Tracking White Supremacy

During the most recent episode of The Political Cesspool, white nationalist James Edwards interviewed former congressman Steve King. King lost to a primary challenger in 2020 after he defended terms like “white supremacist.” After his defeat, King solidified his ties to the white supremacist movement, and spoke at Nick Fuentes’ America First Political Action Conference.

On The Political Cesspool, Edwards and his co-host Keith Alexander celebrated the Fourth of July with King by discussing the possible break-up of the United States and celebrating the Confederacy.

Edwards stated that “confidence in the system is collapsing” and “both sides see each other as mortal enemies in an existential conflict like you saw before the War Between the States.” Calling secession an “all-American idea,” Edwards asked King if he saw a “realistic scenario” where states begin to secede in the next few decades.

King replied that “if we continue the way we are we won’t last 10 or 20 years as a unified nation.”

King also defended the Confederacy and people who displayed the Confederate flag. He recounted that his “great-great-grandfather” was “killed in the Civil War,” and that his “great-uncle” also fought in the Civil War.

“But here’s how I look at this,” King said. “My family were abolitionists. And just like I am pro-life today, these are the fundamental principle[s] of sacredness of human life and individual freedom. And so they went off to war, and my great-uncle came back. My great-grandfather didn’t come back.”

“But, in any case, here’s what I know: I went to Dixie Republic when the commercial came on, and I’m lookin’ at the Confederate battle flag right now,” he said, referencing a South Carolina-based store that sells pro-Confederate merchandise. “I had one flying on my desk when I was in Congress,” King bragged, claiming he did so out of “respect” for “Southern pride.”

King also repeated the lie that the Civil War was “more about states’ rights and Southern pride than it was about slavery.” Perhaps someone should have told Alexander Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederate States who declared in part that:

The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution — African slavery as it exists amongst us — the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.

Not only did King not appear to understand the chief cause of the Civil War, he also seemed unclear as to what side he would have fought for.

As King said, “And I still today [fly the Confederate flag]. And I’m gonna continue to do that, because there’s somethin’ to be said about the pride of the South and the dignity that’s there. And I respect it. And I don’t know where I would’ve been on this deal if I’d have been born 150 years earlier.”
