Lead the Way 5miler for Leadership Harrison County — May 4, 2024
Start Derby Day with forty furlongs of your own! This timed footrace begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Club at 134 Jenkins Ct. NE in Corydon, IN. The course is an accurate five-mile route on Indian Creek Trail, crossing a historic truss bridge while following Indian Creek through Hayswood Nature Reserve and the town of Corydon. The course is “lollipop” style, with a two-mile out-and-back section plus a one-mile loop, including half a mile of gravel trail. The course is primarily flat with three moderate hills and two water stops. Participants are welcome to turn around early if they choose, with the understanding this will remove them from the competition portion of the event.

Graylin and Alex pop in for a special episode dedicated to an iconic Corydon business.
A steady stream of customers visited Corydon’s Butt Drugs during their last day of business on the morning of Saturday, April 29. People of all ages waited patiently to purchase merchandise, ice cream, and get a signature soda fountain beverage one last time.
It was a somber occasion as many looked through what little remained of the signature “I Love Butt Drugs” tshirts and merchandise. But there was also joy as many shared their favorite memories of visiting Butt Drugs.
“Butt Drugs is such a landmark. They were such nice people. I would regularly drink their coffee and buy their candy,” Diane Ryan of Lanesville said.
The staff was busy, making dozens of shakes and soda drinks, too busy to dwell on the closing as a non-stop line of customers flowed by the counter.
“I’ve learned in this community 30 years. When I first moved here, everyone told me Butt Drugs was one of the first places I need to go to,” Lisa Rathgeber from Ramsey said.
“I didn’t think about getting choked up but when I walked in, it suddenly became very said, Rathgeber said as her voice broke.
Owner Katie Butt Beckort spent the morning greeting and chatting with the visitors, reminiscing about the history of the business and the memories.
“This week has kind of felt like a wake, but in reality, it’s been a celebration of life. So many people this week have come to celebrate. Celebrate memories,” Beckort said.
What happens next with the building remains to be seen, but the loss to the town will be felt by many. Butt Drugs was a staple of downtown Corydon and very few businesses have had such an impact on the community’s residents.

Jim Hays is back with the first episode in an upcoming series: The Streets of Corydon. In this special episode, Jim focuses on the history of North Capitol Avenue, especially Cedar Glade, the oldest residence in Corydon, plus a few other of the historic homes.
Amanda Ramos and Adam Schneider are here to give an overview of the 2022 election. In addition to that, Amanda and Graylin discuss the recently released audit report for Harrison County and an update on the playground improvements from the Harrison County Parks Department.

Monday, June 6th, the commissioners moved to send a request of $95,000 onto the council. Parks superintendent Larry Shickles requested the $95,000 out of riverboat to fund the construction of six pickleball courts at Buffalo Trace Park.

We are so excited to be joined by Dan Canon in this episode. Canon is a civil rights lawyer, teacher, writer, speaker, consultant and activist. Canon is a professor of law at the University of Louisville and is best known as lead counsel for the Kentucky plaintiffs in the landmark Supreme Court case of Obergefell v. Hodges, the ruling which secured the right to marriage for same-sex couples. Canon also ran for congress in the 9th district in 2018 and his campaign was the first political volunteering Graylin ever did!

For this week’s news grab bag, we are joined by Noah Woods and Katie Forte to discuss a local, national, and international current events. In this episode we discuss the recent additional requests from Harrison County Animal Control and the council’s reluctance to fully fund its operation. Harrison County Animal Control provides essential services to this county and due to lack of funding they have been forced to close on Saturdays and are unable to keep employees. We feel that this department needs major support from the community. The council will soon begin constructing the 2022 county budget and Harrison County Animal Control MUST be made a priority. According to council member Jennie Capelle, the council is “not giving you the resources you need…we either need to shut it down and not have it, or fund it like it needs to be funded.”
