiable and begin practicing so that you can enjoy the days right now better and have more fun.
She also added, "It is not about stress, it's about whatever that you are going through. Our life is unique, we all have different struggles, we all have different schedules, and finding what works with each person is going to look a little bit different and that's where my passion is."

Dr. Cheek shared, “I'm a physician and my hours are extremely long and complicated. Working 12 hours a day minimum, and I found myself constantly being tired, having exhaustion. My solution to that was as the day would progress, was nibbling on my gold fish and drinking my coffee. I would put together probably about 3 pots of coffee a day in the process of my working and feeding myself with simple carbs by mid-afternoon. The problem was, within 15 minutes of consuming the coffee, I was exhausted again. It didn’t last very long so I decided to detox from caffeine and simple carbs.”
She reported that the initial effect of detoxification was a bit of a shock to the system. “When you’re used to eating carbs and drinking coffee and suddenly stops, you would have a bit of withdrawal. You feel a bit more tired.” She further shared the positive effects of detoxification to her body. “After about the 4th day, your energy starts to pick up again. By the 10th day, you actually have detoxed. It takes about 10 days to detoxify off of sugar or carbs or anything. By the time I have detoxed, I was working until 10 o’clock at night and I still have the energy to burn. I never had to eat anything more, I never had to drink any more coffee to try to maintain my energy.”
Dr. Cheek emphasized, “When you detoxify or cleanse the cells of the body, it can only be done through energy medicine that's very specific to those cells. It can’t be done through anything herbal or anything pill form. A person would have to make a connection with a homeopath or someone who does energy medicine.” She further explained that fasting also helps detoxify (ideally 3 days). During fasting, the body starts breaking down the bad cells then the body will grow good cells that are not filled with toxins. It’s way of detoxifying without going through
Atty. Sarah explained why someone needs guardianship and conservatorship, "I often explain that in certain circumstances when someone has already reached the point where they are incapacitated or have diminished capacity and are not able to make decisions for themselves, if they don't have powers of attorney, unfortunately, it might be too late for them to execute legal documents."
She advised, "It's important that people think through how to know being appointed in these roles would potentially impact their relationships among family members. There really needs to be a good reason to have one person appointed in both roles as a guardian and a conservator. It provides more balance and accountability when you're having different people in different roles as opposed to one person managing of everything for the incapacitated person."
She also recommends, "Everyone should have state planning documents in place and it doesn't matter how old you are, how healthy you are especially as it pertains to powers of attorney."

Attorney Thompson discourages joint bank accounts if considering possibilities of bad scenarios such as accidents in the future.
Having a medical power of attorney can give you peace of mind because it will make the difficult decisions about your healthcare if and when you are not able to do so yourself. These could impact important future events such as surgery, hospitalization, or ongoing treatment plan preference.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal law that requires the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. (https://www.cdc.gov/phlp/publications/topic/hipaa.htm)
HIPAA waivers or forms can also be provided. This waiver is not the same as a healthcare power of attorney. It does not give family members permission to make medical decisions, but it allows them access to review medical files and get updates on your condition.
It is important for every individual to have a living will as it is an important step to take in order to prevent unnecessary burden for your family.
While a will and a trust are both legal documents that allow you to spell out how you want your affairs to be handled after death, Heidi pointed out the main differences between a will and trust packages.A will spell out how you want your affairs to be handled and what happens with all of those assets. A trust, on the other hand, is a legal document that gives somebody the right to hold title to your assets for you after you die.
Attorney Thompson also emphasized the meaning of probate. According to her. “Probate is a process where the state looks at people that have passed and the things they own and determines who the rightful owner is and if there’s a will, that’s where they verify if the will is current and is accurate. The will is the direction to the probate court.”
She also added that trust is fairly infinite and revocable. During one’s lifetime, it can be changed. A person can control all of the assets while alive. They don’t die. They don’t go to probate court and they keep on going even after many generations till they fulfill the purposes of a will.
