William studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where he obtained his BA and Honours degree in Drama and Film. He worked in television after completing his studies. Unable to resist the lure of media monitoring, William started with some part time monitoring for the Media Monitoring Project, now Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) in 1995 and after leaving television joined the MMA as a researcher.

In his twelve years as director of MMA William has helped MMA grow from a small 3 people driven organisation to a committed team of 16 people, with a clear vision and dedicated programme areas. William’s knowledge of media monitoring and commitment to deepening democracy in South Africa and the continent has ensured his expertise is internationally recognised.

After finishing his studies at the Superior Music Conservatory of Barcelona when onlu 18 years old (with the highest qualifications), he won a Spanish government scholarship to continue his studies in France with Jean-Yves Fourmeau and Nicolas Prost in Paris winning the Gold Medal in their conservatories. Since 2008 David Salleras teaches at the National Conservatoire of Girona (Spain) and is Head of the Department of Wind Instruments.

Shirley Apthorp, born in 1969 in Cape Town, moved with her family to Australia as a child. She studied music theory and violin at the University of Tasmania, and began to work as a music critic for the regional and national press at the age of 20.

In 1994 she received a Churchill Fellowship and an
 Australia Council Grant to study music journalism in
 Europe. She has lived in Berlin since 1996, writing about
 music fort he Financial Times (UK), Bloomberg (USA),
 The Australian, and for music magazines in the UK, the USA, Norway, Brazil, Japan, Australia, Austria and Germany. In 2010 she launched Umculo│Cape Festival , an organization with the aim of supporting social change through music in South Africa. She continues to work as a music journalist.

Siyabonga Maqungo – a young South African tenor (28) all the way from a township of Katlehong in Johannesburg Gauteng province. Siyabonga has been singing all of his life since at a very young age. In Season 2015/16 he started his first engagement as an ensemble member in Staatstheater Meiningen, where he sung the role of Alfred in “Die Fledermaus”; Electrica in Thomas Édes popular opera “Powder her face”; Arturo in “Lucia di Lammermor”; Italian singer in Richard Strauss’ last opera “Capriccio” and Der Sänger in “Der Rosenkavalier”. Siyabonga started his season 2016/17 with Rossini’s well known comic opera - “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” where he is singing the role of Count Almaviva. He then later sang the role of David in Richard Wagner’s Opera “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”. During summer 2017 he made his debut at the Opera Burg Gars Festival in Austria as Tamino in Mozart’s "Die Zauberflöte". Siyabonga debuted as Ferrando in "Cosi fan tutte" in season 2017/18 in Meiningen Staatstheater as he continues his roles of Mozart operas.

John Fleetwood is the director of Photo: a photography platform for curatorial and educational projects that relate to the African continent. He is the convener for democraSEE, an award and mentorship programme for Southern African photographers. Fleetwood was the Head of the Market Photo Workshop between 2002 and 2015. He works closely with the Centres of Learning for Photography in Africa and other institutions of learning and mentorship. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.

Karen-Michele Kimmett is a graduate of the University of Toronto, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and Ithaca College (Master of Music). She has taught at Seneca College, the Royal Conservatory of Music and at the music school ITE in Ithaca, NY. In 1985 she joined the faculty of the Institut Suzuki in Lyon, France, and from 1990-2001 co-founded and directed the Institut Musical Suzuki Paris in Paris, France. In 1986, Ms. Kimmett studied with Dr. Suzuki in Matsumoto, Japan. A teacher trainer for both the SAA and the ESA, Ms Kimmett has taught workshops in numerous European countries well as in Morocco, Canada, the United States, St. Barthélemey and South Africa where she has co-directed a long term teacher training program for the last sixteen years.

This Sunday Richard Cock interviews Professor Marissa Rollnick

Emeritus Professor Marissa Rollnick completed her BSc and teaching diploma at Wits University. She thereafter obtained her masters in chemical education at the University of East Anglia and her PhD in 1988 at Wits University.

She has taught at teachers’ colleges and universities in Swaziland for 15 years before returning to South Africa in 1990 to take up a position in the University. In 2005 she was appointed Chair of Science Education in the Marang Centre for Mathematics and Science Education at the School of Education. She held the positon of Director at the Centre from 2010 to 2016 before retiring.

She has graduated 16 doctoral and 27 masters’ students and has published 72 refereed articles, book chapters and books. Her book Identifying Potential for Equitable Access to Tertiary Level Science: Digging for Gold (2010) explores the issues of access focusing on the ways in which equal opportunities to learn have been implemented in tertiary education in Southern Africa, where models include the provision of access, foundation or ‘second chance’ programmes that have opened the door to vast numbers of new students.
