Vivian Leva is creating new songs and fresh approaches to old mountain classics. Her premiere album, Time Is Everything, features both, and we hear selections on this week’s Across the Blue Ridge episode.

This week we showcase the premiere album of a young singer and songwriter steeped in traditional Blue Ridge mountain music. Vivian Leva – who’s been on the show before with The Onlies – grew up in a musical family in Lexington, Virginia. Her parents, Carol Elizabeth Jones and James Leva, are both well known in the old-time and bluegrass communities as outstanding singers, creative songwriters and fine instrumentalists. Vivian Leva continues this family tradition on her premiere album, Time Is Everything, with a selection of powerful, thoughtful songs old and new. She creates something fresh from the sounds around her and the landscape of her own life and insights. As we mark Women’s History Month and take note of current events, we also hear songs of life, hardship and independence from Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Texas Gladden, Dale Ann Bradley, Ruby Vass, The Farwells and Ola Belle Reed. Instrumentals, a song from Max Heineman, and flatfoot dancing figure into the hour, too.

Uncle Dave Macon was an uproarious entertainer in the old minstrel show, Vaudeville and medicine show styles, and an early Grand Ole Opry star.
This week, in a rebroadcast of a popular show from May, 2016, we hear a broad selection of music from country music pioneers including Mac Wiseman, Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith, Hazel Dickens, Fred Cockerham, Paul David Smith and Uncle Dave Macon. We’ll sample a couple of songs from a rare field recording of Uncle Dave, one of the first stars of the Grand Ole Opry, made at his home in 1950. Plus… new generations continue the tradition, learning music from a wide range of sources and putting their own stamp on it. Jesse Milnes and Emily Miller sing their interpretation of a Hazel Dickens song, and The Buck Stops Here, an exciting foursome, perform a wonderful hybrid of old time and bluegrass music.

California fiddler, singer, songwriter and bluegrass bandleader Laurie Lewis is our featured musician this week. Her new album pays homage to bluegrass pioneers Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard.

California singer, songwriter, guitarist and fiddler Laurie Lewis was hooked on bluegrass fiddle when she heard recordings of the great fiddler Chubby Wise. The experience changed her from a sometime musician to a dedicated pro. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, she circulated with ease in the bluegrass world – a feat that would have been much harder in other, less liberated areas of the U.S. where the bluegrass community was most often a boys’ club. After Lewis encountered Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard, who blazed trails for many other female performers, she came to understand how unusual her own experience had been. She performed Hazel’s songs, produced a CD for Alice – and has now released an album of Hazel and Alice repertoire with her own band, The Right Hands. On this week’s Across the Blue Ridge, Laurie Lewis talks with host Paul Brown about the transitions in her musical life and about knowing Hazel and Alice. Wrapping up our Women’s History Month features, we hear lots of music from Lewis’ new album and from some of her major influences.
