Ever wonder why you can’t shake a mindset even though you know it’s probably not true? Well don’t you worry,  because we’re back with another episode in our series dissecting the connection between our minds and behaviour. Today we’re (literally) calling in the science buffs to explain to us how the brain is created to learn new pathways and patterns. Our friend and neuro-physiotherapist Naomi tells us about how she helps patients who have suffered strokes retrain their brains to rehabilitate their bodies, and how that same principle applies to our behaviour. Join us as we learn how we can retrain our brains!

We’re continuing our series on our minds and our behaviour, and this week this week dissecting two online articles. The first is about how AI (ChatGPT, to be more specific) is being used in place of traditional therapy, and the second is a Twitter thread where people are sharing advice from their own therapy sessions. But at what point does the search for accessible therapy make it impersonal and dangerously out of context? Join us in the conversation and let us know what you think!

Artificial intelligence has become way more accessible recently. But more than accessible, it’s also becoming personal. From Snapchat’s My AI, a friend that’s always there to “talk” with you, to ChatGPT’s ability to write anything from a song to a meal plan according to your specific requests, AI is easily about to become a part of our daily lives. But where is the line between technology being a tool and being a crutch? Does AI make life easier or make us lazy? Or worse…does it make us delusional? Join us as we use these these AI apps live on the pod to see for ourselves!

In our next episode in our series UPEND THE TRENDS, we’re coming in hot with a new topics that is trending and another that is not (but we think should be). First up is something we all love to hate - nepo babies! Over the past few months, this topic has taken the internet by storm and literally everyone has an opinion on the children of celebrities. We contrast this to shocking statistic that a person is reported missing in the UK every 90 seconds, yet no one ever talks about that. Why do we have so many opinions on people’s privilege when we find it uncomfortable to admit that we ourselves have privilege in comparison to someone else? Come and join us as we answer this and more, in this episode that you for sure won’t want to miss!

Today we’re keeping our UPEND THE TREND series going by dissecting two topics: one that is trending, and one that is not but we think should be. If you’re in the UK, you’ll be no stranger to the Gary Lineker vs the BBC drama. What started as a political opinion from the famous sportscaster snowballed into the country’s fixation with freedom of speech. Meanwhile, we dig up an under-the-radar news story about the poisoning of Iranian school girls in attempts to make them afraid of receiving an education. Join us as we discuss why we seem to only want to pay attention to the news if we find it entertaining and if we’re at risk of turning the news itself into nothing more than a gossip column. ..

The  recent death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has made a huge impact  on the UK. We’re coming at you this week with a very important episode. While filming on the streets of Oslo, we came across a protest which we naturally had to find out more about. But we weren’t prepared for what we were about to hear - there is an ethnic cleansing in Tigray,

the northern region of Ethiopia. Over 500,000 civilians have been killed. Borders are controlled by the military, there is no electricity, no internet, no humanitarian help allowed to enter. All of this devastation, yet the world and the media aren’t talking about it. It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives, forgetting that we’re all a part of something much bigger than ourselves - we are who we are today because of those who have gone before us and we will have an impact on those who come after us. If we’re being honest with ourselves, we’re rarely ever our “true  selves”. We put up facades and filters to adapt to different situations,  and in a way become a fake version of ourselves. Hey, we’re even told  to “fake it ‘til we make it”. But when have we “made it” enough to stop  being fake? Do we even know how to be our real selves? And does society  even want us to real? We count the cost of dropping our masks and being  vulnerable in today’s episode!  . .  . . . Just  a few years ago, it was all about hustle - the rise and grind, getting  that bread, you name it - there was always a saying that pushed us to  work harder. Fast forward a few years, and as the pandemic forced us to  slow our pace, a whole new mindset of rest and self care took over the  mainstream. But while neither of these concepts are inherently “bad”,  falling into their extremes can be dangerous. How? Great question. Join  us as we unpack it to identify why these concepts can quickly become  unhealthy and see if it’s possible to live in the balance. . .  . . . Remember when we said that last episode was our final week of our series  on control? Well, we lied. When we were presented with an opportunity  to interview a police officer from the United States to see his views on  control and society, we couldn’t pass it up. A contrast to last week’s  episode where we chatted with the London Metropolitan Police, we’re  joined by Officer John Barbee who has been a part of the US Law  Enforcement for 15 years (and is the Uncle of TAOTW’s own Sadie B ) as  he shares his perspective on being an officer in a country with a very  volatile relationship between the people and the police. Join us as we  attack some spicy topics (police brutality, defunding the police - you  name it) and challenge ourselves to see from someone else’s perspective.   . .  . . . Have  you ever wondered how much is your responsibility to keep your  neighbourhood a safe place?  For today’s episode we sit down with  officer Garry Dwyer who has been a part of the London Metropolitan  Police for 40 years and who has spent the last 12 years in the role of  Community Support Officer. He shares with us his unique perspective on  how as a society we have lost our sense of community responsibility to a  more individualistic mindset. Come and sit with us as we hear from  Garry’s years of experience and as we ask ourselves - what is my part to  play in my community?  . .  Resources to get in touch with the local police: Twitter:  @MPSCantelowes / email: cantelowes.snt@met.police.uk / mobile:   07407477772 . . What happens when you don’t trust the people who are supposed to keep  things under control? Just when you thought you’ve heard it all about  control, we’ve found a new, confronting rabbit hole to jump into. What  started as a preface for our next episode where we’ll be interviewing  the police (get ready for THAT), turned into a much broader question.  With so much distrust in our systems which are supposed to maintain  society and keep things from getting out of hand - be it police,  government, media, you name it - are things just getting more and more  “out of control”? Is that a good thing? Should we trust people in these  authoritative positions? As always, join us as we ask these questions  (and way more) in today’s episode!  .  . For  the average coffee drinker, your daily cup is nothing more than an  at-home brew in the morning or a stop at your local cafe to grab a  latte. But have you ever wondered what is happening “behind the bar”, so  to speak? There’s a whole, complex industry which most of us don’t  think twice about. Communism: a political and economic ideology with some very strong connotations. But as more and more people - especially young people - are getting fed up with the current western system of capitalism (aka the rich get richer and the poor get poorer), the idea of extreme equality through communism and socialism is starting to gain popularity. But today we’re here to ask…what’s even the difference between socialism and communism? Could it possibly be better than our current system? No question is to too basic as we dive into this beginners discussion - there’s no gatekeeping politics here! As well, we’re joined by Marek Rossi who spent his childhood in former Czechoslovakia as he gives us his first hand experience living under communist rule. We’re coming at you with a bonus episode from our World Wide Web series, and it’s a  conversation that needs to be had. With human trafficking being one of the biggest illegal trade business in the world (with a whopping 40.3 million people enslaved by it right now) it’s easy to keep this issue at arms length, thinking it only happens to to other people in far away places. But what if we told you that human trafficking can happen in your own home - to your kids, your siblings, your friends, or even yourself? With the rise of social media and how we are increasingly living our lives on the internet, the crime has found a whole new way to exploit people in the devices that we keep in our hands all day. Join us as we sit down with Kat Lewis of anti-human trafficking organization A21 UK and discuss the realities of slavery today, and how we all can be a key player in its end once and for all.

Every day, the majority of us wake up and go about our lives without giving much thought to what is considered “normal”. Chances are we have been born into a social system and have been following the mainstream (at least in part) ever since. And let’s be real, we usually judge people that are living outside of that “norm”, don’t we? In this new series, ON THE FRINGE, we are determined to challenge this mindset. Why do we conform so easily? Should we conform? Why do reject society’s structure? Are we just trying to be different than what’s expected of us? We (clearly) have so many questions, and we can’t wait to dive into them over the next several weeks. So join us as we start to think about this topic by asking some of the locals at Camden Market: What is missing from today’s society? We can’t wait for you to be a part the conversation!

We’re BACK from our holiday break, and gosh, we’re starting this year with a GREAT conversation that we can’t wait to share with you! Body image is a common struggle for all humans, regardless of what the struggle might look like from person to person. But we can all admit that, at least once while scrolling through our social media feeds, we’ve seen a post that’s caused us to think negatively about our own bodies. To dig deeper, The Anchor of the Week team took a road trip to Bristol and sat down with Dr. Jade Parnell, Research Psychologist at the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England to get her (extremely well-educated and experienced) take on social media’s roll in body image, body comparison and how we can handle it all in the healthiest way possible.

Misinformation is quite the the buzzword these days. We’ve talked about it in previous episodes, but our World Wide Web series wouldn’t be complete without diving into it deeper. In our age of social media activism and “woke-ness”, it seems like we’re all online policing what us true or not. But have you ever thought about if YOU’RE sharing misinformation without knowing? This leads us to wonder…if we are hellbent on differentiating fact and fiction, doesn’t that mean that we as a society need to agree there is absolute truth? And if so, who decides what it is? From political affiliation (we’re looking at you, Facebook) to manipulative algorithms to personal bias, the idea of truth gets clouded. So to gain some clarity, we took our social media to try to hear your thoughts and uncover the truth.

Thanks for joining us for another week of our series on the WORLD WIDE WEB! We’re peeling back the layers of the internet and technology to find out what really is happening online, how it affects us and what we can do about it.

But with all of our personal details floating around for anyone to find, how should we be smarter in protecting our identities? And is it this dangerous enough for us to become paranoid of whose hands are on our data? Join us as we sit down with our friend and tech aficionado Josiah Ackerman (whom you might recognise from last week’s panel) and pick his brain about this topic. Welcome to our new series on the WORLD WIDE WEB! We’re peeling back the layers of the internet and technology to find out what really is happening online, how it affects us and what we can do about it.   This week we’re kicking off with a widely debated topic: DOES SOCIAL MEDIA HARM YOUR MENTAL HEALTH? Chances are you’ve heard about the Facebook Files, aka leaked internal documents revealing that the company knows it creates societal harm. Facebook is receiving a lot of backlash over the fact that it knows its platforms are harmful for the mental health of young people. But how much of this is Facebook’s responsibility? How much responsibility do we take as users to contribute  to healthy online platforms? We discuss these questions, as well as interview a TikToker who says social media has actually helped his mental health, in today’s episode!

Welcome to the second week of our series on REJECTION! If last week was our overview on the topic, this week we’re digging deeper as we ask ourselves - why do we take rejection so personally? Are we supposed to? Are we not? Who and what are people actually rejecting? Even if we know that our worth is not in what people think of us, their rejection still stings. So how do we move on through the inevitable rejection of life without piling it all on our shoulders? It can seem like there is a lot of grey space when it comes to rejection and our emotions, and today we’re trying to make sense of it. We’re back on the streets to hear the voice of the people! We’re once again asking the question “what does freedom mean to you?”, and this time we’re at Trafalgar Square for the Worldwide Freedom Rally. Just like last week’s episode, it was a time where we got to hear perspectives from different people from different walks of life. It’s always our goal to step out and have conversations to hear points of we don’t necessarily agree with, and speak into these conversations with Truth. Let’s be a Church that embraces the uncomfortable to have meaningful conversations that make us think about what we believe. We hope that this episode challenges you to reach out and have these conversations in your own life!

On the day known as “Freedom Day” here in the UK due to lessening of some COVID restrictions, a demonstration took place at Parliament Square in London. And of course, as we’re still in our freedom series, we couldn’t pass up on this opportunity to hear from the people! We asked different people at the demonstration what freedom means to them, and we heard all different perspectives. Here at The Anchor of the Week, we believe in hearing other’s points of view even if we don’t necessarily agree with them, and speaking into these conversations with God’s Truth. Let’s be a Church that embraces the uncomfortable to have meaningful conversations that make us think about what we believe. We were challenged, and we hope you will be as well, by today’s episode!

As we continue our conversation on freedom, we take a moment to look at things from a slightly different perspective: are there limits to freedom? And should there be those potential limits? If freedom in its simplest form is having the ability to act without constraint, the idea of having boundaries attached to it seems like an oxymoron. But a limitless society is one that is set up for some uncontrollable chaos (shameless plug for our chaos series from a few weeks ago - give it a listen!). Join us today as we work through healthy and unhealthy limits to freedom and see if freedom really needs boundaries after all!

Now, as your English and Canadian hosts, we admit that we don’t know much at all about the American military. But Aaron gives us simple and profound insight on how he’s seen freedom fought for around the world and on how we may have a skewed concept of freedom in our western societies, all from his Christian perspective. Welcome to the first week of our brand new series, which is all about FREEDOM! Over the next few weeks we’re going to take a deep dive into both the concept and practicalities of freedom in all aspects of our lives. In today’s episode, we introduce the topic as we chat about why freedom is so important to us. We take a look at superficial freedom and the illusion of freedom and compare it to the freedom that as Christians we believe that Jesus gives us. From wanting freedom spiritually to breaking free from controlling external factors, we ask the question: why are we obsessed with freedom?

But today we’re peeling back yet another layer of the conversation and going one step deeper; what are the HIDDEN motivations of society? We all have agendas behind what we do, both good and bad, and often we don’t even question the agendas of the systems that we’re born into and merely adapt to the norm.
