Welcome to another episode of JZ Unfiltered, where we support wellness professionals in taking care of themselves both in their personal and professional lives. In this episode, we're discussing setting and maintaining boundaries. As a wellness professional, you know how important it is to take care of yourself if you want to take care of others. And yet, it can be challenging to say no or set firm boundaries when clients or colleagues ask for more than you're willing or able to give.
Jenna shares a personal story of feeling challenged in maintaining boundaries when a client asked her to babysit. She realized that this person wasn't taking her profession seriously and was taking advantage of her kind nature. It's important to recognize when clients are crossing boundaries and to be firm in saying no to requests that don't fit within your scope of work.
Mental and physical exhaustion are signs that you're reaching your limits and need to take a step back. Whether it's taking a break, asking for help, or setting boundaries, it's important to put your well-being first. Jena suggests reflecting on where and why you may compromise your boundaries, despite knowing that you cannot do everything. Is it pressure to please others or fear of losing clients? It's crucial to understand why you may be feeling this way so you can take steps to address those feelings and set clear boundaries moving forward.

On the eve of a holiday where gratitude is the theme, Jenna speaks with Troy Anderson, founder and International Director of Speak Up For The Poor, an organization that sponsors the education of 1,560 girls in 35 villages and urban communities in the Khulna area of western Bangladesh. These girls are predominantly Dalits, descendants of the Hindu untouchables, or very poor Muslim girls. They are among the poorest and most marginalized people in an already impoverished country and without intervention can suffer unimaginable fates.
In this episode, we discuss the founding of Speak Up, the great advocacy and activism work they've been able to accomplish over the years and Jenna shares her experience of being a long-time sponsor of students within their GEP program.

In expanding our content to humanitarian issues and ways to help, I hope that we as movement professionals remember that we are humans first, teachers second and when we pool our resources together, we can create great impact across the world.

DO YOU KNOW IF… You’ve experienced coercive control, undue influence, authoritarian environments or power dynamics that are problematic? In this episode I share an expert chat from the JZ Mvt Pro Community with People Leave Cults founder Ashlen Hilliard. We'll learn aspects of power dynamics that can be present and harmful and/or may hold the potential to become harmful without the right support systems in place. Large Group Awareness Training (brief overview article)
Presentation: "MIND FIXERS: The History of Mass Therapy With its Roots in Mind Dynamics Institute, Misuse of Zen Insights, and Hyping the Positive Thinking of New Thought Religion." (Joseph Kelly, Joseph Szimhart, Patrick Ryan)
The title for this presentation, “MIND FIXERS: The History of Mass Therapy With its Roots in Mind Dynamics Institute, Misuse of Zen Insights, and Hyping the Positive Thinking of New Thought Religion,” covers a vast arena for specialized workshops that range from one day to several weeks. Borrowing techniques from encounter group formats, military boot camp training, and the mindfulness movements, these specialized groups operate as unregulated mass therapy businesses and are not licensed as mental health professions. The stated purpose of these “large group awareness training” is to increase self-realization and success in life. The outcomes, however, are problematic with some critics claiming that a form of “brainwashing” is taking place that emphasizes promotion of the workshops while any real-life gains are highly questionable. Some participants report psychological and social harm. The speakers will guide a discussion to address the criticisms.

In this episode, we discuss the concept of "role incredulity," which is defined in the following way:
Role incredulity is a form of gender bias where women are mistakenly assumed to be in a support or stereotypically female role — a secretary, assistant, or nurse — rather than a leadership or stereotypically male role, such as CEO, lawyer, or doctor. Harvard Business Review
This topic is so important in the age of GURU-ISM and especially in the fitness/wellness realm. It will challenge you to investigate some of the ways you are celebrating the masters without investigating if their actions truly align with your values.
It's definitely an episode that will stoke your progressive fire!

We're diving deep into the concept of Broken Wing Syndrome and how it applies to our client relationships, teacher training relationships and even the industry at large. This one is juicy! (and there's a little singing too)

Broken Wing Syndrome (“BWS”) refers to non-resilient individuals, and specifically to those working in a family business, where their weaknesses (broken wings) attract well-meaning support from parents and other family members, in ways that are inappropriate, and ultimately unhelpful, to the family and the business. - Family Business United

Hello Everyone,

Fresh off a marathon meeting with my book-keepers about 2020, the mood is REAL. In this episode, I share a story about "round pets," talk about what brought me into Pilates - Hint: it was superficial, it's not anymore and it's all OK! - and drop an "assignment" for you that opens the space for client empathy and why it's important. I also sing a little. It's no Hamilton parody, but it drives the point home.

Kelly Hale is one of my favorite resources for all things integration and gut health. In this conversation, we discussed so many simple and effective strategies to use to improve your digestive health and movement practices, both as humans and . We also dove deep into the subject of elimination! Kelly is an Occupational Therapist , Mind Body Integration Specialist, and Gut Health coach! Kelly brings a refreshing mix of experience and insight, as she combines rehab, holistic healing and movement science. She is continually fascinated by the body’s innate ability to heal through movement. Her work is sought out for her unique, synergistic approach that goes beyond the diagnosis and functional deficits to examine the true root causes such as “tripped-up” reflexes, cranial-sacral system disruption, and an un-integrated nervous system. This work has inspired her to create Innate Connections a course for rehab and movement professionals. She opened the first Holistic Rehab and Pilates practice in metro Detroit in 2001. Kelly has enjoyed mentoring and educating many professionals through the years clinically and presenting at various conferences such as PMA, Pilates on Tour Rehab Summit, Rehab Conferences and more. She has had the joy of sharing Inspiring presentations in corporations and keynoting at health care conferences. She was a Principal Educator for Polestar for 11 years, and currently teaches courses for The Center for Women’s Fitness. Kelly holds numerous certifications in Pilates and unique modalities such as Brain Gym and Body Ecology.

We all could use an enlightening episode right now! Lily Matson first reached out to me to see if I would be interested in interviewing someone who was just completing her first year of teaching to explore this very sweet spot in a Pilates Teacher's journey. I was a full YES!
At the time of this interview, Lily was a newer Pilates Instructor in Portland, OR. with about 1 year of teaching under her belt. Her relationship with Pilates started when she was in high school, watching Mari Winsor infomercials in her parents' basement over and over again. After years of organized sports, running and barre classes, she made her way back to mat Pilates. She took her first Reformer class at Cascadia Pilates in Portland and there was no turning back. She joined Cascadia Pilates as a member, completed my 450-hr Teacher Training in May 2019 and started to work as an instructor right away, quitting her full-time job in order to pursue this new career in health and wellness. It was a scary leap with lots of challenges, but one that she's so happy she made.
Lily, asked for some coaching in this interview and you know that I was willing to go there and I know that this perspective expanding conversation is exactly what you need to ignite your teaching with new energy for the weeks ahead!

We're joined this week by Pilates Pro, LaBriece Ochsner for a diverse conversation about teaching, moving and culture. LaBriece, as unique as her name symbolizes, is identified by her Pilates clients as a role model for healthy living. She approaches teaching with a full heart, extraordinary insight and precise attention to detail that not just personalizes your exercise experience but allows you to achieve your full potential. After studying at the University of California, San Diego where she was a top student, competitive rower, and modern dancer, LaBriece ran a successful Pilates studio outside of metropolitan Phoenix for a decade while raising her three children. Now residing in Switzerland, she leads the Balanced Body Authorized Training Center for German-speaking Switzerland in her comprehensive Pilates Studio.
This interview evolved from Pilates-talk between teachers to a beautiful journey through the many ways we communicate through language, cueing, motivating factors and cultures. LaBriece holds a wealth of inspiring information that is valuable to teachers of all traditions.

In Episode 101, we speak to @taralynpilates about her love for connecting with humans through movement. Her work developed from a classical pedigree in NYC and has spanned a spectrum of clientele. Tara-Lyn’s passion is teaching Pilates with a purpose. That purpose always depends on the clients’ needs and what journey they are on. The common purpose is to help clients find the power they have inside themselves through movement, purposeful thought, and intention. Tara-lyn works with the general population in her studio and her work extends into working with teens to improve their relationship with their bodies, as well as through special programming for breast cancer survivors. Conversations where hands are thrown up in the air, tears are shed, snorts of laughter are abundant and the connection is strong are my reason for podcasting. My conversation with Kelly Kane was more like a rebirth of purpose and reaffirmed why I started Pilates Unfiltered.
Kelly Kane studied Pilates with Romana Krazanaska & Hila Paldi, completing her certification with The Pilates Institute. She has studied BodyMind Centering™, Continuum Movement™, Iyengar Yoga, and has done extensive Crossfit training. She attended Massage School at the Florida School of Massage and her manual therapy repertoire includes Structural Integration™, CranioSacral Therapy™ and Visceral Manipulation. She further developed her perceptual skills through three years of human cadaver dissection.
Today, Kelly directs the Kane School of Core Integration, which is the training program she originated in New York City. but currently resides in Rochester, Vermont where she teaches Pilates on her 57 acre farm and at Biscuit Hill Pilates in Woodstock, Vermont.

This week's episode is a must-listen for all teachers of movement. Beth is a Pilates pro who works within the world of academia, teaching university-level movement, health education, and Pilates classes and coordinating the Mind-Body Fitness programs at the Auraria campus in Denver, Co. She works in collaboration with the LGBTQ Student Resource Center and the Phoenix Center at Auraria, an office dedicated to assisting people who experience Interpersonal Violence. Because of the unique nature of the environment she teaches in, Beth has evolved her approach to teaching Pilates to be both inclusive and trauma-informed.
My interview with Beth Sandlin is full of rich and relevant content that will help teachers understand how to better work with humans in general, but also offers true strategies to work with clients who have experienced trauma within your scope of practice. Human connection can be complicated and having resources to gain perspective is one of the options we have to continue to grow our skills as teachers of movement. I am so thrilled to have Beth as not only a guest but as an important resource in the Pilates Profession.

This week I get raw and honest about some of the most meaningful mistakes I've made as a Pilates studio owner. I'll share the mistake as well as the lesson I learned from the experience. I know that many of you will relate! Stay tuned for Part II in a few weeks where I'll cover the same subject with regards to taking my work online.
It's my hope that sharing these stories will help you with your own journey through business ownership and teachers, not to worry - this episode is universal to the journey of Pilates Professional.

This week we welcome Mary Peacock to the pod. After years of weight training and pursuing the traditional fitness path, Mary found that she was just not doing her body justice. In 1999, she began dabbling in Pilates and a year later was studying in studios across the U.S. with trainers from all over the world. Mary trained for over a decade under Romana Kryzanowska, her daughter Sari, and granddaughter, as well as Romana’s carefully selected Master Teachers and Teachers. She has also studied with Jay Grimes and Kathryn Ross-Nash. As a teacher, Mary takes pride in obtaining and maintaining the Original Teachings of Joseph Pilates as it has been passed on to her from many teachers.
In this interview, we get honest about ALL of the elements that we face as teachers in training, after training and then some. You'll hear and maybe commiserate with us as we have a completely unfiltered conversation about our own experiences going through teacher training, our relationships with our mentors as well as our staff.

In Episode 87, we dive deep into the subject matter of our relationship with ourselves - in movement, in teaching, and in life with Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle. It's one that you will want to get the pen and paper out for and possibly the tissues, too.
Wendy is an international leader in embodied movement. Her "movement pedigree" includes working with top leaders in both the Pilates realm as well as somatics and structural integration. The culmination of this rich background of work is a tapestry of truth in movement that is informed through curiosity, play, listening and of course, moving the body!
In this episode, Jenna was fortunate enough to not only receive the gift of a conversation through the interview but also a full life treatment in the best of ways!
Huge gratitude to Wendy for this auditory gift. We know you will all receive so much from this episode!

This episode has been a long time coming. Chantill Lopez is a movement explorer, educator, and mentor and has made a 20-year career teaching Pilates; it still makes her smile. Her work focuses on teaching from the whole-person and whole-body perspective, drawing from brain-based learning frameworks, motivation and communication science, somatic and humanistic psychology, and other emerging models such as the polyvagal theory. She is the founder of the education company, Skillful Teaching, the creator of the Thinking Pilates Podcast and author of the book “Moving Beyond Technique”. She is also the creator of one of Pilates Metrics’ original movement libraries and a featured presenter for Fusion Pilates EDU.
In this rich conversation, we strip away the layers to discover what really needs to happen in order for us to create a teaching scenario where our students embody autonomy, choice, and empowerment. HINT: It starts with YOU!
If you've ever wondered about the next steps for your teaching practice, whether teaching was for you in the long term or how you might help your clients gain more responsibility for their practice, this conversation goes there and then some.
This is one of those conversations where you'll be nodding along - even if you haven't considered making a shift in your teaching or career yet. A true GEM!

Happy Thankgiving to our US listeners. This week is a replay of one of our favorite BONUS episodes from 2017. It's our Listenerpaloooza! We'll hear our listener's answers to our "questions of the week!" Topics like firing clients, raising prices and non-pilates conversations in a session are at the top of the list. We even have our very first CLIENT RANT! It was so interesting to go back and hear the show from over a year ago. Please excuse the overuse of the phrase "guys" - I've since shifted much of my language to be more inclusive. SO much has changed, and yet, I still enjoy a good musical parody. Enjoy a flashback to my musical stylings and just picture me blushing furiously as I listen to the playback of this episode. We'll be back on track with an all-new episode next week!

Pilates, The Ron Fletcher Work™, and Nia® (Movement arts fitness, training, and lifestyle). Ken is also a Visiting Instructor on Pilates Anytime.
Ken's words: "My work as a Pilates Teacher can be intense for the client as I am "client-based" (rather than material or program based) in the work that I do with each individual."

TRIGGER WARNING: The subjects of menstrual cycles, infertility, pregnancy, childbirth and hysterectomy are discussed in this episode.
Jenna drops in for a bonus episode to share the story of her recent surgery. It was a serendipitous series of events that led her into a surgeon's office to find out that there was, in fact, something wrong that was causing this pain. The end result was a laparoscopic hysterectomy. In this episode, Jenna shares the lead up to diagnosis, the decision for surgery and the way she navigated her experience from a place of empowerment and choice.
Jenna has a candid check-in call with Carrie Pages, Anula Maiberg, Jessica Valant, and Lesley Logan. They discuss everything from setting your rates, to traveling, to social media. It's an insiders take on how professionals discuss their work and support each other's lives!
