On July 30, 2026 Wizards of the Coast announced the return of the Dark Sun setting. If you are not familiar with this setting, think of it as Mad Max meets Dungeons and Dragons, but without the guns and cars. This is an impromptu episode where I discuss my thoughts on the return of this setting.
In this episode we will take a look at some of the aspects of Dungeons & Dragons that, over the last few years, have been labeled as problematic.
We will be taking a look at topics like racism, sexism, politics, and the origin of orcs. This was not a fun episode to write. I tried to understand the views of both sides. Spoiler alert: I think both sides have issues, but they are not the same.
This is a long episode, and I still don't think I covered everything I could have or should have touched upon.
More importantly, there is the question of what we should do about aspects of D&D that are considered problematic. There is not an answer that will satisfy everyone, but I will do my best to discuss what we should do.

As the phenomenon known as the Backrooms started to grow in popularity there was much speculation as to where the original photo was taken. Many fans of the Backrooms believed the photo was of a vacant office space or suspected it was a digital creation. Few fans released the location would eventually be found.
In May of 2024 it was revealed that the famous photo was taken at a location that is now a hobby store. In this episode Al interviews the current owner of the building. We talk about the history of the location as well as how the revelation that this was the location of the Backrooms photo has impacted the business.

Stories about missing cities have been around for a while. Many of us are familiar with names like Sodom and Gomorrah, Atlantis, Pompeii, and Roanoke. Those places disappeared long ago. Surely there are no modern tales of cities mysteriously gone missing?
That is what I thought until my wife showed me a post from a Facebook group she is on about a town in my home state called Doveland. Supposedly, this town disappeared sometime in the early 1990s. These words appeared at the beginning of a paragraph on the 4Chan website back in May of 2019 describing a picture of an empty office space. Since that day The Backrooms have become a popular subject among fans of internet horror.
However, the development of the Backrooms has not been the work of a single person. Wiki users have submitted hundreds of levels, programmers have created video games based on the Backrooms, YouTube creators have made videos about this place, and (shameless self promotion) the host of this podcast and a friend of his wrote a table top role playing game called Caught in the Backrooms.

Back in 1981 rock band KISS released an ambitious album called Music from the Elder. It was intended to serve as the soundtrack for a movie. According to Gene Simmons several actors had already been cast and a script was in the works. All that came to a screeching halt after the album was released. Music from the Elder was panned by many fans and critics alike. Later reviewers have been kinder to Music from the Elder, but it is still considered one of KISS' least successful albums.
In this episode Al discusses the original script for the movie, Seb Hunter's attempt to make an adaptation in 2012, and his ideas for how he would write a movie that would more closely follow the music on the album. A lot of the information for this episode comes from Odyssey: The definitive examination of "Music From The Elder," KISS' cult-classic concept album by Tim McPhate and Julian Gill. Its an interesting book, and if you are a fan of this album I highly recommend it.

At the time of this recording Final Fantasy Record Keeper offers more than 200 playable characters. Not all of them were created equally. Some characters from this game have limited skills or a small selection of weapons and armor. These handicaps can limit their effectiveness. In some cases even having a couple of soul breaks for the character won't do them much good! Al and son discuss who they think are the least useful characters in the game. Many people who grew up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s remember watching media featuring karate masters, ninjas, and kung fu monks jump kicking through the air. We were memorized by the almost supernatural abilities these martial artists seemed to possess, and no doubt watching these movies and TV shows inspired more than one child to beg his parents to sign him up for karate classes. But things changed in the 90s as mixed martial arts and Brazilian jujitsu exploded onto the scene. All of a sudden the aforementioned ninja, karate masters, and kung fu monks lost their aura of mystique. Go to any martial arts forum or look through YouTube videos and you will probably find people claiming that if you aren't studying BJJ, boxing, or Muay Thai you are wasting your time. But is this really the case? Are traditional martial arts like karate, kung fu, and tae kwon do still worthwhile in a world where the competitive fighting scene is dominated by boxers and grapplers? That is the topic Al and Marcus will tackle today.

The question of evil and where it comes from is one that humanity has long sought an answer to. All religions and cultures have had their own way to approach this topic, and many faiths point the finger at an entity that embodies all that is foul and corrupt. For this year's Halloween special Al reads a research paper he wrote during his final year in college called The Character and Development of Satan. The purpose of this independent study project was to examine how the entity called Satan changed and developed from the Old Testament, through the inter-Testament period, and into the New Testament.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper is a mobile game that brings together characters, equipment, and events from many of the titles in this long running video game series. This leads to a couple of interesting questions: what if all the Final Fantasy games did in fact take place on the same world and in the same continuity? What chronological order would make the most sense? Al and son attempt to answer these questions as we discuss how we think the Final Fantasy games presented in Record Keeper could take place on the same world (with Mystic Quest thrown in just because Al really likes that game and hopes it will be introduced to Record Keeper someday).

Good Old Games (www.gog.com) is now offering classic Dungeons and Dragons games! These games, called the Gold Box Series, were the result of a partnership between TSR and SSI.
