On April 22, 2010, Jonathan Ward of the wonderful Excavated Shellac mp3 blog was my guest in the studio. Jonathan shared a wonderful selection of music from his collection of 78s from around the world, none of which had appeared on the blog or on his new compilation, Excavated Shellac: Strings, which has just been released on the Parlortone label. The fidelity of the recording is a little wobbly, but the music is glorious. Go to Spinitron.com for the full playlist. Enjoy!

Though he’s been my guest twice in the past to select records and chit chat during WZBC fundraisers, Keith Fullerton Whitman’s July 3rd appearance marked his live debut on RF. For whatever reason, the stars aligned and the recording came out particularly well. Perhaps the gods were paying Keith back for introducing me to the wonders of Turkish psych some years back. Who knows? In any case, to find out more about the process behind KFW’s music, check out my interview with him.

On June 19, 2008, local tape maestro and Intransitive Recordings head honcho, Howard Stelzer, performed a live set in the WZBC FM studio. You can read a short piece by Howie giving you a run-down of his current cassette faves in the “Featured” section of the site. Though Howie has been my guest on the program in the past (playing records and talking Intransitive) this was his live performance on the program.

The RF podcast has hit the quarter century mark — woot! In honor of this quasi-auspicious occasion, I bust out not one but two new tracks by COH (including a cracking semi-rarity), as well as not one but two tracks from Pedro Carneiro’s Improbable Transgressions 2CD (which I inexplicably misidentify on mic as Impossible Transgressions — whoops). There’s also fresh music from Giuseppe Ielasi, White Williams, Frank Bretschneider, and Jessica Rylan (yes, I mispronounce the name of her song, “Phantasia,” just to make things extra special — whoops again). There are also some golden oldies in the mix for your listening pleasure, so enjoy!

This podcast features a live set by Boston native, Murmer, aka Patrick McGinley. A longtime resident of London, Patrick works with field recordings and found sounds, framing sounds from our environment which normally pass through our ears unnoticed and unremarked, but which out of context become unrecognizable, alien and extraordinary: crackling charcoal, a squeaking escalator, a buzzing insect, or one’s own breath. Patrick was in town to play at the Intransitive Recordings show as part of Boston’s First Night 2007.

There is a lot of scratchy vinyl and much to enjoy on this latest program, which is the first non-special edition podcast in quite some time. Enjoy!
Note: In the podcast, I neglect to mention that "Sunny-Side Up" is a duo between Christian Marclay and Gunter Muller. Very bad form. Consider yourself fully informed now.

This podcast features a live set by Bernhard Gal and i8u. It was first broadcast on August 24, 2006 on WZBC.
Rare Frequency Podcast (Special Ed. 07): Bernhard Gal & i8u Live 08.24.06
Austrian-born composer and sound artist Bernhard Gal creates electronic and electro-acoustic music, as well as compositions for acoustic instruments. His projects and sound installations incorporate light, objects, video projections and spatial concepts. He runs the record label Gromoga Records and is director of the Austrian art organization "sp ce". Currently, Gal divides his time between Vienna and Berlin, where he also teaches sound art at the University of Arts.
France Jobin, aka i8u, is a sound / installation / web artist residing in Montreal, Canada. i8u’s audio art can be qualified as sound-sculpture. It reveals powerful, opaque and complex sound environments where analog and digital meet. Her installation/web art follow a parallel path, incorporating both musical and visual elements. I8u has created solo recordings for (bake/staalplaat) (piehead) (oral) as well as collaborative works with Martin Tétreault, David Kristian and Tomas Phillips. She has been included in compilations on ATAK (Japan), bremsstrahlung (USA) and Mutek (Canada).
This podcast features a live set by Yuko Nexus6 in her Boston debut. It was first broadcast on August 24, 2006 on WZBC.
Rare Frequency Podcast (Special Ed. 06): Yuko Nexus6 Live 08.24.06
Yuko Nexus 6 is a sound artist based in Hikone, Japan. Using a mixture of field recordings, cut-up samples, digital processing, and her own voice, Yuko creates beguiling, often slyly humorous, always wonderfully idiosyncratic sonic collages and compositions. Conscious of the unspectacular dryness of an artist in front of her computer, in performance she is constantly inventing and adding little elements like grains of sand that derail her music towards something alive and astute. She received an honorary mention in Europe's Prix Ars Electronic competition in 2003.
This podcast features a very special live set by Bernhard Gal, i8u, and Yuko Nexus6. This was first broadcast live on Rare Frequency on WZBC 90.3FM on August 24, 2006.

This special edition podcast features a live set by Red Horse that was first broadcast on Thursday, April 17, 2006.
Red Horse is local musician Steve Pyne, who routes feedback loops and electronics through a custom-modified, vintage organ and homemade effects boxes to create uniquely wonderous sounds. A guitarist by training, but a mad inventor at heart, Steve played backup for Boyz II Men and jazz standards at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, before discovering the joys of cracked electronics at a show by Vic Rawlings -- he hasn't looked back since.
The podcast has been removed at the artist's request.

I take on the guise of DJ Top Hush for this relatively relaxed podcast, which is loosely based on a set I played out in April at an ambient night here in the Boston area called Furniture Music (sadly, now defunct). This is an unusually mellow podcast, so sit back, listen in and calm down just a tad. Full tracklisting below.

Comments? Do tell!
Nothing fancy with this early spring podcast: just an extended mix laced with abstract techno, feedback experiments, vintage ’70s electronics, and burbling drones. Features tracks by the following artists: Sleeparchive, Ø, CoH, alva.noto, Henrik Rylander, Laurie Spiegel, and Alexander Rishaug. Enjoy!
Rare Frequency Podcast 8: April Mix
Any questions? Ask. Any comments? Tell.
With lucky Podcast Number 7, we leave the abstract electronics on the shelf in favor of some our favorite heavy, Anatolian grooves from the sixties and seventies. The show contains songs by some of the best-known Turkish psych artists, such as Erkin Koray, Mogollar (pictured here), and 3-Hurel, as well as Edip Akbayram, Bulent Ortacsil, Mazhar & Fuat, Ozemir Erdogan & his Orchestra, and the wonderful protest singer, Selda. Rock on and fuzz out!
Rare Frequency Podcast 7: Turkish Psych
This very special podcast features an interview with a Rare Frequency favorite, Janek Schaefer. The interview was originally broadcast on 02.23.06 on the Rare Frequency radio program on WZBCand in it Janek and I discuss his latest release, Migration, as well as projects past, present, and future! Enjoy!
You can find a transcript of the interview here and my review of Migration here.

Why choose a picture of a Shriner playing a calliope from a 2005 July 4th parade as the visual corollary to RF podcast 5? Isn't it obvious? This edition of the show features selections by Kohn, COH, Pan Sonic, My Fun, Alog, Christian Wolfarth, and Bruce Haack.
Theme music: P.A. Dahan and M. Camison, "Super Carousel," The Music Library: Graphic Art and Sound (Fuel Publishing) 2005.

This second RF podcast, titled simply "Some Toys Never Lern," features music by Blutsiphon, Satanicpornocultshop, Christian Marclay & Gunter Müller, Felix Kubin, Douglas Lilburn, Don't Dolby 05, and Lasse Marhaug & Kevin Drumm. What happened to the first? You may never know... Oh wait, it's here.
Rare Frequency Podcast 2
Oddly enough, we think you'll find this "first" RF podcast sounds a tad better than the "second." How did we do it? Well, who says you never get a second chance to make a first impression....
Take a step back in time with "984 Precedent," which features electro-acoustic classics by Else Marie Pade, Marino Zuccheri, Pierre Henri, and Desmond Leslie (intro by Tod Dockstader; outro by Tom Dissevelt).
