God challenges the people of Zechariah's day (and us) to examine our hearts. He also encourages them (and us) to know that the day is coming when the hearts of God's people will be changed and He will once again bless Jerusalem.
Chapters 9 and 10 of Zechariah move beyond Zechariah's day and look to the future work of the Messiah - as a Shepherd and a King at his first and second appearings.
God's message to Zechariah when the Jewish people returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple - fear God and not man. The same message is for us today as we look ahead to all of the promises being fulfilled.
