Dr. Hynd Bouhia knows a thing or two about rising to a position of leadership against the odds. As a little girl growing up in Morocco, she abhorred the poverty that surrounded her, and vowed to help abolish it. She dreamed of going abroad to get her education, a dream her family saw as an impossible flight of fancy.
"Set your sights lower", they told her "the only thing you're going to be leading as a woman is your household".
But little Hynd believed in her dream, and in herself. That doesn't mean it was easy. There were sacrifices, disappointments, and painful losses along the way, including the devastating forced shut-down and liquidation of a business she'd spent years building.

A native of Philadelphia, Beth Ann grew up spending her summers at the shore. Her parents would say she was born with sand in her toes. At Egg Harbor Township High School, in New Jersey, a teacher strongly encouraged and supported her writing ambitions.
Beth Ann continued onto college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduating with a degree in Journalism. Following graduation, she moved to Delaware and got married. While pregnant with her first child she enrolled in the Masters in Marketing program at Wilmington University. Her son Briton was born the morning of the graduation ceremony. He is the original inspiration behind the book series. Briton’s curiosity and eagerness to learn is a joy to watch and contagious. Trailing in his sandy footprints are his younger siblings Amelia and Judah.

Meet the guest:
Brighde Reborn is Leslie and Janice Sommers' first novel of a planned trilogy book series. Besides writing, Leslie loves traveling and singing. She was bitten by the travel bug after going to Ireland for the first time and since then she has visited Cuba, London, Sicily, and Scotland. Leslie is also a very gifted singer (classically trained for all genres) who has been cast as well as hired to sing throughout New Jersey and New York for concerts, cabarets, and weddings. Like Bridget, Leslie was born and raised in New Jersey and she inherited her love of reading from her mother.
Janice is a classically trained ballerina and has danced in Lincoln Center. After completing her Education degree, she focused on taking care of her family and encouraging her children to follow their dreams. Her passion for books and music was passed on to the next generation and, like Leslie, Janice has also found a love for traveling after recently going to the UK and Sicily with her family.

Growing up on set with her legendary scream-queen mother, Dee Wallace (Cujo, E.T.), she had days of licking off mommy’s fake blood and watching behind-the-scenes movie magic. Seeing the world with mom and dad gave her the travel bug at an early age—until Gabrielle experienced a real-life horror when she lost her father suddenly at age seven.
After many years in the industry herself, Stone transitioned from meaty acting roles to writing and directing. Stacy Dyson is a poet, acapella vocalist, playwright who specializes in the life and times of the Black woman. “Someone has to sing for my sisters. Their lives, loves, philosophy...There are centuries of stories begging to be told. I’m lucky enough to be one able to make those voices be heard”.

“But the stage is my natural habitat. It’s fine to tell your stories, but for me, unless I can vibe, interact with a crowd, my job is only half-done.”

Why this Story Needs to be Told.
This week, I'm going to pull back the veil and walk down memory lane with you as I share my journey in becoming a published author. How I overcame all those road blocks, finally having my thoughts into books, and my story to be told. It wasn't an easy path but all the thorns along the way has made my writing all the more indelible to the reader.

Meet our guests: The Radical Granddaughters is a group of passionate young women dispersed all over the world — the US, Brazil, Australia, Vietnam, and Scotland — and inspired by the dedicated work of the Radical Grandma Collective. During the summer of 2019, we traveled to Na Nong Bong, a rural village in northern Thailand, to conduct interviews, learn about Thai culture, and witness firsthand the effects of mining on the community during a homestay via a summit we attended. The village had been exploited by an Australian mining company years earlier and was still faced with a disrupted ecosystem, long lasting health issues, and drastic changes to the land. It was through the courage of the grandmothers in the village who banded together to return to their roots of weaving and raise money with hand woven scarves that the village was able to put forth a brave front and fight off the company. Inspired by their hard word, dedication, connection with their roots, and fierceness we have decided to write a children’s book to spread their story. We think this narrative is extremely critical because it provides an alternative perspective to today’s ecologically wasteful world, destroys the social and demure characterization of grandmas, encourages entrepreneurialism and problem solving, and inspires young children to become involved in social justice and activism. Although our book isn’t published yet, we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring this story to life with dignity to the people it represents and engage the audience it’s meant for.

She was so deeply moved by the intelligence, humor, and innate desire the young men had to improve their conditions through introspective work that she left for South America to study and teach yoga, meditation, and writing, and develop a comprehensive curriculum for incarcerated youth. Leah is currently a teacher and Recreation Program Leader at a correctional facility. She facilitates public and private workshops and yoga lessons and is a reiki master practitioner. Her website (fourminutesaday.org) a reference to her initial commitment to meditate for (at least!) four minutes a day.
Leah Gooch teaches yoga, meditation, writing, and art in order to help individuals approach a deeper awareness of their existence. She offers youth and adults the tools to mitigate frustrations and transmute anger and sadness into positive and creative outcomes. After teaching art in New York City for eight years she facilitated the creation of a mural inside of Crossroads Detention Center in Brooklyn, completed by fifteen justice-involved youth.

During the four years she has lived and taught at public and private schools in Colombia, she has connected emotionally with local girls and realized there is very little discussion, education or resources available to them on the subject of leadership and empowerment for young women. Having herself benefited from women’s circles and being mentored by women, she realized how critical it is for young women to have positive role models who are not a family member, friend or boyfriend, nor a therapist. Erin is the lead visionary behind Proyector Floracer and serves as the Chief Program Officer, directing the creation and delivery of all workshops and follow-on programs. Along with her team of employees, volunteers and advisors, Erin is committed to creating a safe space for teenage girls in Colombia to discuss issues about relationships, education, opportunities, and careers during these critical decision-making years.
Sheridan Bibo (Australia) brings to her role as Proyecto Florecer’s Marketing Director a passion for cultural understanding borne from her dual degree in International Aid Development and Community Development from Murdoch University in Western Australia, and her real-world experience serving for-profit and nonprofit organizations while living in her native Australia and abroad. Sheridan’s work with community organizations throughout Latin America has given her a deep understanding of the social issues confronting young women as well as experience managing social media programs, event logistics, content management, campaign analysis, and community development.

Healing from trauma is complex. Especially when women are asking the wrong questions: “What is wrong with me?” Rather “what is wrong with the system?” Fear, guilt & shame messaging dominates the story.
The question to ask: “If you are feeling fear, shame or guilt, ask, is this my story or is this a larger story I have been told by somebody else: family, culture, mainstream society or religion. Any story that tells us we are not good enough --- something is wrong with that story.”
