Global Brigades is the largest student-funded humanitarian organization, and was started by Marquette University students in 2003. Most recently, it launched a for-profit spinoff, Eskala, which is a microfinance company focused on breaking the cycle of poverty through banking. Efforts to attract jobs to Milwaukee’s Century City business park have been an important issue for the community. They discuss connecting surrounding residents, many of whom need jobs, to the city’s economic development efforts. That’s an issue since the public backlash torpedoed the Strauss Brands headquarters development at Century City in October.
