Cub Scout Drop-out Bill Sharpsteen became enamored with outdoor exploration on a high school backpacking trip. His inquisitive sensibilities and desire for adventure lead him to a career as a journalist, photographer, and documentary producer. Jesse St. Louis has always been enamored with the chaos of moving water. Yet, an obsessive pursuit of his acting career kept him blind to the natural world around him for many years. A fateful experience atop a waterfall in L.A. would inspire him to reevaluate his identity—ultimately leading him on a path to exploration and adventure travel. Jason and Jesse spoke one day near that fateful waterfall about his “infamous” YouTube channel, two years traversing New Zealand by van, the appeal of natural waterslides, the joys of coasteering and canyoneering, and his emotional connection to Wilson Phillips and the San Gabriel Mountains.

Lincoln Stoller was introduced to climbing at the age of thirteen which quickly evolved into mountaineering. Throughout the 70s and 80s he climbed with storied greats such as Fred Beckey. His curious mind lead him to pursuits such as soar plane piloting, diving, exploring foreign cultures, and the studies of physics and psychology. He is the author of several books, a therapist, and a grief counselor for the AAC Climber’s Grief Fund. He and Jason spoke across the internet one morning about his quest to understand humanity and the world, the psychology of climbers, and what he has learned from his clients.

Justin Pugh’s childhood outdoor experiences were minimal. This began to change while attending university in Florida where he discovered the secret realm of urban exploration. Urbex was his initial gateway to the outdoors—a doorway that exploded open after moving to California and joining a camping trip in the Mojave desert. Justin is now an outdoor generalist versed in many outdoor pursuits and an adventure filmmaker. He and Jason spoke one night in Altadena’s dark woods about his path to exploration, his current career as a rope access tech, the intricacies involved in filming a documentary in Death Valley, the legend of the venerable Scott Swaney, and how it feels to be busted by police while urban exploring.

It’s the classic story where a country girl meets a city boy, they get married, start a family, and start rappelling down waterfalls around the world. Tale as old as time? Maybe not. Danielle and Brian Monroy discovered the adventure of canyoneering after a failed family backpacking trip when their children were on the cusp of adulthood. They now travel the globe exploring dry and water-filled gorges while giving back to their canyon community through leadership and stewardship. Jason met them at their home to drink lemonade, discuss the impact of canyons on their life, and reveal the reasons for Danielle’s disdain for blue webbing.

Italian software developer, Luca Chiarabini prefers a life chasing adventures. His habitats of choice are dark damp caves or thundering, cascading rivers. Luca passionately believes in sharing the outdoors with others and does so by documenting unestablished areas, placing new canyon routes, designing software for outdoor exploration, and volunteering as a cave rescue member. He and Jason hid from the rain one afternoon to discuss these pursuits, a family trip to Antarctica, and the many things he considers to be bullshit.

Some choose to travel into the wilderness alone. Jason discusses the pros and cons of solitary backpacking with previous show guests: Shawnte, Pamela, and Alden in between sips of cocoa and bouts of laughter. They review the whys, the dangers, loneliness, planning, packing, navigation, hiker stink, 29 cat holes, and the rancid aroma of bear saliva.

As an unassuming bullied epileptic with no interest in sports, Alex Staniforth never pictured himself as an athlete. A hill-walking trip at 13 changed his perspective and encouraged him to confront his fears. His quest to climb Mount Everest transformed him physically, mentally, and socially. At the age of 20, Alex is now an endurance adventurer, motivational speaker, charity fundraiser, and published author. He and Jason spoke via Skype about his path to the outdoors, his attempts on Everest during two tragic seasons, and surviving an avalanche.

Jordan Urbanovich and Evelyn Wilroy were high school friends enamored with travel. Jordan embraced a nomadic existence and turned exploring the world into a lifestyle. Evelyn pursued a traditional career path and found herself yearning for more. The two joined forces to travel Nepal and document their journey while building an entity known as PRCPTION Travel, a non-profit using media to connect the world. Jason met Evelyn and Jordan in Towsley Canyon Park where they discussed travel, fear, social media, connectivity, and creating music with Jamaican children.

Shawnte Salabert was raised on the mean streets of Milwaukie where a local Boys and Girls Club introduced her to the outdoors. Her newfound love of camp and adventure led her away from Wisconsin as she sought the secrets of becoming Yogi Bear in human form. Eventually, she stumbled into Los Angeles where her snark landed her a side gig writing for Modern Hiker when she isn’t hiking or drooling over Mark Ruffalo. Jason and Little Shay Shay tried to stay on topic one night in Silverlake Meadow as they discussed her life and mocked each other.

Alden Anderson had an atypical childhood. Communally raised in a sheltered religious order, his access to the outdoors and exploration—and secular society—were limited. At the age of 21, he broke his billion-year contract with his indoctrinated faith and began the transition into a standard American lifestyle. While learning to navigate adult responsibilities, he also embarked on an exploration of the outdoors and adventure. Alden and Jason crouched beneath a tree in a Tujunga park on Independence Day to discuss the eventful happenings on Alden’s quest to make the most of his personal freedom.

Mike Hastings was raised in the frigid motor city of Michigan where a love for machines and a superhuman tolerance for cold temperatures was born. Several crashes later, he still chases his two-wheeled passion through moto clubs and long distance riding trips. He and Jason discussed these pursuits one evening on Jason’s back patio shortly before being massacred in a game of Risk: Legacy.

Johanna Turner is a patient person. Hiking miles into the wilderness periodically to maintain camera gear that may never capture a single image of wildlife requires patience. It also rewards hard-work and dedication. Only camera trappers ever capture imagery of wildlife in their natural environment unmolested by human interaction. Jason followed along one morning as Johanna tended her cameras along with her friend, Dan and her dog, Ripley. They discussed the pursuit of camera trapping, its challenges, and rewards.

Dusty Hulet may not have been born in a tent—perhaps to his father’s chagrin—but he did grow up never missing a Boy Scout camp-out. Being raised in an active outdoor family laid a foundation for adventure in him that continues to grow. He makes a living as an entrepreneur and filmmaker, occasionally crawling through bear dens, and pursues a variety of activities on the side. He can be found in the snow or in raging rivers, perhaps even on horseback. He was once responsible for the lives and good times of many vacationers seated on his Alaskan tour bus and is to blame for the temporary sitings of the elusive Yellowstone Gorilla. Jason found him momentarily in Liberty Park in Salt Lake City where they chatted about his life instead of allowing him to prepare for a trip to Haiti.

Recently she threw herself into a three-month nomadic adventure across the united States letting fate and circumstance decide her course. Much of her trip has involved climbing throughout the states and adopting the dirtbag lifestyle. Although traveling solo, she has spent very little time alone having acquired new friends from across the globe. She and Jason initially met climbing in Nevada and reunited in Yosemite’s Camp 4 to discuss how her wanderings have affected her perspective on life.

Scott Swaney is the Chuck Norris of Southern California. At 67 years old, he is still going strong despite his penchant to get himself into trouble. He is a lifer—one of those outdoorsmen who has stuck with exploratory pursuits for many decades and doesn’t intend to stop. Scott was diving into caves and scaling mountains before society had the good sense to start regulating these activities. Nowadays, he is the primary force behind the exploration of Death Valley’s many uninvestigated canyons. Sit back and let him regale you with tales of a life devoted to scrappy adventures and close calls.

Saveria Tilden keeps busy. When she discovered the outdoors, she realized it needed to be shared. She made that happen by becoming an educator and consultant for various businesses and organizations. She works with the American Hiking Society, the Sierra Club, REI Outdoor School, Transforming Youth Outdoors, IslandWood, and Nature Play Western Australia. And she still finds time for herself outdoors. Jason and Saveria weathered a Southern California drizzle storm to discuss her role in the outdoors and why she values it.

Klaus Gerhart wasn’t always active outdoors. There was a time when his primary exercise was operating a television remote. Several years ago he decided to journey outside and the course of his life changed drastically. The discovery of technical canyoneering ended any desire to return to a sedentary existence. A few years later he would be recognized as an expert in the field. He is the founder of Uber Adventures, a Los Angeles based training school and gear shop specializing in canyoneering. Jason joined him in his air-conditioned shop in heat-ridden Chatsworth to discuss what drew him to canyoneering and how it has impacted his life.
