Taxes are a pain. They are a thorn in our side. Paying taxes does mean that you made money (maybe - phantom gains in Mutual Funds??), so it has been called a “good problem to have”, but it is still a problem. However, NOT planning ahead for taxes and NOT understanding fully how taxes work in retirement, can make that pain much more significant.

Often times we hear about “The Year In Review”, looking back at major events that have happened in the prior year. In our personal financial lives, this is also what we do during tax preparation. Filing taxes is literally putting together a personal “Financial Year In Review”, but we are planners. This is a show about planning. Planning is about looking forward and being proactive, not looking back, being historical, or being reactive. Certainly, we can gain some knowledge from history (maybe we should gain and retain a little more), but we have to plan ahead and keep moving forward. So, this is a show about the “Year In Preview” and some of the important topics and events we will cover in the year ahead. Many (probably too many) are out doing last-minute Christmas shopping this weekend. Some studies show that people (men in particular) wait until the last minute, even right up until Christmas Eve to even start shopping for Christmas. Unfortunately, we also have this same quality of procrastination when it comes to our financial planning and well-being. Let’s talk about the psychology of financial procrastination and how damaging it can be. This is not a “guilt trip”. This is a proactive reminder that some things are too important to “wait until later”. When working on your financial future, there's a significant difference between doing it independently and collaborating with a qualified financial advisor. Working on your own has its merits, particularly if you're proactive, well-informed, and take the initiative in managing what you've diligently built. However, there are instances where receiving misguided advice from a trusted individual or making emotional decisions can lead to unfavorable outcomes. With a financial advisor like Chris McIntire, you can expect to stay informed and receive timely updates regarding your portfolio. Most importantly, decisions are made based on thorough planning rather than emotional "gut feelings." Chris McIntire discussed the need to plan for income withdrawals in retirement, the importance of factoring in the tools used, cash flow rate, and the need to be as efficient as possible to make the most of your money. Chris also discusses the effects of the interest rate environment on investment performance and income rates, as well as the importance of considering sequence of returns risk when planning for retirement.
Taxes, taxes, and MORE TAXES. Throughout our life we have taxes. Every dollar earned, invested, transacted, or grown has some type of tax plan. At the end of the year, we count it all up to make sure we pay the IRA what we owe. While working and earning a paycheck, taxes aren't your favorite thing, but at least you are still earning an income. In retirement, while living on what you saved, how do you effectively manage paying and controlling taxes? What if taxes go up? These are some questions Chris McIntire discusses on "Your Game Plan For Retirement" and when putting together the written plan for retirement. It is smart to have savings, but it's even smarter to manage taxes and keep as much as possible. Valentine's Day is near, and while that is approaching another thing that is always certain for everybody is approaching, leaving your spouse and not giving them any help financially or insight on what all the accounts are for or what they do. In this episode, Chris McIntire stresses the need for your spouse to at least be around when discussing the financial portfolio and make their own studies on it so that if anything bad was to happen they could take the reigns and continue on with all the financial information so that's not something they need to worry about if you were to pass. So this Valentine's Day think to yourself, "if I left this person right now would they know the account credentials?" "Do they know how to access the Roths, and 401k's?" and if you have kids, "Do they know about the 529 and how to access it?" These are serious questions and serious consequences that are what a lot of couples suffer from because they don't involve each other when going over their financial portfolios and where everything is at. This Valentines Day, while thinking about this, give Chris McIntire a call at (800) 868-1194 so you both will be caught up and on the same page of where y'all are at and how you can prepare each other for future incidents. We hope this edition of Game Plan For Retirement gives insightful tips on why it is important for your spouse to know as much as you do about y'alls portfolio, so that if anything was to happen both of you would be knowing what's where financially.

We are officially in 2023. We have had our ups and downs throughout the start of this decade, including 2020's Covid and 2021, with the continuation of Covid and quarantining, along with the start of market troubles and inflation. Then we hit 2022. If you wanted to describe 2022 with one word it would be VOLATILITY, especially with inflation that just kept rising, making it harder for small town shops and businesses to keep up with prices. Now we are in 2023. This year has already started off on an odd note, including the new release of the Secure Act 2.0. What it has in store for 2023 in the coming months and years will definitely take some getting used to, and adjustments in planning but, it will not be impossible to conquer 2023 like we have other years. We hope you enjoy and make sure to "Like", "Subscribe", and "Share" with your friends and family to see what we can look forward to in 2023.

April & May were especially tough months for investors, extending losses for the year: the S&P 500 fell -12.8%, the #Dow declined nearly -8.6%, and the #Nasdaq retreated more than -22.5%. When the markets sell off and there are concerns that losses could continue to grow, many investors wonder if there are any reasonable alternatives aside from putting money in the bank or stuffing it under their mattress. It should be no secret that there are indeed many alternatives to risking money in the stock market that can still produce reasonable growth potential. Government backed I-Bonds are a great alternative for starters. They are currently paying 9.62%, but you can only purchase $10,000 per year, per person and can't use retirement money. Other alternatives exist that can provide protection from market losses, but allow either a fixed rate or the ability to share in the gains of the market with a walk-away cash value into the future. There are also market based strategies that can help limit losses and define your outcome. Tune in this week as Chris McIntire discusses risk and market alternatives on GamePlanForRetirement.
Market #volatility continues through the month of May. The #Fed has reversed course and the market generally does not like change. Since 2008, the Fed has been lowering interest rates and simultaneously buying trillions in mostly US Treasuries. They knew they were taking a risk with simulative policies and putting all this cheap liquidity out into the open market. To put it simply, money (liquidity) has been plentiful and cheap to access. Now the Fed is looking to take out some of the excess stimulus efforts while making accessing money more expensive, and they are doing it pretty quickly. We understand that market downturns and volatility can make you feel anxious. We welcome your questions and would be happy to talk through your concerns. Please call Chris McIntire with questions, or schedule a complimentary consultation.

We are living longer, the market continues to affect our assets and our income, we have more to pay in taxes than we planned for, and the cost of healthcare is much higher, potentially threatening to derail retirement for a generation. Ohio's retirement resource, Chris McIntire helps navigate the new retirement landscape and helps listeners better understand what it takes to build for, achieve, and maintain financial success and confidence throughout our new retirement.
