Advent Series 2022, Pt. 1: The word “Advent” means “coming” or “arrival.” While we tend to focus on the coming of the Son of God as a child at Christmas, Advent is traditionally a penitential season that is supposed to make us ready to meet the Lord at His second coming. This Advent series by Dr. David Hajduk, Array of Hope’s Director of Theology, reflects on the Final Advent of the Lord - the Last Judgment. This first part explores questions like “Why is there a general judgment at the end of time if there is a particular judgment at the moment of death?” and “What will be the signs that Jesus’ second coming is near?”

What Is the Role of a Bishop?: In this episode, we hear the story of Bishop Joseph Strickland, the Bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, host of the Bishop Strickland Show, and outspoken advocate of Catholic orthodoxy in a time of doctrinal confusion. We discuss the vocation and role of the Bishop to teach, to govern, and to sanctify, the importance of true devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, as well as Bishop Strickland’s efforts to have his diocese be a model teaching diocese.

--
About Bp. Joseph Strickland

Joseph Edward Strickland serves as the fourth Bishop of Tyler.

Upon the creation of the Diocese of Tyler in 1987, Father Strickland joined the presbyterate of the new diocese and was named the first vocation director in March of 1987 by Bishop Charles Herzig. He was assigned as parochial vicar of Sacred Heart Parish in Nacogdoches in June of 1989 and served there until October of that same year when he was assigned as pastor of St. Michael Parish in Mt. Pleasant. In August of 1992, he was assigned to study canon law at Catholic University of America.

After completing his licentiate (JCL) in canon law in May of 1994, Father Strickland was assigned by Bishop Edmond Carmody as pastor of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler. He was appointed judicial vicar for the diocese in 1995 and was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor by Pope John Paul II in 1996.

When Bishop Carmody was named Bishop of Corpus Christi in March of 2000, Mgr. Strickland was elected diocesan administrator for Tyler and served in that capacity until January of 2001 when Bishop Álvaro Corrada was installed as the third Bishop of Tyler.

In 2010, Msgr. Strickland was appointed vicar general of the diocese, and when Bishop Corrada was transferred to Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in 2011, Strickland was appointed delegate of the apostolic administrator for Tyler.

In September of 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named Msgr. Strickland as the fourth Bishop of Tyler. He was consecrated as bishop on November 28, 2012 by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston.

This past year we witnessed the passing of Alice von Hildebrand, Catholic philosopher and author, and wife of one of the foremost theologians and philosophers of the 20th century, Dietrich von Hildebrand. Array of Hope interviewed Alice in 2019, and in this podcast episode we share portions of that interview as a tribute to this amazing and influential Catholic woman. Alice discusses her concerns about the state of education, the breakdown of the family and the contemporary attacks on the family, and the crucial role that women play in the plan of God. She also shares her view that the key to building a culture of life, as well as strong marriages, is personal holiness.

--
About Alice von Hildebrand

Alice von Hildebrand was a Belgian-born American Catholic philosopher, theologian, author, and professor. She taught philosophy at Hunter College for 37 years and became an internationally beloved figure through her many books and articles and numerous radio and television appearances.

She is the widow of the famous Catholic philosopher, Dietrich von Hildebrand, whose work she developed and made her own, making important contributions especially to the Catholic understanding of marriage and of femininity.

Despite misogyny and anti-Catholicism at every turn, Alice von Hildebrand was a professor of philosophy for nearly 40 years in New York City. In a climate of relativism, she championed the objectivity of truth. Some students on the verge of despair found a reason for living; many, despite the fact that she never mentioned religion, converted to Catholicism.

Alice von Hildebrand passed into eternal life on January 14, 2022, leaving behind wisdom found in her many books including The Privilege of Being a Woman, Man and Woman: A Divine Invention, and her autobiography Memoirs of a Happy Failure.

Sister Miriam is known for her powerful witness and profound wisdom. She can be found speaking internationally at conferences and retreats, working with the John Paul II Healing Center, and co-hosting the popular podcast Abiding Together. Finally, we will look at how common religious phrases like "God loves you just the way you are'' and "God meets you where you're at" should be properly understood.

Can Faith and Science Be Friends?: In this episode, we hear from Catholic priest, apologist, and former President of Gonzaga University Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J. We learn about his own intellectual journey to find reasons to support the faith of his childhood, how God's grace guided that quest, how the Lord led him to the priesthood and the Jesuits, and about his passion to share solid scientific and philosophical evidence for the teachings of the Catholic Faith. Fr. Spitzer does this through his numerous books, online resources, and the Magis Center. We also discuss the false conceptions that underlie the popular idea that faith and science are at odds.

--
About Fr. Robert Spitzer

Fr. Spitzer was President of Gonzaga University from 1998 to 2009. While president, he significantly increased the programs and curricula in faith, ethics, service, and leadership, and led the efforts to build 20 new facilities, increased the student population by 75%, and raised more than $200 million for scholarships and capital projects.

He has made many TV appearances including: Larry King Live (debating Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow), the Today Show (debating on the topic of active euthanasia), The History Channel in “God and The Universe,” a multiple part PBS series “Closer to the Truth,” and the Hugh Hewitt Show.

Currently appearing weekly on EWTN in “Father Spitzer’s Universe“.

In this episode, we hear from Catholic convert, priest, author and blogger Fr. Dwight Longenecker. We hear about his journey from an Evangelical Protestant to Anglican priest to the Catholic Church and Catholic priesthood. We learn about Fr. Longenecker's love for literature and for writing, and in particular his books commenting on our current secular age riddled with atheism and materialism. We also hear about how St. John Paul II understood the false ideas that underlie our current cultural crisis and how he sought to correct them.

--
About Fr. Dwight Longenecker
"I was brought up in an Evangelical home in Pennsylvania. After graduating from the fundamentalist Bob Jones University with a degree in Speech and English, I went to study theology at Oxford University. Eventually I was ordained as an Anglican priest and served as a curate, a school chaplain in Cambridge and a country parson on the Isle of Wight."

"Realizing that the Anglican Church and I were on divergent paths, in 1995 I and my family were received into the Catholic Church. For ten years we continued to live in England where I worked as a freelance writer and charity worker. Then in 2006 the door opened to return to the USA and be ordained as a Catholic priest."

"I now serve as Pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Greenville, South Carolina."
