Massive respect to Decoded Magazine for hosting this contest and showcasing artists pushing the craft forward. Decoded magazine Mix of the Month Competition. This is my full mix at a little over 70 minutes. Official submission was cut down to 61 minutes to meet the rules.

I recorded a one take live 4-deck performance using STEMS and multi-layer blending throughout the entire session for this December 2025's Decoded Magazine Mix Contest . No track is presented in its original state — instead, the mix constantly reshapes the groove through isolated drum patterns, vocal fragments, synth lines, and atmospherics.

The mix is designed as a progressive narrative, shifting from deep rolling textures into melodic tension, and finally into peak-time energy. The set relies heavily on long harmonic blends, stem-driven re-arrangements, and counter-melodies layered across multiple decks. Nearly every transition includes 3 tracks interacting at once, with the first half of the mix using 4 tracks, emphasizing fluid progression over abrupt shifts.

Balanced Euphoria is a deep, groove-driven, late-night soundtrack designed to bring the room from peak intensity into pure after-hours flow. Spanning just over two hours, this mix is my first set built 100% from STEM files, meaning not a single track is played in its original form. Every moment is reconstructed, re-layered, or re-imagined.

Across four decks, the set drifts between smooth transitions, hypnotic rhythms, and melodic textures. Roughly 40% is mixed on all four decks, 50% on three decks, and the remaining 10% on two, giving this mix a constantly shifting, evolving feel. Expect subtle grooves, rolling basslines, and carefully balanced energy — the kind of set I'd play in the final hours of a long night, when the dance floor wants to move but also float.

This mix name has been sitting in my friend DJ Bennet's head for 20 years, which was provided to him by his friend Corey. Finally, it is being used for my latest mix. When I heard this title, it reminded me of being at any great club around 1998-2000 at 3pm, when the tourists crowd leaves, and the after hours crowd arrives. Converted an old stone tablet, I mean Mini-Disk from Carbon. I never played main there, so this has to be from the old Red Room, or VIP. If it is the time I think it is, I played old school and hiphop earlier in the night. Ahhh Memory loss ;) It is faster breaks and trance'ish with Tenth Chapter, Ease Drop, Eat Static, Ellis Dee, Tony Faline, Vincent De Moor, and Humate...you get the drift. With that last track, I can only assume I closed...I clearly gave up mashing that Boston Bruins break into it ;)

Wiggle here. I am going to Talk Story prior to dropping part 3 of the Femmebot set. Let’s hop into the way back machine and have a look at the origins of Matter & Motion.

It’s July, the year is 1996, the setting, Rowan College. I am living off campus with some mates. They mostly didn’t work, and rarely made rent. Steps had to be taken, parties had to be thrown: Rent Parties if you will. A very simple, ages old, formula was employed: Music + Ladies get in free + Dudes with a $5 spot get the red cup and the Natty Ice from a keg. All the furniture from the first floor would go out in the yard. We would throw one, or two, a month and we were pulling rent + utilities with ease.

For being just house parties, we had large and diverse crowds. Way less Heads of Meat than you would think, and not one fight the entire time we were in that joint. I am usually playing all night, and I am playing everything. Old school hip hop, 90’s rap, Cybotron/Egyptian Lover/Planet Rock/Al-Naafiysh old school electro, House, Liquid Polka, Amish Techno, and as many Florida and Cali breaks tracks I could get. Basically, you name it I played it. That attracted a few promoter acquaintances of mine, and then some unexpected people started popping in to hang or play….Dave Aude from Moonshine…Karl-K from Candyland…Cosmic Kev from Silk City….Tony-D out of Trenton.

Fast forward a few months to a Saturday in November. On this night, a guy walks into the "booth" wearing a Kangol. He is sporting a leopard skin headphone case, and a Caffeine record bag. “My name is Allen, this is Joe, can we spin?” Allen was going by Dominator back then…and Joe Candidi was just Joe at the time…later to become a very well-known Drum & Bass DJ: J-Smooth.

Anyway, Allen hit the decks and smashed a hard break together with Biz Markie’s-Just a Friend…I thought, that’s that, this dude is from my Tribe.

The meeting itself was a serendipity. The party was supposed to be on Friday. That Friday morning, I got a last minute call to play up in Boston at The Avalon\Axis. That same Friday, Allen was playing at The Limelight in NYC. To top it all off, I flew up to Boston, but all the flights back were canceled. I had to catch the train back down to Jersey for the party on Saturday.

It's 23 years ago now. We can still get on some decks and create a vibe that people pick up on.

It's a collaboration borne of Austin, Texas-based musicians -- Roky Erickson, a pioneer of psychedelic rock, and Okkervil River, critical darlings of the indie-rock set who have performed with The Decemberists, the New Pornographers, The National and others. The result? Listen up.

The King Is Dead, the latest from The Decemberists, features familiar themes and voices (and guitars, in the case of R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, who joins). Or is it a departure? And is it charming or repulsive? For such a great record, we really can't agree on much.

This has been a longtime coming.

From Frightened Rabbit and Beach House to The National and Rush, there's been something for just about everyone. Here, we give you our top 10 records of the year, and one added honorable mention that really put a ribbon on it. Thanks for listening!

Majesty Shredding, the long-awaited ninth album from old-schoolers Superchunk, rocks pretty hard. But is that a good thing? We shred through the cheese.

Swedish dance-pop phenom Robyn recently released Body Talk, actually a trilogy of EPs released during 2010. As far as electronic dance records go, we agree that Robyn is doing it better than anyone else these days -- including Lady Gaga. That's right. Oh, and she uses a lot of four-letter words, so, you know, fair warning.

Sure, F**k You is a terrific single -- but how does the rest of Cee Lo's latest record, The Lady Killer, measure up? How about among the best of 2010? You heard that right.

Old-school punkers OFF! are releasing a collection of 16 songs in under 18 minutes that prove punk is alive and well. Or, is this just more evidence that punk died decades ago, despite this effort from former members of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Burning Brides and others to reclaim their glory days? Fair warning about some colorful language here.

The Fool, the first full-length effort from the L.A. all-female quartet Warpaint, is a dreamy blend of texture and tone. We approve -- and not only because we, too, are a dreamy blend of texture and tone.

Grinderman is the band that succeeds Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, in that it comprises Nick Cave and former members of the Bad Seeds. So is this just another Bad Seeds record, or something new? Check it out, dear listeners.

Another from the Vintage Vinegar Series - Live@Delerium 11/20/1998 - This was the first night we did for Area609 Joe :) Allen, Sean Deep, and I used to hold court at this venue. Mainfloor had one of the best sound systems around for a small venue...and they had some nice equipment for the area/time period :) With it's casino proximity, this place got thick after 2AM. Mostly breaks/breaky house/proggy breaks...ya know, breaks stuff.

Radiohead drummer Philip Selway has offered a record of his own: Familial, a quiet and nearly percussion-free effort that is nuanced and introspective. Some of us may find it a wee bit boring, but there's a backstory to it that makes all the difference.

Damien Jurado's solo album St. Bartlett was produced by Richard Swift, himself a successful independent singer-songwriter. The duo spent a few days together at the end of August and banged out another record of cover songs, written by acts as diverse as John Denver and Kraftwerk, and they make them completely their own. Confused? We unravel it all.

It’s an independent rock band, yes, but members of Bridgeport, Conn., group Saint Bernadette insist they’re not indie-rockers. Either way, the band made its full-length debut last October with the lounge-noir collection “In the Ballroom.? Led by singer Meredith DiMenna and guitarist Keith Saunders, Saint Bernadette returns in early March with a new EP and a gig at South by Southwest in Austin.
