  • What's my current workout split look like?

  • What do my journal entries look like?

When it comes to fitness and health, what works for one person doesn't always work for another. My guest this week, Mike Baiocco, knows this well.

Many of us have heard the phrase "sitting is the new smoking," but where did this come from, and is it actually true? Or is there more nuance needed? This is exactly what this week's guest, Dr. Rick Richey, and I discuss in this episode.

Today's modern, sedentary lifestyle — where we sit in our cars, we sit at our desks, and we sit on our couches — is certainly doing its damage to our health outcomes. So how do we address it, and is more needed than just a daily workout?

Rick has a Master's degree in exercise science and a Doctorate in Health Science. He's a husband and a father, a gym owner, and many personal trainers may know him through the educational work he does with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), including hosting the NASM CPT Podcast.

You've got questions? I've got answers! Another Fit Dad Q&A is primed and ready for your ears.

The questions from Instagram and the Fit Dad Forum I answer this week are:

• Is there an age limit on getting fit?
• How often do your AirPods fall out during a workout?
• I'm going to take a break for two months, how do I maintain the muscle progress?
• Any different/unique chest exercises to add to chest day to help grow pecs?
• I realize any physical activity is better than nothing. However, in terms of “getting the biggest bang for your buck” would a HIIT workout for 10-15 minutes be better than a brisk walk for 1-3 miles? The goal being to build lean muscle and lose weight. These workouts are in addition to a weekly weight training workout.
• So I just did a pretty hard swim workout and have a push lift session. The question is, would you lower the reps or the amount of weight during the strength session?

We discuss all this and more in this wide-ranging conversation.

Dr. Glenn Livingston is a veteran psychologist with a pointed belief that it is possible to stop overeating and "never binge again."

In fact, he wrote a book about it, appropriately called Never Binge Again (https://neverbingeagain.com/). What makes Dr. Livingston uniquely aware of the issues of overeating, stress eating, and binge eating is the fact that he was once obese himself and he spent years working for the food industry and saw firsthand how manipulative food processing can be.

Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating. But most important to his approach was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.

My guest this week is James Townsend, an incredible athlete, CrossFit gym owner, husband, and father. James is also a black man, and this interview was recorded at the height of the protests and demonstrations in the weeks after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

In this conversation, James details his life and experiences as a black man in America, one who had a child at a young age, had a chance to go to the NFL and passed it up, and as a CrossFit owner, had to witness CrossFit founder Greg Glassman's insensitive tweets and emails that eventually led to Glassman's removal from the organization.

Conversations like the one in today's show have to continue, and I am proud and excited to release this episode. While much of our conversation centers on the relevant topics of what's going on in our world, James and I do get a chance to talk about life, fitness, and fatherhood, including how his daughters are already beasts in the gym at young ages.

Jaime's intent with Alley-Oop is to get dads to realize the major effect their presence has on their daughters livelihood and well-being far into the future, and I am 100-percent in favor of it.

Check out Jaime's work with Alley-Oop at https://alleyoopduos.com/.

It's a new Fit Dad Q&A episode for your ears to enjoy this week, and I've got some great questions to answer!

Questions answered this episode:

  • How have you kept up your fitness goals during this pandemic?
  • My left bicep/arm is weaker and smaller than my right. How do you "catch it up?"
  • How long and how many days a week do you workout? I'm wondering if I worked out more if I would see results quicker.
  • I seem to have lost all motivation to get in shape. My main goal is to put on muscle. I have been trying all sorts of variations and programs and nothing seems to work.

This week's topic: How does late-night snacking affect you and your fitness and health goals?

Here is the link to the research I referred to during today's chat: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4425165/

The Friday Reflex is a roughly 10- to 15-minute episode each Friday of my thoughts on a particular idea or issue that's been on my mind lately. It's short but — I hope — powerful.

In this pre-Father's Day episode of the show, I am joined by Matt Fox, an Australian-based husband, father, and bodyweight training coach.

Four years ago, Matt ditched the frustrations and mundane-ness of going to the gym in favor of do-anywhere bodyweight training, and he's thrived ever since. Not only is he feeling better and stronger than before, but he's also found new time to spend with his family while inspiring others to do the same.

In this episode, Matt and I discuss what that transition was like, what his results have been, and the myths he hears most often about bodyweight training.

You can find Matt on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mattycfox/, and you can check out Matt's work online at https://bodyweightbuilt.com/.

This week's guest is Justin Campbell, who has worked in the health, fitness, and wellness space for many years and has recently set off on an entrepreneurial venture that takes him even deeper into all things wellness.

In this episode, for the first time, Justin publicly talks about the sexual abuse he experienced as a child, and how he has worked to move past that pain.

We discuss the thoughts he had growing up, the struggles he encountered, and how it affects him now as a husband and father. Justin's hope is that by sharing his story, he can help others find their voice as well.

My guest this week is Justin Murphy of iCoach Nutrition (https://icoachnutrition.com/).

Justin and I cover a lot of ground during our conversation, from his insights into how his nutrition coaching clients are sticking to plan during stay-at-home orders, to how he came to figure out he wanted to be a nutrition coach, the digging into his past and how he set his life straight after an incident that could have easily derailed him.

Of course, we get into family and his own fitness, as you might expect. This is a great conversation, and I'm grateful to have Justin on the show.

Are entrepreneurs and leaders born or made?

That's the question this week's guest on the Fit Dad Fitness Podcast asks all of his guests on his own show.

Michael Chernow is a business builder and entrepreneur, a husband and a father, and one really fit dude.

He hosts his own podcast, Born or Made, in which he tackles all sorts of topics on building and scaling and growing businesses, which Michael has had plenty of experience doing himself.

In this episode, Michael and I chat about his journey, and how much of a role fitness has played in helping him be at the top of his game as a family man and in business.

What will it be like when gyms and fitness centers open back up in a post-COVID-19 world? How will gym owners and managers implement new policies? What will gym goers responsibilities be to help keep things safe?

My guest this week, Chris Stevenson, spent 20 years owning and operating gyms and now consults with fitness businesses to help them create amazing customer service experiences. Chris brings his years of experience to the show to talk about what he thinks will happen when gyms reopen their doors, and what he sees as the biggest challenges.

Fit Dad Lincoln Beard joins the show this week to dive into what this historic period in time is like as a fitness coach and trainer, and what it's been like adjusting to life outside of a gym.

I've been drawn to Lincoln and the quality fitness content he produces on his social media for quite some time now, and I really appreciated getting the chance to learn more about Lincoln's background, his journey through fitness, and how he's trying to help others with the content he produces each day.

Of course, we also get into life as a Fit Dad, which Lincoln brings some awesome perspective to as well.
