MAKE SOUND HERE is a distributed sound project by James Saunders.
It presents a series of locations, submitted by anybody, at which sounds may be produced through various degrees of interaction. If you find yourself near one of the locations, try to find it and make the sounds yourself. If you find sounds to make, please contribute so that others can enjoy them too.
stand with feet far apart on a piece of broken concrete, shift your weight from foot to foot
Strike the end of each tube with the palm of your hand. Try to find those which make a clear pitch.
This is a lovely metal grid, set into a wooden panel near a bridge in Oxford. It has thick, hollow metal rails throughout, and is very loud when struck! We explored its sonic possibilities during a soundwalk organised for Audiograft 2013. Happily at the exact moment when we were sounding the grid, someone walked past with one of those noisy trailing suitcases, reminding me that this is also a fantastic way of making sounds wherever you are. #makesoundhere #suitcase #sticks #metal #railings #ding #clang
This is a really great place to 'play' as a large group, because it presents a long wall of nice, clanging railings which several players can simultaneously explore and sound. In this recording, three people trail wooden knitting needles along the surface of the railings, walking from one end to the other and crossing in the middle. #makesoundhere #railings #clang #sonorous
This is the sound of four people dropping knitting needles (one each) onto the pavement on a count of four in a very resonant area below a high concrete bridge beside a busy main road. The four people - Stavroula, Felicity, Colin and Gabriele - were exploring the potentials for sound-making in a small but aurally exciting district of Oxford as part of a soundwalk organised for Audiograft 2013. #makesoundhere #knittingneedles #traffic #pavement #synchronised #sonicity
This is the sound of some bollards at the end of Turn Again Lane, Oxford, being struck gently with wooden knitting needles by participants on a soundwalk led by Felicity Ford and Stavroula Kounadea as part of the Audiograft 2013 festival. The bollards each have a distinctive pitch and can be played by several players at once for a lovely musical effect. #makesoundhere #sticks #playing #metal #resonance #bollard

makesoundhere #foundsound #wind #litter Noticing the sounds of some litter being blown across a quiet street, we started experimenting with deliberately placing that found litter into the path of the wind. Each time there was a gust, the litter would struggle over the camber in the tarmac and then roll gently down to hit the kerb on the other side of the street. We threw the litter away when we had finished recording it.
We found an empty drinks can and noticed the lovely sound produced by the wind moving it across the tarmac. The street had a slight camber, and if the can was encouraged into the right position, it would slowly roll over this, and down towards the opposite kerb. #makesoundhere #litter #foundsound #wind
