From stretchy bands and balloon balls to pool noodles, weighted stuffed animals, and even simple paper plates, I'm sharing how I use these inexpensive tools to support creative movement, sensory regulation, music listening, and connection without overwhelming students. I'll also share a few of my favorite activities and songs to try with each prop!

What do you do when your music class becomes chaotic and you can’t seem to get them back?
It happens. Sometimes it seems like there's just something in the air. Sometimes, something happened earlier in the day with the kids in their class. Maybe a few kids are having a particularly challenging day. Sometimes it is just close to impossible to get the attention back and to get that sense of calm back.

Stephanie Leavell, MT-BC shares with you four ways to use music with transitions, which Stephanie describes as "getting kids to 'work with her' instead of 'against her" by using music.
Transitions can be difficult for young kids, but a song can really prepare them and go through that change successfully. Giving children advanced notice combined with a song, can serve as that gentle reminder & “timer” before they transition to something else.

Stacey Peasley is a singer songwriter and performer for children and families, as well as an early childhood music specialist in the Metro West Boston area. After the birth of her first child, Stacey started to write songs inspired by her journey of motherhood and later on, merged both her career as an educator and her passion for music to write and perform engaging and educational songs for kids.
Stacey joined Stephanie on this week's episode of the Music For Kiddos Podcast and shared how becoming a mother, watching kids interact with each other, and performing at schools and day centers has inspired her to change her songwriting to curriculum and literacy based music instead of general family topics. To answer these questions and more, Stephanie Leavell sat down with music therapist Amy Love of Pediatric Music Therapy to talk about the work she does as a music therapist working in a medical setting.
Amy Love, MA, MT-BC, CPMT is a music therapist who currently works for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN where she developed initial programming for patients with rare and acute diagnoses from around the world. She is also the founder of Pediatric Music Therapy, a website that provides continuing education opportunities, support and resources for students and board-certified music therapists interested in expanding their knowledge of medical music therapy.
Amy joined on today's episode to talk about supporting children during medical procedures as a music therapist.

Did you know that guitar is the instrument that is most requested to learn by kids? It probably comes to no surprise to you if you are a music therapist or music educator who teaches adaptive music lessons. The guitar is versatile, fun, and kids cannot wait to play and accompany themselves signing their favorite songs, that is, if we are successful in teaching them how to play the guitar.
The problem is that there is no consistent, child-centered guitar method out there that helps kids go from 0 to playing the chords of their favorite songs in a fun, developmentally appropriate manner. Until now.

Stephanie Leavell is an improvisational music therapist. What does an improvisational music therapists do?
The approach of an improvisational music therapists in any of these settings is really “in the moment.” We often make up songs on the spot with what the client is needing or we are reacting to what is happening in the moment. Sometimes the entire song isn't made up. Sometimes it's just a tiny portion of the song that's made up.
There are three very simple components to improvisation that I think are key to having a successful experience:
- Structure
- Take Risks
- Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

The way that we present music to kids is really important because we want to help them to be as successful as possible. Fewer words, more music is all about communicating with music and is not necessarily communicating without words. It means that we are increasing our communication in music so that we can best support kids.
