This week, our Deputy Director Jaime Miracle sat down with Jasmine Henderson, Director of Policy & Social Impact with the Ohio Women's Alliance, and Rev. Terry Williams, Faith Organizer for the Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

The trio discussed terrible legislation pending in the Ohio Statehouse to punish people for expressing their first amendment rights through protest. This legislation is nothing more than a transparent attempt to stifle Ohioans’ voices and make it harder for Ohioans to organize protests that Republicans don’t agree with.

On this week's episode, Kelley, Ariana, and Rhyannon discuss the history of abortion, from the 1920s until present day.

A new study from OPEN has found that one in 10 Ohio women surveyed thought abortion was prohibited because of confusion during the debate over abortion ban bills. The percentage with that belief increased from 5% to 16% during the study period, corresponding to sustained activity to limit abortions from fall of 2018 through summer of 2019.

On this weeks episode, we're listening in to a hearing of the Ohio Senate Health Committee. They held a 10 hour meeting on Wednesday (don't worry, our show is only 29 minutes!) that was mostly testimony on SCR 14, which would declare racism to be a public health crisis in Ohio.

Our excerpted audio from the hearing includes resolution sponsors Sen. Sandra Williams and Sen. Hearcel Craig. They receive questions from Sen. Nickie Antonio, Sen. Tina Maharath, and Sen. Cecile Thomas. We also have audio from Franklin County Commissioner Kevin Boyce, Columbus City Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson, and former state senator Charleta Tavares.

This hearing was not without additional controversy. Mid-way through the hearing, Sen. Steve Huffman referred to “the colored population” and questioned whether they get COVID-19 more often because they do not wash their hands as much. After this racist question was spread on social media, Sen. Huffman was fired from his day job — a physician at a Dayton-area hospital.

On this weeks episode, our Executive Director Kellie Copeland addressed the current protests happening across the nation and our support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Then, we turn back to the legislature to hear from three members of the Ohio House of Representative and a policy proposal that could be a significant positive gain for pregnant people in Ohio.

Rep. Paula Hicks-Hudson and Rep. Erica Crawley have introduced House Bill 611, which would provide Medicaid coverage for birthing doulas. Doula care is one way to ensure positive birthing outcomes, which is a key step in reducing the state's infant mortality crisis. Ohio's Black infant mortality rate is among the worst in the nation. Discussing the proposal with them is Rep. Kristin Boggs, who also values this proposal to help Black families.

Independent abortion clinics have always provided essential health care when and where patients need it, serving three out of every five patients in the U.S. each year who have an abortion. During this rapidly growing pandemic the need for access to our clinics is increasing on a daily basis.

This week, Gabe and Jaime traveled to the US Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati. The Down syndrome abortion ban signed into law by former Gov. John Kasich was immediately blocked by federal courts. The appeal by Gov. Mike DeWine's Department of Health challenging the stoppage called for an en banc review, which means the case was heard by all SIXTEEN judges of the appeals court at one time, instead of the usual three judge panel.

The state's argument was presented by attorney Ben Flowers and joined by an addition from the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division attorney, Alexander Maugeri.

The plaintiff, Preterm, was represented by attorney and Case professor, Jessie Hill.

The state of Ohio is arguing many positions, first being that this abortion ban somehow isn't an abortion ban. They feel that it applies to doctors and not women, so the women aren't impacted. (We note that the entire trial, and our discussion of it, was entirely using gendered language. This isn't a principal shared by NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, but it's not our court.)

A second position of the state, and several male judges on the court, is that women won't be impacted by this ban because they can just dodge it by not informing their doctor why they are seeking an abortion. Prof. Hill pointed out that asking patients to hide information from doctors is not sound health care policy.

Full hearing audio is available at: https://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/internet/court_audio/aud1.php (Look for March 11, 2020 - 18-3329 Preterm-Cleveland v Amy Acton et al.)

This week, we wanted to lift up just a few of the amazing speeches from the rally outside the US Supreme Court during oral arguments in June v. Russo. That case out of Louisiana is identical to the 2016 case Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, which struck down a series of Texas politically motivated abortion restrictions.

With all of the anti-science bills in the Ohio Statehouse, we thought Jaime, Gabe, and Kelley should review.

This week, Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Jessie Balmert obtained emails from Equity Forward revealing the origin of the false idea legislators have about transplanting an ectopic pregnancy:

"Clermont County Rep. John Becker, R-Union Township, didn't consult doctors about the medical procedure. Instead, he received regular input from Barry Sheets, a lobbyist for the Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio, according to emails obtained through an Enquirer public records request. ...

"Sheets offered line-item changes to Becker's House Bill 182, which would ban most private insurance coverage of abortions in Ohio. And the lobbyist helped Becker defend one of the bill's more controversial ideas: permitting health insurance to cover reinserting a fertilized egg that attaches outside the uterus – called an ectopic or tubal pregnancy – into the uterus."

We all know this idea they're proposing — now in two separate House bills — is science fiction.

Following a pair of hearings and two floor votes this week, Kelley and Gabe are joined by Rev. Terry Williams from the Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

The Ohio Senate Committee on Health, Human Services, and Medicaid approved Senate Bill 155 and Senate Bill 208 on Tuesday, and there were floor votes in Ohio Senate session on Wednesday. The bills push harmful false narratives about abortion, and each would charge physicians with third degree felonies for not complying with medically unnecessary rules.

In the Ohio House Committee on Ways and Means, House Bill 297 received its second hearing. This bill would create a tax CREDIT to give money from taxpayers to donors of fake women's health centers (AKA crisis pregnancy centers or CPCs).

In Dayton, Kelley is continuing to organize supporters of Women's Med Center. That clinic took their fight from state court to the federal level.

This week, Gabe and Jaime review the hearing on Senate Bill 155, with testimony being offered by NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio and many of our partners.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio strongly opposes Senate Bill 155. This bill requires medical professionals to give at best medically unproven information and at worst, information that could harm their patients. Abortion “reversal” has not been scientifically researched and its potential side effects and risks have not been determined. Politicians should never mandate that health care providers give their patients inaccurate information about an unproven treatment.

  • Jaime Miracle, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio
  • Sarah Inskeep, Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity

They discussed a provision in the state budget that uses taxpayer funding to operate fake women’s health centers.

That’s right, your tax dollars are funding deceptive, anti-choice health clinics, sometimes known as "Crisis Pregnancy Centers."

These groups are infamous for giving misleading and medically-inaccurate information to pregnant patients seeking care.

After recording the podcast, the trio hopped in a packed car to rush down to Cincinnati to rally in support of Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio. The PPSWO affiliate is having to close two health care centers (not abortion clinics) this month because of the Trump gag rule on Title X providers.

This week, Kelley, Jaime, and Gabe put a wrap on the 2019 Ohio state operating budget. We were disgusted to see that Gov. DeWine did not use a line item veto to remove the $7,500,000 allocation for fake women's health centers.

Ohio House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes addressed the funds: https://youtu.be/K5oOg0NG5oI

In separate crisis pregnancy center news, Rep. Jena Powell and Rep. Tim Ginter are proposing a 50% refundable tax credit for donations to fake women's health centers.

Butler County Democrats objected to Rep. Candice Keller supporting the #KellerKickback bill, and she has since announced she will abstain because of her conflict of interest.

In other news, Kelley has been leading a great campaign to call on Premier Health to sign a transfer agreement with Women's Med Center. Send an email to Premier Health to join to campaign! https://act1.myngp.com/Forms/-1208935024972267520

This week… oh, what have we done? We handed the podcast over to Kelley, who interviewed two of our most… boisterous… supporters. She is joined by Michelle Love-Davis, who co-founded Feminist Flag Corps and currently reps WomenHaveOptions.org; and Jordyn Close, who came from WeTestify.org and now organizes for URGE: Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity.

These are three fun women who aren’t afraid to get loud in support of abortion rights, even if it means getting in the face of anti-abortion protesters at events and at clinics all across the country.

Note from Gabe: Yes, Michelle, they did bring the Duggars — all of them — to the Ohio Statehouse to promote the “Heartbeat Bill” in 2013. I was in the room. OhioCapitalBlog has the video on his YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/qbk7RVjyxfU

This week, Gabe talked to one his first friends in the reproductive rights movement: Pamela Merritt. Along with Erin Matson, Pamela is a co-founder at ReproAction — a national organization working to increase access to abortion and advance reproductive justice.

Pamela is based out of Missouri, which has just one remaining abortion clinic: Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region. The governor has been trying to close that clinic by refusing to renew their license. While Planned Parenthood's legal team is fighting to keep the clinic open, ReproAction is busy lifting up the voices of people in that state who desperately need abortion care.

NARAL's The Morning After is a production of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio.

This week, Jaime, Kelley, and Gabe discuss the first hearing on Senate Bill 23, the latest version of the six-week abortion ban. This may be the initial hearing, but it's the fifth session of the Ohio General Assembly that this horrific ban has been introduced, a history reaching back to 2011.

Sen. Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) provided sponsor testimony on the bill, which included some new ideas we've never heard before. She shared a story of a friend who put a child up for adoption, and compared pregnancies to bald eagle eggs. Seriously. The important point is that no matter what unusual experience or comparison someone has, that isn't a good enough reason to ban abortion access for everyone else.

In committee, we heard terrific questions from Sen. Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood) and Sen. Tina Maharath (D-Columbus).

Next, they're continuing to raise attention to the lies told by so-called "Crisis Pregnancy Centers" — those fake women's health centers that take public tax dollars and mislead women seeking answers during a pregnancy. Marty provides an amazing collection of advice on how to be involved both as an activist and how patients can obtain abortion access in the face of legal attacks. This week, Kelley, Hannah, and Gabe discuss the rally, hearings, and — SURPRISE! — lack of vote from the Ohio Senate committee hearing the bill. Without that vote today, the bill sponsors will likely be unable to pass the bill AND override a governor's veto before the end of the year.

Opposing the bill, our Kellie Copeland has an op-ed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer: https://www.cleveland.com/opinion/2018/12/ohio-lawmakers-need-to-consider-the-serious-implications-of-their-heartbeat-bill-vote-for-ohio-women-and-reproductive-freedoms-kellie-l-copeland-opinion.html

"Once a woman has made the decision to end a pregnancy, she needs access to safe, legal abortion care in her community. Period. Bodily autonomy is a human right and has a powerful impact on women’s health, educational attainment, career trajectory, and ability to obtain and preserve economic security."

Yesterday, 31 people testified before the committee, including Kelley, Hannah, and our own Jaime Miracle. Committee video available on OhioChannel.org.

While this bill may be dead, other restrictions could still be passed next week. Email your Ohio senators and representatives to oppose ALL abortion bans and restrictions: https://act1.myngp.com/Forms/-6686156596784922624

This week, we're playing audio from floor speeches during today's House debate over a six-week abortion ban. This episode includes speeches from Rep. Nickie Antonio, Rep. Kristin Boggs, Rep. Michele Lepore-Hagan, Rep. Stephanie Howse, Rep. Brigid Kelly, and Rep. Catherine Ingram.

The Ohio House passed a six-week abortion ban by a vote of 58-35.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “Anti-abortion ideologues should not attempt to insert politics between a patient and their physician. What we’re seeing is state legislators, John Kasich, and Mike DeWine playing politics with women’s lives. This abortion ban would block patients from the care they need and deserve. If enacted, this legislation would worsen the reproductive health care crisis in our state. The decision to have an abortion is not a political decision.”

This week, Kelley, Jaime, and Gabe discuss the appeal filed by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine challenging the ruling from the Sixth-Circuit Court of Appeals. The court recently blocked John Kasich's 2016 plan to defund Planned Parenthood.

While DeWine is attacking women's health providers, Rich Cordray is listening to non-profit initiatives working to reduce infant mortality by offering pre- and postnatal support. ROOTT and Moms2B were two specific groups included in a community roundtable at the Franklin County Public Health headquarters. After that event, Cordray said extra resources are needed to address the problem and can only come from Medicaid expansion. Read Dispatch coverage.

Immigration continues to dominate the headlines, but "pro-life" groups refuse to help separated families.

This week, Kelley, Gabe, and Vashitta discuss last night's debate of Ohio's Democratic candidates for governor. Richard Cordray, Dennis Kucinich, Bill O'Neill, and Joe Schiavoni met in Toledo to explain why they should be the nominee.

Before the debate, Bill O'Neill made headlines when he contacted supporters to clarify his anti-abortion views. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland issued this response soon after:

Once a woman has made the decision to end a pregnancy, she needs access to safe and legal abortion care in her community. Any candidate for governor, regardless of political affiliation, who doesn’t respect her decision is unfit to lead the state of Ohio.

During the debate Richard Cordray expressed support for women's health care and reproductive rights. Joe Schiavoni did as well, being the only candidate on stage to say the word "abortion" as he stated his pro-choice position. Dennis Kucinich did not mention reproductive rights.

Vashitta joined Senators Charleta Tavares, Sandra Williams, and Cecil Thomas as they called for protections against sexual harassment in and around the Ohio Statehouse. OhioChannel.org has full event video.

This week, Kellie, Elaina, and Gabe discuss our new partnership with the Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio:

“Too often, religion is used to shame and stigmatize people who have had an abortion or use contraceptives. That is why the work of the Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice is so important—Ohioans need to know that people of faith trust them to make their own reproductive health decisions.”

Elaina Ramsey, ORCRC’s new executive director:

“It’s an honor to partner with the NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio team in bringing the moral power of

religious communities to the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement. A dedicated community organizer and campaign strategist, Ramsey is the first woman of color to lead ORCRC. She is committed to communities of color, low-income women, and immigrants.”

Copeland, a longtime advocate of reproductive freedom, has path forward for reproductive rights in Ohio without engaging more people of faith.

Both organizations remain independent but have begun to share office space, resources, and strategies. Through innovation and collaboration, the groups seek to equip secular and faith communities in securing reproductive healthcare for every Ohioan—including access to birth control, comprehensive sexuality education, and safe, legal abortion.

Together, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio and ORCRC will protect the moral and constitutional rights of all Ohioans to make their own reproductive health decisions without shame and stigma and without interference from the state.

This week, Kelley, Elaina, and Gabe discussed the US Senate vote to defeat Skinny Repeal that would destroy Americans’ access to affordable health care and block Planned Parenthood from Medicaid funding. Also, they talk about this week’s federal court hearing to challenge John Kasich’s latest plan to defund Planned Parenthood at the state level.

Elaina spoke up against Ohio Right to Life’s latest announcement that they really, really, don’t support rape survivors. She has a letter in the Columbus Dispatch:

“As a rape survivor and a committed Christian, I’m deeply disturbed by Ohio Right to Life’s decision to only endorse candidates that “hold a ‘pro-life’ position with no exceptions to abortion stemming from rape or incest (Dispatch article, last Friday).”

“No woman should be forced to carry a pregnancy against her will, no matter the circumstance. As the executive director of the Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, I faithfully advocate for compassionate reproductive care for all — including full access to contraceptives, adoption, abortion, and foster care. Anything less violates the lived experiences and moral agency of Ohio women, particularly survivors of rape and incest.

Given that 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence, Ohio Right to Life’s hard-line agenda perpetuates a rape culture. Rape survivors should not be punished and traumatized further to carry a pregnancy to term without their full consent.

Whether or not to become a parent is a sacred decision and should remain personal and private. While Ohio Right to Life claims to be nonsectarian, it has a long history of using toxic Christian rhetoric to restrict women’s reproductive health-care access.

The actions of Ohio Right to Life do not represent my faith, that of other religious traditions, nor the will of most women across our state.”

~ Elaina Ramsey

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland issued a statement:

“This new low standard in the Ohio Right to Life endorsement criteria further solidifies their alignment with extremists like President Donald Trump who believe that women who have abortions should be punished. These values are not Ohio values.

Women deserve access to safe, legal abortion care in their communities without judgment or political interference—regardless of the reason she is unable to continue a pregnancy. Here at NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, we trust women to make their own reproductive health decisions, and we will continue to back candidates that do as well.”

Also in the Dispatch, the newspaper issued their third editorial criticizing Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharen Kennedy for participating in an anti-abortion event before hearing a case about Toledo’s last abortion clinic:

“The high court should modernize its process for handling complaints against one of its own. This is disappointing given that this court has been open with the public. This falls short of its own standard.”

This week, Jaime, Vashitta, and Gabe recorded our first episode for the radio! We’re proud to announce that NARAL’s The Morning After will air in Columbus on WGRN – 94.1FM on Friday mornings at 9 a.m.

This morning, we got our first look at the Senate plan to repeal Obamacare. The bill is a shocking plan to repeal Medicaid and provide a massive tax cut to the nation’s super-wealthy.

NARAL Pro-Choice America released this statement:

“The Republican proposal is a direct attack on the health and well-being of hundreds of millions of Americans and a savage attack on women’s healthcare in particular. It is just as cruel as the proposal approved by the House. By defunding women’s health centers, denying abortion coverage to Americans who get their insurance through the exchanges or who receive tax subsidies, and slashing healthcare for the families who need it most, it’s clear that the Trump administration and the GOP’s concern with being ‘pro-life’ only reaches as far as the nearest tax cut for millionaires.”

In Ohio news, the state operating budget passed the Ohio Senate yesterday. The bill is also seen as an attack on the health and welfare of low-income citizens. The budget bill includes $600,000 for crisis pregnancy centers.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said:

“Especially in our current economic climate, the state should be using its limited tax dollars to fund programs that have a proven track record for effectiveness. By giving funding to so-called ‘crisis pregnancy centers,’ the Parenting and Pregnancy Program is directing money to centers that coerce and mislead the people turning to them for help. When women need urgent, legitimate medical advice, these facilities present inflammatory rhetoric and misleading information. These centers should not be getting state funding.”

This week, Jaime, Vashitta, and Gabe discuss the new CBO estimate on the AHCA. Approximately 23 million Americans would lose health insurance under Paul Ryan’s plan.

In Ohio, we’re continuing to put pressure on Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharen Kennedy to recuse herself in the Capital Care case. This week, the Columbus Dispatch weighed in:

“Justice Maureen O’Connor, however, has publicly stated that Kennedy’s speech was appropriate, noting she had not mentioned abortion or any pending case. And Kennedy, in a statement, noted she had appeared before numerous civic organizations to give a similar speech about “the founding of this republic, the Constitution and the separation of powers.” But it’s disingenuous to compare a speech to Right to Life — on any topic —with a public address at, say, the Rotary Club or a chamber of commerce. Kennedy should step aside.”

Yesterday, the Ohio House Committee on Health held a fourth hearing on HB 149, which stigmatizes abortion providers and bans fetal tissue research that’s already not happening in Ohio. The committee removed an awful requirement that physicians providing abortions be labeled as “abortionists” in state law. The remaining bill is still deeply flawed and doesn’t bring any benefit to any Ohioan.

In good news, Rep. Stephanie Howse and Rep. Michelle Lepore-Hagan introduced HB 234, which creates provisions to protect women and doctors at abortion clinics across the state.

This week, Jaime, Vashitta, and Gabe discuss whether Donald Trump will survive his own mess of political scandals, and which Republicans might challenge him in the 2020 GOP Primary.

Jaime testified before the Ohio House Committee on Health against House Bill 149. The bill makes research on fetal tissue double-illegal and tries to label doctors as “abortionists” in state law. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio objects to the bill adding unnecessary restrictions on abortion providers, as well as placing an inflammatory slur into the Ohio Revised Code.

The Down Syndrome Abortion Ban was reintroduced. This unconstitutional proposal blocks women from terminating a pregnancy following a positive prenatal diagnosis for the disorder. After this idea was first introduced two years ago, it was opposed by families currently raising children with Down Syndrome who don’t want options removed from women facing the same decision. Read David Perry’s column on CNN.com for more.

This week, Jaime and Gabe are joined by our newest staff member, Vashitta Johnson! Vashitta is our Field and Political Director, a new position that NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is adding to increase our capacity for political and electoral work across the state.

We start with the news that our Field Organizer Randi Gregory has left us. Randi has accepted a position with SPARK, an excellent reproductive justice organization doing work in the South. While we're very sad to lose our outstanding field organizer, we know she's making a great step forward in her career as their new Director of Programs!

This Wednesday was the Roe Together Statehouse Advocacy Day, and it was terrific. We heard from Rep. Stephanie Howse and Rep. Brigid Kelly in our morning session. Later, we rallied on the Statehouse steps to hear from House Minority Leader Fred Strahorn, Sen. Joe Schiavoni, Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko, and Sen. Sean O'Brien. We were also joined at the rally by Sen. Cecil Thomas, and Rep. Kristin Boggs.

Increased public pressure will attempt to delay that vote further. Join NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio in Cleveland on Saturday to speak out against the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

We also reviewed a horrible op-ed in the New York Times that expressed the view that Democrats should abandon abortion rights as an issue.

This week, Gabe and Kellie discuss the hearings for Judge Neil Gorsuch, which concluded this week. Judge Gorsuch made comments respecting Roe during his questioning, but it's his actual record that worries us. He voted to strip women of access to contraception coverage in the Hobby Lobby case, and women everywhere are taking note.

In fact, because of the threat to the contraception coverage guarantees, the women at Lady Parts Justice have released their newest video, I'm Just a Pill! Gabe spoke to Julie Rosing and Abby Holland from the LPJ team.

This week, Gabe, Jaime and Randi discuss Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy, who participated in a fundraiser for Right to Life of Greater Toledo this morning. This creates a conflict of interest with upcoming cases.

Two cases involving abortion providers will come before the state Supreme Court this year. Toledo’s last abortion clinic, Capital Care Network of Toledo, is challenging the state’s transfer agreement requirements. Separately, Cleveland abortion clinic Preterm is challenging abortion restrictions added into the 2013 state budget as violations of Ohio’s single-subject requirement for legislation.

In a release, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said:

Justice Sharon Kennedy should recuse herself from any case related to legislation that was proposed and supported by the anti-abortion groups that endorsed her candidacy, to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

By participating in an organization’s fundraising event, Justice Kennedy has cast serious doubt on her ability remain impartial. Ohioans must be able to have faith in their government’s protection of rights without bias.

Specifically, he’s a key voice in opposition to the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the US Supreme Court. Immediately following Gorsuch’s nomination, Sen. Brown issued a statement listing ways he is an inappropriate choice for the high court:

The people of Ohio deserve Supreme Court Justices who will defend the rights of working families over Wall Street and corporate special interests – and Judge Gorsuch’s record doesn’t pass that test. I cannot support any nominee who does not recognize that corporations are not people. The Supreme Court has enormous influence over the lives of everyday Ohioans, and any nominee must be willing to defend their rights to make their own healthcare decisions, collectively bargain for safe workplaces and fair pay, and to be protected from discrimination and Wall Street greed.

Why write a bill that essentially repeats existing Ohio law? Great question, and our guests today help explore the answer.

Week 1: Damage Report

Description:

This week, Gabe, Jaime, and Randi look at the first week of the… well… current presidential administration. We can’t quite bring ourselves to say it.

Across the globe, millions of women, men, and families marched across the globe in support of abortion rights and against the many policies could impact women during the current administration. In Ohio, marches were held in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chillicothe, and Dayton.

We’re already seeing anti-choice policies moving forward, with state and federal versions of the six-week abortion ban in the works. Worse yet, the Global Gag Rule has returned, and it’s worse than before.

This week, Gabe was joined by Claressa and Michelle from Feminist Flag Corps! Find them on Twitter and Facebook. You can also read more about them on Columbus Underground.

Over the past year, they’ve worked to raise funds to pay for women’s abortion by creating a unique design for flags. Taking inspiration from the Gadsdsen Flag that many conservatives have co-opted, Claressa combined a snake and uterus to send a clear message: Don’t Tread On Me. Proceeds from sales of the flags go to Women Have Options — Ohio, one of Ohio’s most active abortion funds.

In addition to the flag project, they have been active outside Columbus abortion clinics working as escorts and monitoring protesters. They were in attendance at the Columbus March for Women last Saturday, and will be attending the national march in Washington DC this weekend.

This week, Kellie, Jaime, and Gabe discuss a potential 20-week abortion ban being voted on during the end of the 2016 legislative calendar. Email your Ohio state legislators to halt this abortion ban.

In September, Ohio Right to Life indicated to the Cleveland Plain Dealer that they intended to try to pass Senate Bill 127, which bans abortion at 20 weeks. There were 20,976 abortions performed in Ohio in 2015, but only 2% of all abortions reported were at 20 weeks are later. Anecdotal evidence shows that most of these procedures are performed after women receive diagnoses of medical complications, either threatening their own health or their pregnancy. Bans on abortions after 20-weeks punish women who wanted to have healthy pregnancies. Because 20-week bans block abortion before a point of viability, they are unconstitutional according to guidelines established in Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

As Secretary Clinton works to become the first woman to win the presidency, the Cincinnati Enquirer to an unprecedented step in reaffirming their endorsement of her.

The Enquirer also ran an op-ed from state Rep. John Becker, a conservative who embodies the Trump campaign on every issue. He pushed Trump’s lies about abortion:

Trump is the candidate who is supporting pro-life issues, supports the Second Amendment, wants to lower taxes, and control spending. Clinton supports partial birth abortion (baby killing until the moment before the child is completely out of the birth canal) and paid for by the taxpayers.

To counteract these ridiculous claims and the legislation they inspire, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio has issued endorsements for the Ohio House and Senate:

This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss this week’s vice presidential debate. Tim Kaine made many excellent points, including some terrific answers on abortion.

We support Roe v. Wade. We support the constitutional right of American women to consult their own conscience, their own supportive partner, their own minister, but then make their own decision about pregnancy. That’s something we trust American women to do that.

Mike Pence gets the Walk of Shame for denying many statements both he and Donald Trump has made, including this jem:

Donald Trump and I would never support legislation that punished women who made the heartbreaking choice to end a pregnancy.

In the Cleveland Plain Dealer, former state Rep. Ed Jerse complained about how difficult it is to be a “pro-life” Democrat. After a lengthy discussion of the hardship of politicians, he reluctantly admits that education and contraception might be benefits of a Clinton/Kaine administration. We asked why education and contraception are the very solutions that the pro-life movement repeatedly ignore.

Secretary Clinton got a boost this week, as she was endorsed by LeBron James.

I also tell all my kids how important it is that they give back to the community. Because if basketball has taught me anything, it’s that no one achieves greatness alone. And it takes everyone working together to create real change.

When I look at this year’s presidential race, it’s clear which candidate believes the same thing. Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty. And when I think about the kinds of policies and ideas the kids in my foundation need from our government, the choice is clear.

That candidate is Hillary Clinton.

I think Donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And yes, I did. And you know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be president.

Description:

This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss yesterday’s Commander in Chief Forum, sponsored by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association (IAVA.org). Hillary Clinton expressed urgency in assisting active-duty and veteran members of the military to reduce rates of sexual assault and suicide. Donald Trump said that rape in the military was due to men and women serving together in uniform.

In Ohio news, a new ballot initiative was filed with the Ohio Attorney General’s office. The initiative language states the purpose: “To prohibit abortion of all unborn human beings, without exception, and classifying it as aggravated murder in the State of Ohio.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said:

“The proposed law would punish women, plain and simple. If passed, women and doctors would be imprisoned for any abortion, even one to save a woman’s life. Also, the language would block prescription birth control, emergency contraception, IUDs, and could impact access to in-vitro fertilization.

The so-called ‘Heartbeat Bill’ was unconstitutional. Multiple anti-abortion restrictions signed by John Kasich have been ruled unconstitutional. When will anti-abortion zealots stop trying to punish women?”

The filling is the very first steps in the ballot initiative process, when the AG’s office and ballot board reviews petitions for basic legal requirements. If approved, petition solicitors can begin to collect the 300,000 valid signatures they will need to qualify for the ballot. They could complete the task in time for the 2017 election, but signatures do not expire, so this proposal could go to voters in any future year.

One theory is that, if passed, this law would give President Donald Trump a test case to overturn Roe v. Wade after appointing one or more US Supreme Court justices.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWinewas ordered to pay $45,000 to the legal team representing Planned Parenthood. DeWine accused Planned Parenthood of mishandling fetal tissue (they weren’t) and threatened to enforce a vague law (he couldn’t). The lawsuit was settled this week.

Also pending are three other cases affecting reproductive rights in Ohio.

  • In Toledo, Capital Careis challenging the constitutionality of Ohio’s transfer agreement requirement.
  • In Dayton, Women’s Med Centerand PPSWO have a case challenging the process for the state to grant variance requests (these are the way clinics could work around transfer agreements by working directly with doctors instead of hospitals).
  • In Cleveland, Pretermis challenging John Kasich’s 2011 state budget for violating the requirement that all bills be single-subject.
