23min of Ska: Recent Episodes
23 Minutes of Ska
So sometimes I do elaborate jokes that only I get. Maybe "joke" is the wrong word... anyway... So these 6 songs are part of a theme... kinda. The order is: COVID, Team Ups, Lounge, Ska by Non-Ska, 90's Covers, and TV Themes. I first did this on the episode "Road Map to Madness" where that order kicks in in reverse on the 3rd track, then we had the episodes "the Virus That didn't Leave" for a COVID ep, "the Greatest Team-Ups of All Time" a Team Ups ep, "the Millionaire's Holiday" for a loungy ep, "Search for the Open Gate" had ska songs by non-ska artists, "Back in the Day..." was chock full of '90s Covers, and "the Television Adaption" was all TV them covers! And to top it all off "Dig That Crazy Beat" was a reverse order to the "Road Map to Madness" episode... why did I do this? A joke? A challenge? Who knows. Why did I do it again here? Oh, this was for fun and to pay homage to the last time I went all Maverick.

"Try the girl" they mocked, but Foggy wasn't having it, besides, she knew that blackmailers don't shoot. She was looking for the finger-man that framed her. Sure, her necklace had broken at the crime scene, pearls are a nuisance, but she wasn't the killer in the rain. The blackmailers caught up to her when she was on her way to a pick up on Noon street, and threatened to turn her into the cops for messing in their business. She scoffed. She sized up her would-be captors, smirked and told them "Trouble is my business" and dashed off, knowing she had about 23 minutes to clear her name.

Last year I kept encountering more and more ska music that was rather, for lack of a better term, lounge-y. I've always been a fan of Martin Denny and exotica lounge stuff, as well as the more popular stuff by Nelson Riddle, and even more modern throwbacks like Tipsy and the Pizzicato Five. So I kept updating a playlist labeled "Lounge Type Ska" as 2020 rolled on, and when I had more than enough songs I tried my hand at getting them assembled into this episode. It's not a dancing episode, it's a relaxing episode, so sit down and raise a glass, you've earned it.

I've been reading Mike Allred comics pretty much since I got into comics, he's as classic to me as ska and ska/punk. He's a guy that makes me still love superhero comics, while bringing his indie idealism into the fold. Kinda like a lot of these bands. Kill Lincoln and Bite Me Bambi are taking that ska/punk sound and totally elevating it! And there's also great tracks from Shandon, King Kong 4, the Skajects, and Smoke Like a Fish rounding out this episode like Laura Allred's colors round out Mike's line work! And that Rude Boy George track? It can't be a tribute to the Allreds and "Madman" with out a bit of Bowie! (Also, that songs from the upcoming charity album "Block Buster : a Tribute to Glam Rock" Go pre-order it!)

One of my favorites was always Adam Warren's take on "the Dirty Pair" a sci-fi book that was ages ahead of the curve by decades in ideas, tech, and even the rise of horrible fan-types. It's about 2 young government workers who are sent to help citizens, but are a bit accident prone so wherever they show up hijinks ensue. Self assured women whose work entertains? About a year and a half ago I had some surgery which ended up putting me on some pretty heavy painkillers for a few days. During this time, going in and out of sleep I started reading Geoff Johns’ “Green Lantern” run. It would only be a few pages here and there in and out of my head, but it oddly helped and finally got me to be down with Hal Jordan. Hey, I was a teen in the ’90s, Kyle has always been my boy. So for the first time in a long time I was up so late perfecting this episode. I thought I'd had the music part done several times. One time I even saved it for publishing. Thing is, it didn't feel right, the next few drafts didn't feel right either. It took time, but "Hectic Planet" is one of my favorite and well missed comics of all time. Trying to capture what I like about the book using the music I dig most highly, and trying to promote a load of current ska bands, it is something that needs perfecting and perfection. If you've never read "Hectic Planet" you owe it to yourself to dig up the 3 collections out there and enjoy. And if the art looks familiar, it should, "Hectic Planet" artist and writer Evan Dorkin did a host of ska compilation covers throughout the '90s. He's a staple of the scene and a staple of my life.

So, uh, why comics for the theme of the 19th Session of 23min of Ska? Honestly, because I l dig them. Comics were my first pop culture love. Sure, television and movies were OK, but I never had strong allegiances to any show or franchise. But then I found comics... oh man, it was on! I was mostly a news stand kid before eventually finding my way to the specialty stores, one of which I ended up working at in my 20s. A few years later I got into ska, so they're both foundational blocks of who I am, so why not combine my love of each, for better or worse, over the next few months! …And we’re at the finale! Woo hoo! You’ve lived through the 2010s via ska music, once again! We’re closing it out with another load of fantastic tracks! Most of these are songs I was surprised to find that I hadn’t played earlier for all y’all!
So, let’s get real… I’ve done these “mix tapes” for the 1960s – 2010s now, I’ve done 18 sets of 23 episodes for a total of 414 episodes, and there’s a handful of episodes over at GeekNerdery that I’ve done (but I repeat songs on that one… so… it’s not “cannon?”) and I’ve tried various interview shows over the years (the most recent being “the Ska After Party” and if you’re up for it, I’m still doing that with co-host Matt Vest on “On the Upbeat”), so it begs the question… where do I go from here with 23min of Ska? Is there still gas left in the tank? I sure hope so! It’s been a minute since I set up a virtual 90min mix tape (split across 4 episodes) dedicated to a decade. One reason it’s been awhile is well… I ran out of decades… but hey, look, we’re in 2020, the 2010s are behind us! Let’s go! It’s my birthday early next week, so I thought I’d dig around in my records crate and pull out some tracks for an all vinyl episode of 23min of ska. Some of these tracks were later put out digitally, but I don’t have them. So yeah, there’s some clicks and pops and other random record sounds, this is mainly because I do only a small clean up of the music after the transfer. This is because I dig those little imperfections that come with vinyl and I don’t really want to remove that from the final product.

So in "Trucker Slang / CB Slang" the term "Starving the Bears" means to go the speed limit so that the cops won't pull you over and give you a ticket. And slowing down a bit seems like not too terrible of an idea right now. We're all in a rush to get back out into the world, but maybe we should take a minute to pause and see if that's the best idea. All but one of these tracks has been released since we've been in quarantine, hell, some were written and recorded directly because of it! I can't wait for this lockdown to end, but I don't mind waiting a bit longer if it means not feeding the bear.

Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists
Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors are an interesting project that tends to play punk-influenced folk and rock music, but has been known to pull influences from all over the map ranging from swing to ska, to country and beyond. They pulled yours truly into play trombone on this record and it's one of my favorite projects I've been a part of. Their new album, "Myths, Conspiracy Theories and Other Things I Made Up to Sound Interesting" dropped last week, and it even had a ska song on it, lamenting an all too familiar attitude in our political discourse.
The Autocratics - Brainwashed Friend
The Autocratics, from Tokyo, Japan, are what would happen if you took bands like Bad Manners, Madness, and the Specials further refined that nutty two tone sound to its apex. Fronted by Shuhei Yokota (Rude Bones), The Autocratics have been carrying the two tone torch in Japan for over a decade now and have developed quite a fanbase, and yet remain one of ska's best-kept secrets. So grab your Fred Perry, crack open an ice-cold Stella and enjoy The Autocratics!!! Brainwashed Friends is my favorite track off the band's debut album.
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is, for lack of a better description, perfect. My favorite band by about a mile and a half, having been together for over 30 years they've got a catalog deeper than the Marianas Trench. The band's trademark of blending ska with just about anything you can think of and making it their own is evident on this track, the leadoff/title track of 2009's "Perfect Future "
Karikatura - White Lies
The quick way to describe Karikatura is to say they play trans-global soul or world indie. A deeper inspection, however, yields a dizzying array of sounds ranging from jazz to cumbia to reggae to funk and of course the aforementioned soul. Crisscrossing the world for over 10 years, they dropped this aggressive meringue track, White Lies, as a response to the Eric Garner murder and Black Lives Matter movement. Diverse and eclectic music with (a) soul.
Warsaw Poland Brothers - Summer of Ska
Warsaw Poland Brothers are the unsung heroes of the socal/southwest ska scene. Having been active for over 30 years, and forming 2 sub-bands (California Celts, Kalifornia Krauts) they have managed to carve out a cult following from coast to coast. Great songwriting and excellent musicianship from the Poland brothers (Chris and Aaron). Summer of Ska is a single off the as of yet unreleased 8th album! The perfect track to get you ready for summer, even if we're all stuck indoors. Catch these guys if you ever get the chance and wish their singer Chris a happy 50th Birthday!
About Chris:
Chris Malone is a busy guy. Having been playing trombone in ska bands from all over the NYC/Long Island area for over 20 years, he is currently the bandleader/singer/trombonist in NYC based ska-punk band The Pandemics, he also occasionally plays with raggacore legends Pilfers. In addition to being an active musician, he also runs the fledgling record label, Lonely Atom Records, runs the Touring Ska Bands Facebook group (a resource for independent ska bands looking to book their own tours), and curates a Spotify playlist called The Best Ska Bands You've Never Heard Of that spotlights 5 criminally underrated ska bands from all over the world, hoping to shine a spotlight on all of the great ska bands making great music under most people's radars. I've known Chris for a few years now, he was even a guest on the late Ska After Party and we've kept up with each other via social media all this while. We've actually verified that we've been at shows at the same time, but that was well before we got in touch with each other. So this wraps up the Convoy series. It was a lot of fun these last 7 weeks, and it went so smoothly and brought so much good stuff to the show I'm fixing to find a way to do it all over again. If I'm lucky, I'll find another talented batch of folks to collaborate with!

Soul Ska was in our most recent box. They are a super soulful, rocksteady- heavy band from the Bay Area in California. "Propaganda" is a fierce, politically-charged dance tune. It's one of our favorite songs right now.
The Classy Wrecks- Northern Reggae
"Northern Reggae" is a smooth rocksteady jam from The Classy Wrecks out of Ontario. This is one of our favorite songs from The Classy Wrecks. We love the relaxed reggae, rocksteady vibe.
The Rough Customers- Bounce
The Rough Customers were also in our most recent box! Did someone say ska from Kentucky?! These guys are high-energy female-fronted ska-punk. We are big fans of their style. "Bounce" has fun, catchy lyrics and brings an awesome girl-power vibe.

These guys have the greatest energy. Super fun, skank-your-ass off ska-punk from Wisconsin! "Where's Ken?" is a fast-paced punk-laden song full of horns, and it makes us miss shows.
Flip The Switch- I'm So Over It
We're big fans of Flip The Switch! They are phenomenal live. They are a feel-good band, with a heavy punk rock/third-wave influence that makes us want to dance! "I'm So Over It" is our go-to song from these guys.

See, Jr Ska Boss is not just a DJ over at Viva Ska Radio, and he just doesn't DJ at shows between acts, no no no, he's also a full-on show promoter! I got a chance to meet him at a show he DJ'd a few months ago, and we got on great. I complimented his choices throughout the night and it was some fun conversation, then I was like "Oh, I do a ska podcast" and when I told him the show he seemed super stoked. With all of the craziness surrounding the global COVID-19 pandemic, I've found myself listening to a lot more ska. It's hard to put my finger on why, but I'd liken it to my favorite type of comfort food: not only is it good for the soul but it provides a bit of certainty in these uncertain times. Ska music has been a big part of my life for over the past 20 years. I even met my wife because of ska music. Being a teenager in Orange County, California in the mid 90’s you couldn’t escape ska music. However, when others stopped listening, ska music stayed in heavy rotation with me.
For this playlist, I followed a very simple plan to make it. I picked something old, something new and something local. Five Iron Frenzy, The O.C. Supertones and Less Than Jake are the bands I’ve been listening to the longest. Millington and The Skluttz are the newest bands on the list. Half Past Two, Hooray For Our Side and Codename:Rocky are some of my favorite hometown bands. I hope you enjoy my picks.
